This is an awesome course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has four different course all in one. It ranges from easy to really hard. Its possible to get a hole in one on.

Cons:

There is a lot vegetation, which makes it easy to loose discs if your not careful. There is a lot of people who play it so it can be slow to play.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of my favorite course i have played in Iowa. The course makes you choose your shot carefully.

Pretty Solid 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course sports two pins and two tees on most holes. Every hole has except 2 of them have at least one or the other. It may not matter as much to a visitor but this keeps the course interesting for locals who play it a lot.

The course is much less frequently used by the college recreational players, making it not nearly as crowded and allowing groups to play more and wait less.

The course will test you for all different types of shots. Between different sets of tees and baskets you will see FH, BH, long bombs, short drives, tunnel shots, turnovers, etc. Many holes allow you to take different lines to the basket based on your risk/reward comfort level. Most of the long holes still require control on your drives as well.

There is a practice basket tucked off to the right of hole one behind eighteen's long pin.

Cons:

While it does provide variety, it definitely favors RHFH and LHBH over all.

If there is a lot of rain the river can come up and swallow a couple holes, occasionally leaving some tees buried in sand/dirt.

Elevation...it is almost nonexistent here.

Other Thoughts:

There is a pretty wide variety of holes to play. The front nine is mostly tighter fairways with trees to negotiate. The back nine opens and lengthens up, but there are still several old growth trees to bring a challenge.

Construction is done as of now, and the broken basket was replaced.

This course definitely brings a harder challenge than the other course in Ames.

ISU 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multiple tees and multiple pins make this course great for miss matching rounds for any level of player. Good variety of short and longs and challenges to BH, FH, OH players. Lots of mature trees and other plant-life to play around or through. Good signage for tees. Tucked away and more discouraging to rec. players rounds move faster because of less traffic than Carroll Marty (the other Ames course.) Close to ISU's campus.

Cons:

During heavy to moderate rain the course becomes a bit swampy. During spring and summer the course plant-life gets a little out of control. More elevation change would be nice.

Other Thoughts:

Great course for a challenge especially from long to long tee. Makes great use of the land. Good course to make you think about and execute your shots. And unlike prior reviews the basket on #17 has been fixed.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course offers several different tees and pins at nearly every single hole. This makes playing the course time after time again a new experience with new challenges and obstacles. The flow of the holes is pretty well laid out but a few of them are a little harder to find if this is your first time playing the course. Also the location is just past the railroad tracks in Ames making it fairly close for college students to come play in their spare time,

Cons:

The layout of the course is overall pretty flat. The few elevation changes that are there are not very drastic allowing for most of the holes to have straight shots in at the pin areas. Also another complaint is the construction that is going on next to the last 2 holes of the course. The 17th basket is completely bent up and can not be shot into because a truck ran over it and it had not been replaced in a while according to a friend that has played here for a few years, Hole 18 is a swamp with standing water and mud due to all the construction so bring an old pair of shoes if you want to play this course. Overall pretty fun but I have played much more challenging courses.

great challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

2 tees and pins on most holes creates a great variety of ways to play the course. Lots of trees and options on shots. Tight and technical front nine, longer and more open back nine. However, still plenty of obstacles on the back nine to make you think about your shots. Almost no waiting compared to the other course in town.

Cons:

Not much elevation change at all. A lot of trees can create a very frustrating day if your having bad luck. The course gets really overgrown in the late summer/fall and it can become difficult to find your disc if it goes off the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

The more disc golf I play, the more I like this course. When I played this course last year i really did not like it because it was just too difficult for me. But now I am much better and enjoy the challenge. Don't give up on the course after you play it just once or twice. Try a few different tee/pin combos and find what is right for you.

Not so good anymore 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has multiple basket and tee pads so you can mix and match a round however you want.

Cons:

After the redesign of the course, it is no longer that great of a course.

Other Thoughts:

I would skip this one and head over to Gateway Hills.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 18, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multiple tees and multiple (permanent) targets on most holes. Fairly good balance of shot shapes. A good variety of short finesse holes and a couple of true par 4 holes. Flows well. Lots of trees. Looping 9's. Ample parking for events. Descriptive signage. Message board at entrance.

Cons:

A bit flat. Slightly favors the left handed player. A few tees are buried by dirt after it rains. Signs are showing age from light vandalism and flood damage.

Other Thoughts:

One of the two courses that serve Ames and ISU in particular, this is the course that will appeal to the more "serious" player. While the Red-Red course distance is geared to the novice player, there are still a lot of tree obstacles to knock down your throw.

With dual tees and dual baskets on most of the holes, the course can be played in 4 different configurations. The course was updated with new basket locations recently, adding length and difficulty to many of the holes. Two holes play to a par 4 for the average pro player. #16 is the signature hole, playing 606' from the gold tee to the gold target and was regarded as one of the best holes played during the 2004 World Championships.

Pros:

Super challenging and tight. No truely "open" hole. There are two pin placements up year round. Thats right theres the red baskets and the silver baskets. Am pads and Pro pads are very different shots. Accuracy a must. Long and short holes. Easy to navigate and great signs. Although relatively flat, use of the land was maximized. Tunnel shots common.

Other Thoughts:

I've recently learned that the course has been altered. So my review is of its Worlds design.
