HOT! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

There were great tee boxes here with nice detailed signs. The course was relatively easy to follow. It offers nice open shots and some small shots. It also has some long mixed with short.

Cons:

The course seemed to stay too short for a long stretch. Toward the end, most holes were small and not very difficult. There is also some pretty wicked brush that is easy to lose a disc in.

Other Thoughts:

I am not a texan. Far from it. I am from Nebraska. When I played, it was 109 degrees and humid. I tried to play through it, but ended up suffering heat exhaustion. I couldn't live in that heat. Tip: Play in Texas in the winter.

Pros:

- Great variety of shots - long, short, flat, elevation, trees, open, hyzers, anhyzers, and combinations there of.
- No water hazards to lose a disc.
- Nice concrete tee pads and signs.

Cons:

- Hard to navigate the front 9 without help.

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite course in DFW because of all the variety. It never gets boring because each hole is challenging in a different way.

Roughin' it at 'The Vet' 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 27, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technical lines all over. I love this course because I need a lot of shots in my bag to make a great score. Lots of variance for only par 3's, short to very long. Great use of scrub shrub vegetation and terrain. At some points you feel like you are in a western with all the cactus, yucca and rocky arroyos, but then you walk out into the rest of the oak filled park and open grassy expanses. Lots of places to use hook-thumbers, side-arms, and plenty of space to bomb down hills from elevated tees. I love the multiple pin placements. Great tee pads, they are redoing all of them. Not much water involved, only on a couple of holes. This course has a very secluded feel to it, which I view as a plus.

Cons:

Not many holes that are easy to run for aces. Some of the very long par 3's could be made into par 4's. You really need someone who has played here to help guide you to the baskets (i.e. holes four - eight). Signage could be better, but I just read an article from the Funky Town Flyers news letter that talked about a new grant for The Vet to get new signs. This course has a reputation of eating discs, but if you go out with a local they should be able to advise you where to throw to avoid losing discs. Personally I've never lost a disc here. Bring lots of water, there is a place to stop for water at a pavilion east of hole #11. You'll need it if it's hot, which it normally is. Tee pads are a bit short for my giant legs, probably fine for most wee folk.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a must play, one of the oldest DGCs and best layouts in DFW. The best aspect of this course is the locals and lifers that play here, they are always willing to lend a hand to find a disc or give new comers directions through the wilderness. In fact, if anyone needs a guide let me know, I might be available on Saturdays. Also, can't wait to watch some pros at the VPO this weekend.

Veterans in the Summer 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 22, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Teepads are in good condition (a lot of them have been redone in the past couple months) and fitting to the type of shot mostly.

- Multiple pin positions

- Great layout with varying shots (Open, Elevation, Spikes, distance) well balanced in my opinion.

- Not to crowded ususally

Cons:

Not too much to say here. It can get pretty hot in the summer down in the valley with no wind or shade...but I guess that is also good for disc flight!

It's a bit hard to navigate at first but after playing it once I didn't have a problem getting around.

Other Thoughts:

I love this course. A lot of varying shots...just very well balanced I think. **Edited this review since ratings because I didn't really know the "guidelines" for reviewing when I first made it**

Above Average 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Awesome elevation changes
-Mix of many shots
-I love the tee pads
-Hard
-Well maintained
-Creative layout

Cons:

-What were the designers thinking on a few holes? I think there were a few holes I would have designed different. Personal dilemma
-Not good for novice players.
-A little hot, bring sunscreen

Other Thoughts:

I have mixed feelings about this course. I like it and I don't like it at the same time. In my case, I played great for most of the day, but on one hole, when I threw a perfect drive, I lost a disc. I believe it was hold 4 or five. I just don't like the fact that you can throw a great long drive and it ends up in a bush because there is no fairway. All in all, this is a good course. It gets more open toward the back nine. If you are any good you will appreciate this course, but you will respect it as well.

Challenging, but Rewarding 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great elevation changes. Challenging holes. Great scenery - Friendly locals (I had no problem finding someone to join with that knew the course layout). Great length and a variety of shots. I only carry 9 discs, but I used all of them. Easy to find the park.

Cons:

Only two: Very hot, with little shade - bring water when it's hot!
Can be difficult to navigate. Click the links tab and print out a course map.

Other Thoughts:

The most challenging course I have played thus far, which is good. If you are better than the course, you won't improve much. This course is better than most Disc golfers. I play close to par at other local courses (Bear Creek, Lake Lewisville). I played probably +18 here, although the first time on a course is always the most difficult.

This coarse has lots of great shots that will test your game. It is one of the best coarses in the metroplex for sure. The park is well maintained.

Cons:

Bring your big shot discs cause your going to need them. There can be a crowd of beginers to slow up your game at times. Also bring water when the temp is high due to lack of shade.

Other Thoughts:

I started playing on this coarse from the begining and consider it to be my home coarse.

Still a Tough one 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Really makes you work on your accuracy
-Beautiful scenery. Some of the holes are just absolutely breathtaking
-Locals are pretty cool.
-The gas station on 12 has water and gatorade and discs.
-One of the most challenging front 9's I have played
-You will need every shot you have to succeed.
-Spectacular views on the entire front 9.
-Great use of elevation, especially in DFW

Cons:

-Can be very crowded on the weekends.
-Very easy to lose badly thrown discs on the front 9. Especially 5-7.
-Snakes are active. Found a few snake skins and a live one.
-Park closes at 11 pm. And they do lock the gates at 11 pm. So watch out if you were night golfing.

Other Thoughts:

As much as this course eats me and spits me back out, I keep coming back for more. The course is very unforgiving to errant shots, but rewards greatly for well placed shots. I will be coming back for more! They have mini's weekly and I think that I will definitely have to check it out.

I absolutely love the front 9. The first 3 holes are quite deceiving on the difficulty of the next 6. Hole 5 is a straight bomb downhill with plenty of trees to grab your shot if you miss your line. But if you do hit your line, it is greatly rewarded with an easy par. Holes 6 and 7 are uphill battles with plenty of scrub and trees guarding the baskets. Holes 8 and 9 open up a little bit, but still have trees guarding the easy lines.

Hole 11 is one of my favorites. Easiest way to get par or a birdie is to flick it or throw a RH backhand anhyzer. The only problem with that is the wall of trees in your way. I've birdied it a few times, but mostly I bogie it thanks to the trees knocking my shot away. Great hole.

The final hole is quite a finisher. Usually the basket is on the hill to the right. A high running flick or anhyzered backhand is good, as long as you have good distance on it. Otherwise, you are stuck in the trees and brush and it makes par a challenge.

All in all, I love this course. Can't wait til I can go back for some more punishment.

Cons:

Nice course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Big tee pads, good signs on most of them too. Nice layout with some open holes to bomb on and some that require a finesse shot. Loved the elevation changes on several holes. Convienence store down the street carries a lot of plastic.

Cons:

Would be nice if there was something at each pin to show the direction to the next hole. Signs on the tee pads had an arrow to indicate the next hole-problem is I always forget to look for that until its too late. Not a big problem though. Standing water around first pin.

Other Thoughts:

I average about 5-6 over par on the local courses I play, thru two rounds at this course I averaged +8 so I think the difficulty is probably about average to a little above. Really nice course in my opinion. I would recommend to anyone.

I would say diverse 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pretty easy to navigate I thought. The terrain and shots are very well diverse and gives your game a nice mix of things to do.

Cons:

May not be the best course to play if you're out to throw some discs. Its always been windy on the back 9 when I've played and can be frustrating for beginners. Always seems to be a very very slow game though, Lots of groups play this course, so be prepared to wait, and bring good walking shoes and water

Other Thoughts:

I wish they would pick up all the shattered glass at hole 8

Veteran's Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Vet park is a nice, multi-use park, and everything is going on. There are a lot of different shots, and the elevation is really cool. The front nine are all pretty heavily wooded and hilly, and it thins and flattens out for the back nine. Having an arm isn't a must, but it definately helps. Plenty of chances for practicing finesse and technicallity. The signs were decent, and the course had a ton of trash cans. The tee pads were all in great shape and were concrete. Baskets were all fine for catching discs, and each hole had multiple pin placements. Very friendly locals, and there was plenty of parking on a Friday afternoon.

Cons:

It can be a little hard to navigate at times. I could see this course making a beginner very frustrated (especially if it is windy). There was some congestion; my two man group played a little over a two hour round. In the hot months, this one will be a hot hike; bring water! It could be easy to hit players ahead of you on some holes, like 5. The signs could be better, but they do the job. Some tee pads were a little short.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice park, and an awesome walk. This one is definately worth the drive if you're in the area.

I bet in about a week, everything will all be green and grown back up. It'll be a whole new story, and I am sure it would be even more frustrating to a new player. This also means that it will require more technical and finesse shots from the experienced player.

I saw the bulletin board, and it looked like a lot goes on at this course.

Good luck and have a great round.

Way overrated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a disc gold course. Some elevation change, some interesting holes. It looks as though a lot of work was put into this course, but a long time ago.

Cons:

Terrible layout (lots of walking from basket to tee). Poorly marked. Aging baskets. Many holes with no meaningful obstacles. Quite a few holes with obstacles that are too easy to avoid. If you use ever shot in your bag on this course, you should try getting a bigger bag.

Other Thoughts:

I am from Ohio and rated this course after looking at the ratings of courses in my area. Hoover Dam (Brent Hambrick), one of the national tour courses has four stars, just like Vetrans park. Lake Shore Park, Massolin, Roscoe Eqing, each at 3.5 stars, are all way way better. I was deeply disappointed as this was the only course I was able to play on this trip and the 4 star rating put my expectations way too high.

My impression is that most serious players and sport promoters in the area have moved on to other courses and left this one to the casual players.

what a hike 2+ years drive by

Pros:

great layout, park is well maintained. fun course to play found myself testing myself with different types of shots, several up hill throws really test your arm.

Cons:

if it is your first time playing find a guide or you will be walking around aimlessly for searching for hidden tee pads in the brush, the front 9 is difficult to navigate and is easy to loose yourself. course could use some "next tee" signs it is posted on the tee sign but is not very accurate.

Other Thoughts:

despite adding probably an extra mile walking with a 50lb bag or so i thought the course was fun and challenging... there are horses on the course i almost hit one... kinda spooked it and me, defiantly made for an interesting day. make sure you wear your hiking boots because the terrain is steep at times and i rolled my ankle a bit with running shoes. bring lots of water to keep hydrated too, it gets hot when the sun is beaming.

-Some good distance shots, and plenty of shots that need a little more finesse
-Tee signs on every holes is nice! (but they don't help you with finding the next tee)
-Not a lot of traffic
-Very clean/well kept, plenty of trash cans
-Friendly locals

Cons:

-Not easy to navigate for first timers. I was lucky to have a friend who had played before, my first time. My second time I had a map, just in case.
-I could see it getting really hot during the summer.
-Not any easy course to hike if you're out of shape.
-Definitely not a beginner course

Other Thoughts:

This course is really fun, but it's pretty difficult. I played it twice today, and I am just wore out.

-Shot variety is great...long and short, wide open and treed, ups and downs, lefts and rights
-Lots of elevations change
-Not huge hole waits if there are any.
-Plenty of "big-arm" holes
-Plenty of finesse holes
-Numerous pin placements per hole
-Clean course and well kept
-Long course
-Right smack dab in the middle of the metroplex
-Nice surrounding park area...

Cons:

-One of the worst for mud if it's rained in the week prior
-If you don't like playing in the wind, it can be really window out there.
-Might run in to some jogers or dog walkers being that there is a walkin' path cut through some of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Another great course right in the middle of DFW. Everyone should get to this course.

Both the front and back nine are loaded with big elevation changes and different types of shots. Mostly spotty trees in long fairway with elevation ups and downs.

Should be played by everyone...totally worth a drive and it's a nice change from the usuall local courses.
