Tom Triplett

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes with multiple tees on every hole and DIScatcher baskets with a neat course logo band that are in good condition. Tee signs on every hole and are accurate. Course is fairly wooded, but not hopelessly tight (except 15). After a couple of wooded holes to start, you're treated to a very open hole with water on the left and OB road to the right. After a somewhat also open 5 and 6, you're back in the woods for a while. Hole 13 is the last somewhat open hole, unless you play 14 from the longs. A few longer holes mesh well with the par threes Triplett has to offer. Navigation wasn't too hard. Good variety of backhand/forehand and tunnel shots, along with the aforementioned open holes. Amenities on site as well.

Cons:

Two big things stuck out to me the most: hole 13 was unplayable from the long pad because people parked on the road that splits the drive and approach. You may find the same issue on 8, but I played the short pad, which was fine.

The other one was hole 15, which plays right next to active railroad tracks. While I played from the short pad here and had no issues, I could see it being a problem from the longer pads.

Other Thoughts:

This was a nice break from my long drive up from South Florida to North Carolina, and with its easy access to both I-95 and I-16, right off US 80, it's very much worth your time if you're driving through or if you're planning a visit to Savannah. Now I visited in the fall, and it was not muddy or buggy when I played, but I could imagine it would be in the midst of summer. Just something to keep in mind. I'd definitely play here again if I passed by.

Excellent tournament-level course

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Triplett is a very pretty course with good length and with a variety of hole designs. Holes 1, 2, 3, 16, 17, and 18 are in a larger-than-it-looks grove of trees (definite woods, not parkland). Signature and longest hole no. 4 is along the lake, fully open with an elevated basket you dare not run (most of us anyway). There is a hole 5A in the woods over the road from the basket of 5 and the tee of 6. Number 6 (open) seems to be sitting on top of an earthen dam for the lake. You go back in the woods with nos. 7 through 15. Number 13 is the transition hole back to the side of the park where you started. It starts with a narrow tunnel you throw through from an open pad; the green is open and sits at the base of the earthen dam. Holes 14 and 15 are back into the woods, the former parallel to hole 5 and the latter on the same side of the roadway as 5A. There are two or three pads per hole and one basket. There's a walking path around the big lake that is quite popular, so there are lots of other folks around walking, running, biking, fishing. You might feel a bit isolated on holes 9 and 10, but not the others. There's a dog park near holes 7 and 8. The park office has very decent bathrooms and a large pavilion. There is another set of restrooms at the tee of no. 13 (third set further back in the park away from the disc golf course). I played the course 5 times during my time in Savannah: two practice rounds before a 3-round tournament.

Cons:

It can get muddy in places as the course is distinctly flat. Number 15 is just a tad too gimmicky. It has half-fallen, slanted trees down its fairway to throw through. I appreciate that helps keep folks off the railroad tracks (the fairway is parallel to active railroad tracks), but it would be better IMHO to move hole 15 away from the tracks altogether and do away with that serious hazard. Perhaps make hole 5A permanent as the new no. 6, and then renumber everything else. 5A plays very well as it is right now with a thick, "close to pad" tree to get around at first and the basket distinctly over to the left. Yes, disc golfers walking from current 14 (potentially, the new 15) will certainly be walking into the eyeballs of nos. 4 & 5 players. All the non-golfers are anyway, you know. And the long tee of 5 is already interrupted with the current design. That's just a suggestion, designers, and (no doubt) you have been thinking about this. Why not make it happen? I also appreciate that this resorting of holes would make for a very long walk from new 15 to current 16, but we have to walk it anyway (one way or the other).

Other Thoughts:

It's a popular and busy course in good weather. Seems like if you want to have it quiet, you probably need to not be there weekends and holidays. Maybe not Thursday and Friday afternoons either. It is very pleasant to play in the wintertime (such as wintertime is in Savannah), but I suspect a little dicey in warm months when the snakes and the alligators are out and about. Though I am not a local, the locals made that plain to me. Something to think about if you too are scared to death of such. This is the South too, so it has to be bug heaven in the summertime.

Great course, great scenery 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tees, up to 4, on every hole. A mix of tee surfaces, but all were in good shape. Some tees were combined on one pad (White/Red) but there are at least 3 different looks on each hole.
Baskets are in good shape.
Good mix of left and right shaped holes, really no elevation here (except for #4) so this gets your variety, along with short, ace runs and long holes.
Three open holes, including #4, which gives you a break from the woods, even if they are early in the round.
Good tee signs showing all tee positions.
Nice building, with restrooms, right at the start. Pretty easy to get to off I95 with plenty of retail along the way.
Worn in rough shows this course is played a lot and not hard to find your plastic.

Cons:

Some interference with walkers on paved path.
The first 3 and last 3 feel a little tight, but you have to use that area to get around the lake.
For those of you that like water carries (me not included), this course doesn't use the lake much. #14 Blue and Gold tees have a huge carry and #4 is along the lake, but it can be avoided. For those of you that don't like water carries, this is a PRO!
#13 long tees have to hit a spot, then turn 90 degrees to follow the fairway.
#18 was a short, lackluster finishing hole.

Other Thoughts:

I am very glad I made the drive to play Tom Triplett on my visit to Hilton Head Island. It was about an hour drive, but well worth it for the variety, playability and scenery as this course circles the lake, then goes back around. Plus, it was my first GA course.
Most of the holes were wooded, but the lines seemed fair to me and the rough was manageable. You do have to hit your line on these fairways, several different shots are needed. A few holes had dual fairways, so you can take your pick.
My favorite holes:
#4 - long, open, elevated fairway, lake along the left side, and a couple of ravines to cross to the elevated basket. Really good looking hole.
#10 - depending on the tee, a variety of fairways to use.
#15 - VERY tight tunnel hole, along what looks like a very active rail line. I'd hate to play that with a train going by.
It looks like the local group is pretty active, judging by a posted schedule of events here and nearby at The Sarge. The next tee signs were very appreciated.

A peach of a course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 31, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was passing through to spend a couple of days in Savannah for a mini getaway. If there is a course within 25 miles I'll always stop and play. The park is peaceful and the weather was perfect on my playthrough. We played red tees and I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of shots required. This course has multiple cement tee pads for each hole that actually make each hole dramatically different depending on which pads you play. You could play two rounds from different pads and it would feel like a different course each round. Each hole is well marked with good signage and the pedestrian interference was minimal.

Cons:

If you are a person that gets easily frustrated at wooded courses, this might not rate as highly for you as a fair number of holes are tree laden. There aren't too many negatives about this course IMO.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I would rate this course a 3.75 but I rounded up instead of down as not to lower the score and make someone skip this course. I hit the short sidearm shot on hole 3 and got myself an ace which is always a bonus especially on a new course. You could say Justice was served. This course is scenic, relaxing and perfect in January when the weather is cool. There isn't much walking in between most holes which could be a pro or con depending on the type of course you fancy. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone has tried to skip off a passing train on hole 15 from the long tee. If you are passing through town or live within an hour of this course, you have no excuse not to stop and enjoy a round.

Tom Triplett DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Has practice basket

Has concrete tee pads for all tees

Has tee signs

Has many benches throughout course

Has some mandos throughout

Has an elevated basket

Has next tee signs posted throughout

Course flows pretty well except for between holes 14&15

More wooded than open fairways with doglegs - which will be challenging to the casual player

Water comes into play on a few holes but holes #4 and #14 are the only ones that are really a factor in losing a disc

Challenging, long course with variety of pars

Well-maintained

Free parking

Restrooms

Water fountain

Cons:

Safety issues - course has a few holes that play near the walking path and park's amenities

Walking path cuts through on some holes - one can expect some delays on a nice day

One has to cross hole #5 fairway after finishing hole #14

Course is mostly flat

Course can get crowded at times as it's popular with parkgoers and players

Other Thoughts:

This a nice, challenging multi-use 18 hole city course in Pooler that I enjoyed playing on a cloudy Saturday morning. The many trees that are scattered throughout the course reminded me to keep my drives in control while playing from the blue tees. The concrete tee pads are not flush with the ground and may fall a little on the short side for those with a long run up. Most holes have tee pads positioned differently from each other in that each offers a different line to the basket. This is a well-maintained course and I can see how this course can get crowded with other players and parkgoers. Some of the holes play fairly close to the park's amenities and walking path so that potentially can cause some concern in safety and delays depending on how busy the park is. The course is mostly flat but so is the surrounding area. Other than that, it's an excellent course to play. If you're in this area, I highly recommend playing this course as it's a fun one to play.

- Close to I-95 so easy to stop and get a round in when passing through the area.

Cons:

- Lots of people walking near or on the course so be careful not to hit anyone.
- A few of the next tees are difficult to find due to not being clearly marked.

Other Thoughts:

This was an enjoyable course to play. It was very pretty. There are a few holes that have tight fairways through the trees but most of the wooded holes are pretty open.

Pros:

This course is well maintained, very fun, very challenging, and offers a variety of tees for every level of player. I played from the Championship tees and found myself getting my butt kicked halfway through. It was definitely more challenging than it looked on the walk up. The course is really well designed and offers a lot of variety from hole to hole.

Cons:

Some holes are ridiculously hard. I played from the championship tees, but even still... damn

Pros:

This course is set around a very nice park and lake. 90% of the holes are spread out under tree canopy. With multiple pads offering technically challenging drives. Not only is the course layout great but it is also well maintained and cared for. Fairways are clean and vegetation is maintained. Pads are well kept in good working order. Plenty of "Next Hole" direction signs to keep you on track and benches with current whole layout signs at every pad. There is a great map at the first hole showing the course layout and a spot to return lost discs.

Cons:

Due to the course being set in a forest atmosphere near water i would recommend you bring your bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

As I travel the nation for work I attempt to play one course in every new city I hit. This course will forever be remembered. Well done Tom Triplett!

Solid course - well designed 2+ years drive by

Pros:

I play the course when visiting Savannah. Always enjoy coming back and playing. Playability is enhanced by the different tee pads available on each hole. Longs are very tough - shorts precise.

Excellent variety of shots - tough alleys on many.

Always well maintained - flat course w/some rubber tee pads but most have plenty of room to find good footing. Georgia sand/trees/heat/insects so come prepared depending on time of year.

Signage/parking/facilities are all solid. Well used park but never posed a problem for me.

Nice running walking trail and lake for fishing if there are non-discers in your group.

My Local Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Every hole has 3 different ways to play giving a lot of shot variety and variable play experiences depending on the format you choose. Good mix of wooded and open shots. Baskets are reachable from most pads (except some Gold) making for several long fun ace runs. Nice park with gorgeous sunsets over the lake. The occasional train passing on hole 15 makes for a fun experience. The local club does a good job keeping up the course and providing several weekly events open to everyone.

Cons:

Tee pads are a concern on several of the holes. Some pads are slick and dangerous while other pads have drop offs right in front and could cause potential twisted ankles. Baskets are solid, but showing age. Hole 6 basket is slowly leaning down hill and needs to be reinforced.

Other Thoughts:

New information board and disc drop box would be nice improvements. Hole 18 can be tricky with park visitors/children wandering the fairway, so be careful before you throw. New tee pads and this course is a 4.5-5 all day. Bring bug spray and watch out for snakes in the summer. Hole 14 can be a swamp after a hard rain.

Enjoyable 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Played this course early in the morning during a week with a heat wave going through the south. I liked how there is a great deal of parking near by and a disc catcher practice cage near hole 1. Had a very nice kiosk also.

Plenty of benches and trash cans

I played the reds (since it was hot as hell and I was on a family vacation). I found the layout to be a fun but challenging layout. Most pads were concrete pads but some were a carpet type that still had great grip. I noticed on most holes they had next tee signs that were fairly large. GREAT tee signs, some of the best I've ever seen.

Course had a good flow to it which ends at the parking lot/hole 1 area. First 3 holes were in the small patch of woods along the lake. Then it got to a few straight holes of wide open shots with tons of road and path OB in play. Made for a great challenge. It went into wooded holes after that. Tons of ace runs on the course. This is a course that will make you use every shot you have at some point.

Cons:

Got lost after 13 and finally found 14 near hole 5 pad in the woods. Never found hole 15 though. Still curious where it was. But from 14 to 16 it was a longgg walk back towards the last 3 holes near the parking lot

Only safety issue I had on the entire course was hole 18. There was an older couple in a gazebo to the right of the tee box, I gave warning before throwing but it still made me nervous if a grip lock or bad kick would occur. Also, long of 18 is a playground, luckily with it being hot and kinda early kids weren't there.

Other Thoughts:

I thought this was a great course. Good flow for the most part and a lot of fun holes. Course was well taken care of. Very glad I could break away for a hour or two to play this course. If you're ever in the area it's a must play!

Love this course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a little bit of everything. You go from moderately wooded areas to open throws. Then you go to water hazards to dense wooded areas. The signing on this course is present and very clear to understand. You don't get lost because signs tell you right where to go for the next hole. Even in the hot summer there is enough trees to block out the sun most of the holes keeping it less hot.

Cons:

The big lake that is there can be a beast. Hole 4 will eat up your discs if you swing them to far to the left. Also the basket for hole 4 has a lot of bees around it. I would recommend playing a different target for that hole unless you like braving the swarm of bees by the basket.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course. I have been multiple times and even when it is crowded the flow is smooth and you don't find yourself waiting hardly at all. One of my favorite courses that I have played.

An Old Friend, an Old Enemy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Before I say anything else, I should note that this course is my nemesis. It's one of the three courses that I have played the most, and it always manages to break my heart. I can't count the amount of times I have gone into the woods playing on fire, thinking I would finally get the better of old Tom, only to fall apart on the back nine. Not that I've never aced the back nine. I've often rallied from a disastrous beginning to end on a run, but somehow, Tom never lets me put together a solid round.

I hope that's a testament to the course. There's a lot of challenge here. Most of it is provided by the trees. There are several holes here pulled right of North Carolina. If you land off course, you're likely spending at least one shot getting back on course and if you are tempted to drive out, you might be in for a long day of thunk-thunk-thunk. The obstacles at Triplett are the trunks, not teh underbrush. Expect errant throws to be easiy found, but expect them to cost you at least a stroke. Many a bad round here has begun by hitting first one tree, then another until finally, the will is broken. Behind on the scorecard, it is tempting to attempt to much. But playing reckless here isn't going to get you much. That just what Tom wants.

The real devil of the course is 4. After a few holes in the trees. (And how much do I love 2 with dense tree cover but a sweet line coming in from either direction. Where was I? Right, back to 4.) A sharp early dog left then a looooong run to the pin, with a lake to your left the hole way. This prompts a decision that I start thinking about in the car. Play it backhand with a Dragon, hugging the lake and minimizing distance while risking landing in the water. Or flick it straight as far as I can past where the fairway turns, and play along the OB line, away from the water. The former is more reliable on the scoreboard. The latter can allow my best number and my worst.

After that there are two chances to air it out over 300 feet before heading into the deep woods. There won't be another chance for a free drive until 16.

These, "pros" might sound like complaints, but they aren't. They are what I love about this course. Despite all these challenges, I know someday I will defeat Tim Triplett. And if it takes a hundred rounds, it will be all the sweeter.

Cons:

The biggest flaw here is the imbalance in direction. Far more holes go right to left, putting RHFH or LHBH players at a distinct disadvantage. (Oh, maybe that's why the course always seems to beat me.) I've only seen one other course with the disparity as high as it is here.

The only hole I actually dislike is 15. It's a straight shot down what is actually a running trail. It's a bit much, and doesn't really fit thematically with how the course has gone. There's not another way to do it, since the railroad tracks prevent them from expanding any more in the direction expansion would be needed. Still not a good hole in my opinion.

Other Thoughts:

I think my feelings on my old friend have been summed up. It's a love hate relationship, clearly.

I should also note that though I play the blue tees 90% of the time, there are three tees on every hole, and five color alignments, that allow you to play different styles. The far tee offers a lengthy water carry across an attractive lake,(the same from 6) that while the major point of the park, is not seen too often from the course.

Of course, I doubt many people need much encouragement to visit my old enemy. It's the only decent course for a long way in any direction.

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice, mostly wooded course with lots of variety and interesting angles in shots. Nothing repetitive.

The course starts with a few holes in open woods (little underbrush), plays a few open holes, then goes into denser woods for much of the round. It returns with a couple of open shots and finishes back in the open woods.

The 3 tees on each holes give lots of choice and variety; for the most part they offer not just a change of distance, but very different routes.

The scenery is very nice, working around a lake and then into a subtropical forest.

Very convenient to I-95, for travelers to take a break heading to or from Florida.

Cons:

It's mostly a wooded course so if like airing it out, there are only a few open holes to do so.

The gold tees are not only long, but have involve some extremely tight lines in places.

It's all solid, but not a lot of "wow" factor or signature holes.

Other Thoughts:

I played the blue tees but took a peek at the others. I'd rate the blue tees alone a 3.5, but the variety designed in the multiple tees bumps up my rating.

I played a day or two after a tropical storm passed through, yet standing water was only a minor issue. I mention this only because I've heard stories of its I-95 partner, The Sarge, being a bit of a swamp after heavy rains. Though it was a humid summer midday in the woods, bugs weren't a particular problem, either.

Pros:

Wow. I was surprised at how great this course is. At first approach from the parking lot, it looked like a simple pitch and putt course, but looks can be very deceiving.

Let me get some bonus stuff out of the way. This park is beautiful. The course begins near a great playground for the family and has a building with restrooms and .......wait for it.....a working water fountain! The park it self is gorgeous and has a small lake with a wonderful running/walking path and playing courts. I list these things only because many Dgers have families that don't play and can bring the whole gang out. Much to do besides the course itself.

Now on to the course....So many Pros. There are three tee boxes (real not natural), maps on each box! Very first time friendly! The longs are long enough and placed at different positions for different looks! Challenging longs and fun enough from shorts. It has a great mix of open and long shots as well as short and technical. Many types of shots, BH/FH you will need them all. This course was slightly wooded, then open, the heavily wooded. Long enough for a great hike as well as a challenging game of disc golf. Just all you could want from a course. They even have a stand that included a course map, a drop box for found discs (it states it is open on certain dates should you want to show up hopeful to get your disc returned) and they even had printed score sheets available!

Cons:

Not many. If I had to nitpick, I would say the deep woods were covered by huge spider webs and the inhabitants thereof. Bugs and ticks were many. Some areas of the park could get crowded with non DGers and some errant throws could cause some issues, but these are very small cons. This is a top rate time of disc golf!

Awesome Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Some of the best tee signs on a course that I have come across. As others have mentioned there are 3 sets of tee pads throughout the course, which sounds confusing. The tee signs match up to the layout of each hole almost perfectly, making it alot easier to figure out.
- I played the blue tees and enjoyed my round. Would like to take a stab at the Gold tees next time I play here. It truly looks like a top notch layout from Gold.
- I personally thought the holes had a near perfect variation in terms of distances, woods/open. Plenty of challenges with the treelined narrow fairway. Forces you to play smart. Only minor comment from the blue tee layout was that the course seemed to favor doglegs to the left, only remember one dogleg right on the whole course.
- Sometimes this is overlooked, but ZERO litter on this course. That too me indicates that local players look after the course and make sure it doesnt become an eyesore of a multiple use park facility.

Cons:

- You get the sense that when this course is busy, it really feels busy. The walking path is quite close to several holes, which could require you to wait on throws. I also get a sense that discs could be easily lost here, which would slow up play as well.

Other Thoughts:

- All in all I had an awesome experience here. I went super early in the morning and the temps were perfect for late May, (I got lucky). The gate was open at that hour, so I wouldn't hesitate going at that early hour if that is your preference.
- Overall impression was fantastic. It seems as though the Savannah Disc Golf Club, really has it together, which makes me hopeful that they can get one or two more course installed in the Greater Savannah area, crossing my fingers.
- Fun challenging round, and have hence marked this course as a favorite, check it out.

Quite a course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The tees are varied, and not just longer. They are truly set up in a way to challenge those who want the challenge and play a lot easier for beginners or folks who would rather just take it easy and work on short game. The shots are varied, and the water comes into play a couple times. The drive from the gold tees on 14 is kind of daunting as it goes right over a pond into an alley with a mondo on the right. If you miss your shot, you're not going to part that one. Really an enjoyable round.

Cons:

The back three holes were a little hard to find, but that's such a minor concern. I guess the lack of shifting elevations might be a con, but with so many fun shots why complain abou that? I really enjoyed this course.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 13, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a very solid course in the outskirts of Augusta. There is a practice basket near hole one as well as a course kiosk and drop box bin which looks like it gets some use. The first couple of holes have some trees and don't look to be easy layup holes, but not pound you into submission holes right off the bat; I like a course that warms me up to the nasty stuff like this one does. The tee signs are incredible and a must in this park or things could get confusing fast. The color coding works well here with painted concrete pieces or wood stumps letting you know which pad you are at and gives you a 'you are here' type of sign and from there you can figure out which tee pad you want to play. Being that you have three different tee pads for each hole you have lots of options for what you can do to make the course interesting every time you come here to play. The designer(s) did an excellent job of making sure each tee pad challenged the skill level of the desired level; usually when multiple tee pads come into play the shorter tee pads are just put in to make something easier but here not so much. The other thing I love here is that there are different tee pads to some holes instead of just long, middle and short tee pads which is a breathe of fresh air to some of us.

I really love the punishing rough here; a lot of courses I've seen in Georgia have the same style of punishing rough that is so needed to challenge approach shots in a necessary fashion. Most of the ground cover is clear ON the fairway and then off the fairway is where you run into the thicker stuff which is the way it is supposed to be.

The mix of trees as an obstacle in an extreme way is used here but still keeping with being fair and though there is luck (there is always luck) it doesn't get to the point where you just throw and pray you make it through; there is a distinct line (or two or three or more) that you need to hit in order to be successful. After that you have the open holes which are trickier than they look. Most of these holes involve out of bounds in the form of paths or water and if thrown in the fairway could result in the disc going too far or skipping somewhere crazy with the rolling hills and drops off near or around the baskets.

Cons:

Having multiple tee pads can get confusing to people who don't know their way around and if the course is busy the multiple tee pads can work against you in the form of speed of play. The tee signs helps out but you can still get lost. My second time playing I figured out just about all of the locations of the tee pads but I'm a course bagger and it's kind of my job. :)

When I played hole number six was either missing or taken out for some reason. We searched and searched and searched but never found it or even a sleeve or any evidence of where the hole would be even with the sign telling us distance and where the basket should be.

Other Thoughts:

If you get a chance to get to Tybee Island there is an excellent seafood restaurant called "The Crabshack". There they have live alligators that you can feed with a bamboo pole and let's face it how many times can you say you did that in your lifetime? Also you can sit right on the water outside and eat amazing seafood with amazing ambiance. It gets busy on weekends but it is an amazing place.

Pros:

I play this course every time I go to HHI. Great mix of tees and varying holes. Very fun and challenging cousre for all skill levels. I love holes 2 & 4

Cons:

Would be 5 rating if there were concreate tees.

Other Thoughts:

If you have the choice between the Sarge or Tom Triplet pick Triplet. It worth the extra few miles. Bring bug spray.
