A funhouse arcade of par-3s

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short and fun for beginners
Lots of interesting par-3 challenges
Mostly in the shade
Tough enough without being too overwhelming to beginners
Good variety
Some unique and bizarre holes that are not unfair, although a beginner might have a tough time throwing one over the gigantic rock.
The baskets are excellent and the disc seems to vacuum right into them.

Cons:

There are only par 3s
The routing gets a bit confusing towards the end
Some of the holes are way too close together.
Some of the tees are in not the greatest shape and are too small.
They probably would have been better off having about 14 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Sure, some of the holes are way too close together and if this place is ever busy, it would be discs flying at your head in all directions, but on a nice quiet day, this place really is a lot of fun.

The course opens with a very friendly and short gentle hyzer, then the second hole is a long uphill throw into the edge of the woods. Then the goofiness begins, that keeps you guessing all the time. 3 narrow holes along the bottom of the cliff are next, followed by the strangest hole I've ever played, a 125 foot hole, straight up the side of a cliff to a blind basket over the back of a gigantic rock. Just throw it straight up and get over the top of the rock and it'll be right by the basket. 7-10 are back and forth across an open field and are practically on top of each other. This would be a tough area to get through if it's busy, but each hole does have a fun challenge to them. 11 and 12 might be my 2 favorite holes, both are way under 200 feet but you absolutely cannot go long on either one, and short leaves you with a death putt. 12 is sharply downhill and about 125 feet, it's about like throwing a 40-foot putt. 13-17 are all fun little par 3 holes, the unfortunately thing is they are all on top of each other. 16 and 17 tee pads are right next to each other and play in opposite directions, so you play 16 (a very pleasant hole), then walk back to the tee and play 17 (also a very pleasant hole). Then there's a long walk to 18, then another long walk to your car. Perhaps changing this area up a bit to play #14 as #17 would be a little better for traffic.

Overall though this place is in nice shape, the locals obviously care that it stays that way, and other than being all par-3 holes, it probably wouldn't get boring. Oh sure, there are a couple of nothing holes, mainly one and 18, but there's a lot of creative fun stuff in between.

I know it seems necessary to have 18 holes, but this place probably would have been better if it were about 14 holes instead. Maybe combine #1 and #2 into a par 4, skip 8 and 9 because they are dangerously crowded, and take out the current #17 and play the current #14 as the second to last hole. They could also make 18 into a much longer hole to finish, perhaps 500 feet par 4, following the same tree line.

I don't live in the area but I'd definitely play it again just because of the extremely fun variety of shots.

A compact little gem

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 2, 2020 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

~ Good variety of challenges for a short course, and a good mix of open/wooded holes. Pretty good place for beginners, especially if they've only played open park courses. The wooded holes on this layout require precision without asking for a lot of distance at the same time

~ The middle holes of the layout play in the upper section of the park, and feature a few throws back and forth across an open valley, with tees and baskets obscured by woods. They're good holes. But the transition holes between the lower and higher parts of the course are a little janky. Hole #6 is 150' almost straight up, over a large boulder - and hole #12 is 113' almost straight down with water behind. These aren't they kind of holes you find on "normal" courses (the first reaction standing on the tees might be a confused "What the hell...?"), but they're fun and memorable nonetheless

~ Fully a third of the holes are ace runs. The experience at Covered Bridges may seem at times to get into Mini Golf territory: short holes with really obvious obstacles. But the layout is clever, the shots are varied, and the place is a lot of fun. Although the navigation is tricky in spots and a few of the holes crowd one another, the tee signage is excellent signage, the paver tees are very good, and the DGA baskets catch just fine.

~ This is a short gem of a course that's been polished through a lot of hard work by local volunteers. Get in a fun round before or after visiting big ol' Jordan Creek

a beginners first review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wide variety of shots. Lots of terrain changes. Great place to hone approach shots as most holes are short. Hard to lose a disc as most woods floor is clear of undergrowth.

Cons:

MOSQUITOES! are nuts, in the woods anyway. Cover up and bring spray. Some of the tees are a bit short. Holes 7,8,9,and 10 are placed close together so be sure which basket you are aiming for. It is easy to throw at 10 from the 8 tee. Baskets were numbered but most have worn off.

Other Thoughts:

I went on a Monday at midday. Only 1 other group of 2 on the course that I saw. This was my first play here and I navigated the course ok, but some arrows and markers would have helped. And I agree with a previous reviewer some warning of the stream on 16 would have been appreciated.

A solid variety of par 3's in a beautiful park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 13, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good variety (shots, elevation, distances, etc)
Just long enough without becoming tiresome.
Benches/Places to rest at (almost) every hole.
Very, very well maintained.
Good warm up area (big open field and a practice basket right by hole 1)
Very little/no hazard
Cool feature holes

Cons:

Parking lot is a little small for the amount of traffic this course see's.
Course can become very muddy and stay muddy for a bit.

Other Thoughts:

Alright, full disclaimer: This was the first course I ever played but for the sake of DCGR I'll try to keep that bias out and get down to a objective review.

So this course is in fact a par 3 course... but it doesn't feel like a typical par 3 course in the sense that everything is super short and easy to birdie. The variety on this course speaks to how thoughtful the layout was. You spend a good amount of time in the woods but the holes that play out in the open play well and give you a good chance to stretch your arm out. You have features that range from top of the world shots utilizing elevation to blind down hill shots and of course the Rock feature (by the way the thumber over the top is the only acceptable line for that hole) that will keep you interested the whole way through. The maintenance on this course is top notch and all concrete teepads is an absolute treat. Some people say this is a good beginner course but I can attest that on my first trip out... I was overwhelmed and unless that friend is pretty athletic you might want to take them somewhere a little easier. It's definitely geared towards novices to am's but I like to think even a skilled player could enjoy themselves on this course. Distance wise this course hits a sweet spot making it long enough to feel like some exercise but not leaving you tired by the end of a round. That being said do budget yourself a decent amount of time to play this course as it is not a lightning round kind of setup you do one pretty big loop through the park. To cover my cons: when it rains this course can get really rough, with so much of the ground being pretty soft once you get into the woods it gets slippery and muddy fast mix that with hilly/rocky fairways and its easy to lose footing. Overall I think 3.5 is a fair score, this course is very well put together, well maintained, and well loved but it isn't going to be featured on the PDGA tour anytime soon.

New Tee Box Signs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New tee box signs have been added to make the course even easier for new players. Well rounded course with a little bit of every type of obstacle (mainly trees).

Very clean park/course! Cudos to the Township workers!

Cons:

Can get busy at times.

Other Thoughts:

The new tee box signs are really nice. I wish every course had signage like this (especially when I'm playing a course for the first time). Also, the #3 basket was moved higher up the hill for added difficulty (I liked that move).

Always one of my favorite courses!

Fun Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Cement tee pads. Excellent tee signs (see photos). Baskets catch very well. A couple of unique holes (6, 12). Nice park. Navigation mostly easy. Good drainage - played the day after it rained and the course had little water on it. Nice mix of holes. Single basket but multiple pin positions so it can play a little differently each time. Has a practice basket. Can get some birdies to help your confidence; a local told us that one guy has aced #12 six times (not that surprising).

Cons:

All holes are short (see hole info here). Some of the fairways play close to each other (more of a problem for inexperienced players but this type of course is appropriate for them). Some of the baskets are hard to see from the tee even though they are in the open. Non-obvious long walk from 17 to 18. A few of the wooded holes do not have any clear lines - some people might consider that a 'Pro'.

Other Thoughts:

Use the aerial map from this site (the first map provided is worthless). My favorite hole is #6 where the basket is at the top of a hill behind a boulder; it's a blind heave but I liked it. Hole 12 is a very short downhill hole - classic risk/reward. I liked a few of the others as well (3, 10, 15). It definitely has a fun factor. It will not challenge the experienced player but if you go i knowing that, you can still have a good time. Played with a local which made navigation easy. They are moving the tee (and perhaps the basket on 16) because of a bike path.
Tee signs must have imp[roved after many of the reviews here. Next enhancement I would do is to make the baskets more visible (color, flags, something). "Birdie Alley" could get old - too many short holes in a row.

easy and fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 12, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

some of the things about this course is there is a lot of variety from throwing over a rock to throwing off a cliff. another one of my favorites is the ability to launch your disc and my last one is they have some tight shots. covered bridges is a good warm up type place if you want to play Jordan or other hard courses in the area. my last reason is sixteen has a new tee because the old one kept getting flooded so now it is directly behind seventeen's tee.

Cons:

I have two problems with this course. my first complaint the holes are not spaced out good enough so there is a chance of getting hit. my second complaint is people don't have the right etiquette meaning too many people in a group and they don't let you play through.

Other Thoughts:

my other thoughts are the course needs to have directions telling you where to go I played it enough to know now but my first time it was a little difficult navigating.

Enjoyable. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 26, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Fun! Rec and infrequent players will enjoy themselves on this mostly short course. Many of the holes are potential birdies, but there is enough of a challenge not to take them for granted. A mix of open and closed holes.

Cons:

Needs a little attention from a navigation and info standpoint. Footing was slippery in some spots. No nearby bathrooms.

Other Thoughts:

Near an area that has some tough to very tough courses, this place is a change of pace that was a blast to play. You have to avoid alot of trees to cash in, but the lines are there.

good for the ego 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 27, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Left to right, right to left, uphill, downhill, open, narrow......you will get to play alot of shots.

The baskets placements add character and challenge to a lot of the holes.

Good tees, most have diagrams.

The overall layout makes nice use of the available space. They put together a course that just about all levels of skill can play, yet most everyone should enjoy.

Cons:

Could use updated tee signs in spots, and maybe a few arrows to point you around.

Other Thoughts:

They did a good job laying out this track. There are some challenging basket placements and narrow alleys with demanding approaches and the shortest of the holes have the baskets placed as not to make things too easy. Still, there are bunches of birdie out there.

Number 12 is a very short hole, but if you go for it and miss just a bit long, you are in the drink. Nice example of risk/reward.

If your accuracy is off and you are missing fairways, birdie...and sometimes par quickly vanishes. Once you start banging trees, you may wish you were on a simpler "grip it and rip it" course. However, even the narrower alleys are fair.

Finally!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 11, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Holes 9 and 10 are back, but in different locations. I like.

Cons:

I really don't have much bad to say other than not all tees are concrete, but that never really bothers me. Could use more seating and trash receptacles. Oh, and by the way, it's really disturbing to see all the trash people throw around tee boxes and around the courses in the lehigh valley...come on people we have such a plush park system here, let's keep it clean!!!!

Other Thoughts:

I/m tired of playing rounds at Parkway, Jordan, Wehr's and every other course in the valley and picking up everyones empty beer, soda and water containers and carrying them to the next trash can!!!!! We are lucky to have such beautiful resources here!!!! Smarten up people!!! People cry about the oil spill, then toss a plastic bottle in the woods!!! Be responsible for our children's future, don't litter...not even a cig. butt, I don't. Oh, by the way, I aced the 8th here on Wed. the 11th. Thought I was in the trees again, but it dropped at the last second, went right in the alley, then glided right in dead center....my first ace!!!! Erick luckily was my witness. Not bad for only playing for 4 months. I average 1 under here...best is 4 under. Eddie M.

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

i love this course. it gets a bad rap for the crappy tees and signage, but its still lots of fun. it is tight woods. short technical holes that are very fun. mix of obstacles and water and open spaces and elevation.

Cons:

hole 17 is nearly non existent. i cant find it. but i love the rest. some benches would be nice. and a few holes need o be revamped pads and signs. but who cares if the course is interesting and fun?

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 is pretty standard first hole, open space, and one tree in the way. just fine to warm up on, and if you have a good right hand BH nice to try for an ace. thats my new goal

#2 farther and on a slight hill in the woods. this hole is a little harder because there seems to always be wind blowing from your right that messes you up. but still not much more than a warm up.

#3it gets a lil tricky here cuz the basket is on a very steep hill. this one annoys me because you need to take a hard last min turn to the right at only 170 ft. the fact that its close makes it harder

#4 pretty straight-foreward. through some trees and your there this is a good one to try for a birdie.

#5 The trees are denser here. and the hole is further. a careful FA will do the trick, if your right handed. but this one gives me a lil trouble. the right side is a steep hill with a lot of brush to get stuck in and the hole is raised up and extra 2 1/2 feet on a rock platform.

#6 This one is unique fun and tricky. the hole is a short distance up a very steep hill on the right behind big ass boulders. this is a rare treat of a hole.

#7 i like this one alot. you are in a field throwing down a gradual slope. the basket is on the left in the woods just over the crest. the hardest thing bout this one is getting over the crest without over throwing on the drive once it drops off past the tee. Me gusta

#8 i like this one alot too. throwing from one small hill over a dip where theres a road and the basket is on another hill. in a relatively narrow opening for a drive watch for rollers.

#9 another great one. throwing from 30 or so feet up off a bit if a cliff, the basket is behind an island of trees on the left. fun fun.

#10 throwing out of woods into a clearing, your drive is blocked by 3 or so trees 100 to 175 feet ahead. it looks like one of them was added after the fact, in exactly the spot where you want to throw. a good RH FA that breaks into an S and you can have a birdie here. just dont get cocky and miss an easy 15 foot putt like I did here.

#11 Pretty standard, 1 tree in front of the basket so you have to go around. but your on a hill so if you slip up, your rolling .

#12 this one bugs me. but its interesting. you throw down a steep cliff at a basket that is only 120 feet away. even with a putter im overthrowing or banking too far to be close enough for a putt. theres a water trap behind it to make a bigger pain. i dont like it but ehh thats just me.

#13 - #17 are pretty standard short technical wooded holes, the elevation is gone. so your just trying to avoid the trees. i like these holes but there is not alot to say about them. the tee for 17 is gone so you just throw from somewhere near where you end 16.

#18 finally back on a concrete pad. you are in a field with the woods on your left. the hole is in the woods at 250 feet. a good RH BH puts you right on it. easy birdie.

One of my most played courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Covered Bridge is a hidden gem in South Whitehall Township. While certainly not as challenging as other courses in the area, it is still a great course. Hole #9 and #10 were just changed and now play a little easier. There are always people playing at Covered Bridge, and for good reason. It is a great course for someone to learn the sport. It is great for new players as the course's layout will allow even a first time player to make a couple good shots during their round. It is a great confidence booster and is one of my favorite places to play at.

Cons:

Sometimes a little buggy. Hole 17 is hard to find if you have not played there before.

Other Thoughts:

If you want a nice course to play disc golf at, here is the place to go. It's a little woodsy, so remember to bring your bug spray, but on a hot day it is very cool in the shade.

Keeps on improving!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 23, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 holes with baskets in excellent shape. All tees either fully concrete or with concrete blocks, which are in fair to great shape. Mixture of some open holes and tighter wooden ones. A little elevation and some rolling greens add to the challenge. Wooden holes have tight fairways. Almost every hole under 300 but holes 2 and 9 get up to 350-400 feet. Very low chance of lost discs here. New signage on many holes. Steps near holes 9 and 12 are a huge plus, making a treacherous walk very easy.

Cons:

Rain will make wooden holes tougher and slippery, especially hole three. Some wooden holes seem a little repetitive. Many good holes, but no true signature hole. Field to the right of hole one should be avoided at all costs.

Other Thoughts:

I first played this course years ago when it was a little boy scout project that would certainly never amount to anything. Then, the locals have taken over and have really hit a grand slam. I enjoyed the new pin position on hole eight, and the signage really helped. It is not a destination course by any means, but if you have played the top courses in the area and you just want some light, fun ace run type holes, come over and check out Covered Bridges Park.
