A rugged pitch-and-putt on steroids 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Timmons is a super fun and somewhat easy course with a variety of wooded holes that will test your control while still giving you chances to air it out once in a while. The design of the course allows you to have aggressive and conservative shots on nearly every hole and will punish shots that go off the fairway, namely, with the creek. But don't let the water hazards scare you; discs can be retrieved from nearly everywhere if you're willing to poke with a stick or get a shoe wet.

Every kind of shot will be able to stand out here. The few long holes will help the bombers. Some holes curve right or left, and most can be reached with a few different lines. Some holes favor overhand, with a steep upslope on two holes and many holes where absolute precision is required. Holes 2 and 14 favor putter drives, and most are about right for a midrange.

Death putts are super common here. With the creek lurking near the basket on half of the front nine, and other baskets on a sideslope (8, 10, 16), and drop-offs if you go long, putting is put at a premium. Furthermore, because of the shapes of many fairways, it's difficult to be parked off the tee. You may run into the foliage late near the basket, or get to the top of a hill but are left short, with a dangerous putt for birdie or par.

Open and wooded holes are mixed excellently. Every hole has some danger to get into, but the difficulty of the tee shot and the number of trees you could hit early varies significantly. Holes 11, 13, 15, and 18 are the more open holes, but they all have danger in either woods, hills, or the creek. I especially like 18 as a finishing hole, though it will be a tweener for many players. The more wooded ones are still fair, providing clear lines that anyone should be able to hit but will be more difficult the more aggressive your drive is.

A few holes favor anhyzer shots, regardless of how you throw. Holes 8, 9, 13, and 16 may be good for this, and while they all offer hyzer lines for some players, many will be throwing anhyzer. Hole 10 has an interesting high route and left route, both of which could have anhyzer shots thrown on them. This all is an indication of good course design.

There are also a lot of ace run holes. Some are rather dangerous if you run it (2, 17), but some are a little safer (4, 15).

Cons:

In all honesty, it's a rather easy course. Most of the holes under 300 feet won't provide a ton of challenge for top players, and even if you don't know your way around the course, you may find yourself with a lot of birdies. Now, it may seem like this is a good course for beginners, but there are enough trees and holes with the creek in play that this isn't quite the case. As a result, the number of people for whom this is an excellent course is quite low. That said, I think anyone should be able to enjoy themselves here at least a little.

A few holes really only favor one kind of shot. Hole 12 is the worst offender, with RHBH/LHFH being the only legit option, and hole 4 isn't much better. Overall, I think this course favors the RHBH player a little too much. There are exceptions, of course (holes 4 and 5), but that's about it.

There are no alternate pins, something that would make this course much better. I would like to see some short pins on some of the harder holes, namely 5 and 18, as well as a right pin on 12. Hole 16 has plenty of room to spread out, and if you really tried hard, you could squeeze in alternate pins on 8 and 14. Because this course is a little on the short side, I can imagine it getting repetitive after a while when every tee shot is the same. There's also the hillside between holes 16 and 9 that wasn't utilized, though it's not a grassy area and erosion could have been an issue if the course ran through there.

No par 4's. Hole 5 could be considered one, and there isn't a whole lot of room for longer holes, but it is something the course lacks that's preventing it from getting to the next level.

Other Thoughts:

This course certainly isn't the best imaginable, but it's still a fun play, and the pros far outweigh the cons. But the lack of variety and difficulty for top players prevent me from giving a high rating, though if some work is put in here, I can see a 4.0 rating being on the horizon.

A few tee signs are damaged or missing, but it's not a big deal since navigation is mostly straightforward and you should be able to see the basket from the tee. The only spot of tricky navigation is hole 12, which is across the road and might be easy to skip, since the tee of 13 is near the basket of 11.

Mud could potentially be an issue, but I can't say for certain. There is a mini creek on the fairway of 11, though. But as far as I can tell, the creek swallows up the water pretty well.

Short , Popular And Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Timmons Park is located just north of I-375 in a residential section of Greenville . When coming into the park , you will see baskets immediately for #'s 12 & 13 . The parking lot is adequate sized , There is a large bathroom at the parking lot , You have to descend the stairs in order to access hole #1 .
The Equipment -There is a nice kiosk with a map before hole #1 . The tee pads are cement and 3 1/2 X 7' . Kind of small , but at least most of the holes are shorter . The tee signs are adequate with hole # par and distance . The baskets are blue rimmed Discatchers . There are benches at the pads . They are much needed as the course seems packed during the weekends .
The Landscape -The course was mowed and trees trimmed when I was here . A lot of work is done either by the local disc golf club or Parks Department to keep the area clean . The course has more of a park-style feel to it . Lots of the course sit in and around a large gully . The gully adds a good amount of elevation . There are some rock formations at some holes , causing your discs to sometimes ricochet and roll away. There is a creek that comes into play on many of the holes . A fair amount of trees add to tricky pin placements or drives off the tees . A couple of nice bridges complete the scene .
Course Appearance/Atmosphere . The course isn't spread out among a vast amount of land , but that area is appealing . The combination of the semi woods holes , creek that divides the hills and the rock ledges ( see hole #8 ) are picturesque . The atmosphere is light . There are some joggers that are in the lots and on the roads , and you might run into a dog walker on the fringes of the course , but mostly , it is an easy going disc golf round .
The Highlights - #1 starts you off with a 265' risk reward shot with a canopy of trees forcing an open right to left avenue . The hill is on the extreme right and the creek sits on the immediate left of the basket . Skipoffs will be punished . #6 is a straight shot to a basket flanked by trees and a creek mere feet behind the basket . #10 is an uphill drive to a basket sitting on a hill protected by a rock ledge and some tree roots willing to roll your disc to the bottom . #11 is a 320' shot to a basket sitting on a thin rock hill plateau . #14 is a short gully shot . #17 is a steep downhill midrange/putter run under a canopy of trees . #18 is a nice ending . flat and 370' , the creek is on your right and hilly woods is off to your left .
Signature Hole - A general favorite is #5 ( 425' ) it will play long because the creek follows the fairway slowly left to right . There are trees to contend with in front of you at about 260' to 270' , The basket is perched on a hill at the end . It is also one of the more scenic holes .
Disc Risk - Surprisingly lower than medium, for a course with water and some overgrowth and tightening fairways The upkeep on this course , plus the holes being fairly short and the creek walls being steep but easy to fetch your disc out of the water .help . The holes giving you the most problem will be tight lane #16 that runs left to right on the top rim of the gully and #17 if your downhill drive fades hard right/left or kicks off a branch .
The Time - It took me a little over an hour to play here , but some of it was because of the stack of people playing on a Saturday afternoon . A foursome on a normal day will get through it an average of slightly under 2 hours
The crowd of people playing this course will be a pro And a con . Parks and Rec departments feed off of public and local interest . Cities will bend the ear of places like this because if the course is frequented by out of town guests , they will spend money into the local economy ( Many cities are just getting this idea . Sheeesh ) Lots of variety in the holes .

Cons:

#1 Safety - The sides to most of this creek are steep and you could easily twist an ankle if not careful . That is , unless you are hit with a disc first . The course grounds are packed pretty tight , and some of the holes are blind shots . I won't be surprised hearing that someone gets hit every weekend day .
#2 navigation is pretty good as long as you have your map . There is a good walk where the course splits at 9-10 . Hole 12 takes you across the park road . After finishing gully hole #14 , your instinct to go to the visible pad for 17 on your right . The #15 tee pad is to your left and down the small hill . #16 is to the left and in the woods of the #15 basket .
#3 Challenge - I am mediocre and shot under par here . Very good players will shoot way under par . This shouldn't be a con , though . The course is geared for a fun round . If you want all out challenge , go to Tyger , Shoally or Holsten Creek to the east .
#4 Treks - The long walk from 9-10 is nothing compared to trudging along a thin path after #18 to the bridge , only to cross it and go up a bunch of steps to get to the car . Have your water ready .
Wear hiking boots if you have them . Some steep descents into the creek or down the #17 fairway, and up #8 .

Other Thoughts:

This course gives you everything that it has , and it has a lot . Variety of holes , and an almost proportionate amount of right and left angled holes . Many improvements have gone into Timmons , and it has paid off in the amount of people that frequent the course . You can always value a course by the amount and the variety of players that use it . I saw newbies playing with locals , a player being introduced to the game . several groups of accomplished players going for risk/reward shots near the creek . and even a couple of what I think were Mennonites in full dress ( that might have been a first for me ) playing and having a good time . The Fun Factor here is through the roof . I know it grabbed ahold of me early in the round . The course may be short but it's not gimmicky . Thank You Greenville parks and Rec and Upstate Disc Golf Club for keeping this course fun and allowing me to enjoy a part of my Saturday here .

My Recommendation - This course can accommodate everyone from the curious and novice to the tournament tested veterans . I can't imagine anyone not having fun and passing their experiences on to others . If I was local , I would be here all the time with my friends . When driving down toward Columbia or up towards North Carolina , it's easy to detour down rt 25 , up or down I-385 or across I-85 to enjoy this course . Play It !!!!

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 17, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

They did a good job taking advantage of the elevation in this course. The park is not very big, but they managed to squeeze all 18 holes in it. Most holes are rather short so it is a good course if you don't have a very long drive, with a few chances for eagles.

Cons:

Some holes are missing signs, also the course flows pretty well and its easy to follow, but some better signage would be good in some parts.
It can get a little crowded.

Wow! Quite Appealing! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 16, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Knowing for years that this was a short course, I didn't think it was going to be as great as it really was. While most holes here are pretty straightforward, there are some that are quite tricky, and a few that are long.

-I always like it when the baskets are of different color, they have dark blue belts, so they are easy to see because of the dark color.

-Has plenty of unique fairways. While many baskets are straight ahead, some holes force you to go left or right. And hole 5 is a very fun dogleg right par 3. I birdied it yesterday and felt pretty awesome since it's 425' long.

-The elevation here was surprisingly more of a factor than it appears on the media. The holes that are downhill have a lot more elevation than you'd think if you haven't played here before. Many previous reviewers mentioned #17 so you'll look forward to that hole because of the major downhill, but there are a few holes here with elevation that comes close to #17's. #2 is a straight downhill ace run with the creek just a few feet behind the basket. Due to elevation loss of at least 20 feet, and the hole being around 200', it's difficult to not go long. #3 is back up the hill through a mando gate. And there is more than just those few holes.

-The creek is in play on most of the front nine and on about three holes on the back. Makes a common appearance but it's a good one.

-While #17 is the signature hole by most standards, I'm going to pile on and say it's an awesome straight down ace run. You are throwing from the highest to lowest point point of the park basically. But my favorite hole was #12. #12 is down a rather big hill and is a forced righty backhand hole because of one gap. The creek is behind the basket. There is death all around the left side. Lefties may hate this hole but it is the most scenic hole in my opinion.

Cons:

-Nothing here is really that bad in all honesty. I don't like #9, I think it's a very annoying short hole that was made just to irritate higher rated players. The fairway is like 5' wide and the creek is around 10' left of the tee-pad or less. So you're destined to go the creek. The mando tree left of the "fairway" points to the right and eliminates the idea of throwing a sidearm around the creek. This was my only bogey, and I birdied the two longest holes.

-A couple of holes here are filled with severely exposed roots. Erosion may become a real problem within a few years. #6 blew my mind with the roots close to the basket.

-Course could surely use new tee signs because many are gone.

-#13 is straight ahead but there is a tree straight ahead close to the pad with a couple overhead branches. It's tough to stay in bounds on this hole because of that. It's 300' uphill and the road is left of the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

-Timmons was better than I expected. It has quite a bit of elevation, a great variety of par 3's, and for it being in a rough part of town, it sure is pretty. You'll definitely want to take a photo of a few holes here.

-Starts off where placement is critical. Holes 1 and 2 can be unforgiving because the creek is close by. Holes 3 and 4 have mandos, and it continues to get tricky on the front nine. I shot a 25 on the front and a 23 on the back. There is plenty of evidence to support that the front nine is harder. The back nine has a little more elevation, and less risky tee shots. And the ace runs can definitely be aced by rec players. Only hole that truly seemed dangerous on the back was #16 because it plays on the side of the huge hill, so rollers can occur.

-Course was quite crowded when I played; it seems like the locals thoroughly enjoy this course and I think you will too. Unless you really want to see long distance. But in all fairness, holes 5 and 18 will seem like tweeners to some of you because of them being long.

A pretty good short course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Even though the baskets are older Discatchers, they still catch well.

The course uses the elevation and creek very effectively.

There are a couple holes where you can really rip a disc, specifically 5, 13 and 18

Not too many issues with maintenance, aside from a few graffiti issues

Most holes have benches, and there are a couple trash cans along the course in good locations

There are bathrooms in the parking lot

Flow isn't too big of an issue except for one hole, although there are a few twists and turns throughout the course

The course plays host to an annual tournament, the Upstate Classic, which will be played for the 17th time this fall.

Cons:

There can be some vandalism issues now and then

Signage on the whole is pretty poor, but navigation isn't the most difficult overall

Hole 11's fairway has something that appears to be mud but probably isn't

Hole 12's straight at the basket line can be pretty well covered by tree branches

You have to cross the main park road to play hole 12, which can be easy to miss

Hole 5 is a par 3, and seems to require an incredible shot and putt to get a birdie. I list this as a con because there are several other spots where the pin could have been moved which have created a reachable but still difficult par 3. However, it's still a very fun hole

Other Thoughts:

Timmons Park is an older, but still very good, disc golf course in the Upstate. It plays in and around a little valley in a nice older city park with a creek. Most holes are reachable, but there are some placement shots as well. The front 9 is a bit more technical than the back nine, being crammed around the creek and ballfield towards the back of the park. However, these are some very fun holes which have many basket placements close to the creek, and can create some fun risk/reward shots. There are also some very tight windows off the tee which make tee shots difficult, but also fun. The back 9 plays a bit more open, with more room between the holes. There are a couple tee shots dealing with trees, but for the most part the holes feel more open. The back nine also uses the elevation effectively. You can definitely tell that it's an old course, but it doesn't feel run down, rather just worn in. There are some abandoned tee and pin locations which I think add a neat sense of history to the course. I don't really think the lack of tee signs really detracts from the course, although a few next tee signs would be a good addition on a couple holes. Overall though, this is a really fun course to play; there are some ace runs, some classic disc golf, and a few strategic holes. I always love having a chance to play a round at Timmons Park.

Specific thoughts on some holes which I just want to mention:

I've aced hole 2, which is also a good risk/reward hole; you can either run the ace or short birdie putt, or can play a hyzer layup shot to get a layup par or a longer birdie putt.

They are building a neighborhood behind the park, and have recently fenced off an area behind hole 4 where a very bad shot could potentially find its way over the fence. Hopefully this doesn't become a concern later.

Hole 5 is one of my favorite holes on the course; you can either play to and around the turn for a shorter upshot, or throw long, past the trees, to a secondary fairway up top with a longer but more open upshot. I do wish they hadn't moved the pin so far around the turn, but rather had put it further back up the hill from where it had been. Then the pin would be reachable with a very nice drive. However, where it is now is a great green, so it really is what it is, which is to say a bit of a tweener hole.

Hole 9 may feel very restrictive, but there is a RH thumber line through the left gap to the pin.

Hole 10 has what feels like the most uncomfortable teepad on the course, with a large tree to the right that it feels like you can hit with your follow-through; the green on this hole is really fast as well, with long rollaways a likely scenario for missed putts and upshots

There is a RHBH hyzer line on hole 12 that sets you up nicely for a par. It's kind of a difficult angle; I feel like this is probably the worst hole on the course.

Hole 14 is a fun ace run; I've had one chain out. The pin was moved about six inches right in preparation for a teepad move that never materialized; oh well, still a fun hole.

Hole 17 is the classic Upstate top-of-the-world shot, really fun.

I feel like Hole 18 is probably one of the prettiest on the course. It also feels a bit like a tweener hole for someone like myself, who can only throw around 330-350' max; a birdie is possible but really unlikely, while a par is pretty routine. However, the woods to the left and creek to the right definitely present some danger if your throw is off line; this is a great finishing hole.

A great small course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Well maintained teepads
- Good signage. You can't get lost.
- A surprisingly beautiful, little park.
- Though full of short par 3's, some of them are really quite tricky, requiring some touch.
- A great beginner course since it's not a bomber course, but also a great way for a veteran player to practice approaches and some ob-threatening putts.
- A course that really rewards simple, accurate throws over any huge drives. You'll only use driver a couple times at most.
- Good use of the water hazard on a bunch of holes. You'll be able to retrieve the disc though if you go in.
- A good mixture of whole types and a surprisingly good use of elevation and water, as well as woods/fields.

Cons:

It's short. Mostly par 3's. If you only wanna throw huge drives every time, this ain't the course for you.

Other Thoughts:

If you're a frequent player, play this course as a great way to play a quick round and work on medium approaches and putts that require some touch and skill. For such a short course, very well done.

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is the best in Greenville and the only 18 hole course in the Downtown area. It fits with the character of the city very well.

The first thing that stands out is this property is small. I have seen 9 hole courses with more land than this has. but they managed to put 18 good to great holes and make it work.

The creek is a major part of the course and it comes into play on holes: 1,2,5,7,8,9,10,11,12, and 18. I have played this course countless times and it never fails that I end up in the creek at some point.

the front and back are pretty different from eachother. the Front nine has a lot more birdie opportunity and is where I usually try to get my score down. The back nine has some longer, more treacherous holes, (10,11,12,18) Hole 5 is prob the toughest 2 on the course from my perspective. Its a 350+ dogleg right with an OB creek on the right. and the whole fairway is on the side of a hill, sloping towards the creek.

Timmons also has a good bit of variety. Left doglegs, right doglegs, uphill, downhill, straight tunnels. It has everything.

Cons:

The parking lot is a little close on a few holes.

There are vandals that feel the need to deface these baskets with profanity and that drives me crazy

People may complain about it being too short. but these courses can really mold you into a better golfer. you need to control your disc, stay away from the creek and throw straight.

Other Thoughts:

Please visit this gem. It wont take long to play, and it will be an enjoyable day. the trees provide some nice cover from the SC heat and this is the oldest Course in the Upstate.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice course located close to downtown Greenville. Very well designed and fun course to play. This is a very technical but very long course, the shot variety called for is great and I love the elevation change. The small creek running thru the course provides interest and challenge without the specter of having your disc eaten buy an errant throw. The wooded holes all have good lines available with often a choice of hyzer or anhyzer shots. There are concrete pads at each hole many benches and trash cans available. This was one of the cleanest parks I have played, I don't think I found any trash laying on the ground. The baskets are fairly old and some are a little rusty but they all caught my disc well and that is the point. There are some interesting basket placements with 12 on the steep side hill being my favorite. A disc could pop out and roll a long way here. Navigation was fairly easy except for 12 which I missed completely. While I would call this a very beginner friendly course there is sufficient challenge along with several legit ace runs to keep the experienced players happy. A ran into several locals who were all friendly and helpful. There is obviously a very active disc golf community here. Unfortunately I did not have time to stay and play doubles.

Cons:

Some of the signs were missing and of course I missed hole 12. A next tee sign at 11 would be very helpful here. There were some kids playing in the creel behind the basket for hole 2. Not wanting to hit any kids I was forced to play very short. This is a great hole with creek right behind the basket

Other Thoughts:

This is a very fun course to play. If I am ever back in the Greenville area I would love to play here again.

Pros:

Very SOLID course in my opinion. Great mix of elevation throughout the entire course. You need a variety of shots to score well, this is probably one of the better wooded courses I've played in terms of difficulty and variety. Every hole has something different that will challenge your ability to shape shots around trees and control your distance.
For being a wooded course you get the breakout the driver a good bit. The back 9 is tougher than the front 9, but the front 9 requires more control. Several tight fairways that will test you, and a lot of elevation practically on every hole.
Pretty easy to navigate, hole #12 is across the street easy to skip if you haven't played before. None of the water is bad enough to where you'll lose a disc.
Really enjoyed this course and I'd recommend it to anyone in the area or passing through.

Cons:

Restrooms were locked.
- I really don't have anything bad to say other than maybe next tee signage (it's there just make it more noticeable or more benches and trash cans, but I feel like you could say that about pretty much any course.
- It lacks the degree of risk / reward that will cause you to lose a disc. No water to throw over or shot that makes you nervous to throw. There you go....

Other Thoughts:

I took two guys who just started playing and they said they enjoyed it more that the other courses in the Greenville area. Honestly, I think they got better from playing this course because it forced them to control their shots and they realized that elevation can really effect your score once that disc starts rolling downhill.

Fun little course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is pretty fun.

Plenty of elevation to keep you entertained, excellent use of the land available.

Nice little creek flowing through a lot of the holes, I'm always a fan of well placed OB and there are a couple pin placements that make you think about your shot selection.

Tons of benches out here, almost on every hole, maybe on every single hole, I don't remember.

The teesigns are nothing special but they get the job done, the distances all seemed accurate which is a pro over a lot of courses.

Another thing that has become a huge thing I view is greens and green speed, this course has some very fun ones that definitely make you think about the angle that you are coming at the pin, some very quick ones here, I love it.

Cons:

The teepads are a bit narrow, I think the length of them was alright, just wish they were a bit wider.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun little course, I think for backhands I used a putter and a roc almost the entire time, only needed a driver for some flicks, I played really poorly and still shot +2 or so, so it's a pretty easy course.

If you are in the area you SHOULD check it out, it was certainly fun, which to me is always the biggest pro about a course.

Timmons Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an extremely fun course set in a great little park. Lots of shade trees, a bunch of elevation, and a nice creek set the tone. Though the holes are predominately short, thoughtful basket placements and consideration for terrain and natural features make for some interesting holes. You'll find many baskets perched on elevated areas so watching an arrant putt or an unlucky bounce roll away won't be uncommon. Precise shots are rewarded as many holes require almost laser accuracy. Half hearted shots will have you adding plenty of strokes. There's plenty of risk/reward shots scattered around the course too. Many times a roll away will flirt with the before mentioned creek. There are at least a dozen of these creek shots so of course there are plenty of chances to ring up extra OB strokes. In addition, there is a generous mix of up/down, left/ right, and strait shots giving plenty of variety. All in all, this is a solid course and really is a pleasure to play.

Concrete tee pads, signage (albeit spotty), and reliable baskets are all here. Benches on a few holes add to the overall package. There are bridges in areas where it counts. A kiosk with pertinent info greets you at the first hole. Finally, clean bathrooms and a water fountain are also close to the course.

You'll find really easy navigation with only a slightly confusing area at the 11/12 transition and to a lesser degree 14/15 as after 15 it seems natural to head to 17. (For those who haven't played, 16 is tucked in the woods to the left)

I met/talked to several locals during my round. They were very friendly and almost seemed excited to have me as a guest on the course. That's always a plus when visiting from out of town.

Cons:

The course is missing any meaningful distance and overall it depends on short technical holes for its challenge. After all, there are only three holes that even top 300'. Beyond that, you'll have to get a little picky to find major cons here. The tee pads are a little shorter than typical. The consolation is that given the short holes, you probably won't miss the extra foot or two.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this park a lot. After just a few holes I knew this was going to be an enjoyable round. Ample birdie opportunities along with plenty of risks combined for a fun yet challenging layout. Holes 1-10 were my favorite as far as looks go. Then 11-18 have almost another personality but are still nice. I think anybody would have a great time playing here. Beginners to advanced players, there is something for everybody. Enjoy!

Home Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Relatively short course that makes great use of the small amount of land it is on.
-Elevation comes into play on most holes which makes the shots more interesting.
-The creek makes a great natural OB line.
-Pretty open but some trees to deal with on every hole.
-Plenty of variety.
-Newly installed benches on every tee.
-Good for introducing friends to the game.

Cons:

-Its relative shortness can be a con if you are looking to play a longer round.
-A practice basket would be nice.
-Hole 12 seems a little unnecessarily difficult to birdie. It's practically a triple mando (hitting a gap, while keeping it low) but requires a decent amount of power to get it down the hill.
-Not really a con, just part of the game, but a few baskets are on hillsides, so putts that hit the basket low or high can drop then, pick up and roll all the way to the OB creek, turning your birdie into a double bogie.

Other Thoughts:

The valley landscape with all the trees gives the course a lot of character. I'm glad it's so close to my work so I can play it during lunch.

Classic old-school course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a classic, old school course designed before the big rimmed drivers became prevalent. The course offers a little bit of everything from touch shots, sloping greens, nice elevation changes and a couple of chances to let one fly.

The course has a nice creek that rolls through the course giving some nice OB on several holes. The creek isn't deep enough to keep you from retrieving a disc and not too wide to cross to the other side to chase down an errant shot.

It's a great use of the land available.

The best thing about Timmons is it gives you a feel of what Disc Golf was meant to be or least what it was years ago but it still offers a challenge for seasoned veterans and to new players just starting out.

Cons:

The tee pads are really small and if you haven't played recently some of the design changes are not clearly marked.

Other Thoughts:

This is the first course in the Upstate of South Carolina and is a classically Innova Designed Course. The local club does an excellent job with maintenance and they run a Tuesday night league during the summer and you'll find plenty of action there on the weekends.

This is a fun course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pros
-Course is located in a very nice park
-Concrete Tee's, Signs (no map), Scorecards (empty the day I played)
-Good use of elevation and terrain. The course plays uphill, downhill, and in and around the trees.
-Segregated from most of the parks other activities.*
-Water Hazards that still allow one to retrieve their disc.
-Requires strategic throws and placement. Though the holes can require one to throw in and around many trees, the course is not overly dense with trees.
-Enjoyable for all skill levels. Good for beginners, and can be enjoyed by the advanced player.
-Beings it's a shorter 18, the course does play fast.*
-Front and Back 9 play back to the start, allowing for a "Quick 9" if someone were pressed for time.
-#12 and #17 are two downhill shots that will make one want to empty their bag on.
-Other courses nearby. If you are trying to add one or two more courses to a tight schedule, then Holmes or Gower parks can be an excellent compliment to a round at Timmons.

Cons:

-*There is a ballfield, which if a game is in session may make a couple of the holes difficult to play.
-*Course is fairly short, regarding distance per hole. It is a smaller 18 hole course.
-Twelve is hard to locate. (Up the hill, and across both roads)
-Mando's could be marked a little bigger. I missed one that I didn't notice until after I had thrown.
-Some holes play close to one another. It's just something to watch out for.
-No signs to the first hole. I drove through the parking lot twice, and couldn't find it. (Look for the basketball hoop, next to the ballfields. Then look for the stairs going down)
-Par could probably be brought down a little bit. (I scored a 53 which put me at -16 under par. It looks good, but that's a little to generous! :) )
-Park goers may find themselves wandering in and around the course. (I met a real nice gentleman out walking his dogs in between #11 and #18)

Other Thoughts:

Timmons park had a big fun factor for me. Though it is a smaller/shorter 18 hole course, it was still very enjoyable to play. I would compare it to Earlwood in Columbia, SC, except maybe a little smaller. Timmons had very interesting changes in terrain. Such as #8. It plays uphill to a basket that resides on the side of a very steep hill. Very cool! Though there are plenty of trees to play around, it's not overly dense. Only a couple of holes have a real narrow path through the trees. (16 & 17) If you are in Greenville, then Timmons is a good course to play. You may not get a huge challenge, but you can still have a good time.
No special footwear is necessary, but you will be climbing some hills. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, but it is in the midst of a residential area.

Put on Your Ace Face! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Plays through a wooded park and along a windy stream. You must understand that 85% of the holes are between 175-250 feet, so that said, an intermediate player and above will be looking for many ace and birdie opportunities. This is what makes the course fun. It also has it's share of challenges as the pins are creatively placed near trees and on slopes and near the stream to make approaches and putts interesting. Finally, the course is hilly, and the elevation changes make this truly 3-dimensional.

Favorites are #7, in which the majority of the short fairway is a creek! Holes #12 and 17 are narrow downhill wooded holes that demand accuracy to have a chance at birdie.

Cons:

A couple holes are a bit dangerous - Hole #4 is good & twisty, but blind around a baseball wall to the right, which an unwary pedestrian could emerge from. Also, an overshot on #17 can hit someone in 18' fairway.

Navigation is only (slightly) confusing when looking for tee #12 - just follow "next tee" sign straight up hill across road.

Minor complaint- tee pads were a little short.

Other Thoughts:

I liked the tee signs, but about half were missing. Not a big deal, as the missing ones were usually short enough to guess how long the holes were.

Though this course lacked a true balance of hole lengths, I thought you should look at this as a way of honing your finesse game, and it's marvelous for that. And come on- everybody sure like lots of Ace opportunities!!!

Perkerson & Earlewoods little love child 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of great basket placements and very rooty ground that can make even a great shot kind of iffy.
Great use of land and creeks winding through the park.
Great use of elevation.
Short but not easy.
Legitimate, albeit tight, lines on all holes.
Adequate signage giving you distance and par and an arrow with general direction.

Cons:

Some drop offs from tee pads.
Some funky angles on the tee pads but not in a bad way.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun little course. It was very much like Perkerson park in Atlanta in the way it played around the creek, using it as an obstacle and sometimes as part of the fairway.
It also had some nice elevation changes reminiscent of Earlewood.
Not a lot of huge distance shots here but if you do not have accuracy or line shaping ability you will be hurting. A lot of shots will make you want to try again, over and over until you get it right.
The new 12 is a sweet run, even small arms can park it if they make the tight gap.
17 is one of those where you want to empty the bag of all your putters and if the hill wasn't so steep you would do it again.
8 was like an eagles nest perched on a rocky cliff.
We really had a great time playing this course and understand why the locals enjoy playing it so much.

Great Scenery 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a lovely course to play in the spring/summer. The creek is flowing and the trees are all nice, so if that is part of your experience then it is a plus here. Most holes are on the short side, but you generally have to shape your shot some to get close for a birdie. If you play when the creek is low then you don't have to worry about losing discs (the 1st time I played it was 4 or 5 feet deep, but this last time it was more like 1 or 2 feet). There is a good variety of up and down, left and right holes. A few tight tee shots and a several open holes. This is a nice course to play with friends or just out to throw some discs without having to worry too much.

Cons:

The tees are concrete which is a big plus for me, but they were short, with big drop offs. We were all a little worried about coming off the front edge. I would rather not have the concrete in some cases over the short tee box. A lot of the holes are short which is okay but I could have used a little more length here and there.

Other Thoughts:

The shortness can probably be a big con for some pro players. I usually have been around 4 or 5 over par on other courses, and shot a 1 under here (which was nice).

In my top 10 out of 500+ courses.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 7, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Timmons is a fun, wooded course. It's short and tight, especially on the front 9, meaning good shots are required, but plenty of birdies to be had.
- I love this course. I make no bones about it. Out of my 500+ played courses, this is in my top 10 based solely on the fun factor.
- Front 9 is shorter and more wooded. 8 holes on front 9 are potential birdie opportunities. They play under 250 feet and aren't overly difficult, meaning even a decent shot will give you a birdie putt. Back 9 is longer and tougher, so birdies require more clutch throwing.
- Course takes tremendous use of its terrain. Almost every hole has some use of elevation, making some holes play much shorter & others much longer. Good basket placements make some shots high risk/reward. Creek comes in to play on several holes.
- Course is easy to navigate. There's a giant map on a kiosk by #1, after that I never needed a map. There's one possible confusing transition - after #11's basket, the closest tee is for #13, but there's a sign directing towards #12 tee.
- Good flow to course - #9 ends back at the beginning, so you can easily play 9 holes. No long walks between holes.
- Course seems great for all skill levels. Beginners won't be overwhelmed, and there's still plenty of challenge for advanced players.

Cons:

Course has no major glaring flaws. It seems to be close it to its absolute best.
- Parking lot isn't that big. With a Little League field in the same park, parking may get tough at times.
- Course is in cramped quarters. Some holes/fairways come very close to each other, so need to keep an eye out for other players. For example, my approach shot for #11 sailed past the basket and down a slope, ending up right next to the tee for #13.
- Some of the underbrush is very thick - especially alongside & behind # 5, 7, 8 and in the valley of death near holes #13, 14 & 17.
- Be aware of the awkward transition from #11 to #12. After finishing #11, the closest tee is for #13. To get to #12, you have to cross the park road, walk up half the fairway and then tee off. Better signage here would be helpful.

Other Thoughts:

Timmons reminded of a combination of Glenn Hilton in Hickory, NC (the front 9) & Earlewood in Columbia, SC (the back 9). All three courses are fun, short and hilly.
- Area around the course seems to be nice, especially compared to many other neighborhood park courses that are in sketchy areas. I loved the houses looking down on the course & park. Talk about a great place to live.
- Great layout for hole #8. It's a midrange, uphill shot, with basket on side of hill. Small, flat area around basket, leads to possibility of shots rolling down hill.
- Course could use a couple more long holes (at least 350 ft) that require drivers. #5 is a great hole, and it'd be nice to see more holes like it. Course has 12 holes under 250 feet, 14 under 270.
- This is a must play in my book. One I always play when I'm in this area. Everyone in Greenville, or driving on I-85, needs to stop here and play. You won't be disappointed.
- It's my favorite mid-range course anywhere. In terms of fun factor, it's a 5 for me.

Timmon: My Home 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a great course for practicing for those bigger courses. It really helps a newbie with all aspects of the game. Timmons has short holes, a few semi-long holes, wooded holes.

I really enjoy the elevated challenges such as hole 2, 8, and 17.

Hole 2 is from the top of a small hill, throwing downwards to a catcher right in front of a creek. This hole really helps a player use judgement with their technique. Thrown too soft, youll par rather than birdie. Thrown too hard, your OB.

Hole 8 is thrown from ground level, upwards to the right on a pretty big steep hill. Thrown bad, and you roll down the hill. Thrown correct, the reward could be a birdie.

Hole 17 is from on top of a hill. There is a tight path (formed by trees) to throw down. This hole really helped me with control as far as throwing straight.

Not many chances of losing a disc except for hole 5. Chances are not likely, although I had a buddy who did. You have to throw far to the right to have any chance of losing it.

I like that this has water challenges. Its a great way to learn to use control. Who wants to have to crawl down a creek to get their disc?? Not me.

I like the layout for a smaller course. And for a smaller course, the holes really dont overlap eachother.

I like how when you first walk up, you can start at the front 9 or the back 9. Hole 1 and 10 and side by side but are thrown in two different directions. Nice touch.

A lot of risk with water challenges. I consider this a PRO because it helps improve your game in the long run.
A lot of reward as far as birdy potential).

Cons:

Some of the pars are a little more geared towards beginners. There are 3 par 5s on this course. I play this course atleast once twice a week and play all holes as par 3s. When I first started, having those holes as a par 5 helped. But after you play for a month, you should challenge yourself and play all par 3s.

Hole 12 is a mess. They just cut the path for this hole not too long ago. The clean up crew did a horrible job. You have to walk up a hill with tree roots, stumps, debri. And if it rains the day before the mud of this hole is horrible. Someone should clean that up. Other than that, hole 12 is a hell of a challenge. (Unless you use a thumber or a tomahawk)

Other Thoughts:

Good course to practice on for all skill levels. I play this course a few times to prep for when I go out to some of the harder and bigger courses.

Players here are always really cool. In my experience, most people are willing to give a tip or two if you just ask. A lot of league play here as well.
