Wow 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

You better bring your best shots
Holes - mostly - easy to find.

Cons:

One or two places had trouble finding basket location.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a great amount of shot varieties. It's much like Stafford in Novato. Pads are great. Lots of shots that will ROLL DOWNHILL in a heartbeat. Play accordingly. Lots of fun to be had here, and, there is camping - tent or RV. Horseback riding, archery course. And more.

It's a Killer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2013 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

In a word: "brutal." I happened to play the course on a 90 degree day last week and did not bring an adequate amount of water (plus was sunburned already from the previous day). But the length of the course combined with the elevation changes made this a real struggle. As a player you're basically going to be walking up and down big hills all day. I liked the course though because it was so challenging (probably the toughest I've ever played); I mostly wish I had chosen a different day to play it. I have a lot of respect for this course as a worthy adversary.

Big hills 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays in a secluded corner of a large property. The long walk to the course means that you have that area to yourself, it didn't seem like there would be any interference from non-disc golfers here. The terrain is very cool here, with lots of ups and downs. The hills are used fairly well to create some interesting shots and some tricky greens where roll-aways are definitely a possibility if you don't land your shot carefully.

There is a nice balance here of left and right turning shots, at least in the pin setup I played. The alternate sleeves looked like they'd add some nice variety as well. The rubber tees were in good shape, and provided plenty of traction. There are enough trees on many of the holes that you have to shape some lines. The rough is not all that thick but you will sometimes find yourself having to make tricky recovery shots if you miss your line.

Cons:

The signage was not very accurate. It appeared that many of the pin placements have been changed since the signs were made, so the distances and hole shapes were not very useful. Many of the holes required walking up the fairway to see where to throw, and even then there are a few spots where multiple baskets are in view and it can be tricky to figure out where to go next.

I didn't feel like this land was quite used to it's potential. There were a lot of shots where despite the big hills, you threw at a basket at the same elevation as the tee. I liked the use of hilly greens, but more shots that really make you control a disc up or down some of the big hills would have added another level of fun and challenge. It's a real shame not to have a single downhill bomb type shot with the excellent terrain available.

There was some nasty poison oak in spots, keep an eye out if you're under the trees. Some of the grass was getting pretty long when I played, it gets a bit frustrating searching for discs that land in the middle of the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Beginners will find this course a bit daunting, with a long hilly walk and some tricky shots, but with limited punishment it's approachable for most players. More experienced throwers will find this course reasonably straightforward, with a few really interesting challenges.

Note that you're a long way from the car for the entire round, bring a good amount of water and some snacks.

Beautiful Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Rubber tees
18 baskets
This course is set in a fantastic multi use park in Napa CA.
Even though it is multi use, the course is set away from other activities in the park.
This scenic park offers great views of Napa and the surrounding area.
The course was not incredibly long, but was a challenge because of the hilly terrain.
Lots of roll away potential.
Offers a variety of shots, and didn't favor any particular shot.
Dense oaks provide tough obstacles if you have an errant shot.
Birdies are available if you can get a disc to stay on the fast greens.
Putting offered some pucker factor because of the fast greens.
Really nice benches at tee boxes were welcomed because this course is a hike.
The place was not busy at all!! (not sure if that is normal)

Cons:

Not a lot of cons to think of.

Never got a top of the world type shot despite the hilly terrain.

The only restrooms are at the entrance which is not that close to the course.

Greens were so fast that it seemed that there was maybe to much luck involved on some of them.

Other Thoughts:

This course was set up in an medium distance when I played it. The flow was nice and the trails were easy to follow. We had no problems with thistles and foxtails, but I heard that is a problem during the summer. This is a hike, but not bad compared to other mountain style courses I have played. That being said, a pair of boots would be a good call.

This place is definitely worth playing if you are in the area!

worth the trip 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a really neat layout, with a nice combination of holes and differing pin locations. Good signage with a round disc pointing out the basket location, as A, B or C. Despite this, rarely can you see the basket you are throwing to. You will get to use all sorts of throws to get around the tree obstacles, though it is certainly within reason to score a few birdies with good shots.

Cons:

The tee boxes are not very solid, basically carpeted dirt, and the limited space can make it difficult to figure out which basket you should be throwing at. Also, the numbers on the basket are not very visible, and rarely pointed at the tee box, so you have to walk all the way to them, and around them before you figure out what number the basket has. Of course, the dreaded Napa roll can and will strike when you screw up, but that is part of the game.

Other Thoughts:

Skyline Park is a great multi-use park with hiking, biking, horseback riding and an archery course. You can camp out there, and all the activities are well worth the minimal $5 per car entry fee. There is a nice walk from the parking lot to the first tee, maybe a half mile, and I would highly recommend hiking shoes or boots. I played it in my Chacos, and the steep slopes and high grass when you go off course make for difficult walking. There is also a good bit of poison oak and brambles, so long pants are not out of the question.

This is the first course i ever played, and is pretty difficult compared to the others. I go out there every time I am in Napa, and really love it. It's basically my California home course, and easily as challenging, though different, from my La home course, Buhlow.

Roll away in the Napa Wilderness 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Skyline Wilderness offers excellent variety and is absolutely worth the $5 entry fee. When you enter the park and start the 10-15 minute hike to Hole #1, it is very easy to see why this is a top-notch course.

Although this is a muti-use facility, the disc golf course is well separated from other activities.

More than a few times during the round, I found myself soaking in the panoramic views and taking pictures instead of concentrating on my next throw.

The tee signs on every hole certainly helped with navigation.

The teepads were a mix of concrete and rubber. I understand the locals are working to install concrete pads on all of the holes. There were also brooms and benches on most of the teepads, which is very nice.

The baskets are not new, but they are in good shape.

Elevation is utilized very well on most of the holes here. I heard a few groups mention the "Napa Rollers" that easily turn a birdie into a bogey or double bogey. Thankfully, I did not experience my own Napa Roller until #14.

While there were plenty of warning signs for the local wildlife, I did not see any boars, snakes or anything else.

There are plenty of opportunities to throw hyzers, anhyzers, thumbers and pretty much any other shot you are able to throw.

Similar to other California courses I have played (Coyote Point, Ryan Ranch, Stafford Lake, etc) this is a physically demanding course and it is not for the faint of heart. Bring plenty of water, snacks, etc. You will not want to run back to the parking lot in the middle of a round here.

Cons:

As other reviews have mentioned, there is no huge downhill bomber shot. While the terrain certainly allows for it, I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of at least 1 opportunity to truly grip it and rip it here.

I'm reaching now, but the lack of concrete teepads is always a con for me. I also noticed that some of the rubber teepads were too short. I typically use a 3 or 4 step approach and did not have enough room on several holes.

Other Thoughts:

The $5 entry fee will come along with a rough course map. I found that the map was not completely accurate. However, this only caused a problem for me between #13 and #14.

Napa is not for beginners, especially those that do not know how to handle constant elevation changes. Having said that, any new players should check out some other courses and then find a guide and get to Napa for a very challenging and fun disc golf experience.

Some work to do. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Scenery
-Challenging. You'll use most of your discs and many of your throws.
-Almost always putting on an angle
-Dramatic elevation changes
-Signage and navigation(for the most part)
-Ranger at the gate was SUPER helpful. Thanks!

Cons:

-$ to play
-Surprisingly lacked an epic downhill bomber hole. The elevation would certainly allow for it.
-Some tees felt short, and I don't have a long run-up.
-Holes 15A, 15B, 16, and 17 detract from what could be great experience. Unclear fairways and navigation are the issue here. FIX THIS!

Other Thoughts:

Challenging course that's also a nice workout. I didn't mind the hike in and out. Made for a good warm-up/warm-down. Great scenery and topography. Time for a little more work to be done on holes 15-17, along with some tees that should be longer here and there.

Great Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

MY home course, so I am a little biased.
-Very technical. During the winter the course is in the short pin positions due to daylight hours. This does cause most of the shots to be short and technical. Only about 9 pins are visible from tee pads.
-During summer pins are usual in long positions, which makes the course that much more difficult.
-"Napa Rolls"....Some don't like it, but it makes the game much more challenging.
-Beautiful outdoor secluded scenery. Its not in a city or urban setting.

Cons:

-Pay to play.
-Very HOT in the summer, sometimes up to 100 degrees in the middle of the day. Very dry, bring lots of water.

Other Thoughts:

This course is great for a short round in the winter, or long round in the summer. Tee pads are being replaced by concrete, and signage is really good. The major drawback of this course is the 1/4 mile walk to the first tee, and the constant elevation change. For those not in good shape, take your time as the course can wear you out. If you can shoot par on this course, most other courses are putty in your hands!

Pros:

Fantastic scenery. My 20-something daughter stopped playing and just took photos. The steep hills are a great walking workout. Fun to do some of those swooping downward throws. Good rubber pads. Nice baskets. Hills plus trees and wind made this a very challenging course.

Cons:

Costs $5 to get into the park, but it's worth it.

Other Thoughts:

If you wear shorts, your legs will get scratched up from the scrubby thorny bushes.

Difficult fun in wine country 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Set in a large wilderness park. Feeling of remoteness, even though there were a number of groups playing. The entire course is surrounded by gorgeous, untouched scenery. Variety of different drives required from teebox. Retrieved all 3 temporarily lost discs! Nice teeboxes and decent baskets. Got lucky my first time playing here as most baskets were playing short.

Cons:

Grass is very high right now, making me very glad that I wore khakis. Lots of poison oak, even in the fairways. Ideal to play with a partner to help spot & look for discs. I spent nearly 90 minutes more that I should have looking for & retrieving lost discs. Bad drives on both 6 & 9 got stuck in some tall trees. I was lucky enough to get one down with a rock, and the other with a young DGer willing to climb and shake the tree!

Other Thoughts:

Getting into and out of the course is about a half mile hike into the foresty area from the parking lot. The office at the entrance gate stocks about 75 brand new Star/Champion discs for sale. $Five dolla, no holla! You get a map of the park, along with a hand drawn map of the DG course & some hospitality. The teebox at #4 makes for an ideal smoke spot.

Lots of great things about this course including a wilderness feel, no road noise. There are a variety of throws available but if you love the tomahawk throw you will especially love it here.

Cons:

Long walk but its just part of the courses draw.

Another Cali Wilderness Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Skyline Wilderness is another California course cut from the same rugged wilderness terrain as Stafford Lake, Lake Casitas and Ryan's Ranch. That is rugged rolling hills, mature oaks, deep cut ravines, srub brush, some panoramic views and wildlife abounds. As with the other courses it makes for the almost perfect topography on which to build a course. This is a private campground. We played on a Friday in August and the cost was $6. So the course was at it's driest and brownest but the grass was not so long. There is a fairly long hike in past the archery range (just over a 1/4 mile) past the sign warning you about wild boar, rattle snakes and mountain lions. This is not a course for families or newbies. Or the un-armed. Maybe bring your 45 cal. discs. We did see deer and also caught glimpses of wild turkeys on a couple of occasions. It's for the serious player up to the tournament level player. The pads were extra long rubber with brooms at each hole. They were benches usually placed in the shade. Great informative signs. Great variety of long-short-right-left holes. 3-5 basket placements per holes would make playing the course a different expierience each time out.

Cons:

I felt # 16 played like a filler hole. All others had a fair route while this one just felt it had been stuck in there. Didin't care for it! The long walk in at the beginning and end. Bring water and maybe snacks. Doesn't have the natural beauty of Lake Casitas or Stafford Lake. The dreaded Napa roll got me on one hole and definitely adds to the challenge. Doesn't have a scenic "Top Of The World Shot."

Other Thoughts:

A not to be missed course in the Bay Area. It's fun to compare it to the other so very similar courses. This is pretty much a carbon copy of the Ryan's Ranch course in Monterey. Play it and compare the two. Play it and compare your score. Play it and compare your sunburn and blisters, and aching bones.

Tough to beat Napa 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I have played pretty much all the courses in the Bay Area, and this one has recently become my most favorite. There's just so much to recommend it. A few of the best attributes:

-Nice layout, use of terrain
-Nice variety of holes, some short, some longer, different curves
-Great shaded chill spots next to every hole. Especially crucial cause it gets hot out there
-Beautiful setting
-Super well marked, best tee signs I have ever seen at any course
-Nice walk out to the course
-Never anyone there, even on a weekend
-Plenty of birdieable holes
-At the same time, plenty of challenging holes where if you hit some trees you could easily end up with a 6
-Also some tough landing areas, where if you miss it you could roll a long way
-Not too far away (50 mins from Berkeley)

Cons:

-Hot hot hot. Just played on a July Sunday and it was 90 degrees. It's manageable, but definitely takes something out of yo.
-A lot of trees, and the trees are easy to get stuck in
-A couple holes are kind of stupid in the sense that the pathway for driving is so small, it's a little ridiculous. But even those make for decent holes cause if you get through they are typically short
-It could do with one or two longer holes. There are not a lot of holes where you can really open up and let loose. Although that can be good if you are playing with a mixed group because length becomes less of an issue.
-Needs better tee pads, but really not a big issue.

Other Thoughts:

I just really like playing this course. it's well put together, beautiful terrain, good conditions. Fun days guaranteed for sure.

What's in a name? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

NorCal wilderness. Virtually perfect land for a course. It has everything you need to build a course around with the exception of a water hazard. Mutliple basket positions. Good signs at the tee pads with a washer and screw that show current position. Navigation was simple. Trails are pretty obvious. Good use of trees and elevation to create challenging holes. Basket positions were good. Nothing seemed squeezed in without a plan. I was also never bored, or felt like there was repetitive shots.

It's tough, but there are ace and birdie opportunities. I hit 3 birdies my first time out. Thank you thumber!. It helps to be able to go over the trees on some holes.

Course is off a trail well away from the rest of the park. You are in the wilderness. Bring water.

Cons:

Rubber tee pads. They are in good shape, but not concrete. I didn't really have any problems with them so I 'd rate this as a pretty insignificant con. They could be better, but they don't have a negative effect.

Long walk to course from the parking area. Including walking along the archery range. Yes, that's what all those fake elk are about. I hope the archers are good. Horse poop on the trail. You are sharing the trail so watch where you walk.

Some blind shots that should really have a spotter. Tall grass also makes locating discs tough. The name says wilderness for a reason. A few of the holes are very heavily wooded, and have significant 'rough'. Watch where you throw.

Other Thoughts:

A nice, solid course. The cons are pretty small. Course plays fair, and makes you use multiple shots. I would highly recommned this course as a destination spot. It's only about 30 minutes form Stafford Lake and close to all the joys of wine country.

-Beautiful setting
-Nice footpath to first tee. Feels like your hiking into secluded back country to play a round. This was great being a visitor to the course but I can see how it can get old if you're a local.
-Very well maintained
- Good tee pads with brooms and benches
-Great elevation change
-Full spectrum of technicality with most holes being technical to very technical
-Not too busy. My buddy and I came in the middle of the day and we only saw one other group playing the course
-Nice signs that indicate basket placement
-uphill and downhill holes

Cons:

-No dogs allowed (disc golf is a little lonely without my furry companion)
-Needs some longer, more open bomber holes
-Napa roll
-Pay to play
-Might consider upgrading to cement tees
-Grass can get long requiring some searching to find your disc

Pros:

-Beutifull location with hills, valleys, creeks, mature oaks, wildlife, and great views.
-Lots of variety, uphill, downhill, sidehill, across valleys, left turning, right turning, etc...
-Secluded seting in the hills of Napa, close to town, but far enough away to not feel crowded by the city.
-Challenging. I saw some of the best players I know chewed up by this course.
-Benches on most holes
-Area of the park thats not used much by other park users
-Fire Extingushers on every hole
-Multiple pin positions on all holes
-Rubber teepads in good condition with brooms on each hole.
-Great Locals, these guys are lots of fun.

Cons:

-Some holes almost require you to throw a thumber (hole 15).
-"Napa Rolls": The art of landing within 20' of the basket (or hitting the basket) then rolling 300' down the hill behind you.
-Signage didn't feel 100% accurate.
-Not a beginers course, as it will beat up on even an experenced golfer

Other Thoughts:

Napa is a beutifull course with many great fun holes that will both challenge and entertain players with some experence in disc golf. For beginers and people who are out of shape this course will frustrate and wear you out. It is full of massive elevation change throughout the course. Some holes I thought were a little unfair if you don't have a big thumber in your bag (hole 15). Everyone it seems, no mater how good you are, will get at least one disc that will roll away and down the hill way far away from where you want it, this is just the way it is, that's Napa for you. Make sure to bring some snacks and water as this will be a long round.

-Makes for a good variety of shots - short and long, uphill and downhill, low visibility and high visibility.
-It's pretty accessible. If you are going to the Napa Valley, chances are you'll find yourself within a few miles of this course at some point.

Cons:

-Tees are a little short, which is understandable considering most of them are carved out of the hill the course is on. They are in very good condition though.
-My wife thinks the course could have been more spread out, but I didn't think that was a problem.

Random Thoughts:
I really struggled with this review. My girlfriend and I are beginners and we love a good hike. Having said that, we started this course and had a great time through the first 3rd, although this definitely isn't a beginner course as most holes are well outside our range, but once we got to what I will call 'The Devil's Slope', things changed. The bottom line on the holes in this area is that you can throw a good or even great throw and if the disc gets on its edge, kiss it goodbye, because it's going to roll down the slope a loooooooooong way, and even throwing it back from the bottom of the slope may just have it roll right back to you or even past you. In truth, this was quite funny the first few times it happened, but right around the 4th or 5th sweaty trek, it lost some of the fun. I found myself wondering if this was a fair fight. Who knows, maybe it's better at certain times of the season. But here's the thing, it finished up well on the last few holes, I look back on it and laugh...and I can't wait to go back. The Pros simply outweigh the Cons.

Bottom line: Bring water. Get ready for a hike. Set aside three hours. You'll laugh, cry, and swear, but it'll be fun.

Update 11/2009: We played this again a couple weeks ago during a tournament. WOW. I didn't realize how much more difficult this course could get when they moved the baskets to the pro spots. I have a lot of improvement to make... They were also installing some more improvements such as new signs, which are MUCH better. I'm also 90% sure that the basket I mention above is either a duplicate or remnant or something. It's around the basket area for 13 and as there was another basket in the area, I'm reasonably confident you don't need to throw at the impossible one. Anyway, keep up the great work guys!

Update 03/2010: Got to play this again with the latest improvements. All new signs are up and most of the holes are back in human-range (more on this in a minute). I also think I figured out the mystery basket, which is now non-duplicated. I believe this basket is used twice. I believe it's the basket for 13 and for 15A which I didn't see before until they put basket #14 on the far side of the moon (Love this shot btw but wow is it far). 15A is a tough tough shot. I see why it's an alternate. The conditions are also quite a bit different this time of year with the grass high. The rollaways are still lurking but not quite as much. Now, back to the basket positions....attention Mr. and/or Miss Course Designer(s), I have a question: Seriously, EVERY shot is a par 3? Really?! Not even a hint of an amateur par 4 on some of those over 400 ft. uphill shots? I mean, no love at all?! Seriously though, even if it is so that the 3 reigns supreme, I continue to love this course and appreciate your efforts. I just think it might be the hardest course to shoot par on in the Bay Area, with the longer basket positions anyway. Not that this is a bad thing. It just means I have lots of practice ahead of me.

The course is a challenge for any player as the variety on shots that you need to score well (-3 or -4) for an experienced player. it is advised to use a spotter on many of the holes as you may get a bad roll or skip and there are some spots that will eat some plastic. only $5 to get a day pass and there is a store down the road that sells discs if you loose something you dont have a double. If the family likes the out doors this is a great destination = fun for all. never saw more than 10 people on the course and no waiting ever there is a thursday night weekly 5:00pm $5 with an ace pool. a great group of guys and a good place to go to get an invete to "the arm farm" also in napa.

Cons:

there are some patches of poison oak here and there but not near ant pathes but a stray disc may be discovered in a patch and in the ckeek bed ith weeds will hide a lost disc ouy could walk right over it and never see it. Rough landings near some of the baskets can be hard on dicscs bot worth it to sacrifice for a great shot. The trees are pretty thick and can hold onto a high driver but there are poles and long pvc tubes under the most popular traps to try to get them down with

Other Thoughts:

the bonus hole between 14 &15 is a nice bonus if you dont get in the brambles. i yhink this is one of the nicest courses i have played in california
