Simply Excellent drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 2, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Two sets of tees. Gold tees offer a solid challenge for any skill level. You'll have to work for birdies.

+ Multiple pin positions for many holes.

+ Excellent variety. The front 9 plays through dense woods, while the back 10 is more open. There's also a good variety of distances, with some holes being 200-250' putter / mid tee shots, sprinkled between monster par 5's.

+ Course map is very accurate, and pars are listed for every tee and basket position.

+ Signs are detailed, and generally are present at both sets of tees.

+ Course is well broken in. Very little to no undergrowth to contend with if you stay in the fairways.

+ Plenty of signage directing players to the next tee.

+ Despite playing through a multi-use park, the course has a very secluded feel.

+ Tons of benches. Some holes even have multiple benches.

Cons:

- Some holes don't feature a gold tee, instead sharing the blue tee.

- While the baskets have a neat looking paint job, they're a little tougher to see than yellow bands.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of the best courses I've played this year. I have no idea how the rating is under 3.5.

The hole distances listed on DGCR are out of date as of July 2023. The course seems to have been changed over the years, as there are holes that now feature multiple pins with no mention of these updates on DGCR. I uploaded the new map with pars and distances to the photos section.

This is one of the best courses I've played in 2023, and I've played over 30 new courses this year. I had a fantastic time here. I played the gold tees and they offered the level of challenge I look for in a gold level course.

Diverse selection of tee shots, secluded feeling, multiples tees and pins, this course had it all.

Wish this was my home course! I'll definitely be back.

Great park course!

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Most holes are wooded and scenic; flight lines are open and the rough was not much of a penalty if you threw off or knicked a tree. Great baskets. course was relatively well marked. Some shot-making needed for L and R bending fairways. A few dog-legs and interesting pin placements. Bonus 19th hole in case you didn't have enough fun.

Cons:

OB areas on the left or right side of 4 or so holes because of proximity to Town Park (the OBs are not really much of an influence on your play). Two drainage ditches have disc-swallowing potential if the water was higher and muddy.

Other Thoughts:

Had a GREAT time playing this course twice when we came thru town on vacation...most holes were medium or long distances cut thru the shaded woods around the Town park. Rough was beginner-friendly. Most holes had a bag-table and garbage can; nice map of the hole at each tee pad.

Likely the best course in Myrtle Beach 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Quiet, peaceful. Even with a stream of people behind me. Nicely separated from the rest of the park, works around said fields along 4 sides. Pretty dense woods with a few open, parkland holes (nos. 10, 11, 17). Number one is a feel-good start. I (of all people) birdied it! Very ample parking in the main park lot to supplement the small DG parking strip. Real restroom buildings that are clean! Two practice baskets and an open field behind the park office to warm up the drive as well. The south(?) edge of said field is lined with pines. You can practice your tight-line drives back into the field from the opposite side of this treeline. Good skip and slide on pine needles; works for me! Tight fairways are a challenge but not oppressive (barring nos. 4 and 18), and some are wider than others. Big dog-leg left holes at nos. 13 and 16 make you think how you will reduce the strokes next time. Dog-leg right no. 7 also. After being in the woods for 9 holes, no. 10 is a wonderful relief. I was so happy, I parred it (smile). I like the stepover shifts of the fairway of nos. 5 and 11; layup or go for broke? The totally tree-crowded basket of no. 12 also gives you the option of trying to squeeze a disc through or throwing a hyzer (righties) around the right side (or forehand or Annie for you lefties). It appears that the creek/ditch is *not* out of bounds at nos. 11 and 17. Not marked as such. Indeed, at 17, there is a string line on the *outside* of the left line of trees that is marking OB (generous!!). There is a hole 19 that serves as a cool-down and recovery from whatever happened on 18 (good and bad). It is most welcome!

Cons:

Locals tell me it is a swamp when it rains. (I played on a dry December day, sunny and 70-something degrees. Lovely.) Non-disc golfers do get in the way. One guy was driving his RMC truck (that he got for Xmas, no doubt) around the basket of no. 9 while I was trying to putt in... another on a bicycle was rolling down the fairway of no. 17 while I am trying to drive. These were infrequent; just the usual annoying. I like where the park is located in general, though getting there (from the oceanfront) is pretty roundabout with Enterprise Road closed to local traffic only. Don't know if that is a permanent or temporary closure. Raised baskets at nos. 14, 16 (short?), and 18 are rather gimmicky, but I didn't mind them. They do exist for added challenge and variety.

Other Thoughts:

No. 4 is perhaps the tightest of the longer holes. I have seen pros (on YouTube) intentionally throw out to the open parallel lane. I will do that too next time! No. 18 is intimidating to look at, but I think a strong arm can get a putter drive down the long lane (twice) to the cove and green. There are two teepads for most holes and basket placement can vary at most (all?) holes. Some (including 18) were in the long position the day I played. This course is harder than Splinter City, but not by a tremendous amount. If Socastee is an A, then Splinter City is a B or B+, I think.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 14, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a surprisingly large amount of variety considering the utter lack of elevation. The front nine is a rather charming wooded course with a few par 4's. The woods provide an obvious challenge although most all par 3's have a clear ace line.
The back nine of the course opens up bit coming out of the woods. There is another par 4 as well as three par 5's on the back giving you a few chances to really let one rip.
The flow of the course is quite excellent. There were a few spots that were unclear where the next tee was in the past, but the course is under a new superintendent who has made great strides and improvements.
There is a new map at the beginning of the course showing tee locations, pars, and footage. Trees have recently been removed from certain greens allowing the use of a second pin. The biggest improvement to the course i would have to say though is the groundwork they have done to reduce flooding. there are several new irrigation ditches dug out to drain problem areas that are prone to flooding.

Cons:

I do not have many cons to speak of but they are:
1. Bugs! - If its summer bring all the bug spray you can. (spring fall and winter you're good)
2. Flooding - This course is flat and endures rain a lot! The back nine has the hardest time with flooding and a few spots on the front. (this is currently being worked on by the locals though)
3. Hole 18 - this hole is long. it is straight. it is insanely narrow. the rough is very unforgiving. it feels rushed to tie the whole round up and get you as close to the parking lot as possible.
3.1 I believe if they opened up parts of each side of this fairway it would be all together a more enjoyable hole for pros and beginners alike.

Other Thoughts:

This course has recently started having improvements made to it via new management and such. I already enjoyed this course very much and i believe it will only improve. It is by far the best DGC in the surrounding area, if you're in town you have to give it a go.

Coastal Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Front 9 of this course is beautifully laid out
Lot of distance variations tons of variety of shots, I typically use every disc in the bag on this course
Multiple Tees
Beautiful old growth coastal pines...several of them named, giant sentinels guarding the fairways
The warm smell of cedar adds to the ambiance of the course
Back 9 contains some fun features with elevated pin & island green

Cons:

The back 9 is separated by a longish walk from the front 9 and doesn't have same flow as the front
Given it's proximity to the coast not much elevation variation
Quite a bit of junk debris on back nine too: tires, pallets, rusted out metal
Another longish walk from end 18 past soccer/football fields back to car

Other Thoughts:

I typically visit Myrtle Beach twice a year and playing this course is typically my favorite part of the trip and a welcome respite from all the other tourist trap attractions.

I don't typically review courses since I wouldn't be able to add much that wasn't already said by previous reviewers but I feel the average score on this severely undersells it. If this course was simply the front nine I would consider this a 4.5 star course with the only opportunities for improvement being upgrades comfort amenities. The back 9 lacks the soul and beauty of the front 9 but detracts very little overall from the experience.

Pleasantly Surprised! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 26, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

We had a lot of fun playing this course on vacation! The designers made up for the lack of extreme elevation with many interesting disc paths. One basket was elevated on a brick block which was neat to see. I enjoy the break on holes #10 and #11. Those holes play in the open, satisfying players who feel the need to rip one or two open shots. There were benches/chairs on about every hole. Most tees were large concrete slabs. The course is in a beautiful, clean park. There are many other things to do in this park, including baseball, tennis, basketball, soccer, and a playground for the kids. Blue trash cans were scattered throughout the course. The tee signs were very well done. They showed a detailed course map with the hole number, par, and distance. We were the only ones on the course(Played around sunset).

Cons:

The course could use better signage, but most of it was straightforward. #18 ends so far from #1, it's about a 5 minute walk back. Didn't see any snakes, nor did we have problems with bugs. I'm sure that could change depending on when you play.

Other Thoughts:

I came into this course with low expectations. I know that it can be tough to design a course in South Carolina because of the flat terrain, but the designers did an outstanding job. I truly had a great time playing here, and I would recommend it to anyone vacationing in the Myrtle Beach area.Happy discing!

Beautiful Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent course in a park setting. Course does not interfere with other activities.

Every hole had a tee sign with a map of the hole and distance.

Most holes had multiple tee pads. The ones that didn't, really didn't need them.

The tee pads are concrete and huge!

Very nice, well kept blue baskets, that are always visable when you get within 100 feet.

Great mix of hole types and distances. There was one hole that was over 800 ft. By far the longest hole I have ever played. The first hole was aceable, which I love because I've played too many courses that have 500+ ft holes that kill you right out of the gate.

Cons:

NOTHING, NADA, ZIP, ZILCH

Other Thoughts:

I am on vacation with my family. I visited this course all the way from Kalamazoo, MI. Around there we have 12 courses within 20 minutes. I was quite surprised that this was the only 18 hole coarse around. This course would fit in well with the top five courses up there. I really wish it was closer to home.

Beast at the Beach! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course. Tons of variety. I played after rain so the course was swampy but I'm leaving that out completely. The front nine was well laid out. I played the blue pads and there were straight shots and shots with specific lines required but I thought the holes were challenging and fun. I was really enjoying myself and then came the back nine. 10-12 started out really nice. more open and stretched out than the front then this course went from good to beast in a hurry. The final 6 holes are a true test of your DG game. Theres fairways but you've really got to hit your lines to get through this section at par. There are elevated baskets, twisting fairways and tons of trouble on both sides.

Cons:

None-Top notch legit DG course. Loved it.

Other Thoughts:

For a new course this is very polished. The local club or parks dept. has put a ton of work into making this a challenging and fun course. I cant wait to get back!

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great accuracy course. Distances seemed to match how tight each hole was. Perfect concrete pads and pretty good signage. Minor elevation changes. Dont remeber much trash at all, the park seemed very well kept. The par was something like 63. There were definitely 3 par 5s and some par 4s. So this course is beefy, good all around test of your golf game.

Cons:

Only thing that would boost this course rating higher is if there were some water or real elevation change

Other Thoughts:

Pro level course very much worth playing. Or driving a few hours to get to and spend the day.

Solid and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A challenging mix of short tight holes, to defined fairway par 4's and 5's, to placement par 4's, with a sprinkling of moderately open shots. This course makes you play disc golf like you are supposed to. You have to throw straight when you have to, you have to know how to scramble out of the woods on a bad shot, you must have a flex shot to get a birdie, I used flicks, hyzer flips, rollers, thumbers, and flex shots. The tee pads of crushed gravel are more preferable for me because it allows me to turn my foot easier which makes it easier on my knee when I throw backhand. I played right before a tournament, so signs were up for distances, hole numbers, and next tee: navigation was easy. Some short tees were in place--looked like more might be on the way. Didn't look like anyone used the "nature trail" that winds around near a few holes on the front 9-- so the course is exclusive to DG.

Cons:

I played in cold weather, but I could see a bug problem emerging in the warmer months. Standing water can be a problem both for playing/walking around it and for mosquitos. Sure there could be some benches on some more holes but the only time a sit down when I play is during a tournament, and even then I don't like to sit much--might be a drawback for some. Not a good course to bring your girlfriend/wife/kid/first-timer: not too beginner friendly--some true par 4's and 5's. They still might have fun though. I could see how this course could be a haven for snakes when it gets warmer if the course is not maintained--high patches of grass. Like I said, I played in the winter when the fairways were clear of grass/weeds, it might be different come May.

Other Thoughts:

Not too familiar with how safe the neighborhood is, but appeared be in a typical middle class area to me. RC track onsite with playground basketball courts could be a plus. Navigating and patiently waiting in MB traffic will test you. Most of the course feels isolated which I love. The junky boat on the side of hole #5 fairway could be fixed up, painted and utilized as a fun ornamentation for the hole--or just get rid of it. I imagine when the leaves come in, the course will get tighter but this course is definitely worth your time.
