Pros:

Excellent upkeep. Regulars take excellent care of this course and there is a broom and garbage at every tee pad.

Variety. There are a lot of different shots needed at this course. From accuracy shots through thick woods with narrow fairways, to wider open shots along the powerlines.

Location. Love the fact that this is a disc only course. no sharing the course with picnickers and other yahoos doing non-disc things.

Cons:

needs updated tee signage at some point. Other than that, no issues.

Other Thoughts:

As a beginner this course has a little bit of everything. I love variety, it gives me a chance to work on every type of shot I need to improve my game.

This course is five minutes away from my home town of Montague and there is a ton of family and friends in the area which makes it even more attractive to go home.

Pros:

This course is a nice little jaunt through the pines. Whitehall has really grown on me since I first played it. It was hard getting accustomed to the technicality and the tightness of this course, but it forced me to learn how to throw diverse shots and focus on control versus brute force. lt will definitely let you utilize every shot in your repertoire and cause you to develop more. The terrain flows well and has good variety of right and left bends and mild uphill and downhill shots in a few places. Mandatory routes through tight spaces are a challenge if your control is off. Pin placements are challenging in some of the more densely wooded areas where vision is obscured by foliage.

Cons:

Not much in the way of negative aspects at Whitehall. If I dig for something to say I would start with the fact that this course can be frustrating and is probably not a good choice for rookies unless they are looking for a trial by fire. Could be discouraging. This will get your skill level up in a hurry though. There is no water here. Doesn't bother me, but some require water hazards as a mark of a good course. Also the ceiling is pretty low through the vast majority of the holes which makes it feel claustrophobic and almost indoors at times. I would like to see a bit more open sky in a few places, but that is not the style here. This is a forest. Lastly as I think about it, there is not any particular hole that stands out as awe inspiring or even moderately striking here. It is very businesslike. Not saying that a "signature hole" is a necessity but uttering the word 'wow' is probably not going to happen here. The holes on the original 18 are, however, all consistently solid with very little absurdity. The deep nine is a bit unrefined at the moment and I am ill prepared to talk about them as I only vaguely remember them.

Other Thoughts:

Whitehall is a great place to play. It definitely requires you to come with some quality shot making and will bring you to new levels of control and ingenuity. And whoever busted up the baskets needs to get wrecked.

Something for everyone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is essentially 3 9 hole courses. You can start at 1 and go through 9 back to the lot or similarly 10-18 or D1-D9.

The 3 courses range in difficulty. Holes 1-9 are a bit easier, almost like warmup holes. Holes 10-18 are a bit more difficult and get you stretching the arm a bit more. The Deep 9 are by far the most difficult and have the longest holes.

Cons:

As I understand it, the Deep 9 is a newer addition to the course and thus it is not nearly as well marked, nor is it as easy to navigate. It also doesn't have the tee pads yet.

I was also disappointed to find that at least 6 of the brand new baskets in the Deep 9 had been broken, and the basket part was only hanging by the chains. Seems that some people just don't respect things.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course, and I think as time goes on and some work gets put into it (especially the Deep 9), this course could easily be bumped to a 4 or 4.5. Great course to play on the way to Flip City to warm up.

Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 15, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Easy to follow, there is no way you will get lost. Nice cement tee pads. after each group of nine holes you come out to the parking lot so you can play them in any order. first 18 holes are all fairly short and technical. decent variety, You have to go left and right. difficult but not impossible, each group of 9 gets harder. Pretty hard to lose discs here.

some holes that I really liked:

16: 355' downhill shot. a few different lanes, you can throw FH or BH.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com...16&page=1#

D2: the most unique hole I've played at any course. It's set in part of the forest that looks like there was a fire (trees are all charred and black). There is a sort of "double" tee pad, and 2 distinct fairways so you can take a FH or BH shot or hyzer/anhyzer.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com...20&page=1#

Cons:

so many trees that if you get off the fairway it's quite frustrating. While the shape of the shot changes a lot, the terrain stays the same throughout the first 18. There is no water, which to some people is a con.

overall I think this course could be improved by removing a few trees. I get that It's supposed to be tight and difficult but it might be overdone a bit.

Hole I dislike
D6: 650'. It is really long but there are too many trees to really bomb it.
http://www.dgcoursereview.com...24&page=1

Other Thoughts:

EDIT: The Deep nine has cement tee pads now. I bump my rating from 3.5 to 4

Fun technical course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 11, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a dense pine forest, with mostly flat land and a couple rolling hills. A few times, the course emerges into open sandy areas or grassy meadows, and the design makes great use of these by shooting into or out of the trees to make interesting challenges. The rest of the holes are almost all tight lanes through a pine forest with low ceilings and lots of branches to grab your drive.

There is a good mix of straight shots and shots that turn right or left, and the course felt fairly balanced overall. The course builds through each 9. The first 9 is almost all ace runs if you hit your gaps in the trees. The middle 9 has some more length, with a few longer holes and a few ace runs. The newest 9 has the most length and challenge, and offers a couple holes where if you risk it, you can throw a real drive. It was fun to have the course get progressively harder through each 9 hole loop, especially since each loop comes back to the parking lot allowing players to play them in any order.

There are good concrete tees on the original 18 holes, with good surface and plenty of room. The original holes have good wooden tee signs with basic layout and distance, and it looks like those are in the works for the new 9. The course was easy to follow, with good flow, and never any conflict between any of the holes, it felt very secluded even with a handful of other groups playing.

Cons:

Especially at the beginning of the course, it can get to feeling a bit repetitive, with a few too many short tight holes that basically feel the same. The deep 9 made up for this with some different types of holes, but the original 18 just doesn't have enough variety.

The deep 9 still needs some work, with no signs, poor tee surfaces, and some work to do to get the fairways in shape. It looks like all this is in progress though, so I don't think it'll be a con for too long.

Other Thoughts:

This course is nice and short for beginners, though there are lots of tight gaps, and punishment if you stray from the fairway that might frustrate beginners. More advanced players will have fun with their short game here, and will need accuracy to get those 2s, but there isn't a whole lot of challenge or uniqueness here.

If you're in the area, this course offers something different than the other nearby courses, and is worth a stop. Don't drive out of your way just for this one, but put it on your list for your Flip City trip.

Pros:

Very nice course overall, great example of a Michigan woods course. Benches, signs, and nice cement at every hole. This course is very well maintained, and provides a variety of shots for all players. Three nines all start by the parking lot, so it can be played a variety of ways. Great putting area between holes 10 and 18 by the parking lot.

Cons:

Some people might have a problem with this course never leaving the woods. All shots have a fairway, but none are without constrictions. Deep Nine might not be for novice or beginner players.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of my favorite Michigan courses. I got my first ace on hole 6, my first time playing the course. I have seen the course develop and change into a fantastic 27 holes. The variety of shots throughout the course gives everyone a challenge. The newest addition of the "deep nine" has great character and is far more challenging than the traditional front and back 9. Its location to the highway makes it a great stop on the way to other awesome near by courses (Flip City, Mason County, etc..).

Pros:

-great cement tee pads
-pretty cool wood signs with # and yardage. hand made
-super flow and easy to follow paths
-clean
-RESTROOM at the 9 hole intersection
-representative landscape of the area. sand, dirt, rolling hills
-new "deep" nine addition
-the rough is clear and forgiving
-new hole #6 on new nine!

Cons:

-repetitive holes that feel the same
-short holes. 160-290 a plenty.
-might miss the new deep nine to the right of tee #10

Other Thoughts:

What a good little course just north of Muskegon. The course is very representative of the somewhat flatter and sandy environment of southern/western Michigan. The course is broken up into three nine hole sections now. This includes the the new deep nine loop which can be readily missed to the right of tee #10 if not careful. A local showed it to me as I was finishing the reg 18.

The first nine play through some typical Michigan pines. Short anys and hyzers and straight lines on a flat landscape. This was ace alley to say the least, which was obvious by all the folks writing their ace on the yellow bands of the Innova baskets. Really? Can't you just sharpie your disc instead of telling the world how mediocre you are by being proud you sank a 150' "ace putt"? anywho...first nine, eh.

The second nine across the sand lot adds a bit more length through the trees and some slight elevation but it still feels mighty repetitive. You can't really blame the course designers as they used this land to the best of it's abilities.

The deep nine is going to be the gold of this course once complete. Still dirt tee pads but the holes now ebb and flow through some bigger trees and bigger spaces. Hole #6 is a complete shock when you get to it. It sits in a grassy valley of the forest and plays 600'+. COMPLETELY different from the rest of the course. Very reminiscent of a hole you would find at the Leviathan course in Ludington, Mi. Such a great hole. Could have played this a few times alone.

SUMMARY. A very nice course obviously taken care of by a great community. It's nothing special, but then again to have a disc golf course is better than not too. Definitely not a destination course, but one you might hit on the way to or from the great northern/western Michigan courses.

Rustic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Conveniently located about a mile off of Highway 31.
- Brooms & Hybrid Bucket/Trash-sacks at every hole. Tee signs are all intact. They're simple, yet effective.
- Benches made of logs at every hole. Paths between each hole were also lined with logs. I'm guessing that the trees that were cut down to make the fairways were then re-used to enhance the course. The fact that they weren't simply hauled off or burned is a credit to the course's designer.
- Teepads were better than average. Not overly long, but there was still ample room for any sort of run-up you could think of.
- Thanks to the aforementioned log-lined paths, it's literally impossible to get lost. When a new course in Michigan gets installed it dreams about someday being as worn in and user-friendly as this course is. The only possible time you could lose track of where you're going is near the parking lot between holes 9 & 10, but luckily there are convenient tree signs pointing you the right way.
- Despite there being a lot of holes ~200 ft, this is not a pitch & putt. You'll find yourself using your midrange a lot, but you'll need to be able to make it curve to suit the fairways. A forehand comes in handy, especially on hole #10.
- My wife liked that there was ample shade. This seems like it would be a good course to hit early in the afternoon before heading to the beach, if you're into that kind of thing.

Cons:

- Repetitive is the key word here. Lots of holes blend together. 5, 10, & 18 were the only holes that really stuck out in my mind. Hole 5 was a drive from the open into the trees type of hole. Hole 10 was the severe dogleg I mentioned earlier. Hole 18 features the most elevation on the course, you actually walk uphill and then downhill which is amazing in this particular part of Michigan. The rest were all 200-350 feet with slight alternating doglegs.
- It was easy to find errant throws which some would consider a plus, but this was to the point where there almost weren't any consequences to a bad shot. A seasoned DGer would probably have no problem shooting under par their first time here.

Other Thoughts:

- A solid yet unremarkable course with enough positives to make it slightly above average. It took me about an hour to play.
- There was a bulletin board and a port-a-potty at the beginning of the course. The bulletin board updated the status of the additional 9 holes that are being installed. 19-21 seemed to be playable but the rest were still under construction or unmowed. I look forward to seeing what they can do with the additional land.

A decidedly Up-North feel 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The directions to the course were spot-on and the parking area is large with a Kiosk, garbage barrels, and a Port-A-John on the premises. Everything was very clean and well thought out.

The course layout and trail markings are exceptional, with NO chance at getting lost. All three 9s (Front, Back, and Deep) circle back to a common crossing point just off the parking lot giving players a chance to head back to the car between loops for eats, beverages, bug spray, or clothing changes. This also allows for playing a short 9er or the same 9 twice. Even though the course is built on a sand dune, there was never any issue with loose sand or bad footing on the pathways. Almost all holes had some type of bench or chairs, brooms, and trash receptacles, and the relaxation spot at hole #9 was especially nice!. The tee signage was nicely done with etched-in hole #, footage, and directional lines, although the monochromatic color scheme was a little difficult to decipher for those of us with aging eyes. The cement tee pads were level, roomy and in great shape.

Hole design was quite nice given the property they had to work with. There was an even mix of straight, uphill, downhill, fading right or left, sharp right or left, and even "S" shaped fairways, and every tiny bit of elevation change available was put to good use. Distances of 187 to 394 makes a quick round here a very good possibility and keeps it mostly family and beginner friendly. Given the heavily wooded nature of this course, it was surprising that getting off the fairway was never a total disaster although there's rarely a clear route out and even overhand shots frequently aren't an option due to a low canopy in most places. The nature of the woods and brush here mean that lost discs shouldn't ever be a problem here, even when playing solo.

Highlight holes here include the almost J-hook shaped left on #4 with some intruding trees along the right edge that steal working room from your disc; the deceptively straight and open looking #5 and #7 that both require more disc control than you'd expect; the long tight #9 that opens into a sandy field; the evil, evil #16 with its tight fairway, scattered trees, fading right, and low ceiling; the curvy uphill #17; and the long S shaped #18.

Cons:

The lack of any real elevation changes, truly interesting design elements, or any open holes where you could really let them fly keeps this course from ranking much higher on the ratings list. And, while each hole had at least one very obvious and well-defined fairway, all but a couple of holes just felt like "more of the same".

The scorecard shows that a short tee is available for all the holes, but beyond the orange dots spray painted on rocks on the first 2 holes, I never saw any type of alternate tee markers on the rest of the holes (not that distances under 400' really need alternate tees).

The trash receptacles were a very interesting design (the top ring of a 5 gallon bucket as a holder for a 100 lb feed bag), but many of the feed bags were disintegrating, leaving trash scattered around in several places.

Other Thoughts:

***Updated after a second round***

I went to play a send round here with the express intention of doing a fresh review, uncolored by playing Flip City first. Unfortunately, my original review (basically) and first impressions stand. While hubby loved this course, I felt that the lack of any truly stand-out design elements made much of this course feel like just more of the same. By hole 12, I was saying "oh gee, look, more trees!" While individual hole design and course layout were both excellent, this course had none of the "Wow!!" factor of most of its closest neighbors; Branstrom has stunning scenery and terrain changes; Ludington has incredible variety and multiple great courses; Northend Riverside has great design, plenty of variety, and multiple tee options; and Flip City has.....well, all of the previous and sooo much more! Given the other available options, I'd play this if I was already in the area, but certainly wouldn't drive down just to play this course.

As of 9/6/09, the Deep 9 are not yet fully playable. According to locals, 19-21 are ready to play, and the remaining baskets are in, but the fairways are not fully cut or mowed at all, and the pathways between holes are unmarked and difficult to find.

Sundays may be very busy due to a pretty active league and course work groups following immediately after.

I remembered my camera this time and have posted pics of all holes now.

Cons:

-

Somewhat repetitive, but STILL fun & good practice.

Other Thoughts:

-
I really like this course. As soon as I played it I added in to my favorites. I just looked at is a perfect home course (if I lived close by), quick and great practice. It has very nice scenery and the turf and tree's make it an ideal course to play in windy and rainy conditions. The sandy clay surface soaks up the water and makes for interesting but predictable bounces off the turf. Each hole is unique and there is a really good variety of short and long shots. It is not the longest course but the course will test your accuracy and reward your distance. I found a path for every shot on the course and played through it quickly with no lost discs or time consumed looking for discs. There are also some really nice holes that are memorable and standouts. Again superb design.
I give outstanding props to the designer and township of Whitehall for putting this course in. It is easy to find of the highway and there is ample parking. This course, Flip, Ludington, Fremont, and Muskegon makes for an excellent destination in Disc golf in the area!!!

Also it is somewhat challenging to get under par here. If you do your doing really well. I have played much easier courses and this is probably right in the middle with a challenge.

Update June 2010
The Deep Nine is an excellent addition to this course. It is now a true 27 hole disc course that will challenge most skill levels yet keep it fun. It is still a course that turns quite a bit, you'll be going left or the hole is on the right, sometimes you'll see one straight. Very fun, good for most weather conditions, an awesome addition to the area!

Update Nov 2013
This course has been well
Maintained. Deep 9 makes this course a legit 27 hole course. I have really come to appreciate the subtle nuances this course offers. Imo it offers a lot and is highly underrated. A very fun course. Great challenge with deep 9. Great benches and maintainence. 4.5 is high but others have it far to low. An excelkent course! Much better than average.

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent use of available terrain (amazing how little space it takes up for the variety of holes)
Very well planned and laid out
Some of the most masterfully manicured paths between baskets I've ever seen...made it EXTREMELY easy to follow the course
Great mixture of hyzers and anhyzers in a great wooded context (so many wooded courses are redundant)
Very definable fairways--some are ultra tight (a favorite of mine)--but there is always at least one very clear path per hole, some have 2 or 3...it isn't just one of those wooded courses you just huck it and pray :)
Great risk and reward--if you get off the fairway you can really be punished
Good signage with a little diagram of the hole
Forces many different shots and precise disc selection to get the appropriate throw

Cons:

Not many...I like this kind of course though...I would agree that beginners would be frustrated but that's not a "con" in my mind, just a point of fact...
It's pretty flat too--I wouldn't classify it as having real "elevation" changes, but it's not the fault of the course, it's just a pretty flat area.

Other Thoughts:

Some may knock it for being a "short course" because there are no long holes...but the excellent design and challenging yet very doable narrow fairways make up for it

All in all, I would seek this course out again if I'm in the Grand Rapids area

But the more I played this course the more it grew on me and I wanted to play this course almost as much as I wanted to play out at Flip. This is a good course to go to and learn how to throw period because it is so wooded that if you can play this whole course without hitting a tree you are good. There is a lot of technical play on this course to try avoiding the trees when throwing, but it is a great way to play and learn. I think that is one of the reasons why this course grew on me so fast. There are no real big holes on this course, but the part of the course where it will come and get you is all the trees. All in all this is a fun course to go and play, I would recommend this course to anyone that plays.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 10, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course consists of three separate nine hole loops which all end at the parking lot. The Front Nine consists of narrow fairways through a pine forest, the back nine has deciduous woods, and newer 'Deep Nine' which is longer and more difficult than the main 18. The 'Deep Nine' has longer holes and one fairway (Hole 6), with new cement tees added in late 2011. Mostly mid-range play with some longer drives crossing a sandy strip with power lines. Contrary to some other reviews, a couple of holes have to some room to drive in (Holes 7 and 8 are the among the best). Main 18 hole course is an easy 75-90 minute mid-range workout with less noise and traffic than most lower Michigan courses. Hole 16 (Back Nine) has a great downhill shot through trees that has a 350 foot pathway for RHBH throwers. Sandy topography is actually a bonus compared with other muddier area courses (Branstrom, McGraft, Rycenga), with few puddles even after a recent rain. Though most holes are tightly wooded, this makes the course the best in the area in bad weather.

Marked better and easier to follow than most courses. Excellent tee pads and good baskets. Terrific volunteer work establishing easy to follow trails. Benches on all tees on Main 18 (very nice feature), as well as a few in the Deep Nine. Relative seclusion (especially the Deep Nine), free admission. Some work has gone into the Deep Nine in 2012, and more Holes connecting to the Deep Nine are rumored.

Cons:

Too many tightly wooded fairways, and somewhat short overall on the main 18. Also lacks some diversity, though the course itself has unique characteristics of the area. Course is a 'slow burn' with the first two holes in particular being unimpressive, but impresses more later in the course.

Work has continued on the back nine and on other parts of the course. Maintenance and tee pads are terrific, edging the course up in rating for 2014. Though many of the holes aren't quite the caliber of a 3.5-level course, the quality of the best front and deep nine holes as well as a 27-hole experience, better water drainage and poor-weather play lift this course.

Other Thoughts:

The best course in Muskegon county, and better than any course in Ottawa or Kent County. Kudos to Whitehall Township for creating this course.

Pros:

Very nice cement tee pads, benches on all holes, tee markers with distances, an info box with score cards. The course is kept up nicely, no trash around, Brooms on all tee pads, It is obvious that much attention goes into keeping this place nice. The figure 8 layout is genious, you can stop back at your car if you need to after the front 9, or even just start on 10 if you want to.

Very challenging for all levels of play, bring your bag of tricks.

Cons:

Tight fairways may discourage newcomers,

Other Thoughts:

The layout is fantastic, you begin in tight pines and weave your way around until it opens up into a few open areas and then out of the pines and into towering Oaks with some elevation change. This course gets criticized for being short, but believe me, it plays much longer than the card reads. There are defined lanes on every hole, but if you miss them you can get into trouble. If you play here you will definitely get the opportunity to throw a variety of shots. Anyone can go out a chuck a disc as far as they can on an open course, this course makes you think and shows true skill. Great place. Kudos to Whitehall Township.

Pros:

This course is very clean and well taken care of. The baskets and the tee boxes are in very good conditions and there is a map for the course, but it flows so nicely you don't really need one. There is a map and distance of each hole at the tee box and sometime a broom to clean of the tee pad. Also I liked that the 9th and 18th hole brought you back out to the beginning of the course, so you can play the front of back 9. It is very wooded so if you like tight shots and threading the needled this is a good course for you.

Cons:

Not a lot of open drives from the tee box. There are also a lot of trees so most of you shots have to be very accurate. None of the holes are above 400 ft long, there mostly short hole through wooded areas. I like to see a little most variety in the holes, but I think they did the best they could with the land they had. Maybe clear out some more trees so your drive is a little easier.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course and I would play it again if I was in the area. It is a great par 3 course, very clean and well maintained. I almost got an ACE on 15; it is 200ft strait shot hole through some tight trees. I hit the chains and the disc just out. For that I will never forget this course.
