A crafty fox, with a great finish 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 13, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good tee pads, concrete base with rubber mats.
Tee signs are also good, with layout, distance and par.
DISCatchers were in pretty good shape.
Mostly wooded course, a couple of open shots off the tee.
Lots of elevation change on this course, up and downhill, and a couple with both on the same hole.
Small park, but the course is in areas away from other uses.

Cons:

I played this course in December, and the rough was pretty bad in some places. I didn't have too much trouble finding errant drives, but in the summer, this would be a big issue here.
#3 plays pretty close to the entrance drive, but the route is through a narrow tunnel to the basket in the open. It would be a much better, and unique hole, if the tee was also in the open and away from the road.
Along with the thick rough, a few of the fairways are pretty tight.

Other Thoughts:

This course is in a rural area, in the town of Waynesboro, not too far from Staunton, VA, so its nice to have a course in a new area, and something else to do at the park. Staunton is about 10 miles away, after that, there is no other course within 15 miles. There is a large open area you drive through going back to the park, not sure if this is park property or not, but it would hold some long, open holes if it was used.
There are a nice variety of holes here, it feels like it was designed by someone who knew what they were doing, and not a general park employee.
With the tight rough, the Par 4s on sub-400' holes are not out of line.
They left the most challenging, and interesting, hole for last. #9 is a 374' foot hole that starts out uphill, under a low ceiling, then at the top of the hill, goes left and downhill to an open green area. If you can get a drive below the ceiling, to the top of the hill, you'll be in good shape.
Certainly not a destination course, but a fun play, if the rough is not too bad.

Not as good as expected 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

It was a great surprise to see a course in Waynesboro even if it is only 9 holes. The course is very new so I'll cut it some slack but there are a few things that really bugged me.

But first - the Pros:
- Good signs with easy navigation
- Nice pads - a little small by current standards but they have thick three piece rubber (not plastic) mats with diamond tread.
- Nice use of the limited elevation
- Good variation of configurations - ups/downs, rights/lefts
- Bathrooms near the parking lot.

Cons:

Now the Cons:
- Two of the tee pads are not oriented correctly (see below)
- Most fairways are TIGHT and as soon as you get off the fairway it's THICK brush and briars
- The park has a lot of open fields that could have been used for more open bomber holes
- Some of the fairways are completely bare and unless something is done (grass/mulch) they are going to erode.
- Some of the holes are pretty short. Which is okay for rec play but there's no second tee location for more advanced players.

Other Thoughts:

Other comment:
Maybe I caught it on a slow day but I didn't have any encounters with dogs. There were dogs but none anywhere near the course.

Hole 1 - Straight up-hill. The fairway necks down a little just before the basket so you have to be dead on to birdie.

Hole 2 - Short down-hill with a slight left hook at the end with several guard trees before the basket. Very birdie-able. I don't have much of a RHFH flick and I would have had an easy birdie but I hit a guard tree and missed the long putt.

Hole 3 - Here's one of the tee pads that's seems completely wrong. The hole diagram suggests going up a tight fairway between a fence line and a line of trees and brush. But the tee pad is rotated counter clockwise about 30 degs from the "fairway", pointed at the trees. While it might be possible for some to throw over the trees and land in the field beyond that's not what's on the diagram. That throw would be very high and stall and there's some over hanging limbs from trees near the tee pad so the vertical window is pretty tight. If you go up the suggested fairway there's a reasonable likelihood of ending up in the road beyond the fence. Suggest moving the tee pad to the other side of the line of trees and turn this into a wide open up-hill field bomber.

Hole 4 - Up then down right hand dogleg. You can't see the basket till you're around the dogleg. This could be a very interesting hole in the future but for now if you get off the tight fairway - wear some heavy pants cause you'll be in the briars. If you hit a tree wrong and go deep - just retee.

Hole 5 - The tee is lined up directly at the basket but not with the fairway. There's actually a tree about 30 feet directly in front of the tee. The course map isn't correct here either. The hole actually is flat then dog-legs left up hill through a bunch of guard trees. This could be a nice hole once it gets better broke in and tee pad realigned.

Hole 6 - Short straight downhill. Pretty easy par three. The basket could get moved further down hill to make hole longer and more interesting.

Hole 7 - Slight dogleg right uphill. I kind of like this hole but again really rough if out of the fairway.

Hole 8 - One of the better holes. Pretty straight downhill. The fairway is wider on this hole and has some grass. But don't overshoot the basket.

Hole 9 - Another good hole. Up-hill with a hard left turn then back down hill. The first part of the hole is a little tight but it opens up and those that don't get up hill enough the approach shot will likely be a little further up-hill then hook left & down into an opening.

Overall - Maybe I was disappointed because I was expecting more with the high early ratings. Should have known better. Clearing of the underbrush just off the fairways and some longer holes would help this a lot but for now - it's a nice average 9-hole local course. Personally I like Kiwanis DGC in Staunton better. If a 2.75 was possible I'd give it that but since it's new I'll give it a three rather than 2.5.

A very tight 9 holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Signage is excellent and navigation is a piece of cake.
Fairways are tight, sometimes very tight, with some interesting doglegs.
Several holes have interesting elevation changes.
The baskets are all brand new and in great shape.
Tee pads are a diamond-plate plastic which are good now, but I worry it won't age as well as concrete.

Cons:

The rough is solid thorns on several holes, which is frustrating when the fairways are as tight as they are.
None of the holes are particularly long, and some of the pars can feel generous.
Only one tee pad and basket per hole.
Some mud here and there. The course is still young, so hopefully they can work on this.

Other Thoughts:

The entire Coyner Springs park is a dog park. Technically, dogs are only supposed to be off-leash in the open field, which would include holes 1-3, but many people leave their dogs off-leash back in the woods where 4-9 are.
I consider this a pro. I brought my dog along with me, tired him out a little, and then let him tag along while I played the course. The only dog that tried to pick up any of my discs was my own, but I can see how it might be a problem on a much busier day or for a golfer afraid of dogs.

Finally, A Course in Waynesboro! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 4, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- A disc golf course in Waynesboro!
- A good mix of elevation.
- Great tee pads
- Easy to navigate. Very good signage (especially since adding the directional sign from to #3 to #4).
- Every time I play the course, it seems to be getting better.
** Favorite Hole - #8 - It's my favorite tee shot on the course.

Cons:

- Hole #3 is an odd one to me. Even if you throw a perfect RHFH flick or RHBH anhyzer over the trees, you are in the very tall grass that is loaded with ticks. The potenial throw up the right side (with the fence) isn't really an option, unless you have some serious skill with tight shots.
- Good amount of ticks. Thorns are everywhere in the rough.
- Holes can be very muddy (even swampy) after rain.
- Dogs. I have had several large dogs run up to me barking loudly (which doesn't necessarily bother me, but it could bother some golfers). One dog did jump up on me, giving me a pretty good scratch on my chest.

Other Thoughts:

This course is set in a dog park, so be aware of that. I would love to see this course expanded to 18. There is a lot of open field in the front of the park that would be wonderful for some longer tee shots. Of course I'm not sure how that would work with all of the dog trails there now.
