The Creek is Stoned 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Layout - A tale of two courses; it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

The front 9 is what I refer to as more city park style golf. It's mowed grass, sparse trees and multiple routes. Some holes gave you tighter direct options or wider routes going around. This area is more open and has some longer shots so you can get your drivers out. I really liked how the front mixed up the distances and shots to keep it interesting.

The back 9 is in the thicky icky. It's mostly tight technical fairways with trees scattered in. These holes offer less creativity and options; it's mostly hit this gap although a few holes offer multiple routes.

The few holes on the back that did offer multiple routes did give you some risk/reward. The easier gaps to hit made you work the disc more while the tighter gaps were more straight forward.

Up to three tee options (although only the middle tees had pads) that switched up the shot on occasion but usually just added more length.

There is one par 4 although I'd say it's more of a long par 3 if you are a blue level player up. Perhaps it should be par 3 from the blues, and par 4 from whites and reds.

Equipment - Only the White tees had pads. These were trapezoid concrete of decent size. Decent baskets including a practice basket by the parking lot. The holes do have signs listing the hole #.

Atmosphere - The front part is again more of a city park kind of area. There's a walking trail meandering through and it's a nice little area. The back is super thick jungle they've carved holes in to but it does give you more seclusion.

Cons:

Layout - The biggest drawback overall is that the course is mostly just kind of ho hum. There's no really intriguing holes or anything that sticks out. I think the nature of how the course flows add to this feeling.

If you could mix up the wooded/open holes a bit more it might spice it up a bit but you basically play nine open then nine wooded. The back nine doesn't have a ton of variance. The shots vary but most are shorter holes.

There's no real elevation here which doesn't help and the greens aren't that interesting for the most part. There's a couple of island greens but they're not difficult to hit.

The rough in the back is ungodly bad. If you get off fairway you're in straight scramble mode. The only positive of how thick it is, is that it's hard to go far in to it.

The flow is kind of weird for the course. Not impossible to figure out but not intuitive at all times. 17 to 18 is a weird transition and long walk.

Equipment - The Blues and Reds were natural pads marked by painted cinderblocks; they were uneven footing for the most part. That's usually fine for Red tees due to how short they are but for the blues it's a drawback.

The Tee Signs only list the hole #. There's no hole map or distance info which would help some of the confusion on the front and some of the blind holes on the back.

This place could really use a course map at the parking lot.

Atmosphere - The entire course has some drainage issues. This leads to bugs being a bit of a problem and of course snakes; I saw both.

The wooded holes really are thick jungle off the fairway. The locals have done a great job cleaning up the fairways apparently because you could tell some real TLC was applied. The course really needs more foot traffic and constant maintenance to help keep that back area in better shape.

Other Thoughts:

I commend whoever is doing the work out here because after hearing about this course then playing it I was pleasantly surprised with how well the back 9 looked. Now it still has problems but it's not the horror show I expected.

This course has 3 star potential if they can flesh out the back 9 a bit more and maybe redesign a few holes to make them longer or more interesting. Some holes have already been redone so I believe this course is still in flux and can improve.

Decent Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 2, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-I did like the idea of having an open front 9 and a wooded back 9. The front flowed really well and let you really rip some shots.
-When the course flowed well, the front 9, it was easy to see where the next holes were.
-The 3 tee boxes provided 3 good options for the course based on your skill level.
-Has a practice basket to warm up putting before you start your round.
-Course has some cool mandos that make shots more interesting, yet still doable.
-The course does have many different lines so it didn't feel like you were playing the same hole over and over. It wasn't the most diverse course ever, but it did have some different hole layouts throughout the course.
-I liked how hole 17 and 18 played up against the creek.

Cons:

-Back 9 has no flow at all. Without a course map it can become difficult to figure out the last 9 holes. It's especially confusing when trying to find the pin on hole 15 and finding hole 17 from 16.
-A few of the holes have you throwing across walking paths and could be hazardous if you aren't paying attention to people walking. Hole 11 is especially bad about this as the fairway is literally the walking path and the pin is around a bin. I had to wait 15 minutes for the path to clear of people before I could throw.
-Holes 1 and 18 all have the potential of hitting cars, though you'd have to have a pretty bad throw. On hole 1 I massively turned over my drive and came pretty close to putting my disc in the busy road. On hole 18 if you fade your shot badly(rhbh) you could potentially hit the parking lot. It's an outside shot of hitting cars but if a disc gets away from you it is possible.

Other Thoughts:

It hadn't rained much, if at all, the week before I played this course yet a decent amount of the course was still flooded and soupy. The wooded areas weren't cleared much at all outside of the fairways. It's nit picky but it does make it quite easy to lose some discs. Overall, a course I would gladly play again if in the area but wouldn't travel outside of an hour just for the course.

AAARRRGGGHH!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 massive concrete tee pads set in a city park. We're talking huge trapezoidal monstrosities that no one should complain about.

Nice new baskets that are visible and catch well.

Signs at each pad with a huge number on them. Very visible, even from Virginia.

Front 9 is in a family friendly park setting with trails, benches and a children's play area.

Nicely cared for green grass and large trees dot the front 9. Very scenic and each hole has multiple paths to the basket. Fairly forgiving early on at this course.

Cons:

Walking paths and other park users can be almost anywhere on front 9. Be aware of where you are throwing.

Back 9 is still a work in progress and new.

Navigation can be a little tricky in spots on the back 9.

Hole 13 and 15 have tee pads that seem to be misplaced or crooked. Or the baskets are in the wrong place. Not sure. Hopefully this will be cleaned up.

Other Thoughts:

The front 9 of Stoney Creek is your basic city park course. Probably a great place to bring your girlfriend, wife, children or dogs. There happens to be a disc golf there, so you can have some fun too. Nothing exciting or memorable with the holes or design.

The back 9 seems to be done, but there are some strange things going on there. Hole 13 is a weird RHBH anny route that starts out with the tee pad facing about 90 degrees in the wrong direction. Maybe the basket is being redesigned or moved?? Then you must walk back the length of 13's fairway to get to 14. This could be a safety issue, plus it adds a little bit to the walking.

Hole 15 is another misaligned pad with a narrow path, fairway or something through the woods to the basket. The basket is not visible from the pad, and it would take several acts of God or luck to navigate the path with a disc. I hope this hole gets some attention too.

Hole 16 is a short straight hole that seems like a simple filler to cut down on the long walk to 17.

17 is a decent hole, but there is what appears to be an OB creek to the right and both side of the fairway are roped off to prevent damage to newly planted trees. Chances are the path is too narrow for many golfers and trees with be harmed. The fairway is a nice RHBH anny route to a basket position in some trees. Pretty hole if it can survive.

18 is a longer hole that also has the creek bed on the right. But about half way to the basket is the parking lot on the left. This could be a dangerous hole also. Be sure not to park your care on that side when you pull in!

The back 9 has some potential, but right now it needs some redesign work. It is confusing and a little mixed up at this point.

Hopefully as this course gets cleaned up a little it will be improved, and the back 9 will be something players look forward to. Right now it will just leave you shaking your head.

Needs some work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good variety of holes and shots. Open fornt 9 and wooded back 9 nice change. good mix of long and short shots.

Cons:

Back 9 unforgiving if you go in the woods. Too many thorns. 11 and 16 are outright swamps on both sides of the fairway, which are about as wide as one lane roads. If you stray to the sides your in some smelly NC swamp water. Kids keep messing with the cinder blocks which are the only things marking the tee boxes.

Other Thoughts:

Front 9 is great for beginners, being in the open park area. Busy road just up the small hill along side hole one and end of 18.

decent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The front 9 is pretty good, good open shots, a few hard curves make it decent.

Cons:

oh man where to begin, some of the mandos are literally and l shape, natarual tee pads on the wooded holes are terrible, confusing layout with a little sign on a tree. The wooded back 9 is what makes this course decent at best, I had to run up most of the holes to tell where the basket was and got lost in the woods 3 times. Brush is terrible also very easy to lose disc. No benches or markers for teepads.

Other Thoughts:

At least goldsboro has a course now, not worth a trip but if your in the area might as well play at least the non wooded holes.

Not Too Shabby 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 19, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

New course with nice Discatcher baskets, front 9 is a nice open park with great old growth trees. Back 9 is back into some nice woods. Multiple tees in most holes. Elevated basket on hole 5. The park is pretty easy to find but Google maps makes it look like it is on the opposite side of the road. First 6 holes flow reasonably well.

Quick update: The Whites now have concrete tees and they are very well done.

Cons:

Signage. There are very few signs, especially after hole 5. At least half of the course gets VERY muddy so not a course I'd play after a rainy month. Some holes on the back completely submerged. Gets confusing as to what hole to throw to in quite a few spots. Natural tees that are marked by concrete blocks, hard to spot since they're everywhere due to the 3 sets of tees on most holes. Parts of the course look like it used to have trailers on it because of all the concrete blocks. Back 9 is very confusing, I felt like I was in a scene from Apocalypse Now trying to navigate it.

Other Thoughts:

The first hiccup comes on hole 6, the basket for which lays out of sight to the left, not straight ahead as it seems. To find hole 9 you have to follow the tractor tire tracks up the dirt trail. Swing a right after hole 10 to get to 11. After that, you'll need to hire a sherpa to navigate the rest. A good canoe is vital to scoring well on the back 9. This won't be a bad course if they put in some signage, lay down better tees and work on drainage problems, but if you're in the area, you're better off driving to Kinston.

Update: They've added a bit of signage so it isn't the navigational issue it used to be. I like this course enough to swing by if I'm in the area, especially now since the other course is practically a mile away.
