New front 9 configuration 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 21, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete tee pads, wooded, great flow

Cons:

Work still needs to be completed, Thorns are pretty bad.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1: Shoots long and straight with two big trees on both sides (about 150' away) then opens fairly nice. Then basket is heavily wooded and tucked behind some trees.

Hole 2: Another long open tee shot leading to a nicely protected basket.

Hole 3: WOAH. heavily wooded, tree cover, trees in the darn way, nicely laid. Sweet putter approach.

Hole 4: see hole 3, but a few more trees to start with!

Hole 5: Hyzer bomb, long and off to the left.

Hole 6: Nice long tunnel shot through an anhyzer to a protect basket.

Hole 7: straight and long, and wooded, and tree covered, and yea did I mention wooded?

Hole 8: SUPER tricky hole, tee pad is tucked in some trees that has a right turn in about 100' then HEAVILY wooded fairway to a pretty open but tricky basket.

Hole 9: Tee box is tucked in some trees, looong shot with a HUGE tree dead center. Then an even longer drive to the basket.

Overall I really enjoyed the course, it is a HUGE improvement over the old, putter only course. Thanks again to everyone involved with the new design.

Great layout, but flawed course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 27, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good mixture of wooded, technical holes and wide-open holes
- Course will test a variety of shots and your ability to hit different lines
- Decently-sized concrete tee pads
- Multiple pin locations on several holes
- Portable toilets next to #1

Cons:

- Signage is limited to concrete blocks at teepads showing the hole numbers
- Navigation can be tricky for people unfamiliar with the course. No course map on-site.
- #1 and #9 play a little close to the road, #10 close to parking area; could be a problem with a RHBH turnover or LHBH throws.
- Little bit noisy with the MX/ATV trails nearby. Worse, the beginner track runs next to #5 and #6, and drivers/riders sometimes leave the marked areas and drive onto the DG course
- A few places tend to get and stay pretty muddy at times
- The growth off the fairways is very thick and thorny in a lot of places
- The grass is allowed to grow very high at times during warmer/wetter months, including the fairways
- The course, while fun, is not particularly beginner-friendly due to the technical nature
- Fairways around #1 and #2 are sometimes used for non-DG activities by the parks department
- After periods of heavy rain the park is sometimes closed due to flooding

Other Thoughts:

-Currently $2 to drive into the park
Full disclosure: Trophy Club Park is my home course. This is a course that tests my game every time I go out there, and it is an enjoyable course. For me, the design of the course scores very well, but the course has its flaws.

It should be noted that when we have stretches with heavy rain, the park will be closed. Due to the proximity to Lake Grapevine, the park can experience flooding. In some of the admittedly extreme examples in recent years, the course was under water, and the park was closed for several weeks. From these episodes there are still piles of broken limbs around the park and the course (though not in the way of anything). After heavy rains, definitely check to see if the course is playable before making the drive.

There is a problem with high grass throughout the course at times, particularly when it is too wet to mow. I have given up partway through a round before here due to growing tired of looking for discs in the knee-high grass in the middle of fairways.

It would be nice to see signage added to the course (maps, info, pin locations etc)

There needs to be a barrier of some sort between the DG course and the ATV/MX track to prevent drivers from wandering onto the course.

Despite these issues, I still rate this course highly. This course has a great layout, and at its best it is scenic and absolutely worth playing; one of the better courses in the DFW area. The flaws could justify, however, a lower rating when the course is not at its best, maybe as much as a point or two lower.

Terrible 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a pretty park.

Cons:

Like the previous reviewer said, "it's a putt-putt course". You literally only need a putter for the front and a machete for the back. No throwing lanes. Course must have been designed by someone who has never played the game in their life.

Other Thoughts:

They have the room and the beauty of the park to make this a great course, they just obviously don't know what they are doing. The park is great though, not many people out here so leave your discs at home and bring some swim trunks and a cooler.

Worst course I've played to date. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 18, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

What a change from the previous layout. This was the worst course I had ever played, and now it's one of my favorites. The short holes are still challenging. Some days you can hit every line and end up with several drop in birdies, but more likely you're going to clip one of the many trees and have a tough upshot just to hit par. It's tough, but so rewarding when you hit the line.

Cons:

Navigation can be confusing. There are still old paths from back when the course was terrible. They have laid out branches to mark the correct paths though. Follow these and you'll be good.

Other Thoughts:

It's a dollar to enter the course and it has a closing time. The dollar isn't a con to me because it helps keep the park so well maintained.

untapped potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 8, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has been redesigned twice sense I last played it

Tee pads for all holes
Good condition Innova Baskets
Alternate pin positions on many of the holes
Very good use of land
Wide variety of holes
Classic hole 18

Cons:

Tee signs are missing for all the holes
The rough is rough, DON'T throw off the fairways
does not always have defined fairways.

Other Thoughts:

for fun, I am leaving my original thoughs on the original 9 hole course. at the bottom.

This course is now one of the top courses in the North Texas area. Very heavy wooded areas, along with a few areas to really rip it.

You have 9 holes on one side of the street (inside the circle) and 9 holes on the bathroom side of the street.

Better get your birdies on the front 9, the back is tough. Several 2 shot holes unless you got a monkey arm.

For the most part, throw down the fairway, take your up shot and you will do good.

Now for some fun, here is my original hole by hole review. not one of these holes are left.

Ok, hole by hole recap and review

#1, nice little hyzer shot. The tee was marked with a very worn out flag. My drive got stuck in a tree.....

#2 I was unable to find this hole the first round, I even looked for it for 20 min. The map is NOT correct here. I have NO idea where the real tee is, I teed off from area next to the road down the path to the basket about 400ft away. I took a 3 playing from here only because of a great putt.
#3, there is a good path you can see from the basket over to this tee. As soon as you come to the fairway, the tee is on the other side of the path. It was not really marked, but had a good worn tee box I could see. The hole is a pretty good anhyzer shot about 275 ft. I got my bird here.

#4 Short path to a very short shot though the woods. I tried an over the head shot (tomato, tomahawk, grenade) that got stuck in a tree 20ft from the basket. The fairway is very tight, the over the top shot is good here.

#5 not marked but plaed from a worn spot. Slight anhyzer shot, not a bad hole on the side of an incline.

#6 is across the road, I was unable to find any markings for a tee or even a worn area. I just threw from the corner of the road and woods twards the basket which is tucked into the woods forcing you to have a forehand hyzer or backhand anhyzer shot.

#7 found a bare spot for a tee, it was a 250ft shot though some woods with the basket just outside of the woods. Took my bird here and was happy

#8, this one was hard to find. After playing 7, walk around the wood to a small clearing that had a flag marking the tee. This is a nice little pretty open hyzer shot. I hit the only tree by the basket but still made my 2.

#9, the longest hole on the course, although I was unable to find any tee area. I just teed off near the road about 40ft away from #8's basket. You can't actually see the basket because it is up and over the ridge of the hill. This made the hole pretty good. It is out of my driving range and I was happy to take my 3 and go home.

latent beauty unleashed 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 6, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-FANTASTIC redesign
-great use of open and wooded terrain and rolling hills
-variety of distance and difficulty of lines
-well thought basket placements
-nice discatchers, new concrete pads
-natural short tees marked by concrete blocks
-alternate pin locations on holes 1, 3, 6, 10, 12, & 18
-paths between holes, easy navigation
-double loop design
-good mix of left and right shots, but still favors RHBH
-rest rooms

Cons:

**Update**
Over a year later and still no tee signs, improvements to short tees, or clearing of some fairways (13 and 17 still have a lot of stumps and the latter has lots of uneven ground across the fairway - treacherous footing). Course is in relatively good shape overall but it seems the improvements have come to a halt. Disappointing.

-tee signs are supposed to be coming soon
-park tables in the fairway on hole 9, sometimes pedestrians
-the DD guys have done a ton of work to clear the fairways of brush but there are still a couple holes that need brush and stumps to be cleared (17)
-i'd like to see a little more creativity in some of the short pad locations. most of them are just 20-50 feet shorter than the longs.
-the old course signs need to be removed and the old tee boxes should get filled in, or at least have their frames removed. i see a lot of players new to the course getting confused about the layout from the old course's artifacts.

Other Thoughts:

The new redesign by the Dynamic Discs Lewisville guys is exactly what this course needed. I remember when the first 9 holes opened and how excited I was about the potential of the land. After existing in a miserable state for the past 3 years this course is finally becoming the jewel it was always capable of being.

The new design uses a double loop to bring you back to the parking area after each 9. The front 9 is on the north side of the road and is the shorter and tighter of the two. The first two holes play through the open area near the road to tree-protected greens and then you are off into the woods. The next two are very tight with low ceilings, the next two open up a bit with no ceiling but still lines to hit and protected greens, and the next two both tighten up again. The last hole of the first half plays out of the woods and across a long open field. This is the only real two-drive hole on the course but the second shot is wide open. I really love the way there are similar pairs of holes through the front 9.

The back 9 is generally a little bit longer and though it is not as tight as the front 9, it is still very wooded. The fairways are a bit wider and more defined but with thick tree lines and brush off the fairway. It reminds me of the long corridors at courses like Searight and Circle C in Austin. Hole 11 is one of my favorites of the new holes. A hyzer route with a low ceiling opens up to a landing zone right in front of the green: a basket protected by large trees on an elevated bunker. Holes 13 and 18 are fun ace runs, depending on the pin position, and holes 10, 12, and 17 offer a chance to open it up but you'll still need your accuracy.

The new design here at Trophy Club makes for a really fun round with a great variety of shots. It makes great use of the land, hopefully will have all the bells and whistles as work continues, and is beautiful and secluded (apart from the bike trails near 5 & 6). A serious challenge from the longs and no walk in the park from the shorts either. I think once the course is broken in and finished with tee signs and hopefully legit short pads, it could be worthy of a 4.5 rating. This will soon be one of the premiere courses in the metroplex.

Uncharted Territory 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I am going to write this review with the promise to come back and update it thoroughly. I just think it would be nice if people actually knew a little about what to expect if they go out there before things are finished. So the 3.0 rating is really just temporary until it is really ready to get a complete rating.

This course has open-holes, wooded holes, nice pin locations, and good tee locations. Because it is new, traffic has not made an impact on the wooded holes yet. I kind of like them a little rough and tight anyway. There is a decent variety in hole length throughout the course. I like that you hit wooded holes and open holes on both the early and later holes. That is a nice variety that keeps things interesting. My favorite hole right now is #7. It is a wooded hole that spits out into the clearing. There are a few routes available right now to choose from. There is a restroom, but it was locked when I was there. Parking is great and I don't expect to many walkers to be in this area very often. The baskets are obviously new and in fine shape.

Cons:

The grass really needs to be mowed, as I am sure it will. Watch for the 2 little marker flags for the temporary tee areas. The flags were missing for hole 1 when I was there. The first hole starts behind the restroom. There are not any trashcans out there as of yet either, so hike it out with you. At the time of me playing here the ground was starting to dry up so, I did not run into anything unplayable or too muddy.

Other Thoughts:

The Fun Factor was pretty good. I think there was at least 4 holes where I could see myself wanting to throw another drive on and a couple of basket locations that had me really thinking about how to get to them. That makes a good 9 hole course. I am looking forward to this thing to really start taking shape. You do pay a dollar into a machine to get into the park, but it was not a big deal. Use the restroom right after you pay before driving the rest of the way, just in case the other one is closed. I am looking forward to going back here for sure.
