Boggy Recreational Level Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Schlather Park is a fairly large park with walking paths which run throughout the park. A large part of this park is called a wet/dry detention area. I call it a wetland or a bog. All I know is that South Texas is in the middle of a very long drought and this park still had lots of areas with standing water as well as much other area which was mushy and wet. However, part of the course is played on nice dry grassy areas too.
The course has nice concrete tee pads. The tee signs are one of my least favorite kinds, the old school fiberglass ones. I find them to be magnets to any teen vandals with a rock who want to destroy something or taggers with a paint can. These, however, have held up pretty well thus far. The baskets are the DGA models with the red numbers on top. I'm sorry, I don't see Schlather as being a good course to bring beginners too. The distances are recreational length all the way. There are only two holes under 250 ft. and one of those is a semi-scary, lose your disc throw over a pond. The course is not real long but those 325-350 ft. holes all are pretty tight or as in the case of # 6, the boggy pond lurks just on the right. # 10 has houses on the right and the bog on the left. I'm not saying these are advanced level challenging holes, just that are they aren't where I'm taking any beginner. I'll be taking my beginner types to Helotes Family DGC, a place where they can enjoy their round without losing any discs and a place where they actually get lucky and birdie a hole.
Now that I'm off my beginner bandwagon, I did enjoy # 7, the short throw over the pond. The basket is still slightly guarded by some trees and I did hit one and my disc did fall and land approx 3 inches from the nasty looking water. I'm not sponsored by anyone and I've had that trusty Leopard for many years now so I'd be crushed if I lost it.
# 11 was kind of a cool tunnel shot having to keep it low beneath the branches.

Cons:

If the course was this wet in the middle of a drought, what would it be like after any rainfall.
Decent variety of holes but no real 'Wow" factor for me.
Chance of discs hitting the water or going over neighbors fence is likely.
HBB in high rating on this course.
Rattlesnakes! How about water mocassins?
Crazy one road only way of getting here.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoyable but not awe-inspiring recreational course. Quite a few ho-hum holes. Because there are so many other nice choices ( Universal City Park-McLain-Live Oak) within 10 miles from here, I doubt if I would make the effort to play here very often. I'd leave it all the players bringing their kids and girlfriends.
