Fun Pitch and Putt Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 14, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very short, but technical enough (LOTS of trees) to keep it interesting.

A good balance of left-hand and right-hand holes.

Relatively well maintained park.

Cons:

No sign to point you to the parking by the first tee, and nothing in that lot to direct you towards the first tee.

The course map that is provided is useless. It marks off where the tees are, but it doesn't show where the pins are or even have arrows to show you which way to throw.

The tee signs are likewise useless as they don't have maps on them or show you where to throw either.

No score cards. (A third missed opportunity to provide a course map of some sort.)

The aforementioned paved walking trail was apparently put in right on top of the (sic) tee pads, leaving you to either: shoot in front of the tee box, shoot on the trail itself (and potentially in other patron's way), or taking an awkward step down as you plant your foot to throw (a great way to twist an ankle).

The bathrooms by the 'golfer' parking area we're closed, but signs on the doors point you towards another building who's bathrooms were.....closed. With nary a porta-john in sight, families with little ones are SOL, and the rest of us will just have to naturally irrigate the local flora.

Other Thoughts:

A fun course for advanced players to fart around and see how many deuces you can manage, an even better course to take newbies to to show them the game. (If you know your way around already or you can group up with some locals).

A little investment in signs would improve the playability of this course by leaps and bounds.

Fun little confidence builder (I may have spoken too soon...) 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 13, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Watson trails is a fun little course that forces you to finesse just about all but two of your drives. LOTS of young (little thin and in the freaking way) trees abound. Hole three is a great example: 100+ feet away, looking right at it, I could just about putt it, except for the forest of skinny treelings between me and the pin.

Cons:

I feel that the pars are a bit overstated. This course is no more than a par 3 from any pin.

Other Thoughts:

There are a couple of stone ace runs here, there's a nice lake and you can run through nine in about an hour.
If you are on the south side, I suggest playing Paul Schroeder, Bluebird and Watson in a day. All 3 are 9 hole courses and are within 10-15 minutes of each other. They are not the pinnacles of Saint Louis Disc Golf courses, but deserve their play, so make a day of the nine's once in a while.

Nice and Clean 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 18, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very clean course, fun 9 holes, require a lot of shot variety off the tee, water on one of the holes the course is well manicured and in a great park setting. quick course that you can play 2 or three times in a day.

Cons:

Mulch tee pads. only 9 holes, most holes are pretty short, you could play most with a mid range.

Other Thoughts:

Nothing bad to say about this course, I just really like it, great little technical course that requires some finesse shots, wish it had more holes.

Putter Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 8, 2007 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

2020 Edit: This course has been tweaked since I wrote this review with some improvements, so it's not as terrible as it was in 2007. It's not as good as it was in the 90's (it was a solid 3.0 back in the day) but it's an OK rec course. The Ace run on hole 4 has grown on me and it has some other fun elements. I will fully edit this review when I get a chance, but until I do you shouldn't read it. It's out of date.

This is a busy 9-hole course. It seems to have a loyal following amongst local players.

Cons:

This is not a very well thought out design. Most of the holes are pretty short and easy, and most of them could be toughened up with just a little effort. For example, # 6 is a short shot across a wide open field to a wide open basket. The basket could easily be tucked up into the woods to make the hole more difficult. The basket for # 9 has been moved far down the hill from its old placement, making the hole play much shorter and taking a lot of challenge out of the uphill shot. The landscaping (or lack of it) on #5 is going to develop into a major erosion problem. Several of the holes mix in blind shots down a walking path, giving me some safety concerns. After I finished # 7, I looked for # 8 for 10 minutes. I eventually found the basket and had to backtrack to the tee. There are tee signs, but other than that many of the tees are not marked.

Other Thoughts:

This course originally was a pretty challenging nine holes. It was a heavily wooded course that went throughout the park along a walking path. The park department got a grant to make the path handicapped accessible and blacktopped it, forcing the course to be moved. The new course is crammed into a corner of the park, and the shots are short and shorter. Only #7 and # 9 remain from the original design. If you are visiting St. Louis, this course should be at the bottom of your list.
