Get Ready to Rip! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- 27 Holes!
- Two teepads at every hole and 3 potential basket locations
- Nice concrete teepads
- Excellent tee signage.
- Fairways are well maintained and mowed.
- Very clean. Have yet to see much of any trash/cans/graffiti on the course.
- Pretty nice variety. Some wooded, some open. All skills levels will enjoy.
- A few fun feature holes including a "through the window" ace run or death putt hole and a "stonehenge" island hole.
- Opportunities to air it out with your distance drivers, especially on the back 9 (19-27).
- Basically disc golf exclusive area. It's located in a park/campground but it's off on it's own.

Cons:

- There's some serious disc-eating roughs on many, if not the majority, of the holes. We're talking tall grasses which may include poison ivy/stickers/ etc. You really want to keep it on the fairway here or you're going to spend time looking for discs.
- Unless you have a big arm, it's hard to score real well here. There's a few shorter birdie opportunities, but for the most part you'll need to bomb to get in birdie range.
- While you are in a nice semi-wooded campground area, the constant drone of traffic from Highway 51 ruins some of the ambiance.
- Navigation is tricky in some areas. Multiple paths leading from the basket in some cases and in a few spots you need to cross the road and walk a bit to the next teepad. Some signage would go a long way.
- What's the opposite of disc grabbing chains? That's what these baskets have. I don't know if they're a little older or extra heavy or what but they seem prone to spit outs/straight up rejections. Seriously, I saw a buddy casually toss a tap in from < 3 feet away that smacked chains and bounced straight back onto the grass. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.
- It's pay to play, which is not a con to me, but the $8/day rate seems a bit high. I think it should be more like $5. Granted there are 27 holes and the course seems to be kept up with, so maybe I'm splitting hairs.
- Some of the holes are a bit repetitive. 350 foot open fairway with a few trees to dodge. Not bad by any stretch, but not quite the variety of some of the other top area courses.

Other Thoughts:

Token Creek, as it's simply known locally, is a nice compliment to the other Madison area courses. It's more open, and also longer, than either Elver or Hiestand. This is a good thing in my opinion, as it fills a niche not served by the others. All in all, this is a really nice course that is well maintained and generally not as crowded as the other top courses. Being able to play 27 is also a real nice bonus, and probably bumps it up a half star for me. For a 300 foot arm such as myself, it might be a little frustrating to be playing for par on most holes, but it's still a fun and enjoyable round. There are a few cons, but on the whole they are pretty minor. It's a course I'll be returning to multiple times in the future.

The extra nine helps! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

As the 52nd reviewer of this course, I'm not sure how much else there is to add, but I'll give my brief thoughts in any case.

+ 27 holes of disc golf on a well maintained property! The sheer volume of disc golf that you can play here bumps this course up from a 3.5 to a 4.0 in my eyes.
+ You can tell that the pay-to-play is utilized. The grass seems to be mowed frequently, the trash cans weren't overflowing, and the facilities on-site were clean. Benches are abundant and course equipment (tees, tee signs, baskets) are in good condition.
+ The flow is, for the most part, pretty logical. When there is confusion on where to go next (such as multiple paths), the disc golf path is usually mulched. This help guide us, as first-timers, through the course.
+ This area is solely dedicated to disc golf. There is no issue with having to watch out for other park-goers when throwing drives.
+ With 27 holes, there's a little bit of variety in lines that are required. You have your straight holes, your around an obstacle holes, and your dog legs to both directions. It felt to me like a very fair course where skill was valued over luck.
+ The island hole on the last nine is a really, really cool hole. Definitely the signature in my eyes. It's fair and fun.

Cons:

- Lack of major elevation here made many of the holes feel monotonous. Even with 3 sets of pins and two tees, there isn't much variation in the holes. Often times the pins are within 30 feet of each other.
- The course, while long and manicured, felt boring. Truthfully, outside of the island hole, I didn't find myself looking forward to any holes during my second round here. I truthfully can't see myself coming back here.
- Mosquitos are god awful. I'm not deducting points off this course because of it, but just pointing it out. I layered myself in three different repellents and still got rocked.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, one round here would suffice. It's a long round, but it's a pretty boring one. It's great, however, if you want to get away from it all and just immerse yourself in disc golf for a couple hours. I don't know if it's worth the $8 fee. I feel like there could be features added (like elevated baskets or something) that would make this course much more memorable and fun.

First time, played the longs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tee pads, good use of land, well designed, easy to follow layout, well manicured. My first course that I played in Wisconsin. First thought that comes to mind is the beautiful use of boulders. Some of the greens I would call signature greens. Good mixture of left/right shots. Mostly long shots but I played all the long pads. Has bathrooms available close to halfway through the course. Also has up to 27 holes and a big parking lot.

Cons:

Lack of elevation. At $8 seems overpriced in comparison to the local courses that I played the next day for $5. Could use some next tee arrow signs in some places.

Other Thoughts:

Rewards smart play which is a bonus to me. The rough can be very punishing in some places. I think this is a very well balanced course. I didn't play the shorts but seemed like an extreme difference between playing the shorts and longs. If I was to only play one round here, the perfect layout would be a mixture of shorts and longs. Most of the shorts looked really short and the longs were really long. It could use more shots that are more inbetween. Didn't throw many mid ranges from the long pads and I throw a midrange close to 350' for point of reference.

Fun for out of towner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was in town for a funeral and needed a pick me up. This course provided that for me! I played short pins and used my fairway driver for most of the drives. The long pins didn't seem more challenging, just required a longer throw. The course is well manicured and was easy to navigate.

My favorite hole was the island hole, but it was just an easy putter hyzer for birdie.

There was also a nice mix of sidearm and backhand throws. There really isn't any risk of losing your disc unless you really shank your throw.

I was the only one on the course which was nice also.

Cons:

I played in the spring so the ground was wet, though it wasn't horrible. Not really the fault of the course, just bring an extra towel and good shoes.

Other Thoughts:

If you're in town and want a straight forward course to boost your confidence, play here!!

Great overall course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Appeals to all skills levels with two sets of teepads and three different hole locations on each hole. Plenty of holes are very open and forgiving, and the holes that utilize the trees don't have too many in the fairways. Garbage cans at every hole and a bench every few holes. Overall a very clean and deliberate course with no other park entities coming into play.

Cons:

There aren't many negative things you can say about this course. A lot of the holes are pretty open, so some may say that it's a little boring, but I think the overall appearance and challenge of the course is solid. Also, the last 9 holes (19-27) are a little longer than the rest of the course, especially if you play the pro tees.

Other Thoughts:

I'm happy to pay to play at the two county courses near Madison. These courses offer more solitude and a clean, spacious feel compared to the city courses.

Worth the money 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Additional 9 holes this year making it 27 now. Probably because of the cost, it's not full of high schoolers smoking weed. You can actually play with out having to wait behind people.

Cons:

Some holes are a bit easy, but just move back to the pro tee and it'll add a little more difficulty. Some have extremely tall weeds to lose a disc in on the sides of the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Some courses, 18 just isn't enough. The $8 you're supposed to pay is worth it here for 27 well maintained holes.

Very nice except price. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

27 holes! The more holes on a course the better in my opinion. Two sets of huge, flared concrete tee pads on all holes. Benches and trash cans on all holes. Navigation was only a problem between 5 and 6. Just required a little extra walking but a sign would be helpful here. Very nice Mach 5 baskets. I'm a fan of the Mach baskets and these catch very well here. There are 3 sets of pin locations on all the holes as well which I don't understand why more courses don't do. Restrooms Available right next to hole 2 I believe it was. Camping on site in what appeared to be a good sized well maintained multi use park. Very large tee signs with hole #, a basic hole layout and distances and locations for all possible pin placements. The park was extremely well maintained and mowed which it should be for the price. The first 18 original holes are more fun than the newer 9. Theres more woods involved on them making it more challenging. I could see losing a disc as a possibility here but its hard for me to say since I went in October. The "island hole" on 22 is a cool idea for making a water hazard like challenge on a course with no water. The wind was a huge factor when I went, especially the last 9. Very easy to find the course, just minutes off I-94. I wouldn't think this would ever be TOO busy, there was one other car when we went at first and 3 when we left. I'd recommend giving this one a shot, I had a real nice time here.

Cons:

$8 a day is very high. Highbridge is the only other that I've played thats more but that has 6 18 hole courses on site. Not the most peaceful course in that its just off of I-94 so theres the constant sound of traffic. So I personally wouldn't recommend camping here because of this. Also there must be an airport nearby as there were planes and helicopters flying all over too. The last nine newer holes were all mostly open and bland except 22's "island hole". Other than that not much. Really solid course, just not Phenomenal.

Other Thoughts:

All in all i had a real fun couple rounds here. You can tell that at least your $8 is going towards the course. Elver and Hiestand in Madison are very close by as well. I've never played them but they are supposed to be outstanding courses . I have played Bird's Ruins in Marshall and would recommend that one and its only about 20 minutes east. That would make for a good day of discin'.

Manicured! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The land is rather flat with a mix of open, to scattered trees, to tunnels. The turf is regulary mowed. There is a very nice kiosk near hole #1.

Huge concrete tee pads. 2 per hole. Shorts/Longs. Some benches.

Multiple pin positions. 3 per hole.

Between the 2 tee pads and 3 pin positions there is a ton of variety on the course. You'll throw pretty much every shot on this course if you play both sets of tees. Even with these it's easy to navigate.

The tee signs are very nice! They still look brand new.

Awesome DGA Mach 5 baskets.

This is one of the most well kept courses that I have played.

The course has recently been expanded to 27 holes. The more golf the better!

Cons:

I don't mind pay to play but if you are only playing 1 round for $8.00 it's rather expensive.

This course is very flat and rather open in places. It lacks that extra elevation or water to get the next half disc bump in rating from me.

Other Thoughts:

The course has recently been expanded to 27 holes.

This is my personal taste. I actually think Heistand & Elver are both considerably better courses than Token due to the type of land. If they were maintained as much as this course the reviews would reflect it. I love going to Madison. I usually hit all 3 in one day.

This course is really taken care of well. The trash is removed very often. The grass is mowed regularly and is beautiful. You can drink on the course, glass is allowed. There are multiple pin locations and they are changed often. The different pin locations really change how u will throw on several holes. There are lots of woods but you aren't playing through tunnels.

Cons:

There are little to no elevation changes, mostly flat. There can be considerable air tarffic overhead. You can really hear the highway on the first seveal holes.

Great Mad City course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

BEAUTIFULLY maintained. The course is right off the highway, and very easy to get to. Two sets of great concrete teepads and multiple pin positions add a lot of variety in the length, layout, and challenge. Lots of different lines through manicured fairways. Holes average between 250-550' or so, and in the longest layout, is definitely a play-for-par type of course.

Playing here definitely feels more like a ball-golf round, due to the overall groomed feel, and beautiful landscaping.

The layout is very easy to follow, and offers good deuce opportunities, and rewarding par holes (#5 is the standout). The rough is pretty light, but the woods will definitely take away an easy shot if you stray out of the fairway.

Pay-to-play. This is the direction our sport should go in, and when the money goes towards keeping the course in this condition, it's well worth the price.

Cons:

Mostly open, with very little elevation change. Some of the holes are similar at the 260-300' range. The course could use a few more good par 4 holes or doglegs.
Watch out for bugs in the summer, and bring some Off.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely worth checking out, and worth paying for! There are park people walking the course backwards on most days to check for the payment, to keep people honest!

Great to change it up sometimes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 19, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Edit(6/5/12): The new back 9 holes are amazing. They offer a very different playing field than anything else on the course, or even compared to all the Madison courses. Very open, which is something I'm not used to so it was very fun to play those for the first time.

Great course. Fairways and even the rough prairie area gets mowed. Three pin placements on most if not all holes. Definitely worth going to even for the money. I wouldn't spend the daily fee if I planned to go there a bunch though. It does have some elevation change, but not much. The fairways are still nicely plotted which does make up some for the mainly flat land. It's a pretty tough course, though not bad. The holes offer a good amount of variation for different throwing styles. Also from what I've seen, the pro tees look pretty challenging. It also seems that most of the times discs are easier to find than at Hiestand park.

Cons:

With the $8 day pass you're best off buying a season pass. The Glide disc golf pro shop next to Hiestand park usually has season passes for sale, otherwise they can be found online or purchased through the regular day pass sheet/envelope. Bugs can also be an issue, but that's part of being in Wisconsin.

Other Thoughts:

The nine extra holes should be finished some time in 2012, which I believe is the reason for recent price increases for day passes. I do agree that the fee is an alright thing since I hate seeing things like beer cans and bottles littered all over Hiestand. I still personally like Hiestand park better, but Vallarta-Ast is still a great course, I just like the variety and topography that Hiestand offers. I still plan to visit token creek a lot, and can't wait to see the new holes.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 10, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very quiet, and beautiful. Well worth the daily fee. Never been greeted by park staff, or receipt checkers. Very little traffic here.

This is a course that is long, but pretty wide open on every single hole. There are no water hazards, no steep elevation changes, and no playing "PLINKO" in a tight group of trees.

Cons:

This course does not "have it all". This course just has everything that I prefer in a course.

Other Thoughts:

I make a day trip once a year to this course, and have an absolute blast. Usually get there around 9am, and play three very casual rounds broken up by a lunch and plenty of drinking. Of the 18 courses I've played, this is my favorite. I like the sheer beauty of this course, with it's well-groomed trails, fairways, cleanliness, etc.

Just Like a Real Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Without a doubt, the best maintained course I've ever played. Fairways are well mowed. Trash cans are on every hole and emptied frequently. There are benches on every hole and two bathrooms are easily accessible from the course. There are pro and am tee pads for every hole, as well as three pin placements. There are beautiful tee signs next to each tee pad that clearly show pin placement and distance. The course flows well--no walking great distances between holes, no back-tracking to get to a hole, no looking around for the next hole.

Cons:

The course lacks elevation change and plays more for the big arm than the technical player. Watch out for ticks, mosquitos, and wild parsnip! I also hate to announce this for a national audience, but there is also a problem with non-disc golfing men trying to seek "favors" from males in the park. Please visit the madcitydisc.org forum before you play the course, so you know what to watch out for.

Other Thoughts:

Because of the $5 daily fee, the course is extremely well-maintained. The fee also seems to reduce the large groups of rec players that the other Madison courses have. The park officials DO CHECK for your permit (I have been stopped on countless occasions), and the fine is quite high. When you think about how much it costs to go to a movie, play mini golf, ski, bowl, etc., $5 is really quite reasonable. Dogs are allowed, but I believe you need a dog permit for Dane County Parks.

Great Course for New Players 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you throw discs....you'll like it here. As many have said, Vallarta has quite a resemblance to a ball golf course. Wide mowed fairways with innocent looking praire style rough that will swallow discs. Tree lined holes predominate the middle of the course, so there's a feeling like you are going into something and then coming out. The 3 pin placements are changed weekly that combine with the wind to give the course a fresh feel for regular visitors. There isn't much elevation to work with, but what is there is used effectively...once again in the middle part of Vallarta-Ast. The long tees add another element to the course and on many holes the longs require a different line...they are not just longer.

Cons:

Mosquitoes are ferocious.

Other Thoughts:

I think Iike this course so much because its a combination of beginner friendly and advanced player challenging. I played my first round here-thats up to over 200 rounds now- and have really enjoyed the wide fairways for learning how to throw properly. As I've improved, the challenges the course has have become more apparent to me and my game has evolved. Technically, its not as difficult as the nearby Hiestand Park, but there is plenty of opportunity for a beginner or intermediate player to develop his/her style at Vallarta_Ast. Top flight players probably would prefer more technical holes, then again...some may like the opportunity to bomb out drivers just for the shear pleasure of it. There is camping and fishing here...showers for campers...dog friendly atmosphere and a new 9 coming soon.
