I wish more courses were like Stafford Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 7, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Decent Parking and had Porta-Potty
- Both times I played was on a weekend and there were disc vendors set up near Hole 1.
- Course is immaculately maintained and the high traffic volume makes for clear paths and fairways
- Stone paver/tile tee pads are excellent. Practical and they look good.
- Architecture and landscaping on some holes (6,7,15) is world class for a free to play course.
- Across the pond shots on 3 and 7 are very fun and rewarding. There even is a retrieval pole if you get unlucky.
- For being such a popular course in a high population the laurel trees on the property keep you isolated from other golfers and the surrounding community.
- Multiple Tees and baskets are always a big plus.
- Course flows nicely from one hole to the other. There are no hikes to get to the next tee but no holes feel like filler either
- Signage is great and the fluorescent next Tee are even better. If you get lost on this course then you are having too good of a time.

Cons:

- On a course this fun and accessible back ups are going to happen. I do not know how this can be changed but getting stuck behind a group that won't let you play through is always a bad time
- There were a number of holes where the shot required is decided for you before you even step onto the tee pad.
- Both times I played here I have dealt with walkers wandering off the Stafford Trail and ending up on a fairway. Not that big of a deal but mentionable none the less.
- The parking lot is interesting as it basically is just a tight area under some trees that gets filled up with cars. There are no clear rows or lanes. I have always done a walk around my car expecting to see bumps and scratches before leaving.

Other Thoughts:

I wish my local courses had as nice landscaping and architecture as Stafford Woods. I played here recently on the way home from a trip to Maple Hill and it is not that much of a stretch to say that the tee pads and greens at Stafford were on par with that legendary course. A favorite hole of mine at Stafford is hole #4. The fairway on hole 4 is textured with these interesting grass mounds that give it the feel of a ball golf course while approaching the basket through a wall of guardian trees maintains that classic disc golf feel. When I first played this course I was still a beginner and was frustrated by the technical wooded fairways. After my second trip here a couple years later I was able to better appreciate just how much work went into making this course so beautiful. And its free to play! Ain't disc golf great??

Top Course In New Jersey For A Reason 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Stafford Woods Disc Golf Course is located immediately off of Eversham Rd . I had to drive by and turn around , as the drivers here want to tailgate , and this course parking lot is almost a hidden entrance . The parking lot is plenty big and gravel . Drive slow . There are 2 Port O Lets near the lot . This is an 18 hole course .
The Equipment - There are 2 tee pads per hole The tee pads are Pavers and plenty large .for run-ups ( up to 12' for the long tees ) . . The signage is very good , giving all necessary information and flight paths . There are also lots of Next Tee signs to keep you moving from basket to tee without wandering . The baskets are nice numbered Chainstars that catch well . There are reddish strands protruding from the ground that mark the area considered the Green .
The Landscape - The course was mowed , and branches trimmed when I was here . The course was very clean . The course has a little elevation , but not a lot . The course is mostly woods , but it does dart out of it and allows some bomber holes ( 5 , 15 , 16 ) . There is a water carry on #7 , elevated baskets , . A nice cement tee box is at hole #15 , A fairway that descends at the end to the basket . The rough lets you know it's there . There are plenty of trees to twist and turn your drives . A couple of gullys and raised tee pads round out the topography .
The Amenities - There are 2 putting baskets near the front of the course . Plenty of trash cans keep the course clean . There are benches everywhere , many are cool marble/rock benches and others are logs .There are wood chips to soak up the water on some of the dirt fairways .A disc lost and found is up near the front of the course . Make sure you are putting your name and phone number on your discs . There is a down-home covered chill area between the #18 basket and the parking lot .
The Highlights - This course will empty your disc bag before you finish . Fun yet challenging holes at every turn .There are alternate tee positions on most of the holes . #3 is a pond throw to an elevated tee on a hill . #5 has split fairways , one going to the left 564' & into the woods , and the other going to the right and a more open 390' . #6 goes slightly downhill with rough on the right and left , to the basket on a pyramid hill protected by fairway trees . #7 ( 192', 300' ) throws over a pond to an slightly elevated basket . #11 might be the most challenging hole . It is a par 5 ( . 616' , 775' ) that has an S fairway . There is a small gully 2/3 of the way to the hole The fairway is fair but tree lined and tight . Expect to hit a tree ,,, or three . #15 is a drive that shoots out of the woods ( 691', 831' ) and slightly slopes downhill most of the way . The basket is tucked low & into the left and behind some trees . There is a nice green area encased by what looked like a backyard garden structure ( looked great ) . #16 goes slightly back up the slope to a hanging basket . #17 throws from an elevated tee ( 362' , 520' ) into a tightening fairway The basket is on the right ,in a tight tree-protected small green ) .
The Time - The course will likely be crowded when you play . Plan on being here a while . I came here right after a tournament had just ended . Playing from mostly longs , it took me an hour and twenty five minutes . A group of 4 might finish in 2 1/2 hours . or a little less .
Beauty - This course isn't postcard-worthy , but still is very nice looking . You can tell that the locals are serious about upkeep to make it that much better to look at .
I am told that this course has been ever improving since opening in 2012 . The course sits on what was considered much of a dumpsite before then . Although getting some blow-back from the city ( I am emailing then after I finish reviewing ! ) , the course volunteers keep trudging on enhancing the disc golf experience here .
The course is free and run by volunteers . A donation box near the beginning of the course might help defray costs for upkeep of the course .

Cons:

Nothing big in cons .
Disc Risk - Medium + Some high growth on the outer fairway edges and pond carries are possible disk gobblers . Don't take risks with your prize driver . If you aren't carrying a found " water or Risk Disc " , don't ruin your day with a plastic loss , especially on the early holes .
Foot traffic from nearby houses may wander onto the course . Be patient and share . A hit walker might lead to an angry call to City Hall ( not needed )
I will NOT count off my score for the parking lot or dangerous entry into it .

Other Thoughts:

There is a reason that this is the top course in New Jersey . Challenging ( good mix of right and left handed holes ) , but still enjoyable . Fun Factor Galore here . Stafford Woods goes the extra mile to make your round an Experience . I had just played Greystone Woods , which is the 2nd highest rated course in the state , and Stafford shines above it .I am glad your course is free . I work 8 miles from Idlewild ( currently #6 top rated in the world ) and it's free , too , but I think it's not too outrageous to set up a donation box in case travelers like me want to throw in a 5 or so into the upkeep .I had the privilege to sit with a lot of those volunteers after my round . They are a great group and make everyone feel welcome . Thank You to all of them , and South Jersey Disc Golf for letting me play on your course . Even though I have over 300 reviews written ( not posted , yet ) , I had problems rating this course . It was around a 4.25 , but I couldn't find anything to count off much for , and had to round up . I have played many great courses in the last 6 days ( Smugglers Notch- Brester Ridge , Augusta - Ghost Tree , Sabattus Disc Golf , Woods at Beauty Hill- Lynx , Maple Hill , This course is in the conversation with them .
My Recommendation - This would be what I call a Destination Course . A little intimidating for families , dates , intros or newbies , the shorter tees might smooth some of that out . Locals will be honored to call this their Home Course . Intermediates on up will be challenged and love it here . Travelers should stop . It plays long , but it's a short drive off of I-295 and you won't ever forget the course Course Collectors will like the easy access , and the fact that it's one of the better courses they will ever play . ( this course goes right into my favorites list ) . Now , excuse me , I have an email to send to the city of Vorhees . In the meantime ,
PLAY THIS COURSE !!!!!

Stafford Woods DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 13, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-great course design, with fairly straightforward navigation
-level paver tee pads & newer baskets
-challenging but fair terrain; again, the designers used the topography well in laying out the holes
-excellent signage, which made navigation simpler
-great locals who were friendly & helpful during my visit
-overall a top level course for players of all ability levels

Cons:

-nothing to complain about; played the course this evening for the first time and was very impressed!

Other Thoughts:

Had the chance to play Stafford Woods after dinner tonight, and had a throughly enjoyable round. Had no problem finding the course, and once there was impressed by how well appointed it is. Outstanding signs made navigation easy, the tee pads were great, holes are thoughtfully designed to challenge every player, it was clean...in many ways, it was one of the best courses I've ever played. Really glad I had the chance to get a round in here, it certainly deserves its reputation as one of NJs best!

Fantastic course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

I absolutely love this course. Despite it being only 50 minutes from my house, it somehow went unnoticed on my course radar. Stafford Woods is by far one of the best courses in the region. It is well designed and nicely laid out, taking full advantage of all the natural topography available within the park. The majority of the course is in the woods, but a number of holes are in the wide open fields for some fun power throws.
The multiple pin placements and tee pads make for a wide range of difficulty on each hole.
The holes that are in the woods are all fair, with at least one line to the pin. Every fairway is wide enough for the average disc golfer to hit, but not so wide that it's an "easy" shot. Good shots are rewarded, bad shots punished. Getting off the fairway isn't a death sentence, as the overgrowth isn't bad at all and as a result, a good scramble game will still get you up and down for par.
The open field holes make good use of OB stakes to add a challenge to what would otherwise be a simple grip-it-and-rip-it shot. The fairways are relatively narrow, forcing you to make the proper disc selection based on wind and skill. Yet the fairways are more than wide enough to hit for any skill level.
Tee pads are excellent, providing good grip, and most are more than long enough for the run up needed for the length of the hole.
Multiple pin placements provide a variety of options for changing the hole and its difficulty. Many of the greens utilize a wonderful railroad tie design, making them not just challenging, but beautiful to behold.
Tee signs are very well done, and signage throughout the course leave little to no doubt as to where to go for the next hole.

Cons:

There is nothing negative for me to say about the course itself. It's awesome. However, it can be difficult to find a disc in the bed of leaves that were still present in early March.

Other Thoughts:

Stafford Woods is a top tier course and worthy of it's top rating for NJ and the US. If you're passing through the area, it's a MUST PLAY. If you're an avid disc golfer, it should absolutely go on your bucket list of courses to play before you die.

Must play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Course is well maintained with a sold mix of wooded holes and open holes.
- Lines are tight but fair.
- Teepads are awesome with multiple tees and locations.
- Good baskets and signage.

Cons:

- I normally don't like artificial OB, but there are only a few holes, and to be honest, it works well.

Other Thoughts:

Coming from the suburbs of philly, this course is quintessential east coast/PA golf. It is a must play if you're in the area. Right up there with Nocki and Tyler IMO but less strenuous on the legs.

Excellent Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good variety of shots and great use of trees and terrain. Tee pads are brick, well made. Multiple tees on most holes. They take great care of this course and its VERY hard to lose a disc.

Cons:

Hard to find the parking lot from hole 18 after the round. The parking lot could use some gravel or something, it was the most muddy part of the whole park. And some better signage to find hole 1 for people who are not familiar with the course would be a good addition.

Other Thoughts:

All in all it was a great course and was pleasantly surprised by how fun & easy this course was to play. It's probably not a great beginner course but it was perfect for me as an intermediate player.

Best Course in South Jersey 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent variety of Woods/Open Throws
Very fair fairways in the woods
Holes close together(for the most part)

This course is excellent for beginners as there are holes where you only have to worry about throwing it into the rough where you can easily get your disc. However, this course also has challenging holes for more experienced players with trees that require pin point accuracy. As a bipolar player myself I felt that whenever I threw into the super woodsy rough, it was all on me and had I thrown a good shot I would have landed in the fairway with no problem.

Cons:

Baskets can be hard to see since they don't have any bright markings on them like a yellow rim, for example. Also there were some tee pads that could be larger. 2 of them made me think that it was limiting for a full shot.

Other Thoughts:

You will have a great time here no matter what skill level you are. I played this course for the 1st time on the short tees and was able to get some pars and birdie's. It was certainly fun being able to see the gold tees for the pros because it really makes you aware of just how much farther than you they are throwing it. Anyone should try this course, even if you're not from the area. This course is certainly worth a long drive if you're looking for a good day of golf

Favorite course around 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 25, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Where do I start. It's all around one of the best layouts and design it's got holes that are all wooded and then they have two holes over the lake and then they even have open field holes and some holes that are woods and open field together. And it's got hills on some holes to for the ups and downs. This course just has it all. By far my favorite spot to play.

Cons:

Can't think of anything besides that there are just a couple of the short tees pads that aren't all the way complete yet but are being worked on and will be set in here in the near future. They are all in just redoing and making them better to just certify that

Other Thoughts:

And all the locals here are really nice and are also helpful. And even at times the guy that designed the course will even come out and shoot rounds with us. It's always a blast.

Tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a good variety of shots and will challenge you in many areas. It had nice tee pads, the baskets were in good condition, and tee signs that were big and easy to see from afar off. There were good path markers and the areas around the baskets and the tees were built up to make a level surface. The course was clean.

Cons:

The baskets were really difficult to see especially in the thick woods. The tee signs were incorrect on a couple holes. Hole 18 did not end anywhere near the parking lot and did not have markers to point us back to the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Too many tunnel shots.

Designer response by hawk12
thank you very much for your review. I do feel this is fairly accurate for the current conditions.

As we have made a few changes, some of the signs are not 100% accurate, and when the remaining changes, additional anchors, short tees, etc are complete we will update all the signage. Thank you for the point about the sign pointing to the parking area, the temp sign pointing to the parking area has gone missing and I'll add that to the list for future signage updating.

I expect quite a few of 'finishing touches' in the next 1-2 years....

Top ten course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Wide variety of very well thought out holes. Many holes that would be the signature hole on most courses. Meticulously maintained with phenomenal tees, benches and signage. Most holes have alternate tee and or pin placements. Always being upgraded and improved as the volunteers are never satisfied, and it their efforts truely show. Simply a joy and challenge to play regaurdless of your skill level. The type of course that makes you look forward to returning too as soon as you finish your round.

Cons:

There are not many. A few of the holes have tees that have yet to be upgraded to the highest caliber. Although there are porta potties a permenant restroom facilities with running water would be great. Although during tournaments there is a top notch pro shop available the course does not have a permanent manned pro shop/club house. The region is known for ticks and mosquitoes so bring your bug repellent.

the professional and tasteful man made improvements enhance and preserve the natural elements of the challenging greens.

Pure Joy 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 6, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-it's a beautiful course. very pretty lined fairways, the understory bushes(laurels?) in the woods bloom in late spring. It's like an east coast version of Golden Gate Park.
-for a long, challenging course it is also very much a fun course to play
-great signage and navigation, easy for first timers to figure out where to go and how to throw
-paver teepads are in great shape
-Decent variety of hole types (2 water carries, 5 out in the open, 11 in the woods) and elevation on about a third of the holes

Cons:

-the wooded holes can kind of blend in with each other, less because of the hole designs and ,ore just because the woods has such a consistent look from hole to hole so visually they all kind of look the same.
-while they have redone the parking lot entrance to widen it, the mulched parking lot itself still isn't great
-Baskets are hard to see. For wooded courses I really prefer powder coated baskets for better visibility

These are minor cons though. You generally don't leave a round at Stafford and have a lot of complaints.

Other Thoughts:

Highlights:
Hole 4 - Nice flex shot through a meadow with the fairway back in the woods
Hole 11 - Really nice par 5 on a winding fairway
Hole 14 - Hit the gap to get out of the woods and then a crush across a field to a sunken green with the pin nestled in a little terrace on the side of a steep slope. Perfection!
Hole 16 - This hole reminds of the children's story Ferdinand the Bull. With a hanging basket below a very impressive tree. It's a crush too at 545 ft slightly up hill.

Stafford is a great course and it's fun to play. It's worth a stop for anyone passing by and is a must visit for anyone within 1.5 hour drive.

South Jersey's Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 10, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is a great test of skill. You will know what parts of your game need work when you leave here. If your accuracy is off, you will know it. If you don't putt well, you will know it. If your driver game is lacking...well, you get the idea. There are short technical holes, long bomb holes, lefty holes, righty holes, wooded holes, open holes...it's all here. However, what I've found to be the greatest asset of the course is the core group of locals and club members. They are always there, always working on upgrades, and always friendly. The course is loved. And the crew loves to show everyone how great thier course is. You can always find a friendly local to play with if you want. If you want pointers, there are many qualified players you can get in touch with, who'd be glad to play a round with you. A truly great community of wonderful people.

Cons:

There are still to many random trees in the middle of the fairways. Hole 11 and 17, to be precise. They are already very narrow fairways. The removal of one or two strategic trees would define your shot line instead of hoping you can make your disc turn three or four times in one throw. On both of these holes it is the second shot I'm referring to, the tee shots are narrow and difficult but fair. The second shot....not so much. The parking lot is terrible. When the rain softens the ground, big mud holes open up. The county and the locals know it, and are working on it, but it's still bad. The lot is better, but still bad.
The lot has been upgraded! The main run in has gotten a coating of rock. Much better now.

Other Thoughts:

I credit this course for the recent improvements in my game. I'm no pro, but the time I've spent on this course has definitely taught me well. Sometimes the feedback a course gives you isn't what you want to hear...(usually after it kicks your a$$) But sometimes that's what gets you motivated to work on your weaknesses. That is what Stafford has done for me, and I'm glad it did.

A must play course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 8, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

5/8/16 was my first time playing, but definitely won't be my last. I finished the first round and immediately played a second 18. This course is definitely in my favorites, and has the potential to get even better. For a relatively new course, this 18 plays like a seasoned course; its obvious the club puts a lot of work into maintaining and improving..

When you first arrive, you'll notice a parking area off the street with portable bathroom and baskets. There are multiple practice baskets recessed in the woods on your way to hole 1! While I was there, locals from the club were selling new and used discs, which was great (btw they have a lot of new Trilogy plastic and a nice mix of used discs if that's what you're in to).

The next thing I noticed was how beautiful the wooded area is the course is in. There are multiple rustic hiking trails throughout the course that allow players to navigate the course. The course setting was enough to make it enjoyable.

most holes have multiple tee's and multiple baskets. Signage is good. You will still find challenge playing from the shorts if you don't have much time/daylight, but the longs make the holes even better; either adding length, changing approach angle to fairway, or increased technical shots with more trees.

The layout seemed to favor a RHBH player, but I found myself throwing some forehand shots. There is a nice mix of open and heavily wooded. There is also a nice mix of shorter holes 200'-350' vs 350'-500' when playing the short layout. There are a couple holes (e.g., 11, 15, 16) that you'll need to bomb.

Cons:

I recommend printing a map or playing with a local your first round. Even with the signage and "next tee" arrows, it is easy to second guess whether you are headed the right way or not.

Only major layout Con is that hole 18 finishes with a minor walk back to the lot. But the woods are so peaceful I didn't even care!

Not that its a big deal, but the "par" doesn't change when you are playing the short vs long tee position (at least from a signage perspective). I realize if its league or tournament, par doesn't much matter anyway. But there were some par 4's that would likely be a par 3 from the short tee.

I could see leaves in the fall being a problem with discs. Also, the entrance to the park sneaks up on you from the road. There is a small sign, but for a first-timer I almost missed it. The mulched parking lot was also very sogged/muddy lots of rain. Sounded like the locals were hoping for a stone lot in the future.

Other Thoughts:

I absolutely loved playing this course. If you are even remotely close to it, I recommend making the trip. The South Jersey DG folks were nice and have a facebook page that will give you some additional information.

great hidden gem 2+ years drive by

Pros:

I thought it was a great course when I started and it was 9 nice holes; but the back 9 really turned out great and added some shots with changes in elevation. Now it has everything I could want.

Cons:

Minor nitpick: the parking lot entrance could be widened and the parking lot gets rutted when muddy.

Other Thoughts:

I'm just a recreational "beginner" that gets out about once a month; but I consider myself very lucky to have Stafford woods be really close by/home course.

I've been bringing my son here since he was 2 and its a great spot where he can play in the "woods" and not get lost or hurt -- I throw my disc and he runs em down, finds them. Sometimes when he was younger we would come here just to walk the course for fun (and pick up any trash we might find). He follows and points out the "clues" (arrows and maps). This course is so well marked up and laid out that even a 4yr old couldn't fail to find every tee and basket. Now he's old enough to start throwing the disc a bit and I hope to get out here even more.

There was also a good balance of par 3's and par 4's, and a monster par 5 was also there! There were great baskets, new ones and the signage was great! The tee pads also had carpets on them on some holes for better footing, too. There were a lot of benches for resting after a long hole, and that was also a plus. There was good elevation, some were uphill, some downhill, and some straight. I LOVED hole 16, it was a 500 foot bomb and there was a hanging basket. It was a bit of a challenge because if you had a bad shot to the left, you could say bye to your disc (at least look for it first). There was a high rough on many holes to the left and right, but I thought it was good to have a little bit of a challenge. There were two water holes that weren't that hard, so I thought they were really fun because you had to go over water.

Cons:

There were a lot of people, but I don't blame them because Stafford is a course that is so nice. Other that, no cons. This course was the bomb!

Other Thoughts:

There are tournaments here so hopefully I can come to one, because this course was supreme!

One of the best in New Jersey 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 22, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course offeres almost everything you could want in a DG course. A few strategically placed walls would make it incredibly difficult but so much fun. It uses the little elevation available well but could use more. With that said, very well done.

Cons:

The course does have some danger spots with barbed wire so be careful. The parking lot needs to be improved. Also, for a newcomer, it could be a little challenging to navigate. I look forward to bigger tournaments here.

Other Thoughts:

South Jersey Disc Golf is doing an amazing job of growing the sport. New courses are popping up and existing ones are expanding. Keep an eye out for future pros out of New Jersey!

Heavily wooded yet open ? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

First time playing this course. Easy to miss, keep an eye out for the Stafford Woods Disc Golf sign !

Great course, very very wooded, yet open enough to drive a car around each hole, great mix of hyzer and anhyzer shots needed to play well. Two pretty cool water hazards that give some risk/reward points, I almost holed the 2nd water hole !

Plenty of longer holes to open up on, yet plenty of technical holes that challenge every part of the game.

Well kept, awesome signage, never once got lost, woods are very bare so tossing a disc off the beaten path turned out being very easy to find throughout all 18 holes

I can't wait to go back again with friends, two tee box options per hole. A+
2 practice baskets, port-o-potty near practice tees

Cons:

Not many, no course map posted (nice to take a photo of before playing), parking was very limited, i had to make my own spot vs driving thru a huge mud patch

Other Thoughts:

Great course, would love to come back soon.
