Sour Tart

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tart Park is an easy, loose layout. Seems fitting.
- Nine holes in a small, community park. Holes all play alongside or over a walking trail. It makes navigation a breeze.
- Not a lot of variety in hole layouts. Holes are mostly open. Trees on #8 are the biggest obstacle.
- Quality tee signs. They almost have a retro vibe to them. Baskets are in good shape too.
- There is supposedly a long layout on many holes. I didn't see any markings for them. Not that I was looking too closely.
- A couple of holes have narrower fairways due to fences or OB fields.
- Close to I-95. Good spot to stop and stretch your legs while getting in a 20-minute round.
- Lots of ace runs. Of these, #4 & 5 are the best.
- It's a simple, scenic course. There's also a rec center here.

Cons:

Way too simple of a layout. I guess any course is better than no course, right?
- Six of nine holes have zero obstacles. Two holes (#3 & 6) each have a single tree that comes into play, slightly.
- Course is completely flat.
- With the course being based around a walking trail. Be mindful when throwing. Even a single person on the trails can slow you down.
- Just not much here to like. You can only throw so many simple, open shots so many times.

Other Thoughts:

Tart is a very bitter course. I'm not sure if hole #1, 3, 4, or 9 is the least appealing hole on the course.
- On the flip side, there's not even an average level hole on the course. I guess #8 is the most appealing/interesting due to the trees and other objects (trash can, park equipment) that are in play.
- Unfortunately, nothing can be done here, with this limited space, to make the course any better.
- Enjoy a couple of easy birdies while playing here. Maybe even an ace. Still, this course will be forgotten rather quickly.
- Pretty backdrop when I played on a sunny, breezy December afternoon. Other than that, nothing to be taken from this place.

One & Dunn: A Drive-by Tale

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Chainstar baskets catch well

+ Tee signs are above average, informative, navigation is a cinch

+ Park is maintained well, low disc-loss potential

+ Two tees on some holes, decent variety in distances

+ Not challenge-less

+ Close to 95, good for the quick bag

Cons:

- Layout runs around, close, or through other park features, upping the risk factor/playability a bit

- Much of the course's challenge comes from its proximity to the aforementioned other park features

Other Thoughts:

Tart Park was a quick drive-by that gave me my NC badge. The course is still super new, and Kenan's review from last year is spot on. I played on a Tuesday, mid-morning. There may have been 3 or 4 other people in the park, including the grounds guy out mowing, well, the grounds - the weather was perfect - clear, not too hot yet, no wind - so pretty ideal conditions. From the parking lot you can tell immediately that this is a classic layout, read: your typical niner-in-a-community-park course: we've got 9 holes that aren't crazy challenging and work their way around/thru all the other park features, meaning potential play interruptions abound.

It's always great to have disc golf included at the park, but it's also always a bit disappointing when you've got the course feeling more like a late addition to things, and a bit crammed into the rest of the park.

I've played far worse, and if I lived in the area I'd be stoked to have it nearby. In fact, it really reminds me of my local niner a lot, but with a bit more potential for other parkgoers to interfere with play. Definitely worth the bag if you're passing through.

Fun Beginners' Course...Watch Out for Pedestrians! drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tart Park DGC is a fun park-style, beginners' course in a very busy public park. The park has ball fields, a playground, and a walking trail (which the disc golf course essentially follows around the park), so there are a lot of park-goers here...and 99% of them aren't disc golfers and scratch their heads watching people throw discs around the park at baskets. In other words, yield to pedestrians, be careful and courteous!

+ Fun beginners' course to introduce new players to the game.

+ Well-maintained park

+ The course is simple to navigate with tee signs on all 9 holes -- and the next tee is usually right next to the previous basket (or very close).

+ Some variety in hole lengths, with two sub-200-foot holes (from the white tees), three in the 200's, two in the 300's, and two around 410 feet.

+ Ace-runs and birdie opportunities abound in this simple red-level course.

+ I like hanging the disc out over the fenced ballfields and hyzering back inbounds. I wouldn't recommend if a baseball game is going on! But it was a fun aspect of the course when i played.

Cons:

This is a fun little course that is convenient to I-95 in Dunn, NC. But there are some drawbacks you should be aware of:

- First and foremost, pedestrian safety is a concern here. When I played, it was a busy weekday evening and multiple youth soccer games and other activities were going on. On the short par 4 hole #2 (only 372 feet from the white tees, so a reachable par 4 for some players...although not me!), I had to short a short putter shot off the tee so as not to endanger the people using the batting cage to the right of the hole or the people watching a soccer game to the left of the hole. And then essentially on every hole after that, you have to watch for people walking on the jogging trail. But the worst and most dangerous hole is #8. I had to skip that one entirely. It's a longer par 4 (412 feet from the white tee), but plays right through a playground and crowded area of the park with people watching games. I looked for places to tee off closer to the basket that would've been safer, and really didn't have any opportunities until what was essentially a jump putt. I would probably just pull that hole and look for another area to put that hole. There seemed to be an area near hole #7 to add a hole.

- This is a wide open course with very few obstacles. You can basically approach each hole with whatever shot you want. It does not force you into certain types of shots.

- Low on the challenge scale, but still fun.

Other Thoughts:

It's worth bagging this short course if you're passing through. Just be respectful and yield to pedestrians.
