Go Where the Locals Go. Play Where the Locals Play. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Myrtle Beach is the mini-golf capital of the world. It's also home to plenty of golf courses. Skip them all and enjoy Myrtle Beach's best layout.
- I was surprised how good this course is compared to its rating. Doing a bit of digging, the majority of low reviews were from the course's infancy. Based on some of those now-outdated reviews, this course has gone under many improvements. If you take away the low ratings (2.0 and under) from '12 - '14, the course's rating is at 3.44 (42 reviews) vs 3.09 (50 reviews). That seems to be a more accurate reflection of the course.
- Lots of good wooded holes, ranging from extremely generous fairways to tight lines (#1, 12, 18). Coming from Charlotte, these fairways were a walk in the park.
- Clever designs throughout. I really enjoyed the back and forth layouts of #5 & 6 (298 & 243 feet respectively), the tucked away basket on #10, the tight tee shot on #11, the raised basket on #14, and #16. The creativity backfired in two spots. More on that in the cons.
- There's a long and short layout. Some holes only have one tee. Overall, the short layout plays almost 600 feet shorter over the course of the round.
- I like the colorful baskets. Very beachy feel.
- Relatively good navigation. Signage is generally solid, with only two spots where better markers were needed (#11 basket / transition to #12 tee & #16/17 basket/tee areas).
- You do not need a big arm here to shoot well. On #14, for example, it's a 526-foot s-curve par 4. I threw two mid-range shots, kept the disc in the fairway, and had a long birdie putt/tap-in par 4. I'd rather do that than throw 375, end up deep in the woods, and have to hack my way out of the woods scrambling for par.
- That said, this course leans more towards the reward than risk side of things. For the most part, the rough is simple pine trees. The heavy tree lined fairways actually serve as a barrier, as you're more likely to get a disc knocked down at the edge of the fairway than sail deep into the woods. My only bad skip was in a sparse tree-lined rough so the bad skip off the tree had room to sail deep into the woods.
- There is now a #19th hole. It's one of the simpler/more enjoyable shots as you can carve your shot around trees to the basket. Plus it breaks up the long walk back to the parking lot.
- Course has good variety throughout. From the long tees, there are 5 holes 240 feet or less, 5 holes between 241 - 399 feet, 4 between 400 - 499, and 4 500-feet or longer. This gives players the chance to throw anything from putter to fairway driver to driver off the tee.

Cons:

Mosquitoes. They were bad. One of the worst on a course I've seen. I read about it beforehand and still forgot my bug spray. They weren't as bad the further you went on the course, back 9 especially wasn't an issue. I'm just glad I had long sleeves on when I played.
- Confusing aspects of the layout. It didn't seem there was consistency about which baskets were in play (A or B pin positions). Some holes seemingly had baskets in positions not listed on the tee sign - I'm looking directly at you #16.
- Speaking of #16, I hated this raised basket. Having elevated baskets on two of three holes (#14 & 16) takes away from them. This one seemed much more of a gimmick, probably because it came second. At the end of a 826-foot hole, you don't need a raised basket.
- The worst, absolute worst, no doubt about it, layout on the course is #13. The course takes a 90-degree turn about 1/3 of the way down the fairway. I don't understand the appeal or what the designer was going for other than forcing a putter/midrange off the tee or a high sweeping shot to cut the corner. Its's a gimmick that fails. If I were a regular, I'd take my 4 on the hole while holding my nose the entire layout.
- There's a fence running the entire right side of #2. After a short, basic #1, were you to throw over the fence, you may be hating this course just two holes in.
- Out-of-staters. Based on reading reviews, this is a drive-by course for tourists. The complaints about the wooded layout seem to be mostly from people playing here on vacation. Get a taste of Carolina disc golf.

Other Thoughts:

- Overall, a high quality course. Socastee is an easy 3.5 in my book. It's much closer to a 4.0 rating than a 3.0.
- This course is a doppelganger for Kilborne in Charlotte. The wood layouts, flow, and design and holes overlapped in their design.
- I didn't see any of the issues with a lack of parking or other activities taking away from the quality of the course. I don't know how often the track is in use. Shoot, I didn't realize it was a track until looking at the aerials after my round.
- The front 9 is the tighter, more technical side. The back 9 opens up with the longer holes. You can see that in the scorecard: 2700 feet for the front 9, 4100 feet for the back 9.
- I didn't have a problem with #18's layout. It's another hole where I threw a midrange disc off the tee 250 - 275 feet, kept it in the fairway, and ended up with a tap-in 4 for par. You can't swing for the fences on every single tee.
- I've never been a fan of Myrtle Beach. It's such a tourist trap for a certain swath of society. I think if you live in Ohio, you're required to visit here with the family over Spring Break. I've lived in Charlotte for more than three decades and this was only my third or fourth time here. I was in town just long enough to bag a couple courses before leaving. Seeing the quality of this course, I now have a singular good reason to visit.

Best Course at the Beach 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Variety. Hard to do with no elevation, but they did it. Each hole was a distinct challenge.

Challenge. Not any real "poke and pray" holes, but every hole held some challenge. Hit your line, and you're good. Miss that line, and you're in the mess. Errant shots will cost you a stroke on most holes.

Convenience. NOT too far from the beach, but far enough away that you don't see the tourists. Not hard to get to when you're on vacation, and a VERY welcome change of pace from mini golf and swimming.

Elevated baskets. Not too many of them, and one is JUST elevated enough for you to hit the cage if you aren't careful. But enough of them that they become gimmicky or old hat.

16 is a hole I expected to hate, but actually enjoyed. It's the most wide open of any hole on the course, and is the longest on the course. Captain noodle-arm here actually managed a par, so the rest of you should think of it as an impressive birdie opportunity.

Cons:

I can't think of much I'd list as true cons here. I really didn't like 18, but that was just because I have trouble throwing straight. I ended up throwing 4 putters to get close enough for par, and then missed an easy putt. 18 IS, however, a very unforgiving hole, with trouble on both sides of the fairway.

The course could use some new tee signs, and a map (either something you can pick up at the beginning of the course or something you could print out here at DGCR).

Other Thoughts:

Bug spray should be a no brainer for any course in this area, so don't forget it or you'll regret it. There is no map of the course, but the holes are pretty easy to navigate -- when in doubt, follow the worn-in paths.

The bar was set kind of low, with Loris, Coastal Carolina, and Tupelo Bay being the only other courses in the area. But Socastee is the best around, and would be competitive for that title in many other areas of the country. If you vacation in Myrtle Beach and miss this course, you missed out on a fun morning of disc golf.

Great Course for all Levels 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 20, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Played this course on vacation this morning and it was an excellent experience!

-The cement tee-boxes were in great condition and provided some excellent grip for driving the disc. Some holes had multiple tee-boxes for additional difficulty if desired.
-The baskets were practically new and had crisp blue paint to guide you through the course.

-The navigation was pretty seamless. Most of the holes had a visual representation of the hole layout and there were only a few holes that did not have such a visual aid.

I really liked the diversity in length. An excellent mixture of par 3's, 4's and 5's. I felt like each hole offered an individual feel. At some courses I feel like some of the hole layout can be quite repetitive. You will not find that here.

I started at 7:15am and the park was open. So, for the summer time at least, it appeared to be open from sunrise to sunset.

Cons:

I didn't see any snakes, but the sign at the beginning of the course certainly kept me on my toes. There was not much in terms of elevation, but I do not have too many cons.

As I mentioned above, a few of the holes did not have a visual representation of the hole layout but that was few and far between.

Other Thoughts:

Bring some bug spray for the bugs and you will be fine.

A Hot Challenging Mess 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

trees, we like trees, you got lots of tree
Open long fairways, we like em, you got em
Dog- lefts and dog-rights plenty of both and not a lot of repetition
Lots of hole variety, baskets all in excellent shape, great basket placements, easy walking, and easy directions to next hole
Plenty of shade - your in the woods a lot but the back open up briefly before you head back in
June has been extremely hot this year so we were pouring by hole 3 but like I said plenty of shade and benches to rest on each hole

Cons:

some very narrow fairways but this doesn't necessarily mean it is a con - it was for most of our group of 6 as half were first timers
Minor inconveniences = not all the course maps were posted at the start, no scorecard or map at the office, no water fountains or bathroom near the first hole or anywhere on the course -bring water or other beverages
Woods can be thick in places with lots of pine straw so check for buried discs

Other Thoughts:

we were on vacation down from va beach and it was awesome to find an 18 hole challenging course close to our cottage

Bonus - found a lost disc and didn't lose one

If you are vacationing near and play take an opportunity to check it out

Cons:

None to say. Still a work on progress and coming along great.

Almost There (Stay on Target) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm not a local, but, I'd like to welcome legit disc golf to the Myrtle Beach area.

- Design: I found this to be an interesting, well thought out track. Front 9 is short, technical, requiring placement over heroics. The back 9 features a few holes that have some more open lines/options off the tee, and some chances to air it out with drivers. The only design element really lacking is elevation changes--to be expected from a low country course. Generally speaking, you're going to need to play golf rather than murder this layout with power. As such, even though it's a challenging, blue level course, you don't need 450 ft drives to score. Considering it's a multi-use park, only on 18 is there any chance at all of throwing into other park goers. I found the fun-factor to be pretty high.

--Difficulty: It's a challenging course, but I felt like the difficulty level was very consistent throughout, for the most part. The really tight lines on the front were shorter holes, and parred such that you can take the holes one bite at a time. The longer stuff on the back nine had fairly generous lines.

- Navigation: judging from earlier reviews, I'd say there's been vast improvement here. Both the basket locations/fairways, and transitions between holes were intuitive, and playing it blind with no course map or tee signs was no problem. I had to recon a number of pole locations, but the baskets were generally right where they seemed like they should be, and I had almost no problem finding the next tees. All the pads were numbered.

- Drainage: always a concern with low country courses, it seems like this is not much of a problem. I played it the morning after a heavy, I'm talking monsoon-type rain. There was some standing water in spots, some from the heavy equipment used for cutting, but it was pretty dry, considering. Ironically, the roughness due to recent cutting/chipping was like mulch, and may have helped some of the damp spots.

- New blue Discatchers, practice basket right by first tee and entrance to park.

- The Park: ...is pretty awesome. Playground, basketball, tennis, "beach" volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, even a little BMX track for the kids, vending machine(s). No reason why the whole fam damly can't have a blast out there. Pretty easy to get to from Myrtle, Garden City, etc.

- Isolation: Given a large multi-use park, the course is almost totally isolated, with a nature trail feel. I think I was the only player on the course. I heard some chainsaws going, so maybe the designer/club guys were working out there, but I didn't come across them, which is too bad since they need a high five for this gem in progress.

Cons:

Some of these are to be expected, and I don't ding my rating for all of these, but the player needs to know...

I don't remember any trash cans on the course, and while there's no benches, there are a few holes with improvised seating, camp chairs, one car seat. For me, fine for now, it wasn't brutally hot/humid, and it's flat. I don't doubt this will be handled in due time.

Tee pads: I'm sort of 50-50 on them. They're framed and filled with crushed gravel/aggregate. There are only a few tee shots where I really missed concrete, and for me maintenance of these type of pads is the big concern...the designers/local dudes could check out what they have at Grand Central Station in the upstate to improve consistent footing, as an alternative to pouring crete, though my suspicion is that concrete pads will happen eventually...?

--Signage: again, no doubt tee signs/hole maps likely in the plans. Each tee is clearly numbered, and even without next tee signs, I had no trouble navigating. Recent rerouting seems to have occurred, since 8 plays to a basket numbered 9, and vice versa, which messed me up for a minute, but its so obvious how its supposed to flow, it was a minor ding.

--Growing pains. It's a new course, and some of the holes have been recently cut, and it shows. Bit rough around the edges, so to speak. I'm used to it, and it didn't detract from my enjoyment, my suggestion is, do the folks a solid, and toss some sticks etc off the fairway around your lie(s). Those of not so certain footing will have some tripping issues until this course gets some traffic.

--"Wildlife": earlier reviews mentioned snakes, I saw none, but the skeeters were pretty rampant. It's the low country. Bring your favorite bug spray.

-- Holes 1-3 are problematic. 1's not rancid, but it's just too short for the course, bit of a par 2 type deal. 2 has the possibility of either playing into 3 tee, or missing right, over a fence into the road. Not much traffic, it ends at the park entrance, but you'll have to hop it, meaning the fence, or double back and go around if you shank right. In say a tourney situation, 3's tee will be in a danger zone from 2's tee.

--I suppose the argument could be made that, for the first legit 18 hole course in the area, this course is "too tough". It's right where I'm at, so to speak, but not really beginner friendly.

--Repetitive?: For some, the front side may seem so. I found the shot requirements to be subtly different from hole to hole, but I didn't pull out any drivers until 10 I don't think. i like having to "play golf" like that, but I suppose, again, that this argument could be made at this point.

--for the front 9 especially, I'm guessing that there will always be debates about leaving vs removing this tree or that. It's the age old thing. What one player finds fair, the next may find gimmicky. I come from a town that has a lot of courses like this one, so I had no beef, but expect to hit a tree now and then even on very good shots.

--Lost precious potential: new course, the rough is rough, especially on the back 9. There are spots where I was reluctant to go in after errant throws. I came away with the bag intact...barely.

--Standing water: Though far better than I anticipated, there were some spots where big puddles were a bit of an issue, and I suspect that with the rain the area will inevitably get, that this could be a bummer for the less adventurous/high-polish junkies.

Other Thoughts:

My extended family takes a big beach vacation every year, and it moves around periodically to accommodate everyone's travel. When this year's was to Garden City, I was at first a bit distraught, knowing that, though the area is renowned as a ball golf destination, there hasn't been great discing here...then I saw this course on this website. The early reviews were consistent with a brand new course with basically just the baskets in the ground, so I was hesitant to try it, and only got out there the last full day I was in town...my only regret.

I started playing 3 yrs ago, in Charlotte, just as CDGC was getting ready for worlds. So, I'm used to "diamonds in the rough" courses that have the new course issues. For me, Socastee has some tweaking left to do, but is entirely playable, offers good variety, and is a blast to get around. If you require "finished" to enjoy a round, may want to give the locals time to get there, but IMO, you're missing out if you settle for only a round or two at Tupelo Bay. This is no doubt a championship caliber course in the making. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor, suck it up w/r/t the work in progress aspect, and give this track a go.

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

All holes now have crushed gravel tee boxes.
Though wooded, there are nice throwing lanes on most holes. (ignore earlier complaints about too many trees. It's obvious that heavy equipment was brought in to remove trees and brush)
Course has fun layout! Next time I'm in MB I will look forward to playing it and seeing the changes.

Cons:

It had rained the day we played it and the heavy equipment had left ruts which filled with water. First timers could still use some help finding the next tee box on some holes. Still quite a bit to trip on. Foot traffic will help to break down sticks and roots. Would love signage indicating where baskets are and the par on each hole.

Other Thoughts:

Many thanks to all those who are obviously working hard on this course! Although not there yet. It is moving toward becoming a challenging and fun course.

Pros:

The course is a good mix or long and short hole as well as open and wooded holes. The group of guys out there are putting a lot of work into the course and were working on the course when I showed up to play. They have formed up the tee boxes and hope to have them complete soon.

Cons:

The only thing I could think of is the course needs more foot traffic to help beat down some of the thick rough areas.

Other Thoughts:

This is a new course and a lot of work has already gone into it. I played the course 3 times over 2 days and really enjoyed it. I reviewed what others wrote about the course and was very disappointed in the low negative ratings giving. Its a brand NEW course what do you expect. I have played many many courses in NC, SC, TN, FL and TX and can see this course as a top course in the next couple of years. The group are working on tees, signs and the park seems very willing to allow the to do whatever they need. I recommend you go play this course and help to improve it
