Waccamaw Off. I Really Liked it!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm typically viewed as a harsh reviewer. I typically find faults that others don't. So, it's rare that I think other people are being way too harsh on a course. Such is the case with Waccamaw Park.
- This was a fun, creative layout considering the grounds they had to work with. There's only a small area of tree/shaded area? Make two holes out of that area. Thin rows of trees and tall grass throughout a field? Create fairways and some obstacles.
- Hole #1 is a fun starting point. Open fairway to a basket on the back of the trees. It wasn't until I got to the hole that I noticed the basket was on the edge of a several-foot deep ravine. Somehow my tee shot skipped over the ravine. Better to be lucky than good.
- Hole #2 is a complete 180 from #1. Tee off from behind the trees, throw through the trees to a basket back by the first tee. If one or two trees were cleared out to create a clear line, it would turn this into a quality tee shot rather than the poke-n-hope view. Plus, I like the bridge over the ravine here.
- Remaining holes all used tall grass as rough, mowed fairways, and some trees to come into play. Each tee shot requires a fair degree of accuracy if you're wanting to see birdies. Throw in a decent variety in lengths, layouts (doglegs, straight shots, etc.) and you're getting to throw different shots throughout.
- Of these holes, #3, 6, 7, & 8 were all fun. #8 is the best multi-shot hole at 450 feet. If you avoid the trees, a 3 should be expected. Get your disc knocked down, and you're fighting for your 4.
- Excellent tee signs. Tee pads were in pretty good shape too. As were the baskets.
- For a park in the middle of nowhere, it was in great shape overall. When I had to turn at the abandoned gas station, I started picturing a rundown course. Quite the opposite.

Cons:

As stated above, I wish the fairway was more defined on #2. On this hole, you're either throwing a 75-foot tee shot (hitting one of the trees), or you're in the clear having thrown a 250-300-foot shot. There's really no middle ground.
- #9 was probably the most boring hole on the course. Once you get past the tree line fairway, the second half of the hole is a wide-open shot to the basket. Just slam your disc into the fence behind the basket, and you're left with a rather simple 15-foot putt. Easiest way to make a 3, especially if you're not good at judging distances.
- How recently the fairways have been mowed will determine the quality of the course when you play here. Also, some of the thorns and other nuisances need to be kept at bay.
- The course isn't close to anything. Even coming back from the Wilmington area (Southport) headed back to Charlotte, it was a detour to get here. Again, it's a HUGE credit to the P&R department that this park is in such great shape considering where it's located.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course. I'm a big fan of Waccamaw Park.
- There's also a Waccamaw River Park just outside of Myrtle Beach. This Waccamaw Park is leaps and bounds better.
- Very good course to play through multiple times. Location may have something to do with it. But quality is the main reason.
- An obvious comp for me to this is Park Circle in North Charleston. Between the open and flat, coastal layout, similar vibes throughout.
- I enjoyed holes 4 & 6. Both offered better chances to make runs at the basket.
- With a lack of shade, this course can where you down in the summer. I played on a hot Sunday morning in August. My shirt was soaked after a single round.
- Good reason to take a detour. And honestly, I avoided more traffic going this way than the more direct way every other car was taking. Glad I played it. Hope it's not a one-and-done for me.

It was probably OK, the day it was put in 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 30, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good DisCatchers and great tee signs, someone was serious about putting a course in this small multi-use park.
The concrete tee pads were not too bad, kind of short, but since they were flush to the ground, it is easy to make whatever run up you need.
Variety of holes, not just a pitch-n-putt as you might expect on this type of course.
Separated from other uses in the park, except a walking "path". I say that in quotes because the walking path wasn't paved, but a cleared, mowed grass path.

Cons:

The fairways - most of the fairways were cut through thick brush and shule, then mulched. The problem is, most aren't very wide (10-15') and the weeds are taking over the mulch.
The rough - thick and tough, in many places growing so high, you can't watch your drive. Then you could be spending a long time looking for a shot just off the fairway.
#1 has you lined up to go through a group of trees, with no clear fairway. The alternative? right down the entrance drive to hyzer around the trees. Then, there's a hidden ditch right before the basket.
#2 has the same patch of trees to go through, but a little better chance of finding a line.
The pars - most of these are good as Par 3s, just keep it between the weeds. But #8 and #9 are both over 450' ... and Par 3s. I guess somebody told the "designers" there are only Par 3s in Disc Golf.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little park, in a rural area of Brunswick County that is known for its beaches and not its DG courses. The other facilities, ballfields, basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds are all very nice, BUT someone still takes care of them. On this course, they spent the money putting it in, then haven't done much since, except mowing the area that should be the fairways.
The walking path that winds through the course has nice short grass, and generally stays on the high ground above several drainage ditches. Since most of the fairways were overgrown, and the rough was, ROUGH, I altered a few holes to use the mowed areas as the fairway. I had a couple of throws end up in the rough, but I could see where they went in, I had a couple end up in the ditch, but I could find them. (But watch for the ditch on #4, stagnant water.) These seemed like a much better, and efficient, way to play this course. Maybe that walking path gets used a lot during busy times, but its something to consider.
I didn't play all of the holes here, or I played short, keep it in sight throws. #9 finally gave you a chance to air it out as you leave the shule jungle and head to the short grass for the final hole.
The first reviewer of this course was hoping they would add 9 more holes around the ballfields, not a bad idea, but they should remove about half the current holes, and move those to the more open, ballfield area. That would make this course a lot more playable.
This course is about halfway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach. I've been wondering for a few years if I would ever have time to drive out to bag this one. Now that I've played most of MB (Splinter was just going in when I was there) I decided to make the 40 min. drive out to this one. Baggers gonna bag.

Stay In Your Lanes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Waccamaw Park is a multi use facility that also has a 9 hole disc golf course . There is a large parking lot in the back of the park where the course starts/ends . There are nice restrooms located near the concession stand .
The Equipment - There is a nice map at hole #1 . Other than some confusion going from hole 7 to 8 , you wouldn't have had to take a picture of it ( take the picture ) . The tee pads are trapezoid cement and flush with the ground . The tee signs were informative and first class . The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers .
The Landscape - The course fairways were mowed and the trees trimmed when I was here . There is a huge ditch that is invisible from the tee , but sits directly in front of the #1 basket . There is a creek that hopefully won't come into play that runs along the right of hole 4 . The fairways are mowed , but the rough is very punishing any time you venture off of them . The course travels counter clockwise for the first 7 holes , then back and forth for the last 2 .
Course Appearance/Atmosphere - This is a very nice park and appealing to look at . There were a couple of families that were enjoying the nearby playground . A lot of upkeep goes into this area . Any problems I have is with the rough ( See cons ) . I was here just after sunset .
The Highlights - #1 ( 328' ) is a flat drive that you either have to enter the woods halfway and up to the basket , or send your disc down the right side over the cement driveway . The basket is flanked by a few trees , but has a deceptive gully that you don't see from the tee directly in front of it .
#2 is over the gully right in front of the tee this time and partly through the woods to an open fairway . The basket hugs the left side of some rough . #3 is a tight drive that turns into a tunnel shot at the end . Deep rough is on both sides . Avoid the rough on the right . It's higher , deeper and has a dropoff . The rest of the holes are cookie cutters and mirror each other . Some go slightly left or right . All have deep rough on both sides . Unless you have skills , or like to look for your disc , you want to keep your drives low here .
The Time - It took me just over 35 minutes to play Waccamaw . Some of that time was looking for a misguided driver . A group of 4 is going to handle this course in about an hour .
This is aa nice park where the family can hang out while you get your Disc Fix . There is even a nice shelter to sit and read in .

Cons:

#1 The Rough - On a scale of 1-10 , 10 being the roughest , this course carries at least an 8 . If your disc drops in sideways and you take your eye off it for a second , it is a park souvenir . Several blind shots to the basket will add to your chances for a lost disc , or at least a long search . The rough is present on almost every hole . Take turns spotting if with a group . I went into the thickest overgrowth on #3 and saw what looked like a bunch of Waccamaw High School graduates still looking for their " Class Of 2018 " lost discs .
#2 Redundancy - after the first 3 holes , the rest start to look similar to each other . Slightly bending fairways to the basket . Absent are doglegs and maybe a par 4 or 2 .
#3 Predators - I may have been bitten by insects more here than anywhere I played on my vacation . Use excessive amounts of spray before playing .
#4 Navigation - only bad between 7 and 8 . You have to take the path cut out to your left , then as you are walking toward the chain link fence , take a hard left and walk up the fairway a little .
#5 Disc Risk - High . See con #1 . Any wind here , and your disc becomes Mother Nature's . You might want to sub out your good discs for your used or found ones .
#6 the Fairway Options On Hole 1 . The only clear path to the basket is over the road which you came in on . A mando might have been a good idea here . Take a look down the road before throwing , or the car you just hit might want to stray from the road and onto the tee pad you are standing .
( Novant Medical Center is 24 minutes away )

Other Thoughts:

The park is excellent . A great place to take the family . The course is just okay . I don't know why some course designers and park department come up with the idea that having thick and high rough is a great obstacle for a hole . This is going to be a deterrent for locals , kids and newbies , and aggravating for intermediates to pros . If you spend most of your time looking for your disc , or lose your prize midrange or driver , chances are you won't come back . Foot high overgrowth with OB markers can accomplish the same thing . I'm done ranting . Other than that , the course has some length ( almost 3000' ) to be challenging to most . This is the type of park that you might want to hang out and eat a sandwich or relax after a couple of rounds .
My Recommendation - If you can control your drive/first shot , you can play . That goes for even the Waccamaw high schoolers down the road . This is a nice course for the locals to work on control in short bursts , not good for airing it out . The technical aspects and blind shots might interest some local intermediates and up . For travelers and Course Collectors , Waccamaw Park sits 13 minutes from US 17 .
I can't fully endorse this course , but the grade A equipment and the quality of the park is what makes this place special .

Hot and Humid 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice pads, signs and baskets.
In a park with bathrooms.
Soft sandy soil is kind to your disc.
Only saw one other person playing on a Saturday.
Easy to navigate.
Good parking.

Cons:

Thick, unfriendly, disc eating, swampy rough.
Only one hole (#2) through the trees and not much of a line to throw through on it.
Not much variety.
Only nine holes.

Other Thoughts:

Worth playing if you're in the area, but not a destination course at this point. Lots of young trees so the course will change with time. Maybe they will add nine more holes and use some of the forest around the park. This would make for a more interesting course.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 9, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

??? A. 9 full length holes.
B. Nice signs/baskets and tee pads.

Cons:

Where to begin..... A. Hole 1 forces u to throw out over the incoming park road or go straight thru the trees with no opening path. If u throw over the road, watch for cars. Also, small deep ditch/creek in front of basket u cant see for the patch of woods.

B. Hole 2 gives u no cut fairway to throw down. Nothing but solid tees and bushes to throw thru.

C. I lost a Frisbee on hole 4 because there is a real small creek that when full of water is dark. Also looks like a great area in the warm months for snakes.

D. Most of the remaining holes I was hesitant to throw on because of the fear of losing my Frisbee in all the swampy/bushy surroundings. Very thin fairways especially hole #8!!

E. The knats/flies/ or whatever they were were flying around my face for most of the course and I couldn't hardly see to throw off the first few tees.

F. Why couldn't they have put another nine holes around the ballpark?

Other Thoughts:

Could be a nice course if fairways widened. Also sprayed for bugs. Also some of the bushes on the fairways cut out so not as easy to lose a disc. Addition of nine more holes.
