Pros:

Well-designed course in a multi-use park, that co-exists well with a walking trail that winds its way between the holes.

• Variety: Very Good - Great mix of holes that: a) require you to find and hold a line, b) are mostly open, but require you to hit a defined landing zone, and c) holes that are completely open (and I do mean COMPLETELY). The wooded holes have a variety of shapes, and will have you throwing hyzers, annies and/or forehands, as well as straight shots. Nice range of distances, too.
Several holes have enough trees and rough that you really can't just let it rip off the tee and hope to score well, yet still offer a few different lines off the tee. Players have options, and are forced to make a decision and execute. A card full of players could each try different shots off the tee, and all do well ...if they execute.
The rough is thick enough in spots that you'll also need some creative recovery shots to save par if you leave some of the fairways.

• Elevation: Reasonable - Not completely flat. A few mild elevation changes are sprinkled around the course - just enough to add/subtract some distance to your shots, or come into play on a couple of approaches/putts, but topography isn't all that much of a factor here.

• Challenge: Very good - This course should be challenging for a wide range of skill sets, and I think it will do a good job of creating scoring separation to break players into Rec, Intermediate, and Advanced skill levels. Most holes really place a premium on placement. Quite a few favor distance, but only if well-controlled. And a few favor raw distance, even if it's not particularly well placed.
NOTE: I played in the fall - after trees in the fairways had lost their leaves and the rough was thinned out. I'm quite sure that playing here in June or July after things have grown into mid-season form, that scores will be a few strokes higher. I'm also quite sure it's much easier to lose discs in the rough during the summer months, too.

• Equipment: Good - Nice sized concrete tees were level. Tees signs are easy to spot from a distance and show hole #, distance. Most posted distances seemed reasonably accurate, but I feel quite certain that #'s 8 and 15 are considerably longer than the posted distances (i.e. over 100ft). Original Chainstars still look new. Everything seemed well-maintained.

• Aesthetics: Good -Whiteford's a pleasant walk in the park, but nothing special. Nice and quiet during my round, but don't come here expecting some beautiful nature walk.
• Fun-Factor: Good to Very Good - I particularly enjoyed having to make decisions off the tee and every shot in your bag variety. For many, the difference between Good and Very might come down to time of year. For many players, I can see this course being more fun during the fall, and perhaps less fun during peak summer growth.

• Routing/Nav: Excellent - Next tee signs were present for most (if not all) holes. Never once had to wonder where to go next.

• Responsibly designed: High marks to course designer(s) for where they placed tees and baskets relative to the walking path that winds thought the same parcel as the course. They kept the path behind all the tees, and placed the baskets well in front of the path, so you never have throw across it. A few holes play roughly parallel to the path, but there's generally sufficient buffer to avoid trouble when shots get away from players, and/or ample opportunity to see people coming/going so you know to wait until the coast is clear. The path comes close enough to the tees and baskets for pedestrians to see what we're doing, without really bringing them into play. Well done!

Cons:

Way more right than there is wrong.

• Low lying ground holds water, so it's pretty muddy after it rains. I wouldn't want to play here a day or two after a good soaking.

• More informational than a "con" per se: wind can definitely be a factor here (not just on the last few, really open holes)

• After carving it up among trees and trying to avoid the rough over the first 14 holes, I can't deny #'s 15-17 offer a degree of balance to give big arms the chance open up and gain a few strokes, but they're so completely out in the open, they feel unimaginative to me.

They could have left #15 wide open for a nice rip off the tee, but tucked the basket just into the woods a bit, so that even a great drive still requires a decent approach to the basket. I don't know if that property is available/part of the park, but that's was my take as I played. If so, maybe an elevated basket?

#16's a 550 ft Ace run. Nothing but a tee, a basket, and the wind.

On #17 there's a 2-3 ft drop on the left of the fairway that they could have placed the basket near, so approaches that sail long result in longer putts because mild downhill. Would also make players think about laying up vs. running it, especially if there's wind. Those two changes in pin placement would still greatly favor big arms off the tee, as extra distance would set up shorter, more controllable approaches. But those baskets are so exposed, I just didn't care for those holes.

Other Thoughts:

Despite some of my gripes, I really had a fun time here, and think the designers did quite well over all.

I enjoyed Whiteford more than courses I've given 3.0's to, but don't feel like it's in quite in the same league as the courses I have at 3.5. and I can't fault anyone for giving it a 3.5, because it is a pretty good course.

In my mind, Whiteford's very much a 3.25, but that's not an option, and I don't like to round "up." For a course to average 3.25, some scores have to be lower that. That's just how it works, so 3.0 it is. If "good" hurts anyone's feelings, write your own review and tell us what you have to say about it.

Favorite course in the area 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 24, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Great mix of holes to make you bring a lot of different tee shots to the table. 2/3rds of the course or so is open and a stretch of holes in the back 9 are wooded.
- Good tees and baskets I don't know the brand of but seem really chunky and solid.
- Couple of par 4s which are pretty rare in the area (but the tee signs don't tell you the pars iirc so hole 16 in particular is a bit confusing)
- Easy to follow layout
- Close to the highway and easy to find even though on the course you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.

Cons:

- Make sure you watch where your shots land, especially the shanks. The majority of the course looks open but the rough can really swallow discs. (I've even almost lost one down a hole in the ground )
- Definitely need to check for ticks when you come here as well as keep an eye out for bees.
- Not really a con, but most times I've played here it gets very windy. It can get a bit frustrating especially for beginners.
- The course in general is a bit rough around the edges. It gives me the impression its still being worked on.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't take beginners here, but imo as long as you have a controllable 250ft or so, I don't think you'll have any problems. It strikes a good balance between difficult for me to score on but also wouldn't be boring for a pro imo.

Great course challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

different hole setups
different hole distances
great Tee Pads.
challenging layout.

Cons:

Can play soggy after rains.
Ticks last year.
No Par info for men / women

Other Thoughts:

We are intermediates. My wife and I are competitive on courses with men / women par set ups.

Hence why she LOVES Parmalee Park. Because it's way shorter.

But I absolutely LOVE the challenging and varried hole setups.
Challenging for an intermidiate but no lost disks : )

GOOD work in progress on nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

quickly becoming my favorite course even though it over 30 miles from home.
reasonable, because it is not finished as yet. (while we were there they were laying the last concrete pad.hole #14 I believe) we were the first to tee off on it.
GOOD..because the layout is nice and hole play is easy to follow, the terrain is a bit rough, but the tees and baskets are all concrete.
I am in my mid 50's so some of the holes are long for my distance. However here is where that par three everything is silly. Ultimately the game is played on number of strokes. WHY, would you want newer players and average players feel they cannot "par" a course being an average player, especially when you are working to enhance the sport.
as far as the surrounding it is clean, away from people enjoying other aspects of the park. the trees are moderate to heavy. Minor elevations. fairways were mowed. Holes 7 - 14 are inside the trees. Hole #1 hidden by a big bush, and seated on 6 foot hill with a cliff like drop off the back side.
Holes #9 brings you back to the parking lot if you are looking for a shorter day.
Holes #15 - 18 play along the field from north to south in the wide open for testing some of your distance throws, and with a predominate SW wind pattern in the area, it is kinda sweet.

Cons:

a couple holes inside the tree really hold water after rains.

Other Thoughts:

ok so this is my update note>>> they are taking care of it wonderfully, much better than average...they thinned out some trees, and heavy rough...great course.<<<<<
it begins to the east of the south east side of the southern parking lot. Course then plays south to the property line and east to the property line, # 4 four takes you straight north along eastern property line and begins then zig zags back forth east / west heading north.
AGAIN I cannot stress enough this IS NOT a all par three course. especially for the player who is looking to just enjoy the sport and not be a "pro". I do not know what the future of this course is, multiple tees or what.. but I like it.
