A challenging mix 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Great mix of open and wooded holes. You need to be able to throw both "high and smart" and "low and careful" - the trees get you on the wooded holes, and the rough gets you on the open holes.
- They do a lot with a largely flat setting - and have figured out how to incorporate every slight elevation change available.

Cons:

- Signage is getting a bit old and spotty. I hate to see maintenance slip on the small touches. The course is mowed and maintained - so the holes themselves are great. But a little attention to signage and "next tee" arrows would make it even better.

Other Thoughts:

- This is a very good course, and I found myself pushing my rating up the more I thought about how good the holes are.

A rebirth...of teepads! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tinicum is experiencing a face lift! New stone dust pads are being installed on EVERY hole! Completely level & raked (as of mid-late Nov).

And, pin positions are being changed! I have travelled to Tinicum for the past 5+ years, and this was the first time I played #5 to any position not on the hill (it was in the farthest). Nice to see these being rotated more frequently! It makes this a GREAT bomber course when the baskets (especially the back #9) are rotated to the longs at times. There was a long span where the back was only in A or B.

Not only can you bomb you heart out, but the wooded sections require touch, finesse, and accuracy. Long drives on open holes might seem like a free for all, however correct placement does go far.

Power of ~400ft is needed to score on most Par 3s. Great place to experiment with new drivers.

Well-manicured; always see the parks dept. performing land maintenance.

Cons:

If the pins were rotated more frequently, I would play here more often.

At times, high winds can make this course difficult to enjoy. This is moreso true when the rough is long, but it has not been all year!

Other Thoughts:

Now that Tinicum has new teepads (and hopefully, rotated pins consistently), it is on par with Little Lehigh & Jordan once again. It is the definition of drive for show, putt for dough.

Tinicum 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mix of open and wooded holes.Multiple pin placements for each hole gives a good variety of shots for each hole. Fairways where well defined and mowed. Rough area's haven't grown in yet but you could still see that they are in fact the rough.

Seating at just about every hole. Playground for kids, walking path along the canal. Water hazards come into play on a couple of holes, but not many.

Each hole has multiple ways to attack the basket. If you have a roller you can break that out on a few holes, anny shots, hyzer shots....long bombs. Really got to air it out on a few holes, especially 18 which is close to 800' par 4.

Cons:

Some people may feel the holes get repetitive, but I don't think so. Its a nice mixture of open and wooded.

Only negative I could see is the natural tee pads being pretty worn in. Maybe moving them from time to time to prevent them from getting a big rut in the middle of them.

Other Thoughts:

I wanted to see the course before I played it in an upcoming tournament (People's Detour) and really enjoyed the back to back rounds I played. We got their early enough that for the first round we had the course to ourselves so that enabled us to try multiple shots with different type of shots. Second round we noticed a few more people showing up so we played a normal round.

I didn't mind the natural tee's but some seem to be worn in pretty good. I think 3 I tee'ed off from the side. There was a lot of foot traffic and bike traffic along the canal, so I can see that becoming a potential problem while playing 10 and 11.

All in all I really enjoyed the course. Looking forward to this upcoming tournament and later in June.

Befitting Bucks County 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Played this course back-to-back on a beautiful fall day, because we just couldn't force ourselves to leave after 18. Well marked holes with integrated maps and tee location markers at every tee box. Great combination of medium and long holes, as well as open and wooded holes. I defy anyone to play a round without hitting a tree trunk, yet all holes still offer you a chance to play cleanly. 18th hole 799 foot finisher is a challenging par 4 for anyone despite the straight-away layout. Getting there in 3 requires consecutive distance bombers. Fun finish. Large practice hole area near 1st tee, along with restroom facilities is a big plus. Being close enough to Nockamixon or Tyler State Park for high quality same day marathons is a plus.

Cons:

As awesome as this course is, its a real headscratcher as to why the complete lack of quality tee boxes. This is the 1 glaring weakness. Some people complain of the flatness, but since that is definitely a personal preference, I don't hold it against the course. Tee boxes on the other hand, are not a personal preference and are unequivocally a bummer for all players. New concrete pads would easily boost this course rating to over 4.0.

Other Thoughts:

Bucks county in the fall is as pretty as it gets, and this course alongside the Delaware takes full advantage. You may have to search for your discs in the leaves after throwing a low worm-burner during the fall, or wade thru some heavy fairway rough in the fields during the summer. But you'll be doing it in beautiful Bucks county.

Pros:

Manicured fairways in the open fields holes add a feeling of playing on a links course for ball golf it is awesome.
I love natural tee pads but these could use a little TLC. You use ever shot here, makes for a challenging round.
The canal comes into play on various occasions which makes for some touchy upshots and death putts.

Cons:

Hole 7 is a little too tight. I like technical holes but its a little rough off the tee.
Would just like some direction as you get into the park as to where hole 1 is.

Tinicum is the Bomb 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 7, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This place has a 19th Hole for putting
- There is A B and C pin placements
- The signage was pretty good
- The 18th hole was a BEAST
- It was almost like a mini clubhouse between the 9 and 10th hole. There was a parking lot, bathroom, and another practice basket.
- This course is half open, like 5, it's short but uphill and completely open and 18 is open but partly downhill
- You just want to let your discs fly because this course is so great.
- Good dirt tee boxes
- The baskets were terrific
- There was even a marked "fairway" on some holes
- NO garbage on the course
- NO runners that you can hit

Cons:

- I wasn't sure what pin placement it was
- Some holes had long walks to the next one, and it took me 5 minutes to find the tee sometimes
- Some tee boxes were worn away

Grip It and Rip It! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you like to throw big drives, then this is the course for you. It favors players who can throw a 400 ft drive in good control, yet it still does have several technical holes, requiring accuracy and shaping of lines.
* multiple basket locations for each tee
* current location is indicated at each tee by an A-B-C selector and footage/location for each is shown
* locations do change frequently offering some variety to "locals"
* easier walking as most fairways are clear and grassy
* generally open and free from park traffic (though there are several large events here that can interfere)
* well-maintained park - even the open fairways have nice definition
* modest restrooms near first tee, and portalets out by 14.
* The 9th basket is close to the parking lot, creating a true sense of front and back nine, and allows for re-fueling

Cons:

Personal preference plays a role in this.
* very flat - no elevation changes
* par isn't too hard to attain, but birdie is if you are limited in driving distance on most holes
* Rough (grass fields) can get very high in the summer months, making disc locating difficult
* Hole 5 Long requires alot of excess walking.
* Some tees are well-worn and need releveling, a draw back of gravel/cinder tees

Other Thoughts:

Depending on your point of view you may find Tinicum too hard, too easy, or just right. It does favor bigger arms and I found myself throwing either mids or faster drivers off most tees. There are a few low ceiling shots, making use of limited wooded areas.

The wind can be a big factor at Tinicum. The course is very exposed. Even a 10-15 mph wind can create an added challenge as it can tend to change directions around the wooded sections and close the ridge that is the back drop. Suddenly, this too-open, too-easy course gets extremely difficult as drives and upshots blow off-course. I find myself playing a very different game here than at other courses, because of the distance and conditions.

If you are looking to create a little more diversity in your golf outting, I would recommend a round at Tinicum and then head off and play either Nockamixon (20 mins) or Alexandria (10 mins)

My favorite so far 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is great if you like practicing different kind of throws. Each hole requires something a little different for a good drive, and you don't have to worry about having to dig through bushes or head high grass to find misthrows. No hills, which is a positive for me because I always lose discs throwing up or down hills. Half in trees half out, but even in the trees they still give you a solid fairway to aim for.

Cons:

Some holes are grip and rips, where aiming really doesn't matter too much. The tee boxes aren't very distinct, but I'm a pretty nonchalant discer, so it doesn't bother me either way.

Other Thoughts:

I've been playing this course since I was a little kid, and still love it to this day. A couple of the holes are a little boring, but overall, I'd say its the best in the central jersey/PA area.

Wish I would have played it sooner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 17, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tinicum Park has a lot going for it. Located in a beautiful setting, this park is a fantastic DG course.

* Up to four pin positions completely change the way in which you'll approach each hole
* This course is fantastic for big arms. Depending on the pin position, up to 1/3 of the holes are over 500' including the 18th hole at up to 799'
* Holes range from massive, grassy, wide-open fields to tight and densely wooded to some variation in between
* The Delaware canal shows up by the basket of a few of the holes creating several risk vs. reward situations
* The tee signs are awesome. A detailed picture of the hole, pin positions, par, and distances are prominently displayed making it very easy on the player to determine how to approach that hole
* Other than the canal walking path, there were very few non-disc golfers
* The course was clean and the baskets were well maintained
* With the exception of going from hole 4 to 5 navigation was fairly easy

Cons:

There wasn't too much that I could find to ding this course. That being said, there were a few items that could be addressed to bring this course up to a 4.5.

* Tees were mostly gravel and some were in rough shape. Some of the more severely rutted tees have a tendency to collect water after it rains. Rubber tee pads would be one of the bigger upgrades.
* This course is not for those that can't uncork a disc. For those players that have average drives of 250' or less, they'll probably be over par on the vast majority of the holes
* Zero elevation change. Almost totally flat. Sure, as other reviewers have said, it's great on the knees, but it puts too much of an onus on obstacles to keep players on their toes. Because this is a function of the piece of land on which the course resides, there isn't really a way to improve on this. If all the other issues above were addressed, the lack of elevation would continue to keep this course from ever being a 5.0.

Other Thoughts:

This is a LONG, fun course and fits in well with the other world-class courses in the greater Lehigh/Delaware Valley area (Nockamixon, Tyler, Little Lehigh, Jordan Creek). Although I don't know if I'd suggest this course to a beginner, once you've had a chance to cut your teeth playing disc golf, I highly recommend playing Tinicum.

Long, Flat, Beautiful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very good variety - while the course is flat, it does play in the woods, open holes, and moderately wooded/open holes, although the general perception is that it is open

The scenery on this course is stunning (reminds me of Brandywine)

Rotating baskets

Excellent signage (see photos) with accurate distance, next tees, obstacles listed, OB, water fountains, bathrooms, and rotating dials to indicate current placement

Camping on site (call ahead to parks dept.)

Open shots let you see full flight path of discs

Wind adds a level of challenge that many players aren't used to

Several par 4's (long 2,6,17,18) that require you to think

Cons:

Flat - park has no elevation (which does make the course easy on your knees)

Like any course with rotating baskets you are at the mercy of the setup.
Hole 2 is a great challenging par 4 when in the long position which you may miss out on.
Hole 4 is a challenging 247 ft wooded par 3 in the long, or can by a 187 foot, hopefully don't hit a tree to get a bird hole that I don't care for. There always seem to be a good mix of long/short holes, but you may miss out on some holes depending on when you play.

Grass off the fairway can get a little long in the summer making it tough to locate discs

Not much shade from the sun in the summer

Other Thoughts:

This is a beautiful, well maintained course devoted almost entirely to disc golf (I have seen horses running nearby, but not on the course). This course is not too far from Tyler State park, or the Lehigh Valley and should be included in any trip through the area. You will get to test out your arm, but you also better be able to drive through narrow woods. Knowing how to throw in the wind is a must to score well on this course. This course was part of the 2005 worlds and many pros considered it the toughest. While this course is very challenging, it is not very frustrating as it's tough to lose a disc with little underbrush and short grass when mowed.
Note: many locals play hole 5 from the cement path as the distance is about the same as playing from the tee, without a long unnecessary walk.

Long and Tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2000 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long, and well maintained course. Tinicum really makes you play golf. There's no phoning it in here- every hole offers its own challenges. In it's longest configuration, it may be the hardest course I've ever played, even though it's fairly wide open for the most part. On a windy day it's especially difficult. In it's shorter version, it's a bit easier, but it's still a bear of a golf course. It's a lot of fun, but really only for better players. Beginners should probably look elsewhere for more user-friendly environs.

Cons:

It's flat, and there is one hole that is unconscionably tight and penal. It's not a place to go if you need to get in a quick round at lunch, as it's far from anywhere (though easy to find,) and takes pretty long to play. The grass off the fairways can get high in the summer. There is not a great deal of shade. None of this represents any serious flaw- It's a damn good course.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great place for tournament golf- a low score here is not a result of luck, but rather, excellent play. There's plenty of room for other events too, so Tinicum makes a good venue for overall tournaments as well. I'd rate this place higher if it had elevation changes, but it happens to be in a flat park, and there just isn't any place to throw up or down hill.
All in all, it's a course well worth playing, but not for everyone as a day-to-day recreational spot.

very nice flat and long course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tinicum is lynx golf at its best; although
there is very little elavation change, there is plenty here to challenge your game. It is longer than most courses in the region.

A good vareity of shots are required. Every hole is simply not "open". There are some very tight and low ceiling shots required.

Great tee signs with a dial showing you which position the basket is located in.

In early Oct '09, the grass fairways were cut very nicely. The rough is thick grass causing some delays but no lost discs.

The park itself is super clean in a very scenic setting near the Delaware river.

The creek really doesn't come into play unless you throw a lousy shot.

Since it is flat, it is an easy walk.

The gravel tee pads were in decent shape, not many ruts in them.

Cons:

Mostly open and long, you'll be throwing a lot of the same type of shots.

The long walk from 9 to 10, passing 18 on the way.

Other Thoughts:

The 2005 Pro Worlds was played on his course.

Helpful hint, if comimg the from I-95, take 29N in NJ instead of 32N/River Rd
is PA, cross the Frenchtown bridge over the river and go left for 1.3 miles. This is simply an easier drive avoiding one lane bridges and the town of New Hope.

Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signs with maps and dials that show what position the basket is currently in. Course is well maintained, with reasonably wide mowed fairways, baskets in good condition, and for the most part a secure location to tee off from (only a couple holes were too muddy). The wooded holes add nice variety to an otherwise wide-open course.

Cons:

The course would benefit a lot from uniform teepads. It's also a good place to lose a disc if you throw too far off the fairway - the brush can get pretty thick. Definitely bring a spotter for hole 18 if you don't plan on parking it on the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Seemed like an ideal course for my ability level (beginner/intermediate). Had a lot of variety without ever becoming punishing. I liked having a lot of wide open room to throw my driver without needing pinpoint accuracy.

One of the best FLAT courses there is. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2005 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Overall - Tinicum is a very enjoyable course. The park layout is such that it provides exceptional variety to the DGC layout. There are long Open holes, extremely tight technical holes, a few shorter (yet still technical) holes, and some excellent tweener holes that mix the power requirement with the technical requirement - offering the opportunity for creative shot making, rollers, upside down shots, etc.
There is camping ONSITE, which is a big plus, as well as multiple bathrooms, and a nice shelter, and parking in multiple locations.
Tees are natural - but due to its location - the amount of foot traffic hasn't really degraded the natural tees into the ruts you see at many other places.

Cons:

The park administration has put the DGC on the bottom of the priority totem pole, and on several occasions has forced planned tournaments to defer to other park activities like weddings, or polo matches.
Also - as has been mentioned elsewhere, mowing of the big open areas sometimes becomes abbreviated, making mid summer play a little more difficult due to waste high grass.
Location is a little bit of a drawback - as Tinicum is located along the Delaware River maybe 40 minutes north of Philadelphia and 1/2 hr south of Allentown - not really close to much of anything other than a bunch of B&B's (which could also be a PRO - if traveling w/the family)

Other Thoughts:

Tinicum is a favorite of mine for sure - lot's of just really good holes, and ovreall an excellent mix. Joe Mela did a great job with this one. It's sad that the Eric Yetter Memorial no longer plays this course, but with the park conflicts in the past - it's understandable. If planning a visit through NE Pennsylvania - don't pass up Tinicum - it's definitely worthy.
The course may not be the easiest to follow the first time through - as there are a couple spots where the pin and next tee are separated by short walks - but it's not hard at all if you've got a map.

Great course ... well worth playing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tinicum is a fun challenging and well maintained course. The course offers a good blend of open, wooded and semi open/wooded holes. There aren't any extreme elevation changes, but the distance of the course makes up for it. Hole 18 in the c pin position is a challenging 800 footer. (Although this is not the best hole on the course) The canal comes into play on a couple of the holes, including hole 12 where the basket is next to the canal path. My personal favorite holes are 7-9 all in the woods including an extremely narrow fairway, on hole 7, surrounded by pine trees on either side.
The course is extremely well marked and the recent addition of pin location indicators was a much needed upgrade.
There are also restrooms water fountains and picnic areas located on the course. Tinicum also offers camping adjacent to the course for those who are traveling in the area - and there are several excellent courses within 30mins of Tinicum.

Cons:

Some of the tees could use gravel to level them out - they are getting really worn.
Also the park service is sometimes lax in keeping the rough tamed - especially during the summer months.

Other Thoughts:

Due to the course location there aren't many restaurants close to the course.
The park hosts several festivals a year which make the course mostly unplayable.
The locals have turned the practice basket into hole 19 ... but good luck finding the tee marker - I found it entirely by accident this weekend.
This course is a must play if you are in the area playing DG courses.

Solid layout, worth the trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 17, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Excellent variety of holes. Some low canopy shots that reward rollers; short and long; hyzers and anhyzers; wide open shots and brutal gauntlets. 3 or 4 pin positions per hole for variety. The gorgeous 13th hole even has trees, meadow and a canal all in play in under 400 feet. Signs spell out the hole well. Flushing toilets, picnic tables and all the amenities of a state park... plus camping. New markers to tell you the pin position, added sometime in summer of 2008 (and I upgraded my rating to 4 stars to reflect this).

Cons:

Almost no elevation changes as it's in a creek valley. Messy gravel tees with the tee markers often buried. Meadow fairways a bit too narrow, the rough too unkempt for my taste (though meadows were mowed for September play, making it more appropriate rough). Bring plenty of tick spray!

Other Thoughts:

I didn't think hole 18 was all that.. just a long meadow hole with 30 feet of mild trees at the end. Hole 13 and the 7-8-9 gauntlet holes were my faves. The best part was when our novice friend threw her disc into the canal on 12 and we convinced her to go in after it. For those who are wondering, the canal is very muddy, very cold, and very disgusting, but results in great wet T-shirt action. She never found the disc.

Pros:

Well maintained, Excellent signs and plays long. Also, there were trash cans at a lot of tees which definitely helps with potential litter issues.

Cons:

#9 was unmarked and it took us a while to figure out where to throw from. Otherwise, none!

Other Thoughts:

This course reminds me of Baker Farm in Chili, NY. Both are relatively flat although Tinicum offers more hole variety than Baker as several holes play through some wooded/lightly wooded areas. There is also a canal with some very soft mud on the banks (don't ask how I know that :) ) that may come into play on a couple of holes.

Overall I really enjoyed playing this course and would recommend it to anyone that's passing through the area.

Nice course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 24, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 hole course with baskets in very good shape. Course mixes a nice number of open holes with wooden holes and a few very tight fairways. A few different pin layouts are available, with the shorter ones being birdie runs and the longer layouts will challenge your ability to both long drive and long approach. Canal behind a few of the holes does offer an additional challenge in not overthowing a shot. Well maintained. Very little in the way of elevation, but whatever is there is utilized well.

Cons:

Tees are natural, so in wet conditions or melted snow (winter) they are practically unplayable. This is probably the biggest con here. If you like elevation, you'll find it, but not as one of the holes. It is a hill across the canal, sorry. 7 and 13 are close to being pinballesque, not as much a con, but not a pro either.

Other Thoughts:

Can't complain. The BCDGA does a great job and locals maintain it well. I am glad I got back here to Tinicum for the first time in 2 1/2 years. Worth the drive from the Valley.
