Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Discatchers, catch exactly how they should. There seems to be some alternate pin positions as well so thats nice.

+ Great teesigns. They show you everything you need and will help you navigate to the correct tee for the layout you are playing.

+ Multiple concrete tees. I had zero issue with these tees outside of one being completely covered with sand. Other than that they were great.

+ Multiple layouts available. The color guide for which tee to play can get a bit annoying at times but it would be fun to have the time to play all the layouts that this course has to offer. You can go from playing an easier short course to a difficult long and technical course. You can play whatever layout your mood is in.

+ Wooded and Open. I would say that the course is mainly wooded with a few open holes. This style makes the woods not feel so bad because there are opportunities to get out of the woods and breathe a bit.

+ Mid and Fairway course. This style of course is what I prefer. Throwing a lot of controlled mids and fairways in the woods is the most fun to me. Getting to see the disc weave throughout the fairway is one of the most beautiful things to me

Cons:

- Navigation was a bit of an issue as a first timer. Without uDisc it would be hard to find your way around. I think you could be fine without it but your round will take a while as you and Dora the Explorer go on an adventure.

- The course was a bit muddy when I was there and it hadn't rained for a bit so I'm not sure if this is a normal thing or not but when I was there, I didn't find a way to stay mud free. Boots will be with Dora on this adventure.

- Hole 15 would be one that would be hard to find. It kinda seemed like an afterthought. Its off of the area where the rest of the course is by a little bit. Once you do find it you are set up for the worst hole on the course imo. Its just a really tight and awkward short hole next to the train tracks. I felt very claustrophobic on the tee and was happy when the hole was done. This might just be a tall person problem, or a me problem, but it's a tight one.

- The first and last 3 holes play near the parking lot and a pretty heavily trafficked area for pedestrians and others who are enjoying the park. As long as you aren't an idiot it shouldn't be an issue but those holes are set up for failure. They are still fun to play but are a bit more dangerous

- Hole 18 is a bit of a let down. I always like to see hole 18 play as a fun or difficult hole to finish out the round. Hole 18 here is just a short little pitch and putt hole throwing too close to a playground. This course has a lot of good holes but this one is a let down for sure.

Other Thoughts:

Tom Triplett is a better than average course. With that being said, there is nothing remarkable about it. If I lived in the area I would probably have this course in my normal rotation. You need a fair bit of skill to complete the course and shoot well but you will also need a bit of luck on some holes. This is definitely a course that will favor the more accurate thrower over the power player.

There wouldn't be a signature hole in my eyes, maybe one of the two water carry holes but only because you throw over water. Other than that, the course seemed to all mesh together in my mind. I just remember a lot of holes in the woods where you have to hit the one line that is available. Theres nothing wrong with that, I just like to see a little bit more choices available to you off of the tee.

If you are in the area I would consider playing this course. It's nothing that you have to travel out of the way to but if you stop here you will not have a bad time.

Interesting Course, Nice Mix 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

I had heard about Triplett several times from friends who live/travel the Savannah area often and when I found myself in the general area I made the trip to give it a shot.

As is often the case the course sits in a nice multi use park that has a really long walking path, which is busy and in play at times, tennis courts and a well worn disc golf track.

Hole one starts near the community center type building near tennis courts, which are on your right coming into the park. You will see a practice basket marked #11, don't let that throw you, your in the right place. Just beyond that hole number one lies.

There are usually three teepads with notations for I believe 5 total layouts they range from red the shortest, to gold the longest. I played blue, which was in the middle(and the first one that I found) and since I ended up getting rained on a lot it made me glad that I played that one.

The baskets are Innova disccatchers and are not new but mainly in pretty good shape with just a few slightly bent cages here and there.

The pads themselves are not overly large but we're really grippy even though it was super wet. I was a fan overall.

The terrain of the course is really interesting, a lot of mixed woods with very tight but attainable lines and a really nice mix of classic southern trees line pines, oaks and magnolias along with palmettos and other coastal scrubs that can clutter your low routes. But though the trees are tight they aren't overly dense so you usually have a route out.

The first few holes are not overly long 200-330 in the wooded area and then number 5 is a monster par 5 with the lake all along the left side and an elevated basket. You basically need to throw a turnover or sidearm 300ft or more with a hard right fade to stay dry and I felt lucky as my drive shredded through the rushes on the edge of the lake. Got the birdie 4 thanks to a nice approach and felt good about that.

A couple more open holes follow and then you dive back into the woods with a lot of hit your line hyzer holes as well as a few fun little right fading shots that give you a shot to use skips and fun lines.

Another hole that stood out was 16, which isn't terribly long but possibly the tightest tunnel I've ever played.

With the woods, water and elements like the elevated baskets, and interesting lines I really liked it.

There were some signs missing but the ones they do have are great and make navigation on the hole level a breeze.

There are also benches on almost every teepad, which is a great touch as it seems to get busy.

Cons:

This is a good course, but it's not perfect and the main issue I had was navigating it. In the back, where some construction has apparently taken place in particular it's hard to find some tees(if they all even exist at this point) and there are a few long walks that I couldn't see where to go for a while.

Several signs were missing, and the area around many of the baskets holds a good amount of water, so if you were putting inside 20, you were getting wet.

There are just a few holes like 13 and 18 where errant throws are taking you near or over heavily trafficked areas, so safety could possibly be an issue on busy days.

I saw a couple of snakes too so be careful.

Other Thoughts:

This course has a lot of top notice design and features that make it a super fun play, but enough issues to keep it from being an elite course.

It seems like it is well loved and by far the most highly rated within 50 miles, and for good reason.

Even with the issues, the fun factor is super high.

No idea when I will get to play it again, but I already want to. I'd also love to try all of the layouts and see how they play differently.

Definitely worth your time, even if you have to play most of your round in the rain like I did.

Great course dealing with construction mess (when I played) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 6, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tom Triplett is a well-designed course for players of all skill levels with Rec, Intermediate, and Advanced tees, plus a few extra tees for pros and levels in between. Unfortunately, at least when I played, there was park construction going on, plus sogginess due to recent rain, and 2-3 holes were unplayable. Still, if you live in the area or you're passing through on I-95, Tom Triplett is worth the trip.

+ Three sets of tees on each and every hole with five total layouts to choose from (in order of length/difficulty; white, red, blue, black, gold). There is a white, blue, and gold tee on every hole. The red layout shares tees with either white or blue, depending on the hole. The black layout shares tees with either blue or gold on each hole. The tee pads are also flat and an adequate size and shape.

+ Helpful tee signs for each of the three sets of tees, with color coding matching tee signs to tees. The tee signs have a picture of the hole layout, markings for each tee, and yardage for each tee.

+ The hole designs are varied -- left to right, right to left, and straight -- with lengths ranging from 119-512 feet from the white tees, 155-750 feet from the blues, and 184-959 from the golds. The white layout has one par 4 (the 512-foot #4). The blue layout makes hole 4 a 750-foot par 5, par 56 for the course. The gold layout has eight par 4's and one par 5 for a total par of 64.

+ The hole lengths are appropriate for the widths of the fairways. The four sub-200-foot holes for the white tees are all very narrow and technical fairways...and aces are very possible, as well as bad kicks and scrambles to make par. The longer holes have wider fairways. And the longest hole, the par 4, is wide open.

+ The setting of the park, with the course wrapping around the lake, following the paved greenway, is really pretty. A fawn watched my son and I putt out on hole 9. Lots of birds and other wildlife. The lake and park itself are aesthetically pleasing and well-maintained.

+ This is a fun, yet challenging course. Lots of different shots required. And if you get bored or feel like the challenge isn't stiff enough, just step up to a longer tee!

Cons:

- The biggest con for me on the day I played was the construction mess in the middle of the course. We couldn't even find holes 7 and 8. I'm not sure if they were taken out due to park construction or if the big muddy area just forced us to walk the wrong way and we missed these holes. Then, coming back on the back 9, we missed hole 13. We saw the basket and what remains of its fairway, but no tees. Our shoes got caked in mud walking between holes 12 and 14. It's just a mess out there right now. Hopefully, the course will dry out quickly and the construction projects will be completed so the course can get back to normal.

- The way the course is laid out, playing out and then doubling back along the lake, makes for some holes in close proximity to each other and other park amenities (namely, the greenway). Watch out for other players and park goers and follow your map to make sure you're walking to the correct hole.

- This is a personal pet peeve, but I wish all courses conformed to the PDGA color coding standards for courses. My son and I set off on the white layout, thinking this was the intermediate track. It turns out, white is Rec on this course and red is Intermediate. The black layout is also mislabeled here. In my humble opinion, all courses should try to conform with this standard:

Green = Novice (par = 780-830 rating)
Red = Recreational (par = 830-880 rating)
White = Intermediate (par = 880-930 rating)
Blue = Advanced (par = 930-980 rating)
Gold = Pro (par = 980-1030 rating)
Black = Super Pro (par = 1030+ rating)

Other Thoughts:

Tom Triplett is a fun and challenging course that has something for all skill levels. Hopefully, the construction mess can be taken care of soon. Honestly, the track was not in 3.5-level shape when I played. It was more like a 3.0. But I could tell that under ideal conditions, it was likely a 4.0-level track in terms of fun, challenge, and design. I split the difference and gave it a 3.5. Definitely worth the stop off of I-95!

Pros:

I liked this course. It has water and wooded holes. You will be able to get sun as you are playing. They have scorecards and pencils which is rare!

Cons:

There is too much I would say in regard to the course. We enjoyed the park settings along the water and in the woods. I do have one thing to say. if you are on the back nine in the wooded area, be cautious of the tall trees falling. We saw two trees snap and fall hard.

A little something for everyone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Kiosk/Mailbox at #1 stocked with scorecards/course map & a practice basket!!
- Course starts and ends right near the parking lot
-Three different tees on every hole with great tee signs at each
-Course is pretty easily navigable with the next tee signs and decent walking paths guiding you along the way. Only had to use the map twice to confirm where I needed to go around holes 13-15.
- Mix of Wooded and Open holes
-Unique pin placement, particularly on #4 and #15
-Benches available at almost every hole.

Cons:

-Tee pads were a little disappointing The concrete ones were a little too short and some of the rubber/carpet/natural ones were on pretty uneven ground.
-Course is mostly flat but it's not major negative, although many areas still had standing water from rain a few days before I played. I couldn't play 14 because it was almost totally under water.
- #18 is a little too close to the playground. I experienced other park users wandering around the fairway not realizing they were on the course.
-Quite a few blind shots to the basket from some tee pads, more than I prefer during a round, but with the great signs at every hole it adds to the challenge.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really great course in a nice little park. This course has great re-playability with the three different tee pad choices, you get 3 quite different approaches to each basket. The harder tee boxes are a lot more than just added distance to the easier tees. The holes in the wooded areas offer quite the challenge with tight fairways lines and heavily wooded rough areas. The more open holes had a very different challenge with the lake and paved paths as out of bounds. The signs and path to the next tee were pretty good. The toughest holes to find from the previous holes were 13-15 but with the map they were easy enough to find. This was a really well maintained course. I expected the tee pads to be a little better quality than they were, but they were all easily recognizable with the wooded colored posts. Overall I enjoyed my round at this course and I would definitely play the course again. It offers a great variety for all different skill levels of player.

Tom Triplett has something for everyone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful park with a proper balance between open, semi-wooded, and densely wooded holes. The course is right on the right side as soon as you come into the park entrance so very easy to find hole 1 and get started.

Hole 7 brings you into the woods and from there until hole 14 you have that sense of peaceful seclusion which I always appreciate.

Multiple tees with good separation providing excellent diversity in play ability by skill level.

Tee signs are adequate. I had no issues with navigation. I had glanced at the map online before leaving my hotel which may have helped, but otherwise I never got lost or ended up in the wrong place. It seemed like most next tees are visible from the previous basket and the course had a nice flow to it and the holes have good separation from one another.

The holes all seemed fair and challenging with the only debate being hole 15 which is a little tighter than I would prefer to see on a filler hole.

Cons:

Nothing major.

Might not be too big of a deal for some, but I'm not a fan of natural tees but these are adequate even though it was wet and a little muddy. I would still prefer concrete but if you are used to natural tees these are as good as any.

If your local courses loop back after 9-holes like most of mine do, it becomes something you notice on courses that don't. Tom Triplett does not loop back so remember to bring what you need with you for the entire round.

There seems to be lacking a true signature hole, but for the most part its not too big of a deal since most of the holes are pretty solid anyways.. just no real "wow" factor that I can recall.

Other Thoughts:

I was there at the crack of dawn and had the whole course to myself. It was drizzling the entire round so not many pedestrians either. I didn't see another disc golfer until I was walking to hole 15 and someone was putting on hole 4. I encountered a couple of young deer foraging in the woods just off the fairway in the area of holes 8 - 10. That was pretty cool.

Normally I wouldn't feel fair reviewing a course in which I played the entire round in the rain, but in this case I made an exception because A) the light rain was annoying but bearable and once I got in the woods it was more like getting dripped on than actual rain. B) I was actually shooting a great round from blue tees and I think most disc golfers would agree that when you are playing well, most other things such as the weather don't necessarily detract from the experience as much as they would if shooting bad. I had a good time here despite the relentless drizzle.

Savannah has a great course here and I would certainly recommend it to anyone passing through. I know I will be back someday for sure!

Triplett 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The many tee boxes per hole allow players to chose the challenge level they want to play. Playes in a free park with restrooms by parking area. Some water carries from long tees by a large lake. Short tees play along side of lake but no over water carries for the beginners. A small ravine may hold water on 18 adds fun and challenge to finish. Great mix of some tricky open shots with water or o.b. and tight woods.

Southern hospitility. Although we were a group of 3 plus a dog slowing us down a group of 4 playing leagues let us play through and later kept us on course when we were about to make a wrong turn.

Cons:

Rubber tees were very slippery after only a short light sprinkle. No indication of next tee area on some holes.

Other Thoughts:

No indication here that dogs are not permitted. Dogs are allowed in the park. However, they are strict about dogs not being allowed in the d/golf & other common areas in the park. The park care taker saw we were from out of state and allowed us to keep dog by road during first few holes in shared area and then told us when we get to woods not to worry.

Triple T(r)ees at Triplett 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 22, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice course in a busy, well maintained, multi-use park.
• Variety: Reasonable mix of fairway shapes and lengths. Predominantly well to very well-wooded, but starts out with a few lightly wooded and semi-open holes to let you warm-up. Provides at least a few chances to use most shots in your repertoire.
• Pretty solid design for the most part. The very little elevation present is used to its potential to provide rollaway potential on a couple of holes. Water in play on a 1+ holes (depending on the tees you play from).
• Equipment: Tees and baskets were all in good condition.Nice signage (graffiti free!) and scorecard/maps keep you moving the right direction. Except for a few spots that are a bit confusing, routing/navigation is pretty good for the most part - I was able to finish my round without much trouble. Regardless of the good signage, be prepared to walk a few fairways to spot blind baskets and find the line you want to take.
• 3 separate tees for every hole sometimes offer different looks, sometimes only change distance. Interestingly color coded to provide up to 5 pre-defined lay-outs to accommodate varying skill levels and variety. Seems more confusing at first than it actually is (see Other Thoughts).
• Little underbrush to obscure discs (and leaves weren't as big a problem as I've seen on other well wooded courses).

Cons:

• Holes 8 (blue) and 15 seem rather poke'n'pray'ish, with scores being due more to luck than to skill... 15 particularly so. I'd say it was just a throwaway hole to connect 14 and 16, but it doesn't even do that job well - simply doesn't fit in at all.
• Terrain is quite flat. Kudos for making good use of it where possible to create some rollaway potential on 4 and 6, but elevation simply makes courses more interesting to play IMO.
• Some nice water carries from a couple of the longs, but I'd have liked to seen a couple of the short/med tees bring the water into play as well.
• While the holes have varied shapes and lengths, they lack decent variety in terms of fairway type, and begin to feel a bit repetitive towards the end of a round. The longest set of tees provide a couple more chances to air it out on the water carries. Fairly well executed overall, but nothing really stood as exceptional and while it's a good course, it simply didn't leave me with any real desire to return.

Other Thoughts:

If finesse is your game, Triplett might be your cup of tea, but if grip'n'rip is your idea of fun round, stay away - Triplett will have you playing lumberjack.

5 color coded "layouts": 3 sets of tees are color coded to accommodate five different skill levels; white is always the easiest, blue in the middle, and gold offers the most challenge. In actuality, there are no additional tees for "Red" or "Black" layouts. Red is simply a pre-defined mix of short and medium tees to to provide an intermediate challenge, while black is a similar pre-defined mix of med and long tees offering a more advanced challenge. Hence, they've created 5 pre-defined, color-coded "layouts" to accommodate varying skill levels using 3 sets of tees. This could be useful for standardizing scores for local league play and tournaments.

Reasonably well executed for the most part, I'd say any of the individual layouts is good as a stand-alone course (3.0), and feel 3.5 is in order given the variety afforded by the 2 extra sets of tees, but think the course falls a bit short of excellence.

I don't necessarily regret stopping here, but can't help but wonder if my time on the road wouldn't have been better spent playing a different course. Triplett seems like it'd be great for league play, but didn't quite strike me as a destination worthy course.

That said, it's only 2 miles off I-95, so it's incredibly convenient to add to your courses played list if you're passing by.

Snakes!

Not as many memorable holes as at The Sarge, Trophy Lakes, Honey Creek, and W.R. Jackson course in Appling, but still challenging enough.

awesome layout and design! three tee pads catering to all levels of play! i played all three tees; golds 60, blues 48 and whites 47! scorecards at the main station with a map on the back. loved the main sign with the history of the course with all those who contributed. the course looked really groomed in the grassy areas not so much in the wooded areas-

Cons:

tee pads blew. some were rubber, carpet, and natural that all needed help. really loved the carpet but it looked a little ghetto- there were no next tee signs to help navigate---thank goodness for the map on the back. i would never have found some of the tee pads. there were tee signs but some of the distances were way off- #15 in particular. speaking of 15, the entire hole looked forced (design lingo) but there looked like an outside tee which was really neat (just a marker) then there was the gold tee that looked totally out of sink with the rest of the layout. it was so worng they even had to have a double mando to justify it. not enough trash cans-trash and dead limbs in the wooded areas. they had three tees but 5 markers. i'm guessing it was a mixture but you have to ask why! it was confusing.

Other Thoughts:

i've heard alot about the course and was excited to play esp. after a long drive-it's right off I95. tee pads were the biggest let down. i took .5 off my score for that, .25 for lack of next tee signs, and .25 off for trash and dead limbs in the wooded areas. looked like the county cut the grass and nobody groomed the wooded areas...?
a note to whoever controls the course, keep it simple! 5 markers on your tee pads?? stick with three and rate them accordingly, get signage that informs you not confuses.
all in all i would rec. the course esp. for those traveling-just get a score card with the map on the back to get where you need to go.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

3 Tee pads per hole change the course a good deal. There is a nice mixture of open long holes and shorter tighter wooded holes. There are 2-3 holes where water can come into play. The holes that play through the woods are well laid out so you need both accuracy and distance to birdie any hole. There is enough shade to stop and cool off in the heat of the summer.

Cons:

Lost a disc in the water on 4. Not really the course's fault though. When it says par 5 don't try to get there in 2 you might no make over the water as I didn't.

Other Thoughts:

There could be some more maintenance done to keep the signs in better shape. The locals I ran into let me play with them the first round and showed me where the pins were when they were blind shots. I would recommend this course to anyone going up I-95 past Savannah as the course is only 3 minutes from the interstate.

When in Savannah... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 11, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is the first course I ever played, and it made me want to play more. It also frustrated me because I lost my shiny new disc in the lake on #4. That pretty much sums up the course: it is full of interesting and tricky holes. (I love #15.) The tees are not concrete, but they're flat and (mostly) well marked. The signs are fine, and benches are at most holes. The locals are friendly and, if you can take the summer heat in Savannah, the course will challenge you without exhausting you. The alternate tees do not just add distance, they add major risk/reward decisions.

Cons:

Mosquitoes the size of airplanes. I could actually hear the impact when they landed on my bag. You should bring a servant to carry Citronella buckets if you play near dusk. Any other cons are minor: some alternate tees are hard to find. There are few trash cans. Some of the tees and signs are worn, and some fairways can get marshy when it rains (which exacerbates the mosquito issue).

Other Thoughts:

I try to play this course whenever I visit Savannah. For other visitors: it's a 20 minute drive from the touristy part of Savannah. Give yourself some extra time. Also, in a town crammed full of spacious parks, this is the only course - lucky thing it's a good one.

Grass tees. Hard to put in words, but the course just didn't wow me.

Other Thoughts:

I lost my favorite disc on #4 in the lake. Not the course's fault though.
