Fun city course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

- FREE
- Cement tee pads for short and long tees
- Rubber tee pads for the par 2 tee on every hole
- Great signage
- Lots of shot variety

Cons:

- Garbage. There were a lot of beer cans, bottles, and other garbage on the course; I will take a grocery bag next time to pick up what I can
- Some trees in the fairways that could be taken out
- The walk from hole 17 to 18 is longer than many of the holes themselves

Other Thoughts:

The Hollows is a fun course with decent shot variety. It is a welcome addition to the area.

Much Needed Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Free is for me...especially if it's decent.
•It fills a void of disc courses in southern NH that is badly needed. Greater Manchester residents' best options were to go to Pelham, Wilton, or Canterbury and those all have their pluses, but it's nice to have someplace closer that is nice and free. Did I mention that it's free?
•It has a practice basket in the parking lot near the 1st tee.
•Quick on/off of the highway. ~3 minutes from I-293.
•Because of its shape/design, you can adjust your round to accommodate your needs. You can drop down from many of the front 9 baskets to back 9 tees if you're pressed for time, lacking the energy, or the kids aren't enjoying themselves.
•The city directors are very much behind it and alternate the baskets between locations fairly regularly.

Cons:

•I'm the first person to say that various insect life are to be expected when playing a game that takes place in the woods, but the mosquitoes here are exceptional. Bring bug spray in the late spring/early summer months when there are still wet areas. Once things dry out, it's not as bad.
•I know this was supposed to be a championship course designed by an actual champion, but many casual players might find certain holes daunting. Many of the rear tee boxes don't have very clear lanes, and the lanes that are there are very tight. Holes 2, 7, 9, 13, 15, and 17 from the back tees are more of a throw-and-hope situation.
•I've seen worse amounts of trash at other courses, but fixing a garbage/recycle container every couple holes (and emptying it somewhat regularly) would help a lot. Currently there are some at the first tee and at the junction of 8/9/13/14, but other than that, not much.
•I'm not sure how the pallets are going to hold up with navigating the water/mud between 17 & 18 once next spring comes. A more permanent crossing aid should be put in.
•Not to whine or reveal my skill level, but given some of the tight tee shots, some of the pars should be adjusted for the rear tee/B basket combo positions, namely 11 and 18, and to a lesser degree 9, 10.
•Due to its popularity and depending on when you go, you're either hoping to be let through by the group in front of you or having to let the group/person in back of you play through....sometimes several times per round. Not really a complaint since you often get to meet nice people and see how they approach the holes, but it can disrupt your flow sometimes.

Other Thoughts:

I'm too grateful to have a free course close to where I live to focus on the things I don't like. In the 5 months since it opened, it has already gotten pretty stomped down and broken in. The casual player can find a challenging but reasonable round from the short tees.

Bring your bug spray 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 30, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. FREE
2. Ample dedicated parking lot.
3. Porta-let near hole 1
4. Enthusiastic and approachable course management
5. Excellent signage for rear tees and directions to following tees.
6. Good course flow
7. Wide and easy to follow walking paths.
8. Plenty of room for benches at the tee areas.
9. Very much a "placement" course with well protected baskets.
10. Room for expansion, possibly another course.

Cons:

1. Forward tee pads: They are raised above ground and short enough to make long run-ups awkward. Caveat: When the baskets are in the short position, run-ups are helpful on only a few holes on the back 9. Most baskets are reachable with a stand-still throw.
2. Some of the long positions for tees and baskets just make the hole a little longer rather than change the hole.
3. The walk from 17 to 18 is long and uphill and could accommodate another hole or two. Hole 18 then also plays uphill.
4. No benches at the tee areas.
5. The swampy area behind hole 17 is difficult to navigate. There are pallets but needs something more substantial like a raised walk made of 2x8s

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun wooded course that accommodates all skill levels and seems to be very popular with new players of all ages. It is managed and maintained by the parks and rec. dept. whose chiefs are enthusiastic about golf. The water icon might be misleading - most of the water is in the ravines that run along the sides of fairways and between some of the holes. There are a few mucky and swampy areas that you definitely want to avoid, but it is fairly easy to do so. It is moderately hilly except for the walk from hole 17 to 18 which is long and uphill. Experienced players looking for a challenge will find the short tees to short basket locations a little boring. As of the time of this review, the rear tees have not yet been installed but I believe will be 5x12 concrete, will be installed in the coming weeks and their locations should make for a challenging course. Some of the above cons will be addressed by course improvements and volunteer efforts. There are more challenging, "longer" courses nearby, but it is nice to see DG growing in the state of NH. The Hollows is a welcome addition to the Greater Manchester NH area.

FYI: This course has the most mosquitoes I've ever encountered on any course I've played on the East Coast. They are treacherous.
