"High" Expectations 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ beautiful new synthetic turf tees - never played on them before but they were great (nice size and level of grip) - just wonder how they'll last through more winters
+ attractive signage
+ some cool greens and use of local rock/boulders
+ next tee arrows on baskets great for first timer
+ pleasant environment with pine trees, clean air, smell of the needles
+ some fun and challenging corridors and shot shapes

Cons:

- sometimes the lines are too tight to be fair/fun
- very little elevation (disappointing when expecting "mountain golf" in the high country
- kept getting deja vu, like I already threw the same shot through the same alley before... repetitive
- the walk-backs to next tee were often annoying and seemingly unnecessary
- at the same time being a longer course, with some long connections between holes, AND no benches... I wanna sit and recharge and soak in the forest once in a while - guess I need one of those disc bags that double as seats?
- got real dusty at times, lots of bare soil around baskets and tees especially, needs wood chips!
- a little claustrophobic in a 'maze' of tall vertical trees, playing disc in the high country I want some more variety in the landscape and some more views, other than just pine trees.

Other Thoughts:

I was invited to visit a friend in Mammoth for the weekend (non disc golfer) but made sure to check this course out on my own first before doing hot springs and hiking. Had my mind set on some high country mountain golf and guess I was little disappointed. The professional Discgolfpark signs and tees make it feel legit and inviting but the site and the design left a bit to be desired. Although pretty, it's a flat, monotonous property overall. Even so I think there were a lot of missed opportunities to add interest to the holes to create more shot variety and course rhythm. Mixing in more shorter, technical and/or some place par 4 or 5 holes with mandos would have helped. Too much sameness. I would play again, but wouldn't go out of my way. I just don't think the designer spent enough time to make the most of it. I'll get my views and elevation on the trails this weekend!
