Course needs a major upgrade 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful location set in the middle of Memphis' Shelby Farms.
Good variety of holes (left to right, right to left, some elevation change) including one that is close to 500 ft.
Largely pretty well maintained.

Cons:

Not enough parking at hole 1.
*It is no longer an 18 hole course.* They have removed three baskets, (admittedly because they were in terrible shape) but it has been over 6 months and there is no improvement.
All holes are basically par 3s.
Occasionally, high grass makes it difficult to locate discs in the fairway.
Some poison ivy in the rough.
None of the tee pads are big enough.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course... but with all of the improvements that have been put in place at Shelby Farms, they need to put some into this course.

Pros:

This course is in a large, beautiful park with an area devoted exclusively to disc golf. It has concrete tees and multiple pin positions. The tee signs are nice and list the distance to each basket. I really like that unused sleeves were marked with a 3 foot tall white pipe. This allows you to more easily figure out which position the basket is in.

The course is very long with only a couple holes under 300 ft and roughly half of them over 400 ft. A lake comes into play on a few holes and a stream on another one, depending on the pin position. There are a couple nice shots that force a turnover and a few fall away greens that add to the challenge.

Cons:

With the exception of a few holes, this course is basically wide open and boring. To make matters worse, so many of the holes are long par 3's where you have little chance of getting a birdie, but getting par is easy. It's just long drive, short approach, putt. Even with the water in play, there really isn't any risk reward here.

The tee pads are only 8ft long. On your typical course this isn't really a con for me, but it is when you're throwing for max distance on most of the holes.

A number of baskets are bent, but still usable; looks like they've been hit by the mowers.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a nice course to practice long drives, and despite its length, it's not a bad beginner course since it's so wide open. But the complete lack of risk/reward and wide open spaces make for a rather boring round.

New course layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 16, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The new holes create much needed challenges. There are great shot varieties now. Great way to get a tan?

Cons:

Hot,hot, hot! No water, little to no shade, no benches, no directions to next holes, and lots and lots of walking back and forth. The tee pads are so short they are almost worthless. Hate to say it..but the natural teepads allow more run up without falling off the end. Could be a great course with a few more modifications.

Other Thoughts:

I know the guys were trying to improve the old course..and they did a good job....as far as golf shots go. I played it for the first time this weekend...and was completely lost. There were multiple baskets with wrong numbers in the same field..(you could see them from one of the teepads)..pick a basket? any basket?
The old layout could be played in a little over an hour...this extra long hike takes ALOT longer...pack water and a snack.
UPDATE...played four more times with the newer layout...still a major disappointment. The game is supposed to be fun...not a bit of fun on this course. Come on guys(designers...I know who you are) you can do alot better..if not tear it up and start over..the bad layout can be corrected. Anyone like to play golf in a pasture?

Pros:

Beautiful park with DISCatcher baskets on every hole. This park is huge and very popular. Great exposure and it shows on the course, with lots of people always playing. The course seems to be kept clean and taken care of by the park. It is a fairly open course with gentle rolling hills, offering some nice elevation changes. It is a fun to play course, that will challenge you on a few well designed holes, and can be especially challenging on windy days.

Cons:

Unfortunately, this is a fairly new course and still needs to work out a few kinks. There are no benches or concrete tees. The course does not loop around at the half way point. The only bathrooms are at the lodge, way away from the course as your driving in, and 1 porta-potty at the start of the course. Also, the lodge is the only place with running water.

Other Thoughts:

Basically, this is a beautiful park, with a decent, fun to play course, but I always leave thinking the design could use something more. There are only 1 set of tees and 1 pin placement for every hole, although there are long tees designed for use in tournaments.

The potential for this course seems to be awesome if some of the holes were redesigned, a few trees planted, multiple tees, concrete tees, and benches would then give it a more professional look and increase the course rating dramatically.
