I've Aced EVERY tree... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Great mix of shots: fairways, dog legs, long, and short.
* Interesting mixed wooded terrain. This includes old housing foundations, a walking path on the outskirts and large commercial planes flying appearing to fly about 10 feet over your head!
* Lots of benches.
* The woods keep the wind down to a minimum.

Cons:

* Navigation can be difficult; really difficult for first timers. I took a picture of the Map Board with my cell phone so I could refer back to it.
* Heavily wooded. If you're an Am3 or lower, consider this place a trick shot course and chase your discs to see where they land.
* High Probability of losing a disc. Watch them close, and employ a spotter!
* No bathroom facilities, unless you count the bushes as such... PLEASE pack it out if number 2 calls...
* Animal Control heavily patrols the area. I mean, they get sneaky, roving around through the woods in their trucks and taking video! Keep that pup licensed, vaccinated, and on a leash or suffer the ticket!
* I've been told the underbrush gets really dense during the summer, and to reserve this as a winter course.

Other Thoughts:

A couple of Pro/Am tournaments have been held here now. It's a privately maintained course directly under the flight landing path of SeaTac Int'l Airport. Play here with people that are better than you and you'll learn so much. Bring a pair of gloves in case you have to go into the brambles for your disc!

Challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 11, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Awesome layout, and very challenging. It is challenging because you really have to keep it in the fairway, if you don't then you will be punished! Awesome variety of holes, just a top notch course.
If you play this course regularly you will improve your game, and you can't say that about a lot of courses.
The course is set on what used to me a subdivision check out the old foundations, ect.

Cons:

Vandalism is somewhat of a problem. Some holes might be hard to navigate to and from, but there is signage on most holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course really is a par 59 or 60 course, opinions are a many.
Try this course out for a real challenge.
I would rate this course a 4.25

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 20, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pro's:

Test of the mental game - I absolutely love the way this course has two distinctly different sides, each with its own personality. The front side tests your ability to "go for it" and rack up some birdies while the back side tests patience and damage control.

The front 10 are all par 3s which vary in difficulty from hole 1 which is a 300' relatively open hyzer to hole 4 which is a long and somewhat tight, low ceiling & winding fairway (this hole probably averages about 4 strokes).

The front side is the optimistic side - your drives can be big and bold. Little trouble is found on most of the birdie holes (1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10), but all of these require very skilled shots to get 2's and bogeys are easily be found on any of the front 10 holes with a poor drive or upshot.

Heading into the back side, you hopefully have tallied up enough birdies to counter the bogeys which are likely on their way. Upon reaching hole 11, the course demeanor immediately changes. If the front side were described as "be here FOR birdie", the back side would be "be here OR bogey".

Hole 11 is a high bombing right to left shot that plays easier for a big lefty/sidearm. However, if you don't have a big arm, you will be navigating many short pines to find good placement for par. If you haven't reached the obvious landing zone, you'll be navigating a lot of trees and a fast green that slopes away from you on the upshot.

Similarly hole 12, the first par 4 of the course, requires a medium range hyzer through woods to a landing zone which sets up for a low-ceiling midrange or putter shot to an enclosed green. The drive and approach by themselves should be quite easy in isolation, but combining them both on this hole makes it a challenge to get a 3.

From hole 14 onwards, you have almost 0 chance of an eagle 2 and also little chance of running all five holes without one or several 4's or 5's. Each of these holes requires both a well-placed drive and a great upshot for 3. These holes can slaughter a great round. Going in you can be 5 or 6 under par and still come out at or above par with a few bad shots.

Tees/Baskets - The baskets are a mix of Mach's and homemades which are all high quality and catch well. The concrete tee pads likewise are very high quality.

Luck - I put this in the pro's section because there are a few holes where luck is required; however, these are holes where you can create your own luck in the long-run. Hole 14 is probably the most complained about hole on the course - with some legitimate reason. You drive from an elevated tee across a mostly open field for about 280 feet and then enter tight woods with little visible fairway. However, it should be noted that there are distinct pockets and landing areas that make getting a 3 more likely. Yes, you will get bad kicks on good drives, but in the long run the more often you can find the high percentage areas, the better your average score will be.

Navigation - It is fairly easy to find your way around this course and there are usually tee signs to direct you to the next hole. Even if these are removed from time to time, a first-timer should be able to find their way around.

Variety - To score well, you'll likely be throwing a large variety of shots both off the tee and to save pars. There are several great sidearm or backhand favoring holes, several which require high booming shots, several low-ceiling, and several which are well suited to a controlled or distance roller.

Maintenance - This can be a pro or a con depending on when you visit. So far this year, every time that I have played this course, it has looked great. I know the volunteers down south are doing A LOT of mowing, weed whacking, and general maintenance to keep this place in check. From what I hear, in past years the course is barely playable in the summer because the fairway grass is so tall.

Jet wash - Because you are so close to the airport, on some days you'll see/hear/feel the effects of plane jet wash which is pretty cool. You do learn to hold up on shots for a few minutes after a really close plane because the ensuing mini-tornado can wreak havoc on your shot!

Cons:

Vandalism/Trash - This park is not in the best of areas and because parts of it are quite secluded (like #14's teeing area) you'll find a lot of vandalism and trash from bored kids. In addition, lately there is a tree hacker who is going to town trying to make the course fit his game. The course is pretty resilient but the continued chopping is starting to ruin some of the fairways L

Skill level - My opinion is that this course plays great for the silver and lower gold rated players, but probably not to the elite professionals. Most of the par 4's probably seem quite simple and somewhat boring to the elite player but still mostly out of range for realistic eagle attempts. All levels will certainly be challenged on some of the holes out here but the elite pro's will probably find holes like #12 #15, or #16 somewhat boring while players below 1000 will find them challenging and fun. This course will also likely frustrate players who have not yet developed a consistent, controllable shot. There is a lot of rough out here and it would not be fun to walk through it for an entire round.

My one hole design beef - two really tiny issues on hole 18. First of all, there is a paved path which runs along the left side of the fairway for the approach shot. Currently, across the path is played as IN bounds for reasons which I cannot understand. It may help to lay out the shot: On your drive, the righty must throw a low ceiling hyzer or skip shot which hooks hard left around a patch of thorns to a clearly defined placement area. The second shot is usually a high booming turnover which stalls and drops over the top of the basket. Poor approach shots or shots attempted from outside of the landing area frequently lose turnover and fade left across said path. I think this deserves the extra punishment of an OB stroke so players will evaluate their ability to throw this shot safely from their current position. It will set up a risk/reward scenario in which poor placement on the drive necessitates safe play for 4 rather than a no-risk pump over the trees. Currently, good drive placement is being somewhat compromised by the lack of adequate punishers later on in the hole (reward/no reward). In addition, the path is clearly defined (no question about OB or not OB) and is used by pedestrians which poses a safety hazard as this approach is a blind shot.

My second tiny design beef is the little OB pond (about 4 feet by 2 feet) which is directly in front of the basket on 18. I think it is a fun and quirky little OB area but tends only to punish relatively good shots that are on target. I'd prefer a bunc'r type ruling for this rather than an extra stroke punishment on a good throw that gets unlucky. That's it! The rest of this course is pure gold IMO.

Other Thoughts:

If I were to recommend one course to play near Seattle on a trip through the area, I'd recommend Seatac. It is very well laid out, the most challenging, and easiest to find your way around on.

Caught in the Jetwash 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 27, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is one of the longest and most challenging courses in the state of Washington. The course par could realistically be set at a 60-62, as many of the holes play like par 4's. It's good to keep in mind that you will need both length and accuracy to score well, so beware that you cannot just crush every shot, as it can be gnarly if you are caught in the rough, and 5's will become common. The fairways are shaped primarily by woods and shrubs along the edges with grassy fairways, and a just enough of shrubs and trees in the fairways to force creative shot-making. This length plays more like ball golf in that it often requires 2-3 accurate shots to make it to the green for your putt. The course is mostly flat (unfortunately), but it makes up for it in length and difficulty level.

This spring they placed little green "next tee" arrows on the ground to help guide the way - suggest printing a map just to be safe!

Cons:

The jets overhead can be distracting, but once you accept their presence, it is fine.

Vandalism has destroyed many of the tee signs and litter can be a problem, but local volunteers have been placing buckets at the tees and been haulin' trash away - thanks!

Probably best not to play alone, as there was a recent incident where a disc golfer was robbed of his bag by hoodlums.

Not for beginners or people who don't like to walk far - it's physical, and some of the rough is disc-eatin'.

Other Thoughts:

There needs to be an update of the pars here, so that many won't leave this place cursing at themselves and the course. Of course, revamping the tee signs would be a good accompaniment as well.

I have upgraded my score by one full point, as when the course is in it's prime (like the Duel Nature tournament I played this weekend), it is really a marvel. They have improved the "next tee" signs and the fairways and rough are so much kinder than they used to be.

Pros:

-Very, very challenging.
-Good variety of shots.
-Nice course map with detail.
-Green signs pointing to the next tee.
-Baskets and tees are in good shape.

Cons:

-The grass is too tall! Mow the fricken grass!
-Trash, broken glass, etc all over the place.
-Bad neighboorhood, homeless and other sketchy characters everywhere.
-Very flat, little elevation change.
-No parking here, there was only 4-5 spots and they were full when I came.

I think my main con was the grass. There was no fairway and tons of time was wasted searching for even good throws. It made the round miserable.

Other Thoughts:

I loved Kingwood park and this one fell short of other reviews. If you are a pro looking for a challenge come here but if you are not don't come here.

Pros:

An excellent amount of challenge for even the well advanced or pro players with a good amount of distance throws and technical holes that will challenge your long and short game. Good amount of dog legs both left and right. Huge park that seems like it was intended for disc golf and there is very little traffic other than your fellow golfers.

Cons:

The park is in a crummy neighbor hood and if you play here you will see the homeless camping out in this park at times, one time I was playing it and there were four or five homeless men drinking and sitting by a fire they had made five feet next to a basket! Vandalism is everywhere. The grass gets very long in the summer time and they don't maintain the park very well. The first time out it could be hard to find all of the holes. This place is right next door to the airport so the planes are very loud which can screw with your concentration at times especially on putts.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great park to test your game at, even great players can get frustrated here and there are many par threes that could easily be par fours especially for the novice so don't bring newbies here! If they were to maintain the park and kick out the bad elements this has the potential to be a 4.5 or higher. This course is very close to Lakewood DGC in Seattle and I usually make the drive and play both in the same day.

Great Challenge 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This course is beautiful with a lot of tree cover, which is great for the privacy of disc golf. This course is narrow and the shots are tough the challenge is enjoyable, but can be frustrating if you aren't on your A game.

Cons:

Jets fly over your head, but it is no big deal. If you are going for your first time try and link with someone who knows where to go.

Other Thoughts:

Par is as good as birdie on most of these holes and sometimes it makes me feel like a worse disc golfer then I am. But it is certainly the best course I've played and I imagine that even the best pros might struggle to shoot under par here.

-Very green w/nice foliage. I really like asthetically pleasing courses.

Pros:

-Good Teepads
-Kiosk at hole 1 with map
-Baskets in good shape
-Great mix of hole lengths from under 250 to over 500.
-Many of the holes had benches.
-Very fair Lefty vs. Righty with big dog-legs in both directions.
-Decent course flow (if you've got a map)
-True par 4s (although they are all stated as 3, argh)
-Lot's of LONG tunnel shots, often times finishing with dog-legs.
-I don't know what else to say, the course forces you to decide where you are wanting to land for your next shot, not for your upshot or your putt, but often times for your next drive. That's golf!

Cons:

-Vandalism rampant
-Tee signs are mostly vandalized or missing
-Without a guide or map, you'd be SOL.
-I think it's too challenging for the average player to enjoy.
-Didn't see any facilities for water/restroom
-Fair amount of trash strewn about.
-Course is listed as a par 54, which is ridiculous, probably closer to a par 59.

Other Thoughts:

Seatac is an amazing Pro course. It's a playground of difficult shot after difficult shot. The back nine has probably 4-5 par fours on it, many of which dog-leg to the left or to the right. Often you can't see the basket from the teepad, and I don't see this as being a bad thing at all. I had heard that Seatac was the most challenging course in WA and I haven't found any evidence otherwise. It was amazingly fun. I thoroughly enjoyed my round, and I stopped keeping score about halfway through because I was shooting so poorly.

If you plan on heading to Seatac for the first time, MAKE SURE YOU PRINT OFF A MAP. Read the other reviews below and see why, there are some teepads that are tricky to find, and some teepads face towards baskets that aren't the basket you're actually shooting at. It's a little confusing. So get a map, or better yet, a guide, and get ready for more double bogeys than you've ever had.

If the course was taken care of better, I would rate Seatac 4.5 stars. This is the best course I've played in Washington state, and I can't wait to go back.

like a MAZE 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2007 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is so long and so by itself that its as if you are in a maze that you must disc golf your way out of. On number six I drove too far off the fairway and I remember foolishly thinking that I was perhaps in another fairway and I should be careful. I wasn't, there is just no way. A designer could easily fit 72 holes on the amount of space that is dedicated to this park. A typical Seatac hole is well signed with a good tee pad. The typical hole has long fairways with a few trouble spots to avoid, maybe a big tree just off center or a group of bushes or vines. Long and straight is usually awarded off tee. Then it has a thinking mans approach shot, there is so many very mature trees and bushes that I mean this for any drive too. A drive that is left, right, or center of most fairways will have different sometimes very different approach looks. Finally the basket is guarded somehow by being in a unique basket area. Then you make an honest walk to the next tee to a completely different area in the maze. In short, I loved it.

Its my hunch that this place was once a neighborhood before the airport was installed. With so much mature, and weirdly open vegetation its only a few more hills and ponds away from being perfect. The course felt so secluded to me that I got the feeling that any random bush on any random fairway would be good enough for nature, or for lovers. I did see a few joggers and there was a few groups that played through, but to me they just felt like other people trapped in the maze.

Cons:

There was a moment at the end of the round where we all had a laugh at how big our scores were. A three here means that your arm is a cannon and or you are a lucky golfer. The variety on this course is long and longER. There were a couple of hilarious moments in which our foursome was lost and none of us seemed able to comprehend the map. It was like Spinal Tap aimlessly trying to take the stage. Other times because of the wildness of the vegetation it was all hands on deck to look for a disc that was only a few feet off course.

Then there are the planes. The first six holes I felt like I could never get used to the noise, that I was going to suffer hearing damage even though I used to play drums. The next six holes were spent having to suffer through awkward pauses as a plane powered through the air. The last six holes were like a seamless dance between ringing chains and pauses for planes, honestly its strange how fast you get used to it.

Other Thoughts:

Its my opinion that there is more shot variety at nearby Lakewood and that a beginner might get tired and frustrated here. After spending this much time thinking about my time here, I ache to play this course again. Right before I teed off number one, I got a recorded message telling me my flight was cancelled. It was cool being able to see all the Horizon Air flights and be able to signal to them how I felt about it. Its funny, when I fly into Seattle I always end up telling my new flight buddies about how I'm in town to play disc golf and I get to show off this course to them just before (and I mean just before) touching down.

Pros:

A great layout. Extremely challenging with many blind throws from the tee. The concrete tees were nice and in good condition.

Cons:

This is one of the worst maintained courses I have played. The holes are ill marked. Signs with the shot layout are nearly nonexistent. Signage to the next tee is nearly nonexistent and inaccurate when present, especially 10. The thorn bushes will eat you alive if a disc goes in. Garbage was strewn everywhere. Finding 10 and 15 was nearly impossible.

Other Thoughts:

If you base your opinion of how good a course is simply by how tough it is than this course is a 4.

However, when you you look at all of the things that can make or break a course Seatac gets a lousy score. I have played some courses that are tougher than Seatac that are a joy to play (Tyler, Downriver, and Campgaw for instance are all tougher). But things like good signage, proper upkeep of the park, litter, a good local club to help the upkeep (Downriver and Newport News have great clubs I have come into contact with), parking, bathrooms, etc. Seatac does not hold up here at all. It could, with some work, be a favorite in The Northwest. As I continue to travel and play other courses around the country my opinion of this course only gets stronger. So while it is definitely worth playing it is a long way from being even average at this point. Just to many things need to be fixed.

My guess is the vandalism that was evident on what signage was there is why they do not have new signs. It would have been better with someone to show me around and explain where the baskets were in relation to the tee.The map that is on here is helpful.

- Beautiful park with paths, meadows, and a variety of trees and flora

Nice course...loud airplanes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 30, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

course has 18 holes with good length. Plenty of trees, yet it is fair because there is space between the trees. The course has been cleared of a lot of brush, blackberries and probably even a few trees. I went two weeks after a tournament and the course was in great shape. There are actually defined grass fairways now where as not long ago much of this was scrubby underbrush and thorn bushes. Definitely much improved course conditions from earlier reviews. The tee signs are good with distance, dogleg info and next tee info on each sign (unfortunately many of the tee sign are vandalized). Benches and trash buckets throughout the course.

Cons:

The planes are LOUD!!! It is not the courses fault; however, this is a major distraction. As said above many of the informative tee signs are vandalized and useless. Baskets #4 and #9 are too close. Thirty foot putting circles were still visible spray painted on the ground from the recent tournament. The circles overlapped by a good ten feet on these two baskets. Why? There was plenty of room for #9 basket to be moved somewhere else. An approach shot on #9 could easily nail someone trying to put on #4. No real elevation change.

Other Thoughts:

Overall SEATAC is a nice piece of land and the layout is great (except for the placement of #9 basket so close to #4 basket). This is more of a professional layout in that the course is long and with many tree obstacles. A few baskets are placed right behind trees. The course looks like it has been opened up (former underbrush must have been pretty bad). A really nice course is emerging here. Bring a map if you want to get around easy.

That being said...Oh my, are those planes loud. SEATAC is a big-time airport with massive planes that fly right over the course. The planes are very close to the ground. Depending on the flight schedule 6 planes may take off in a 10 minute period then maybe you can go 10 minutes without any planes taking off. The noise pollution is so bad I will bring ear plugs if I am playing by myself early in the morning when not many other golfers are around.

The course itself is becoming really nice. You will have to judge for yourself what you think of the airplanes.

Pros:

Long and tight challenging fair-ways (they don't unnecessarily kick you deep into the woods like some courses). Well maintained, clearly dedicated work-bushes and trees are cut back as they should be instead of being allowed to grow in and ruin or block a hole like at many courses. Cement tees, course map at 1st hole. Beautiful land with many varieties of trees and colors.

Cons:

Very hard to find #10's tee, no signs toward it, hidden in woods. Back 9 often requires scouting ahead to figure out the hole. Loud jets taking off above you every few minutes make it hard to focus if playing for $.

Other Thoughts:

Bring a map, a local, or take a picture of/copy down the map and save yourself a hassle. It is navigable though-just takes some effort.

Most Difficult Course in Washington! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

This course is the toughest course I have ever played by far. The length of the holes makes for difficult approaches or second drives on 3/4 of all the holes. For such a long layout, it has narrow fairways as well which weren't expected. I heard you have to have a big arm here but I wasn't expecting to have to have a big arm with perfect accuracy as well. Overall its a great course and is very challenging. This place will make you a better golfer or will dislocate your shoulder in the process.

Cons:

Narrow and Long. The fairways were nice and mowed when I was there but other reviews talked about long grass which I could tell would be a problem if you played here at the wrong time. The course is also difficult to navigate and there has been a lot of vandalism to the signs at the tee pads (punk kids).

Other Thoughts:

Amazing course and by far the most challenging in Washington. Players who make this their home course can play anywhere. Don't expect a score below +10 until you've played it a few times. Also be on the lookout for the Jet Washes coming off the airplanes about 15-20 seconds after the planes pass by. You literally can see and hear the jet wash go by and it looks like a cloudy ribbon streaking through the sky. It's a trip.

Toughest in WA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Give it a high rating because I believe and have asked around that this is WA's toughest course. Flat. Long holes, has a wild feel to it. Have only played twice, and love the openess of it. Meadow. Plenty of trees to go around.

Cons:

This course wears you out. Esp if you lose your disc or spend alot of time looking for it. Come prepared to spot very very carefully when you drive your disc.

The airplanes flying overhead do affect the air quality of the place. Not for the chemically senstitive.

Other Thoughts:

On my first 9 holes, I only got three par. 4s and 5s would be the norm for this course.

Come prepared to "Air" it out and pray.

Under the Planes 2+ years drive by

Other Thoughts:

As other reviewers have stated - this is a challenging course... but let me add my 2 cents from a rec player who attempts tounament play now and then. You won't get any better playing easy courses. There - its been said. My average drive is in the mid 200's... and I can par most holes... except a few on the back 9. But I have mad par at least once on every hole... so it is possible even for a short thrower like me!

Potential Versus Actuality? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2006 Played the course:never

Pros:

The course sits on a rather nice piece of land. There are many trees and lots of underbrush. The holes are long and challenging. The fairways are narrow and challenging. The roughs are dark and foreboding. If you earn a birdie here, you should be proud, they aren't easy to come by. The course is signed well enough and the tee pads are all good (cement.) The course is seldom crowded, either with players or park users.

Cons:

The course gets completely overgrown during the summer months. This results in much time spent looking for lost discs in two foot high grass. A little maintenance would go along way towards improving this course. The roughs are ugly. This is definitely not a course you would play by yourself.

Other Thoughts:

The course is generally geared towards the more advanced player. It's a mostly frustrating experience for us recreational players. Perhaps that why the course is seldom crowded or under- utilized as a previous reviewer reported. If 75% of the players find it to be an overwhelmingly, frustrating experience, that leaves the course to the other 25% to love and cherish as their own. The rest of us will drive 2.3 miles up the street and play Lakewood King County Park, which is always busy.
