Ups and Downs Plus Variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of ups and downs in the course (for texas). There is a variety of different types of holes.

Cons:

The breeze off the river can be hard to handle. This course can also be a little crowded. The whole just past the old fountain has too much ground cover.

Other Thoughts:

It's cool to hear the animal chatter from the near by zoo.

Lovely Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Beautiful multi-purpose park with mature trees along a large river
- Significant elevation change on many holes, requiring unique shot shapes
- Creek behind many shorter holes, adding risk when attacking the basket
- A nice variety of wooded and open holes, although each type is all grouped together

Cons:

- A surplus of short, left-handed holes, starts to feel repetitive
- Very busy
- Sprawling park with windy roads, difficult to locate first hole

Other Thoughts:

The scenery at this park was great. It felt clean and peaceful, and the locals were friendly. We came upon a herd of Baylor cliches with their raybans and croakies, but they let us play through.

William Cameron Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful Course! Lots of trees to shoot around/through. There are a lot holes that you can flick which I appreciate being a RHFH thrower. Good mix of long and short holes. Tee signs are beautiful and more importantly accurate and also available at every hole.

Cons:

It's a busy park. If you go in the afternoon you may be waiting at every tee box and there will be a lot of people playing soccer/football/catch on holes 14-23.

Excellent all-around course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 13, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- 23 holes with all kinds of shots. You'll encounter uphill, downhill, wooded, open, and a small smattering of water hazards.
- The course is short enough for beginners to enjoy themselves, but also interesting enough to keep the attention of more experienced players. Birdie/ace runs galore, if you have the ability for it.
- Restrooms (parking area, 15, 19, and 21) and water (4, 12, everywhere that has restrooms) are available at numerous points throughout the course.
- Good tee signs, still very new and in good condition. The signs are almost superfluous; you can usually see the basket from the tee.
- The course is split into "pods" - 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20/21/23, and 22 out on its own. If you're short on time, it's very easy to piece together a custom round.
- Hole 23 in the uphill configuration provides a wonderful twist at the end.
- Local tip: there is a spring in between holes 4 and 5 that runs at around 60 degrees. It's a great place to refill your water bottles, especially on a hot summer day.

Cons:

- Course length: most of the holes are in the 200's, and only two holes are above 350'. In some areas, the hole lengths start to feel monotonous.
- Some of the walks between "pods" are long and confusing for a first-time player. Consult the course map or a local for help.
- Mob golf can be an issue on evenings and weekends when the weather is nice. Course etiquette is okay - some groups are bad, others great.
- Parking can be difficult if there's an event going on at the Redwood Shelter. If that's the case, there are other parking areas available (mainly the 4th Street lot, between holes 4, 5, and 10).
- There is poison ivy on the course.
- Some holes are starting to see slope erosion and slipping hazards. Be careful.
- Holes 15-19 are in a "multi-use" area. It's very common to see people barbecuing, picnicking, or playing soccer in the middle of the fairways.
- The Brazos River loves to consume errant throws on 22.

Other Thoughts:

Cameron Park is the most popular course in Waco, and for good reason. It's well-designed, there's something in it for all skill levels, and the facilities are good and improving. I'd definitely recommend this course to anyone in or visiting Waco, along with what's left of Brazos Park East.

Cameron Park 23 hole course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has just about any type of hole you'll ever see in Disc Golf. The First 14 holes are challenging. They range from uphill doglegs, to straight downhill thru tree canopy. There are narrow, wooded holes, and even nice open field holes. Then it really gets fun. 15-23 for the most part are wide open field holes. On 21 & 23 I can really work on distance as the holes are straight with minimal tree threat.

Cons:

There are a few cons, but overall this is a great course. However:
1.) Many of the holes back the creek so if you overthrow, your roll could land you in some water.
2.) 22 can also land you in the water, running parallel with the Bravos River.
3.) Also, the park doesn't really trim......ever. They are going for the natural feel I guess, but its still a pain.

Besides that it's a good course with many different looks.

Other Thoughts:

I feel when I become a regularly score par on this course, I can play well anywhere.

William Cameron Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great variety of shots. From uphill(#1,6,10,13) to downhill (#3,8,12,14). Heavily wooded (#3,6,7,8,9) to open (#15,17,19,20sb,23) and everything in between. A creek to the Brazos comes into play on holes #4,5,14,20lb and then the Brazos river itself can possibly snatch your disc on windy days for holes #16,19,22. The course seems to have some pretty good upkeep and none of the fairways are overgrown. It also seems that what trees ARE in the fairway would just ruin the hole if they were taken away. Last week the baskets for holes #14,15,16,22,23 were relocated to nearby locations. The best of which is the basket for #16, which was just a straight-ahead, there it is type of hole before. Now, it has been moved to directly between two big live oaks that are only a few feet apart, giving the hole something unique that it previously lacked.
My personal favorite hole at the park has to be Hole #8. That hole involves teeing off through a cluster of slender cedars, hoping to make it anywhere near the basket, (which is placed out of sight, to the left, and over a hill at the end of the fairway). Also, the bathrooms are located in very reasonable places in the course, (one in the parking lot for hole #1 and another by the playground at hole #19).

Cons:

The signage for this course is unhelpful and as of the last time I went, there are only about 5 holes that actually have signs. At some points, the next box can be hard to find. This is most evident going from #4 to #5, which are a good distance apart, and isn't helped by the fact that the box for #5 can't be seen until you're right up on it. Holes #15-19 are all placed in and around a multi-use area (field, playground, picnic pavillion), which is filled with non-dgers on the weekend; most of which were in the fairways when I went last time. Hole #15 is the worst in that regard because the basket, as of last week, has been moved even closer to the center of the multi-use field. The relocation of basket 22 is kind of lame and the relocation of basket 23 is an atrocity. #22 was just moved closer to the box to make a more reasonable par 3. #23, (which WAS one of the best holes at the park; a neat little par 3 where you had to throw straight ahead and then curve off to the right and up a ten foot hill through lots of little trees and all kinds of thorny nastiness to get to the basket), is now a boring par 3 where you throw straight ahead in the open and try not to hit the people at the barbecue pit by which the basket is now located. No longer on the hill, no longer through the trees, just straight ahead and go get it.

Other Thoughts:

Even with some of the recent negative changes, Cameron Park is still an overall awesome course to take on. Bringing a map is a must for any first visit. If you do happen to go on the weekend and do not like crowds and yelling "fore!" all of the time, Holes #15-19 can probably be skipped for a solid 18 holes at one of the most fun courses in the area. Overall, I would suggest going on a weekday to make sure you can play all 23 and enjoy everything Cameron Park has to offer.

I heart Cameron 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I love this park for many reasons! This is a great course that has tons of different shots all over the place. There are your big boomers where you can air it out and then there are places where you have to hit your line or its a disaster! The terrain is great and the grass is always well taken care of for those who like to roll and for those who like skip shots. The park is always clean for the most part too. I think that this course is a good blend for the newer players and for the more pro/adv player and it makes it fun for all. The elevation is used well here just as it has been used everywhere else in Waco. The baskets are good and there are good concrete teepads and sometimes 2 on some of the holes. The course flows very well and is easy to follow. Makes for a great day of golf with the other 2 courses in town! Lots of shade which helps on a hotter day.

Cons:

The signage sucks for the most part. Where there are signs they are just screwed into a nearby tree and they are just numbers, no pic or anything like that. The water on 9 is pretty nasty. Parking can be an issue but with construction taking place that doesnt seem like it will be a problem.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 9 is super sweet and can either put a smile on your face or make you cry when it lands in the nasty water behind it. Play this and the "bEast" during the hot of the day and dont forget Woodway early or late. And dont forget to test your arm out and try to cross the Brazos. Many holes are missing now due to construction.

My first and still my favorite! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is almost the perfect balance of "easy" holes for beginners and more challenging holes for advanced players. My group plays this course more than the others in Waco because of this versatility. We go with girls that don't have big arms and play way less than the competitive guys; yet they can still have fun and be competitive after drives. But, this course is still no joke. Some specifics include: the long tee @ 15 can be a pain that might put you in a creek, 9 probably claims the most discs in thickets of bamboo if you can't control your drive, and most holes have trees that make sure you aren't too wild with any throw yet are open and very playable. Those sound like cons but I just consider them challenges rather than outright obstructions that cause headaches.

Cons:

Signage is inconsistent. They made an attempt to get new universal signs for all holes, but they are small metal signs that are drilled into trees so not all holes have them because not all tees have a tree close by to do so. Crowds are consistently present so just be patient because most of them are cool. Along the same lines, the park is crowded with non golfers on the back 9 on weekends. Also, summertime foliage makes the course more difficult. I prefer winter-early spring when less green is on the course.

Other Thoughts:

As my title says, this course introduced me to the sport and I still go back to get a rare combo of the ability to work on technique and fundamentals yet challenge myself at the same time. You need to make time to play this if you're from the Metroplex or Austin.

My favorite course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great scenery with the trees and river; good variety of holes from fairly tight to wide open; beginner friendly; good elevation changes on the front nine.

Cons:

Can get very crouded on weekends and weekdays after work; large groups of 6 to 8 people fairly common.

Other Thoughts:

My all-time favorite course. Beautiful scenery, nice variety of holes, beginner friendly in that this is not an overly long or difficult course.

One of my favs 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 18, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very fun course. First 9 short but loads of fun. Lot's of nice elevation changes and trees. The city keeps it up nicely. Lotsa birdie opps in the first 9. Great hit a squirell games can be played. Holes 10 thru 14 are pretty open giving you a chance to launch a bomb if you have one. 15 thru 18 have a nice skill level to them. The howler monkeys in the background of 10 thru 14 are nice.

Cons:

Don't go close to dark. Crowded at times but that also gives you a chance to meet other DGers or " relax ".

Other Thoughts:

Probally the most played course in Waco. Bang the chains!

Fun course! Great variety! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 3, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is stocked full of holes that have you shooting uphill and downhill and winding your disc through trees. There is a fantastic variety of holes offered on this course. The old area of the park looks like it has a lot of history as you can see old structures that the years have slowly decayed. There is a creek that runs around through some of the course. There was one hole where a make-shift soccer field was being played on right in the middle of our fairway. They were cool though and stopped their game to let us play through. 17 runs parallel to the Brazos river and has trees all the way down the fairway...very tough hole. If you play 17, pour some out for my lost flat top roc that is probably still moving slowly south in the Brazos river. This course has concrete tee pads, good baskets, and is easy to navigate except from holes 4 to 5 and from 14 to 15. You have to walk under the bridge to the newer park area to get from 14 to 15 and you have to walk past hole 10's tee across the street to get to hole 5. A lot of the holes are really short making for multiple birdie opportunites and some ace runs. There are still plenty of tough holes on the course to keep things interesting.

Cons:

This course was pretty crowded when we played it. Large groups were good about letting us play through though. The course has recently been redone and is still in need of accurate sigs. The concrete tee pads have the hole number painted on them though so you can be sure you are in the right place. Distances would be a very nice addtion.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very fun course to play. If you go to Waco, make sure you play this course and then head across the river to play the Beast on the east side for a much, much more challenging round of disc golf. (when it opens back up) Woodway park is also in Waco by the lake and is a fun course also.
