Pros:

Thanks to a complete redesign that occurred around Thanksgiving 2010, this is now a very challenging, fun par 61 course.

The course flows very well and there are minimal walks between holes. Maps are usually available in the mailbox attached to the bulletin board by hole 1. There are 2 sets of pads, the long pads are concrete and the short pads are rubber mats. Nice looking tee signs are on every hole that list the distance from both pads and have a hole diagram. Water is available on the course three places. On the front (street) side of the red barn shelter between the two doors, by the shelter near hole 13 and by hole 16 next to the restroom (white building), but it is turned off in the winter. The tee pads are all brand new, 10ft long and in great condition. There are black mats under most of the baskets to keep grass from growing up next to them and deter the mowers for hitting them.

The land was used to its fullest extent so you'll find elevation changes on many of the holes and a number of tough putting greens. The course has a good balance of long bombs, short technical shots, placement shots, hyzers and anhyzers. Even though some of the holes are short, you aren't going to find any gimmies here.



Here's how the course breaks down from a RHBH perspective:

Hole 1 - A nice short opening hole with a challenging drop away putting green.

Hole 2 - This is the first of many par 4's. Your first drive is up a big hill with some trees shortly off the tee to avoid. The more your shot hyzers out, the more difficult your next shot will be. Once at the top of the hill the fairway gets narrower and the basket is on a downhill slops in a tree lined tunnel.

Hole 3 - A short and straight downhill tunnel shot that opens up at the basket. The drainage area on the left by the basket is OB so don't hyzer out too much.

Hole 4 - This par 4 starts out with a big, slightly uphill, turnover shot. Placement is important, if your disc hyzers out it can make the next shot more difficult or trap you behind a clump of trees. The next shot is a big hyzer around the clump of trees, but there is a small turnover alley with OB on the left if your initial drive is too far left.

Hole 5 - This hole is wide open and flat until you get to the basket. It's perched on top of a hill with that drops off behind the basket. The hill is very narrow, maybe 4 feet wide on top, so a missed putt can easily go down the hill on the other side. This is a very dangerous putting green.

Hole 6 - This is a straight tunnel shot that opens up near the basket. Hyzer off before the basket you'll find yourself down a good sized hill.

Hole 7 - This par 4 starts out with a drive up to two large clumps of pine trees. Keep your disc in the open to avoid adding on strokes. The second shot is a slightly uphill hyzer to the basket.

Hole 8 - This downhill tunnel shot has the basket straight ahead of you begging for an ace run. The problem is it's narrow enough an errant drive can easily turn into a bogie.

Hole 9 - This par 4 starts off with a big drive to a landing zone. Hyzer out before the landing zone and you could be in trouble, turn your drive over and you're OB in the road on the right. The second shot goes into a tight wooded tunnel on the left and the basket is up a small hill tucked in on the right.

Hole 10 - This short hole has a very narrow fairway that opens up slightly as you get close to the basket that's protected with a small clump of trees.

Hole 11 - This 339 foot par 4 can reward a birdie as easily as it punish you with a bogie. The narrow fairway curves ever so slightly to the right and seems to get even tighter before it opens up to a small landing zone. The next shot is a turnover that weaves through more trees before opening up to the putting green. Accuracy is definitely needed here!

Hole 12 - The basket is almost directly in front of you but it is so close to the rough on the right you need a slight hyzer to stay away from the rough on the right. If you can do that and get past the narrow gap of trees shortly off the tee you'll have a look at a birdie.

Hole 13 - This short, uphill hole has two distinct routes to the basket that go around a clump of pine trees. Don't go long, the property boundary is OB shortly behind the basket.

Hole 14 - This hole can be deceiving. It's a downhill hyzer shot into a narrow tunnel with a large pine tree on the left side. From the tee it looks like that pine is in the middle of the gap and you can go on either side of it. Go around the right side of the tree, only the luckiest shots make it on the left. The fairway turns at such an angle you almost need a spike hyzer to get it in there right.

Hole 15 - From the tee, you can see the basket between the two trees 1011 feet away! Stay away from the rough on the left. It sounds easy but there's a steady downhill off the tee allowing your shot to hyzer out more than you might think.

Hole 16 - This downhill shot has the basket protected in a line of mature pine trees. If your disc hyzers off or turns over, it's easy to find yourself in the pine trees with no shot at the basket.

Hole 17 - This uphill bomb is wide open... except for one tree right on the line you want to put your hyzer shot on. The basket is on a big, uphill slope so watch for roll aways.

Hole 18 - This challenging hole starts out with a tight downhill fairway. At the bottom it opens up into a field and turns right slightly and the basket is tucked into the trees on the left. If you try to run at the basket and hyzer out you can easily go OB over the fence.

Cons:

Rubber mats are used for the short pads but they are surprisingly grippy. I've never once slipped on them or seen anyone else slip on them after 2 years of use during leagues before we got concrete pads. Not all of them are on flat ground which does make your run up more difficult.

The rough can get pretty thick in the summer with vines and thorns. A lot of it was thinned out last fall so hopefully it won't be as bad this summer.

After the 1000 ft hole 15, you can see 18's tee before you see hole 16. Hole 16 is up the hill by the shelter to your right. The red directional sign behind hole 15's basket points you in the right direction.

The course could use a few benches and that's something we're going to work on in the spring.

Other Thoughts:

The land here lends itself to disc golf very well and this course takes advantage of it. I highly recommend going out of your way to play here!

Shooting 54-55 is 1000 rated.

Great New Design 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This course is the result of a redesign done to the, now extinct, Gary Caven Park. This new design showcases the land provided in this enormous park. At Seviren Lang you'll find a great mixture of shots. There a still quite a few ducable holes but there aren't any "gimmes". The course has just the right amount of elevation that is enough to add challenge but not enough to wear you out. There is a balanced mixture of right to left and left to right shots as well open and wooded holes and long and short shots. The former course didn't really have any memorable holes but this course seems to have one after another. The 1000+ footer is a GREAT addition. It's not often you're able to play a hole that allows you to air it out a few times on such a long hole. This course was well thought and well built.

Cons:

The rubber pads on the short tees can get slick and messy. There are a FEW places that a new visitor could get turned around between holes. The signage is (and will be) a great help to avoid this.

Other Thoughts:

This new design GREATLY improves this piece of land as far as disc golf goes. Before, the course was boring, forgetable, and not worth playing. Now the course is a true test of your abilities that will have you coming back to better your "best" there. This is the best improved redesign I've ever played.
