The Warrior has a lot of variety, but is showing its age. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of holes, open, partially wooded and heavily wooded. Good use of the elevation available, just about every type of elevation you can imagine.
Several of the baskets and tee pads have been replaced, but more are needed.
Located in a beautiful State Park, with no admission charge. It is located between Kingsport and I-81, so very accessible for all the activities, campground, fishing and boating lake, swimming pool, soccer, golf and horseback riding.
All of the fairways are wide enough to hit a line, even the more wooded holes. The open holes add some distance, but not overly long.
Some holes have multiple tees and multiple basket positions.
19 holes on one side of the park road and parking, then another 8 on the other side. I'm guessing these other 8 were added later, after the 1980 opening.
#27, one of the coolest finishing holes you will find, more on that later.

Cons:

Several of the baskets and tee pads need to be replaced. I lost count how many of the baskets had chains covered in rust, including #1. Although they have started replacing tee pads, several are small and have bad dropoffs.
There are 4 holes on the open hillside at the start of the course. It seemed pretty easy for errant tee shots to cross fairways and interfere with others, especially on #1, with the park road down the left side, most players are going to play away from that, toward #18 tee and #17 basket.
A long, tricky downhill walk from #1 to #2 tee, however I don't see another way to get past the playground to the other side of the course.
#4 tee is in an awkward position, in an open area, just off the main route to #13 basket. If people on both tees aren't paying attention, it would be easy to get beaned.
The Tees signs are pretty old and basic, they look like original equipment.

Other Thoughts:

One of the original Disc Golf courses in Tennessee, it was great to play this piece of history. These courses usually have a lot of short, putter or mid-range holes, while there are several, #2, #14, #15, #16, #19, #20, I've seen courses from this age with a lot more. They do allow for ace runs.
I started by mentioning the variety of vegetation and elevation, along with those, the distance is varied pretty well also. Everything from the shortys mentioned above, to several holes around 400'. I'm not sure I agree with #1, #5 and #6 all being 400' and Par 3s, the later two being the best of these. Both are valley tee shots, past partial woods (#5 toward the green and #6 off the tee), and finishing uphill. #18 is just under 400', but downhill and curving left, probably one of the best looking holes on the course, especially with the basket tucked in the edge of the woods.
The most interesting of the wooded holes is #10, straight, slightly downhill with a huge hardwood tree framing the basket. The other wooded holes are wide enough, if you miss key trees, to get close to the basket.
#15 is the most memorable and fun and the short holes. Straight downhill, just 188', once you hit the gap, there is a small creek to clear just before the basket.
Another fun downhiller is on the final 8, #22 is just under 300' and drops 30-40', the fairway is framed by a little used park road on the right and some thick rough on the left, let it fly, but keep it straight!
We've all played tight tunnel holes, maybe straight lines of pine trees, or bamboo, or just thick trees, but how many have you played down a tunnel of large rock embankments down the entire length of the hole? #27 is such a fun way to finish your round, the basket is probably normally in the 300' position, but at about 175', you have a rock outcrop blocking the right half of the fairway, get past that and you have a shot at birdie. Get stopped by that and you need a straight upshot to save Par.
It would be nice to see this course get some love and new equipment. They are certainly making other improvements to the park and the golf course appears to be in excellent shape. I'm sure this course started out with some high ratings, but I don't feel it is still at the 3.77 level. It appears to be very popular (since I have seen people playing every time I have been near the course), probably because there are holes for all types of players, but in its current condition, Winged Deer Park is a much better course.

Quantity over Quality 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

27 holes with concrete pads in a very nice, large park setting. The disc golf course is well separated from other activities. There is ball golf, camping, boating, fishing and play grounds all on site. Nice place for a weekend trip if you can get here.

Fairways were well cleared and grass was cut. Park seems to be maintained well.

Course plays mostly through the woods, but does offer a few holes throughout that play through mostly open terrain. Elevation is used, but not so much you need to fear any big hikes.

Most of the wooded holes are short, technical holes that force you to hit a line in the 180-300' range. Seems like a good course to work on some putter and mid range shots.

Cons:

Some areas have baskets close to tee pads and vice versa. It could get a little dicey on busy days. If there are other people playing keep your head up, and eyes open. 9's tee pad is pretty much in the putting circle for 8. Kinda tight in spots.

Navigation is a little tricky in spots due to multiple foot paths weaving through the woods, and no signage to help.

Tee pad signs were very rudimentary when they were there. Some were missing.

Repetitive in that you have about 1/3 of the course ending a straight or RHBH turnover/ RHFH shot.

Not many memorable shots or great holes. Just a lot of basic disc golf. And most of it is pretty short deuce or die type golf. By my count there was about 20 holes under 300'.

Hole 13 forces a shot right over hole 4's tee pad. That must be a blast on a tournament day!

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course is worth a stop if you are in the area. There are 27 holes with concrete pads of very playable disc golf. Just don't expect anything outstanding or road trip worthy.

Luckily, there were a couple interesting holes in the last section that made the monotony of throwing turnovers in the woods worth it.

Hole 21 is a fun downhill shot that forces you to hit a gap and then go back up hill. Hole length is 498' and it is pretty cool.

Hole 26 plays through a very narrow, rocky ravine and leaves you little room for error. Great looking fairway, and a nice challenge.

Much if this course seems old and looks as if it has undergone a few design changes over the years. I did notice an extra tee pad or two not being used. There is lots of cool land, hills and trees, and it made me think that maybe if this course was being built new today, we'd have a very challenging 18 hole course instead of a 27 hole course with too many short repetitive shots. Oh well, I still had fun, and it was only a few minutes off of the highway. I'd play it again, and if I was a camper this is definitely a park I'd consider a weekend trip to someday.

1st course I played in TN! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Benches on almost all of the holes, Signage on every hole (although slightly worn and faded), Interesting hole ideas, Designed by Mr. Steady Ed himself!, Several shots that had great elevation change, for the most part the course was very fair and allowed for an array of different shots, There are an additional nine holes that offered one of the most beautiful hole layouts i've ever seen (I forget which hole number on the additional nine, but you play inbetween two small hills with huge boulders on each side, BEAUTIFUL SHOT!), With the exception of hole #2 the next teepad was usually easy to find,

Cons:

I don't want to call the course "run down" but it will be there soon if a club can't get some of the trash/grafitti/beer away from every teepad and bench area.

Some holes (hole 9 in particular) I didn't feel were kept up and are very poke and hope in nature... A couple tree's down and you have very manageable and challenging fairways that remain "Fair".

Other Thoughts:

Good introduction to Tenessee disc golf! I can't wait to return!

A great blend of open and tightly wooded holes!

Solid Eighteen, Bonus Six 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Most holes have signs, benches, concrete teepads, two basket positions. Top quality, easy-to-see baskets. Extra holes 19-24 offer longer and/or tighter challenges than the first 18. Subtle water hazard on #14.

In large, multi-purpose park, but mostly plays away from other park users. Not too far from many food and petrol options.

Cons:

Lots of graffiti on benches and worn/faded signs. My nine-year old daughter asked what some of the words meant, and I quickly had to tell her to quit reading them! :-O

Holes #23 and #24 parallel each other and play in the same direction, so there is a bit of a walk from basket 23 to tee 24. Number 2 takes you near the end of a childrens walking trail.

Other Thoughts:

Good blend of wooded and open holes (2/3rds, 1/3rd). Differing basket placements can make this course left- or right-turn dominant - when I played it, it was fairly mixed. All holes are challenging, but nothing outrageous. Likewise, most holes will have some change in elevation, but nothing too dramatic. Holes 20-24 are more "extreme" than the first eighteen - the open holes 20, 21, and 24 are much longer and have greater changes in elevation than their earlier counterparts. Similarly, wooded holes 22 and 23 are longer and narrower than earlier wooded holes.

Favourite hole: #23. A long, straight, narrowing shot with a steep, tree-filled slope on your right and the side of a small rocky cliff on your left, closing in as they meet near the basket, which is backed by even more trees.

To find the course, after passing the marina building, take the road to the right up the hill to a parking lot of the right. Holes 1-18 are across the road, and 19-24 are on the side you parked on.

An all-around solid course. Updating the signs would greatly improve things. Would love to see if they could somehow add 3 or 12 more holes to make this a 27 or 36 hole course.
