Fun variety, but with hazards 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

In short, this is a solid campus course with significant elevation changes and variety. On the up side:

- Giant parking lot right by the first tee, and though it's a university lot it seems far enough away from campus buildings that you'd be safe parking as a visitor on most days.
- The course is setup over hilly terrain that the designers used well to give you variety. You'll find fun downhills (#6, 9, 10, 15), challenging uphills (#12, 16), and one very long bomber hole near the end (#17) that's really refreshing after some dense woods holes; unload everything you've got twice on #17 and you could earn a really satisfying birdie opportunity.
- Fairway lines are pretty decently established on most of the woods holes. Straggler trees in fairways are one of my pet peeves, but they're really only an issue here on #1 and #16.
- Alternate long tees on holes #6 and #8 add more challenge if you're looking for it (more on that below).
- Short but generally smooth and adequate paver tees.
- It's close to I-85 so pretty easy to turn into a fun road trip stop.

Cons:

- There's some thorns and dense undergrowth on #4, 5, and 8 through 16. Could use some clearing to spruce the place up better.
- #1 needs some straggler trees removed from the fairway, so that you actually have a fairway.
- Avoid going long and right on #4 so you don't hit a car in the parking lot around the new apartments down there. It looks like a new hazard due to recent construction. You can't tell it's such a dropoff from the tee.
- The mando on #5 is an awfully small hole to hit. I generally despise the idea of mandos because they limit your creativity off the tee and don't allow you to capitalize on your specialty/best throw style. Even though I managed to hit the mando and got a birdie, wow is that ~12ft tall by ~8ft wide hole between the climbing wall supports tiny from 100ft away. It's a really bizarre hole, and not in a good way in my opinion.
- Watch out for the stream behind the hole on #10. Yes there's a downed log and a weak berm right behind the basket, but the stream is still only about 20ft past the basket and the water looks so dark that you'd never see even a brightly colored disc if it ended up in there. It is a real hazard due to the downhill hole layout.
- #11 is frustrating as it plays literally along an old facilities road with really dense spindly trees immediately lining both sides of the road. It seems impossible to keep your tee shot in the "fairway" road no matter how you throw it here, and then you're welcomed with a jungle to throw through for your recovery approach.
- Like some other reviewers, I couldn't find the long tee for #8. I presumed it was in a parking space at the top lot based on the map uploaded here.

- When there is deep water in the retention pond on #8, like when I visited, then the long tee just makes you think "Damn, you're joking right?!". You're staring steeply downhill at the pond with the basket 360ft away on top of a 10ft wide grassy ridge on the right side of the pond, with an equally bad option of a deep, densely wooded valley on the right side of the basket. How are RHBH players (like most of us) supposed to have any chance of landing a tee shot on that ridge? It seems near impossible even for advanced players. I wimped out and simply threw down to the grassy flat in front of the pond by the short tee; from there it still requires a delicately-placed approach to not roll into the pond (at left) or down into the woods (at right). Maybe this setup is fine when the pond is dry, but it's a "Pros only" hole from the long tee when the water is high.

Other Thoughts:

- My negative comments above may sound like they outweigh the positives, but remember I played the long tees on 6 and 8 and was here when the pond was high. The short tee on #8 is still tough but not horrendously so, and most of the other holes really are quite good and fun to play.

- I'd love to come back when the pond is dry and give #8 a true effort.

- Overall, there's great variety here that can yield multiple birdies or multiple bogies depending on your accuracy and the time of year. It's definitely worth your time to check out!

Improvements in the making 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 11, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Can complete round in under 60 min. Many ACE opportunities. A team of volunteers from HUB city DGC are making this a place to stay. Some new basket positions, tees moved and leveled out, and brush cleared makes this a lot more enjoyable.

Cons:

Natural tee pads can get bad with rain. They need mulch or gravel. Basic course. Tee signs with correct distance are getting made.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't go out of your way to play there. Better options in the HUB city area. I rated this 1.5 stars a year ago. The new changes bumps it up to 3 stars and could even go a bit higher once we see how well USC Upstate maintains it.

Bring the map 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 10, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Nice campus, I was alone and felt secure. Plenty of paved parking
+ The course was well maintained, the grass was mowed. Little litter.
+ Tee signs were good, except I found no sign for #5. Distances on signs seemed way off on some holes.
+ Baskets in good shape

Cons:

- Dirt tee pads. it was dry when I played so they were OK for the shots required.
- Bring a map as there are no directional aids.
- As mentioned above, some signs had inaccurate distances or disc path depictions. I assume some hole redesigns moved tees or baskets, but no new signs were made. Hole #16 sign says 373 feet, it is actually around 130 feet.
- Hole 18 is a new player trap. DO NOT follow the high (right) path as there is no opening to the basket. The rough is a hill with boulders covered in briars.

Other Thoughts:

A nice place to practice upshots with a few chances for a 100% drive. Based on my score and rating, par would be an 830 rated round.

Has Potential! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 17, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- this course offers a challenge for experienced players without being too intimidating for beginners.
- a lot of shorty holes to bag a bunch of birdies if you're on your game. if you're off a little, you can get in trouble quick.
- the college seems dedicated to maintaining the course.
- a great mix of shots for RHBH and LHBH throwers.
- some nice elevation changes.
- a nice course to utilize your bag of tricks - especially if you get off the fairway.
- easy to get to.
- course map at entrance.
- a nice addition to the Spartanburg area. It's a great course that finds its place between the short 9 hole beginner course at Wofford College (downtown) and the 18 hole advanced course at Va-Du-Mar (Boiling Springs).

Cons:

- not crazy about the tee pads, though i've seen a lot worse.
- distances/pin locations on tee signs need to be adjusted.
- a couple of blind holes.
- don't like the cross-up when finishing 18 and having to cross in front of the basket on 7, which is a blind hole, to get back to the parking lot. definitely keeps a heads up on that one.

Other Thoughts:

- if the course is not maintained in the coming Spring and Summer months, you'll spend a good bit of your time looking for discs.
- the tee signs are nice and easy to find - the graphic designer did a good job, but think that he/she was given wrong information on a few holes.
- they've recently removed a few "player" trees which takes the guesswork out on a couple of holes. That's great for beginners, but not as challenging for others.
- i've played this course about 25 times (since before the tee boxes were put in - and both during the summer/winter) and it's nice to watch the course develop. It has potential to be a real nice one as long as the college/club maintains it.

2 Courses in One 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-This is an intermediate level course that enables that level of player to work on skills to get to the next level.

-The front plays to the more technical player whereas the back 9 gives the advantage to the long bombers. This course really has two distinct feels.

-Fairways are well defined for the most part. Most holes have clear lines you are expected to hit.

-Shorter course (but not overly short) that can be a self-esteem booster.

-There are few holes that offer solid ace opportunities.

-Plenty of room to expand the course.

-Private Feel

Cons:

-Tee signs appear to be well done, but some don't give you a real feel for where the hole is.

-Several blind shots with rough nearby. I would utilize a spotter at times and, as has been stated before, definitely on 18.

-The "rough" at times can really be rough. Briars abound! However, this should get better as the course is played.

-The silt fence comes into play on several shots.

-Teepads are not the end all be all, but are workable. You will end up with a woodchip or tow in your shoe.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is a very fun course to play. It's not terribly difficult, but I don't think it's meant to be. It's a great course to learn on and develop skills. This is a good course to hit if you're in the area and makes a great day trip when paired with the course at Va-Du-Mar Park.
