Figure out when to play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fairly typical park course located in a fairly cool city park in southwest Bakersfield. The 14 acre park features a pavilion, a 25 yard swimming pool with a small wading pool, multi-purpose room, stage, lighted tennis courts, horseshoe pits, par exercise course, two play areas, multi-use sports field, and two large picnic areas. The pavilion area is very cool with a fully shaded basketball court that can be played regardless of weather. The park also has water fountains and restrooms. There were several other disc golfers out here playing when we were here, with some doing field work in the main field, so it seems like you'd have plenty of company. The course has nice new DGA baskets and the average fiberglass tee signs. Holes ranged from about 175 feet to 350 feet in length. The first 5 holes play through large trees, exercise areas, and light poles making for some interesting obstacles. The park seems to be very well maintained landscaping and litter wise, but you can see graffiti and vandalism throughout the park.

Cons:

Very busy park with a lot of other activities in play. The first five holes follow the jogging trail around the park and it gets quite busy. The park is adjacent to a school with lots of little rugrats running around. Didn't help playground was undergoing renovation when we were there, and hole 7s tee was behind a chainlink fence. We simply teed from in front of the fence on the grass. The course is perfectly flat with many holes having very little obstacle.

Other Thoughts:

The truth is I think I liked the park better than the disc golf course. This park seems to have everything from disc golf to swimming to a year round basketball court. This park is just too busy for the disc golf to be an enjoyable round unless as others have mentioned you get here on off hours or figure out the best times. When we were there, there was someone picnicking at a bench about halfway from hole 1s tee to the basket. It seemed a very odd place for a picnic area, or perhaps an odd place for a disc golf hole. Other holes played around the exercise areas forcing carries a few times as we played. There are 18 dual tees with 9 being the original concrete tees, and the other 9 being marked spots on the sidewalks. All in all we ended up playing about 14 holes per round and carrying about 4 per round. We never were able to play hole 1, but I think we did manage every other hole. If you did manage to get out here and play when no one else was present I could see this being a fun round, but you're probably going to have to be a local to know when that is.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

On the plus side the baskets are nearly brand new and have the heaviest/sturdiest baskets I have ever seen. The other big plus is that the park is always well maintained: grass cut, trash picked up, etc. Very friendly local players...this is a must as the course is impossible for a first-timer to navigate without someone to assist. Those are the pluses.

Cons:

Despite what was said in other reviews, the tees for 1-9 are not easy to find. They are super easy to find after you played the course a half dozen times but before that some are basically impossible to find without someone showing you. I am sure someone will mark this as a bad review for me being negative...I just want new people coming to the course to be aware and not have to hunt around and hope someone comes by who can help you find it.

If you play when kids are out of school (school is next door) or on a weekend, expect to wait and have some unplayable holes. People throw footballs all around the baskets, kids hang from them, others play ball all over the fairways. There are just times you shouldn't go. The course is really short, great for a beginner but super easy with almost no obstacles (except hole 1) for an experienced player.

Other Thoughts:

I appreciate the fact that the course exists and that it is close to my house. I appreciate that the locals are super nice. If it weren't so close to home I probably wouldn't ever choose to play this course.

I really don't like my reviews to be too far off the average but I just can't bring myself to give this course a 3 (good). I hate to say that...I love disc golf and I love that this course is only a half mile from my home but it is really a tough course to play for a variety of reasons, listed above. The course really is "reasonable" at best. Sorry if you think this is a 4, it just isn't.

Intermediate 9 Hole in Nice Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

2 sets of cement tees for each basket. Some lengthy holes. Lightly wooded with trees dictating your shot on most holes. Moderately easy to navigate with hole 1's sign still standing right next to the parking long. Very nice, well manicured park with many facilities and many other recreational areas on site.

Cons:

Very open course playing around and through a large open field. Most of the signs are missing or destroyed. The baskets have seen better days. The layout can get a little tricky after hole 3. The disc golf course is definitely not the main attraction at this park, and waiting to shoot is common. A lot of holes have one tee that throws from the sidewalk and there are no markings indicating where to throw from.

Other Thoughts:

This is a 9 hole course with two sets of tees for each hole, not an 18. The difference between the tees is significant on some holes, but mostly on what type of shot to throw, and not on the overall difficulty of the shot. The difference is minimal on some holes. The layout after hole 3 is a bit tricky, so if you're playing this course for the first time and aren't sure about the layout, just ask the closest person to you. I asked a ~65 year old woman walking her dog and she told me the layout as if she had played it a hundred times. The park is usually packed, and I think most people that frequent this park know the layout of the disc golf course.
