Pros:
Pulling up to the course you will take the driveway leading up to the school and park in the first lot on your right . You will see 4 baskets right away. The baskets are in good condition , and there are several makeshift benches along the course , but you will not need them , primarily because you will likely be the only person playing . I was intrigued when I came over here because of the 3 rating . The course kind of triangles the first 3 holes , splits off to a throw across the road to a basket that sits in front of a large hole , then wanders around to the back of the school and circles the school to the front lawn behind where you parked . The grass is mowed for 1-3 and 6 ,7 ,& 9 . I am glad that high schools are spurring interest in disc golf . #1 is an fun long downhill throw to a hidden basket behind some high growing plants . #2 has a tee on your right & in front of a small bench . it's a level drive with a fence line that comes into play if an errant throw goes to your far left and a protective fence behind it . #3 is a 600+' drive uphill to where you parked . No real obstruction on the first holes. #4 is on the right from where you parked ( print the map ) . and is wide open , protected in the front by a large crater . #6 is next to a fence that throws out over part of the field events section of the high school track program . #7 is a more level throw from driveway to the back part of the school . #8 is a throw to the side of the hill and #9 is a hole that is a blind throw wrapping around the school and protected by a row of smaller trees . That's about all for the description of the holes and the pluses .
Cons:
Where do I start ? I guess you could say they have dual tees since they marked spots on the parking lots and driveways where you tee off . The only clever use of a hole was #1 . I never found #5 , don't know if it exists . #s 6 & 7 are pretty bland , the only obstruction is throwing around a temporary throwing cage in the field events area of 6 . I never found the #8 tee but was glad I didn't , because the blind throw would put you on a hill that hasn't been cleared of weeds for at least a year . There were weeds that have grown up into the basket , No excuse for that . It only shows that no one has played this course for a long while . The throw on #9 could cause you to hit an unsuspecting car that might drive around the building . Where is the old high school pride ? Doesn't South Point have detention , where some of the kids can work off their punishment by clearing off that hillside , building a tee pad for 8 or FINDING HOLE 5 ? This is a course that started as a good idea , then was forgotten .
Other Thoughts:
I do praise a school in principle ( get it ? ) for encouraging the kids to get out , take up an outdoor activity and air out some good old discs at the school , even competing against a rival school for bragging rights . Some of what I said may have been accomplished at some point in time after the making of this course . But there is no design , nothing to keep the interest of the locals , the city or even the school as evidenced in the upkeep of the course . The school itself looks nice and the grounds have been well taken care of , so it does not have to do with poor custodial attention . I cannot give this better than a 1 . Maybe some time I will revisit this course when I come down to play Armco Park and see if improvements = a higher score , but until then , GO , GO , GO away from this course .
