Shu Pond 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent mix of holes testing all aspects of your game. Multiple baskets now on many holes. Elevation and water in play.

Cons:

Teepads are not the greatest. Some baskets are homemade and could use some more or heavier chains.

Other Thoughts:

Amazing ambiance and environment playing around the pond.

Sweet course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Super friendly owner and course! I loved that the first hole still had his home made basket as an ode to what started it all. Very well designed course making full use of the water hazards on the property. Perfect WI farm setting with a pond, creek and the obligatory lab coming along on the round. Either 2 baskets or 2 tee pads on every hole makes it play more like an 18.

Cons:

If you are picky about baskets and tee pads you might have some complaints in this department, it certainly didn't bother me at all.

Other Thoughts:

You couldn't ask for a nicer guy than Casey to disc with. He got up on a Saturday morning to take me out even though it was raining. He also spent a half hour in the pouring rain helping me find a disc. Can't wait to get back and play it again.

Burnin' Shuquoia 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 2, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Shu Pond is a pretty Cool Landscape resulting from Glacial deposits west of the Niagra Escarpment, between West Shore Green Bay Wetlands and the Oconto/Little Rivers

Farm has a small Rolling Ridge, a Springbrook, Cedar Swamp, Deciduous & Coniferous mixed Woods, and of course Da Pond. Large variety of things here to make the DG stellar

The DGC weaves you in & out of the Woods that surround Shu Farm. Along the Woods edge are Poplars mixed in with Deciduous n Pine Trees. Further into the woods is Cedar Forest. Crossing the Yard brings Water into play multiple times. Out here there's Black Walnuts guarding da Pond, and a great mix of Trees all along the Springbrook. On the other side of the Water is the rolling Ridge that takes you out to the Cedar Swamp, over to a Box Elder Grove, and then back to the final Basket behind Willows near the Springbrook

1s Tee areas take you from Shu Yard to the Woodline. The regular shorter Tees leave an open Drive to the wooded Green, and the Long puts Oldgrowth Trees in the Fairway.
There are Poplars and Sumacs that will eventually give more Shape to the Fairway, and increase the Birdie challenge. There's a second Basket option also

Hole 2 is a very challenging Deuce. You throw under a short Canopy from a slightly Elevated Teebox along a straight Fairway that goes a bit Uphill, with Crabapples loitering in the Fairway. Sweet Basket position Hanging in a group of Poplars, just in the Woodline. 2 also has another Basket, playing Longer into the Woodline

3 is the only ALL Wooded hole. Throw thru a Funky tunnel in Deciduous Woods, with Cedars around the Basket, and old Farm Implementation near the Tees. Long Tee recently added, makes this hole a Beast

4 is the first Water Hole. Tees (Long is a WIP) are back down in the Cedars, and there's two gaps to Shoot up out thru, going to a Basket at the Ponds edge.
There's also a Long Basket position, behind the Pond and just before a dropoff into the Springbrook

5 is Da Pond Hole!!! Both Tees force a throw over the Pond, and behind that is the Springbrook and its Wall of Trees, and behind that is the Basket on the Ridgeside

6/9 Tee from the top of the little Ridge. 6 Bombs out to a landing zone, behind a Poplar Grove and next to the Cedar Swamp. The Short Basket position is on this hillside next to a dropoff. The regular Basket is tunneled into the Cedars, making Deuces very rare. There's Springs behind this Basket, but the Green gets chipped

7 is the first of three straight Water Danger Greens. Tees from inside the Cedars, out and up the Ridge to a Green that retains a big Puddle at the Treeline. The Short Basket position is Framed in a Drybox just before the Water. The Long Basket is up behind the Puddle on the Ledge/Bank

8 Long to Long is a real deal par 4. Bombing from the Long Tee people often land on the wrong side of the Ridge interfering with 6 or 5, and then throw blind upshots missing much of 8s Fairway altogether
8 now has a Short Tee, and it really gives this hole a Distinctly Unique Look. Throws thru a beautiful Box Elder Grove, to a Basket with a small Cattail Pond behind the Green (WIP)

Awesome Bomb Finisher, throwing off the Elevated 6/9 Tee. Springbrook meanders all along the Leftside of the Fairway and Green. A Cluster of mixed Trees and 'The Blob' reside up the Fairway, defending most Birdie attacks

First played Shuies with TallPaul in 15. Have played in all Seasons and most Weather Conditions over these past 6 years. Course is always Gorgeous, and Fun is always our Caddy

Casey has a grand vision, and the course is always improving towards his goal... just at a 'Flip City Pace' : )

Woodchips get spread around on the Holes that Play in the Cedars

Just a couple miles from the West Shore you get that good Lake Michigan Air

Cons:

Oconto doesn't have a DG scene, so there's not a Weekly or any Local Support to speak of

Im Indifferent to Baskets and or Teepads, cause all I need is Earth and a Target... things are Mixed here

Baskets are currently
1 Shumade
1 Yellglow Kingpin
4 DISCatchers
5 Red Insteps
2 Nylon Portable
Shuie currently has 2 Baskets on Holes 1 2 4 6, with plans to have 2 on others

Tees are currently either
Natural 1Short 8Long
Gravel 1Long 2 3Short 4Short
Carpet 3Long 5Short 5Long 6 & 9
Woodchiped 4Long 7 8Short
2 7 6 9 currently have just the 1 Tee area

Other Thoughts:

How many DG Courses are the project of someone who has trekked to and thrown over 900 different courses?!? Add to that, the fantastic diversity of Terrain, Woods, and Water to Design with!?! 9 uniquely individual Holes that compile the Best 9er Ive traversed

Replayability for sure, especially if you think to have Shuie move some Baskets to their Alt Positions after Holing Out the first round, and or throw from the other Tees where there is two

Shu Pond is Private, but Casey is very approachable about having People out to the Pond for an Enjoyable Hike around his families Farm, throwing Discs and Bangin Chains!

Hopefully this review encourages people to go Check out the Pond, cause it's so much more than just a 9er in someone's yard

Well Varied 9 Hole 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 19, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Excellent variation of hole types.
- Very scenic/tranquil and off the beaten path.
- Signage on most or all holes, and signage is rustic looking which fits the course.
- Trash buckets appropriately spaced throughout the course at the tees.
- Water in play, but not too much.
- Forced over the water tee shot.
- Hanging basket.
- Some tight lines required.
- Some elevation.
- Overall a very fun quick course.

Cons:

- I believe one tee sign was not accurate.
- Tee pads are varied between natural and matts I believe.
- The elevation change isn't really drastic, just some up and down here and there.

Other Thoughts:

I really wish I could select a rating of 4.25, but it isn't an option. Don't overshoot hole 4, and watch out for the blind creek on hole 5. Discs are retrievable, but the creek beds seemed pretty steep. Casey will likely want to throw with you, and as the course is private you need to reach out before just showing up. We played in mid November so bugs were not an issue and anything possibly being overgrown was also not an issue. Only a couple holes really require a longer tee shot, but that doesn't bother me. Probably not a good course for a beginner, but excellent for intermediate and should still be fun for advance players if they don't mind somewhat shorter holes. Overall a very fun and diverse semi-private course. Probably one of my top five - nine hole courses.

Hidden gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is well thought out and challenging. If you are an intermediate or advanced player, this course is for you. The owner is a great guy and will be glad to show you the course most of the time. Especially if you bring him a sixer of a good craft brew. Being a private course, it's never crowded and there isn't any traffic associated with a public park.

Cons:

I'm biased because I met Casey through DGCR and I've helped him work on the course.

Other Thoughts:

Seriously, if your looking for a great course in the area, check this place out. Get to know Casey and help make this the best course in the area.

Walk a Mile in Casey's Shu

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 24, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Shu Pond, a private disc golf refuge designed and maintained by owner Casey Shufelt, is located on a 6th generation family farm. An orchard and garden, as well as a small creek and pond, are central to the property. The course wends in and out of several wooded areas, with many holes either playing into the woods from the open or vice versa. Although the course is really probably "moderately wooded" it plays more along the lines of "heavily wooded" in many places. The rough is brutally punishing towards bad shots, but fair on decently executed ones that are only slightly wayward.
- Water comes into play on three holes (#'s 4, 5, and 9). Hole #4's tee sits in the woods, with a RHBH and RHFH route available through tight gaps in the trees out into the open. The pond lurks to the right, pin sitting on the edge. Putts outside the circle force a "layup or risk being wet" decision to be made. Hole #5 shoots over the pond (kinda), a wall of trees with a few gaps to hit, a small creek, and up a slope to an open-area basket. This hole forces either a massive shot through or over the trees, or a strategic layup short of the stream. Although the pond sits to the left, the real risk of getting wet is missing a gap in the tree wall and falling into the creek.
- Elevation is used spectacularly well throughout. While Shu Pond's property does not contain any epic- level elevation, all the good stuff is used to its utmost potential. Hole #4's pin placement near the pond bank creates good risk and reward. #5's sloped green and stream create a nice "down then up" wrinkle. Hole #6 shoots off the high point of the course, past a solitary tree in the middle of the fairway, down into a heavily wooded area, basket tucked into the trees maybe 50-60'. Hole #8 is, to me, the signature hole of the course. Teeing off down a dirt road, the fairway slopes off to the right and left. Left of the road and you're left with a blind up and over out of the rough. Right of the road leaves a low-ceiling, tricky approach (perfect for rollers). Down the road leaves a good approach, but with the basket recently pushed back farther into a green surrounded by tree branches, you'll need a bit of luck to pick up a three. I kept referring to #8 as "The Sidewinder" because of the way it appears like a gigantic snake, twisting it's body back and forth. Hole #9, "The Top of The Pond" shot, shoots from the same pad as #6, only heading in the other direction. The creek is far to the left, but still in play on wayward shots. A downhill shot requires navigation around a few mature trees and good placement to have an open approach to the final basket. A large barn to the right cuts off some of the wider hyzer routes.
- The trees are used very well. Tight gaps out into the open. Tight gaps from the open into a wooded green. "Gates" through which one must execute their approach to reach the green (#'s 5 and 7). Lone guardian trees. Dark fairy tale looking pine forest. Scrubby deciduous woodland. Lots of beauty throughout the course in this regard. Casey seems to have a really good eye for picking out parts of the property with really cool trees, and maximizing the design around them. At one point it feels like a video game transition from an idyllic grassy field into a dark foreboding patch of pine.
- Amenities are scant but sufficient for a guided round. Without signage, a guide that knows the layout is a must. Bridges to cross the stream, mulch in low-laying areas, and other similar treatments make this course easily accessible for most. Tees are mixed, with the country road in front of the house serving as #1's tee. Several tees have some sort of boxed-in mulch or similar tee. A few are natural dirt/grass. They all play decently enough, with #4 and #7 being the only ones where I wish I had a bit more room to work with. The baskets are a mix of random practice baskets and homemade targets. The homemade targets incorporate old tires and actually catch reasonably well.
UPDATE: to reflect dual tees and pin positions, I bumped this course rating up .5 discs. Variety is the spice of life, and multiple Shu Pond layouts is tastysauce.

Cons:

- Occasionally the course does not reward good shots. #8's green and right-side of the fairway being the most glaring example. A great drive on that hole would time and time again lead to almost no look at birdie and sometimes wouldn't even result in par, due to the low-hanging branches preventing a clean look at the basket.
- A lack of signage is understandable, but would go a long way to making this course more presentable and professional looking. Not necessarily detailed maps; but something uniform and clean looking.
- The tees, while serviceable, were probably the main drawback to this otherwise fine course. Tee areas could be widened/cleaned-up just a bit more than they were. Large groups would have a tough time squeezing into some of the tee areas.
- Mosquitoes. Ho boy. Bring bug spray. If you're from the immediate area, you already know what's up. If not, this course is basically unplayable without spray. That said, what Midwest course doesn't struggle with skeeters from time-to-time? More of a public service announcement than a true con.
- The course heavily favors a RHFH approach, although there's enough variety to keep it from being every single shot. Hole #'s 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 all favor RHFH to some degree, with #'s 1, 2, and 6 being the most egregious offenders.

Other Thoughts:

- To the right of #8's tee, off the fairway, is what I can only describe as a "dead hooker pile." Old mattresses, ashes, and random rusty junk: that screams "dead hooker pile" to me. Stay out of the dead hooker pile unless you're jonseing for a hybrid case of lockjaw-syphilis.
- I kept circling around and playing again. Every time through I thought, "I can score better than that." Every time I got roughed up again. And I kept wanting more. There's no real "signature" hole out here...in some respects they are ALL signature holes, with #1 perhaps being the weakest of the nine. Hole #'s 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are all awesomesauces. This is the most epic nine hole course I've played to date. Shu Pond might be a bit rough around the edges, but it's a diamond in the rough.
- Be sure to contact Casey prior to showing up for a round here. He's a good guy and super fun to disc with, so don't be shy! Make a new friend! Say hello to Cooper the disc dog! Enjoy yourself in the small but cozy clubhouse pre- and post-round! Walk a mile in Casey's Shu, I guarantee you'll find a challenging, progressive brand of disc golf that's incredibly fun and addictive!
- UPDATE: 7/18/2022. Shu Pond has aged like fine wine, and a lot of work has gone into getting it just right. I've held back awarding a 4-disc rating to any 9-hole course for almost 12 years now. But the truth is, I haven't played a better 9-hole course in all that time, so Shu Pond truly deserves it!. 4-discs it is!
