Harbor Country Gem! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well-maintained park setting. Perfect for other friends/family not into disc golf(not possible...right?) ;)
Clearly marked hole-layout at each tee. Also, each hole appears to be sponsored by local businesses.
Front-nine wooded/technical and very scenic. Little arrows on baskets point towards next tee!

Cons:

Front-nine recently redone. Not a bad thing by itself, however the map I printed from the park's website was out-dated and completely off.
Hole #9 was a swamp and according to previous reviews this is a common situation.

Other Thoughts:

My family and I visit Harbor Country every summer and since I recently started disc golfing I brought along a couple discs in case the weather wasn't 'beach weather' every day(it wasn't) :(. Anyways, this course is in a township park not far from the 'touristy' towns along the Lake Michigan shores. This is my first review, but I have been playing other courses near my hometown for a little over a year. I still don't have the power to throw super-far, but the front-nine at Sand Ridge is more technical and requires precision more than power(it had a couple of the shortest holes I've ever played-not complaining!).

It had been raining in the past couple days so the bugs were to be expected in the woods(I brought bug spray), but hole #9 was laughably unplayable! The park needs to bring in some dirt to add elevation or just redesign that hole if possible. Unfortunately, I could only play the front-nine(I attempted #9, but later regretted doing so) due to patient family members ready to do more 'touristy' things. The signage was top-notch at each tee box and thanks to the arrows on the baskets I was able to navigate the course even with an out-dated map. Obviously, a lot of work went into the reconstruction of the wooded holes and it shows with a short/technical challenge appreciated for a novice like myself but it could be appreciated by even a veteran player. 3 stars for the front-nine. I will update the review to include the back when I visit again.

Meh 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Vastly improved compared to previous layout. I liked the turf pads, maybe even better than cement. Decent combination of wooded and open holes.

Cons:

Some of the wooded holes (3, 4, 6, 9) are poke and hope where luck is the key factor getting close. Unnecessary mando on hole 10, could have simply moved 17 basket (and tee if want same length hole). The throw over the pond is virtually no challenge and an ineffective use of said pond.

Other Thoughts:

Again, vast improvement over previous layouts. However, could have been so much better with some basic changes. Wouldn't go out of my way to play it, but it's playable if you're in the area.

Where's That Confounded Bridgman? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 11, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Sand Ridge DGC is the redesigned course located at Lake Township Park in Bridgman, MI. A pleasant variety of hole types comprise the new layout: long, open, grassy park-style; short, tight, technical heavily-wooded; and moderately-wooded. There is even a hole throwing over the little pond that (mostly) wasn't utilized in the old design. Township Park is "mixed use" but the new course layout largely avoids areas of the park where conflicts could occur.
- Signage is descriptive and sufficient. Next tee arrows on baskets help direct traffic. The flow is pretty self explanatory, with only a few places where things might get confusing (e.g., finding the tee on the other side of the pond or the long walk from #17's basket to #18's tee).
- Tee pads are long, wide, and level turf. I can't recall ever playing on such nicely installed turf. This may be one of the few instances where I found a non-concrete tee to be superior.
- The old course was restricted to the grassy areas and one small wooded section of the park, while the new layout is able to take advantage of a heavily-wooded property that used to be private and off-limits behind a chainlink fence. The fence is gone and now #'s 2-9 play through this area, greatly increasing the variety and fun.
- Elevation comes into play quite a bit, due to the clever pin placements, especially on the wooded holes and, to a lesser degree, the pond hole and #18. Restraint is the name of the game on several of the shorter holes where going long leaves a really tough look at the basket, due to drop offs, ridges, etc. Nothing epic in terms of elevation, but what's there is well utilized.
- There's a short water carry over the pond (#11), with a basket atop a small rise, with OB road behind.

Cons:

- As with any multi-use park, there's the chance that different user activities may overlap. #18's basket remains pretty close to some benches, but nothing egregious. Most of the conflicts that were a hallmark of the old layout have been painstakeningly corrected, so I can't nitpick too much in this area.
- A few of the wooded holes may end up being too short once the course sees more play (and the currently tight fairways open up from increased foot traffic). While they're technically fun now, I worry that they might become too easy in the future.
- #5 has an "island" green marked with flags, which feels a bit contrived.

Other Thoughts:

- All told, this course design is a HUGE improvement, much welcomed, and those responsible should be commended. The old layout was hands down the worst disc golf course I had ever played. It was dangerous, horrifically designed, frustrating, ugly, and no fun. At first, I felt like the old layout should have been preserved for eternity as a perfect example of all the bad aspects of course design. But now, I'm stoked to see the myriad problems rectified, restoring my faith in disc golf design, and bringing a big fun factor to the park's course. Bridgman is close to my hometown, but the old course was sooo bad, I hadn't played there since 2011-ish despite regularly being in Bridgman. That won't be an issue with Sand Ridge.

Growing into a Great Course drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 17, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Starts and Finishes in a pretty aesthetically pleasing Hardwood Grove, with enough elevation to also effect your shot selection
18 is a Gem of a Finisher :)

Holes 2 thru 9 take you into the Woods and the Sandy Ridge!
Short, tight, and technical golf here
6 and 7 have real rollaway risk/danger

10 11 12 and 13 play Parkstyle:
10 lets you open up and Rip a Driver
11 plays over a Retention Pond to a Basket uphill.
12 also plays Uphill, with Cedars in the Fairway, making you shape a Shot
13 is another Ripper, with the Basket in a Woodline

14 15 16 and 17 play in and or around a Wooded Lot in the middle of the Park
14 and 15 are nice big RHBH Hyzerz
16 is a sweet all Wooded hole
17 throws from the Woods to a Basket out in the Park

*We Safari'd 10s Tee to 1s Basket, then played 18

Cons:

The Bog behind the Ridge is Mosquito Hello

The Ridge Rough is a Thorny work in progress

9s Fairway retains water

Other Thoughts:

I'm indifferent to Tees. Teepads currently vary from Concrete, Turf, and Natural at Sand Ridge

We played after a night of rain, and only one spot on the course had standing water... #9s fairway

Lake Township Sand Ridge DGC - A work in progress. But it can be played! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 7, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- This new layout avoids all the safety hazards of the old layout.
- Variety here is refreshing. From left to right and visa versa. We even have a water hazard now!
- The flow is natural and intuitive.
- Navigation for the most part is easy. The permanent signage is now in place and clearly indicates where to find the next tee. There are temporary "thataway arrows" on the bottom of each basket. I know cause I made them and installed them.
- Some of the holes offer challenges not seen anywhere else in the area and are a bit punishing - borderline punitive. #3 and #4 are good examples of this. Those two have a tight fairway with a tight turn to the basket. Anything long or short of the turn is going to be impossible to get to the basket.
- #8 is probably the toughest sub-150' hole I have ever seen. The elevated basket is a tempting ace run but throws short or long are heavily penalized.
- Turf tees. What a relief from concrete tees. Easier on the knees and they don't tear up your shoes. They are slightly less grippy than rough concrete but are so much more pleasant to tee off of IMHO.

Cons:

- No benches - yet
- The walks between some of the holes are pretty long. 14 to 15 isn't terrible but 17 to 18 is really long. Unfortunately, with the way the park is laid out there's really no practical way to get around this issue.
- #9 fairway is prone to flooding during heavy rains. However, this is going to be fixed this winter (2017) or next spring.

Other Thoughts:

Full disclosure here folks...I have been doing a lot of work on this course so I am doing my best to not sound like a course homer here. So my score is intended to be rather neutral and I am trying to be honest with the pros and cons. Please take this review with a grain of salt. Also, I will be constantly updating this review to detail changes and improvements that occur here.

Just a word of caution here. Like a lot of Michigan courses there is plenty of poison ivy and bugs - especially ticks. Nothing can be done about it other than educating yourself on both items especially after the horrendous amount of precipitation we've had this year (2018). Please be careful.

This course is quite rough and raw in the wooded areas. There is still quite a bit of work that needs to be done to really get it to that finished state. Tee pads will be installed along with all sorts of other amenities. PLEASE IGNORE MY SCORE. I feel that I am in a position where it would be difficult for me to be completely unbiased because of all the time I've spent here working on it. Get out here and play it yourself and come up with your own conclusions and formulate your own score. Thanks for reading!
