There ARE hills in Kansas 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Amount/Use of elevation 10/10. In stark contrast with the other courses in Manhattan (and most of central or western Kansas) this course has tons of elevation change. This provides a different kind of challenge for many players in the area. The elevation is pretty varied, with 1, 4, and 9 being very downhill, and 2, 3, and 7 being very uphill. 5 and 6 also play back and forth with a sidehill. The downhill on hole 1 is pretty unique too in that the dropoff isn't until about 100 feet off the tee pad.

Condition of baskets/tees 10/10. Both are in great shape. A couple of tees are shaped so that they provide a good path for a runup to either of the pin positions, almost like two tee pads on top of each other pointing different directions.

Variety of openness 10/10. It is very rare for a 9 hole course to have enough variety for me to give this a 10, but this course does. 1, 2, and 8 are pretty technical, 3, 4, 6 and 9 are more open but still have enough hazards to keep things interesting, and the others are somewhere in between.

Course maintenance 9/10. Course is generally clean and the grass is decently well mowed. Both times I've been it was a little longer than ideal but good enough. The signage and shelter near the start are also in good shape.

Use of obstacles 9/10. Overall this course does a great job of using all the obstacles available to it. Every tree/bush in the middle of the park comes into play on one hole or another. My nitpick is that they maybe could've used a little bit more of the space in the woods. A lot of holes have the edge of the woods come into play as a boundary.

Navigation 7/10. Both the course map by the first tee and the tee signs at each hole are well done and easy to read. That said, the flow is a little strange in places. After hole 3 you could very easily go to the 9th tee instead of the 4th, and after hole 4 you walk past the hole 7 tee to get to the 5th hole. In addition, many of the baskets can't be seen from the tee (1, 5, 6, 8, and 2 long), so on 5 and 6 you either need to look for them earlier in the round, or walk up to see which spot they are in. Arrows to the next tee and some way to signal which location the basket is in would improve this.

Variety of distances 7/10. There are more holes on the short side, but hole 9 (and hole 5 if in the long position) give you a chance to really air one out. Hole 3 and 7 being so uphill make them play longer as well.

Reasonably challenging all levels 7/10. This course is short enough that beginners won't get frustrated, but technical enough that more experienced players will still find some challenge. It's probably the best for intermediate players.

Cons:

Alternate hole positions 3/10. 5 of the 9 holes have one alternate pin position. In my opinion holes 2, 5, and 6 are done very well and significantly change the hole. However, hole 4 and especially hole 7 feel pretty much the same regardless of which spot they're in. I'm not really sure why the other holes don't have alternate spots, it seems like there is plenty of space on all but hole 3. I think giving 8 a long pin, or 9 a shorter one in the woods on the right, or 1 a pin on either side to force a different angle, or moving on of the spots on 4 back into the woods would help a lot and utilize more of the wooded area here.

Finding discs 4/10. Despite having no water hazards, you may spend a decent amount of time looking for discs. The woods are fairly thick if you go off the fairways and as mentioned before several holes have blind shots so you may not see your discs land.

Comfort while playing 4/10. It's only a 9 hole course, and there is a decent amount of shade, but the elevation plus the hike at the start makes it so having a bench or two on the course would be really helpful (there is a shelter near the start that is good for if you're playing it multiple times). Maybe one on the trail you cross from 3-4 and again 8-9, and one at the 6 tee would be perfect. A water fountain or a restroom could be good as well.

Variety of shot paths 5/10. There are multiple holes that force a left to right shot (2 short, 5, 6 right), but not really any that force a right to left. 1 and 8 pretty much require you to throw straight, and the others are open enough you can throw whatever you want. I think the course would benefit from having at least one left to right shot, even if it's just for an alternate pin.

Decisionmaking required 5/10. A couple of the holes do a good job of making you think about what kind of shot to throw and giving risk/reward options, but more holes having this could make the course even better.

Other Thoughts:

Overall challenge 4/10
More exact rating 3.53

There are no major problems with this course, and it provides good variety when compared with the other Manhattan courses. The fact that it's 9 holes makes it ideal for a quick round.

challenging course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 25, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of shots very tricky holes on most. huge elevation changes. easily the toughest course ive played which can be good or bad.

Cons:

it was extremely muddy so it caused a hazard to where it is very easy to fall down a rocky hill and hurt yourself. some tees were hard to find and some baskets were hidden so well i had to scout them out before teeing off at each hole.

Other Thoughts:

i would recommend this course for experienced players that have a high fitness level as it is long and you have to do some pretty serious hiking in between some holes.

Short and technical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a different animal from other courses in Kansas. The holes were short, most didn't go over 300 feet, but they were very technical. Often this meant throwing around pine trees(more dense than deciduous ones), throwing at very different elevations or both. If you play a lot of disc golf in Kansas, this course may provide a unique and different challenge not seen at most other courses in this state. A couple of holes sat on very big hills and provided and awesome view. Unlike Tuttle Creek this course requires more finesse and utility shots. Accuracy and creativity are definitely required to do well here.

Cons:

My biggest complaint is how the baskets were arranged, they were often difficult to find. Sometimes it seemed like they weren't there. With it being my first time and from out of town this was very frustrating. The baskets should be marked better, out of town visitors would have a much better time. Next we played after Manhattan received about 5 inches of snow. Most of it had melted, but with there being no grass from the cold weather and pine trees making it impossible for anything to grow on the ground, there was a lot of mud. I'm sure this would happen after a good rain also. I'd recommend wearing a pair of shoes that you don't mind getting dirty or having a pair of cleats.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of hiking was involved. You have to walk a ways before you get to the first hole, which is quite different. This course is only 9 but it would be interesting to see it turned into an 18 hole course. If you ever are near Manhattan and want a different kind of challenge give this course a go.

Hike 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 26, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to navigate, well maintained, great changes in elevation (especially for KS), very scenic tee boxes, good mixture of short and long. Most baskets are protected by elevation or trees.

Cons:

Long hike to get to course, wind tunnels are unpredictable, parking is terrible. Would love to see 9 more fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Solid course that uses elevation. Warner is a huge park so hopefully an expansion is in the works.

Great Course!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 6, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Small course with great challenge (uphills, downhills, right hooks and left hooks). On top of a hill so wind factors in as well. Nice concrete tee pads and signs were clearly marked as well.

Cons:

Hole 1 and Hole 2 are in among heavy tree and require some/lots of luck or GREAT accuracy. I did kinda like this challenge but it can really hurt your round fast if you hit a few trees in a row.

Best course in Manhattan 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great views, interesting course design, last shot is breathtaking from a good height, and picnic table area looks nice.

Cons:

Only nine holes, spent lots of time searching high grass due to elevation and misjudged windy shots, very popular place and crowds up, hole 7 completely out of sequence,

Other Thoughts:

This is the most challenging nine hole in town. Couple holes are complete blind shots. This is the rare course where after driving, you'll want to drive again from the same tee.

Warner Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun elevation course, shorter up hills and longer down hills, make all holes plausible to hit par. Very secluded, with some tight tree shots. Directions to each tee box's that take you on hiking trails in between.

Cons:

No flags on the pins, and some baskets are close to each other, so you don't know which one to throw too (number on basket, but have to walk to it to read it). Short, but quite a bit of walking involved. There is no in between, either a wide open shot, or you are throwing into a mess of trees. Takes more luck than skill on hole one.

Serenity in Manhattan 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 25, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is clearly marked and the tee pads are nice. The course is very well maintained. No trash and paths are clear. The course is beautiful and has very scenic spots. The holes are really fun because they are very technical. Lots of tree obstacles.

Cons:

The course was short, and there is a high probability to lose a disc. There is a bit of a walk to the course, and a lot of car noise from the roads.

First Ever Review of this Course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 7, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are two major down hill shots that are really fun, they are almost "cliff shots". There are also three heavily wooded fairways that are very technical. This course offers a variety of tree and elevation challenges which are unique from other Manhattan, KS courses.

Cons:

Small 2 minute hike from the car, BASKETS ARE NOT VISIBLE FROM THE NEARBY ROAD. However, it helps build some excitement and it gets you warmed up to play the game.

Other Thoughts:

Unlike when this course first opened, the fairways are now mowed on a regular basis. So, if you stopped playing because of the tall grass you may want to give it another go.
