Movement in top 10

interestingly the course is marked 'unplayable' due to water just 3 days ago so I wonder what the status was when Knobby played in april. I would just hope someone doesnt go all the way out there and play when its marked unplayable and then review the course lowly for standing water.

It made me think - we dont downgrade northern courses like beaver ranch or maple hill even though they are unplayable due to snow in the winter; so why downvote a course near a river thats unplayable in the rainy months? Why is standing wet water different from standing frozen water?

My guess is folks are well aware of where/when there's going to be snow in the north; but maybe less folks aware of where/when the rain is going to cause issues. Then they show up at HB and are surprised to see water everywhere.

It was probably soggy if Knobby was there in April - Spring is brutal on that course. The seasonal aspct is a fair one, though I'll add that I played Harmony Bends in November with minimal rain the couple of weeks prior and there were still some standing water areas on hole 10, so it's not limited to rainy months. It's a beautiful plot of land, but it's so susceptible to water.

imagine being a course designer and having your designed course fall out of the number 1 spot... but, the new number one course is also a course you designed.

I have a road trip planned to DFW in a couple weeks, I hope the weather cooperates and i can play one or both of the Selah courses. 4 years ago i was on site at Selah and couldnt throw because of am world doubles.

re: Harmony Bends, I asked on FB and will ask here...is it best to try and play there in early June or late October? I'd be driving there from 7 hrs away.

My gut tells me October, personally. Temperatures will likely be nicer, and might be dryer as well. June could still see rainy season-like conditions.

I think this^^^. Most courses like that have to be planned out, and a last minute gully washer can ruin those plans/hotel reservations, possibly car rental, etc.

When I play the MI courses I love every year (Toboggan, Beast, Devils Den), I don't plan those trips in JAN. :) If it rains there, I can still play them. If it rains bad in Columbia two days before I get there---I may be out of luck on a number of holes.

There was standing water around the #2 and #5 White and blue tees and in spots along #10 and a few other spots in the bottom part of the course. The small creek on #1 and #18 was low enough to cross on the stepping stones and even when I fell in near the #1 basket, was only wet from the thigh down after hitting a knee on one of the rocks, so not too deep. Was very playable, plus I played from the red tees. Recent heavy rain could make #1 unplayable with no way to cross that creek. #10-#15 is in the flood plain for the larger creek.

I personally don't usually play in the snow, but it is usually walkable unless it has too much ice on it.

Who didn't like your 'low' rating of 4.0?

I'm roadtripping in late July early august and was planning to hit Harmony Bends . I hope it will be ok then.

Just keep an eye on the forecast for Columbia for the previous week as well as local facebook groups. If there are issues with the course, they'll be noted online.

I'd like to see you name 199 courses better than Harmon Hills.

I'll wait.

Let's say this, HH isn't the best course even in Tennessee. That goes to The Clayton's IMO.

In my personal experience (And I've only played around 80 thus far), I would put:

Idlewild
Flip
Hornet's Nest
Coyote Trace RIP
Holler
Hidden Ridge (many of the same faults currently as Harmon)
Claytons

Each in front of Harmon. I don't have anything against the course. I think it is great. I just think it is severely over-rated. Things that could improve: Signage, teepads/areas, next tee signs. Granted it has been about 5 years since I played it. So, maybe all of these things are better now?

the claytons what are you talkin about

it starts off as a banger then after like hole 8 you death march to get to the worst holes which also have additional death marches and finish no where near the parking lot

claytons is not better than a 3.5/5 even on a extremely generous day and would be better as a 9 hole banger with just the wooded holes

lastly there is criss cross flow issues on the front 9

Lulz…took you two months to come up with the first 8 of your 199. Guess I'll only have to wait 4 more years for you to finish :)

And yes, the teepads, signs and baskets have all been improved in the last 5 years. Should it be in the top 10? Maybe, maybe not. Gotta give it extra "cool points" for the cave pool though.

Whhaatttt? You're not even going to mention the new baskets are Volunteer Orange? Really verifies that you are in East TN!! LOL :D
Hopefully the plastic vinyl tee signs brought in for the 2021 Pro Master Worlds will be there for a while, they are definitely an improvement over the legacy signs. The tee pads were also very well done!
I missed the cave pool, was that on 12, 17 or did I miss it entirely?

The pool is in between the fairways of 8 & 9. I think they say the water is a constant 56 degrees. It is hidden in a cave and it's not an area many people would shank a disc into. I missed it entirely until someone showed it to me. It's small but big enough for 3-5 people to swim in at once if they can stand the cold.

You're right, I should have mentioned the new baskets are orange and sparkly since some people actually rate courses higher based on superficial appearance of tee signs and baskets rather than course design.

I played both Selah courses on Friday. I was very disappointed on how bad a shape they were in. i paid a $25 dollar greens fee and the grass was shin high in the fairway. The grounds were not wet and the grounds other than on the course itself, were fantastic. Big downed branches were in a few fairways and none of the trees in the fairways were trimmed around the base. Carts are now $50 by the way. If these type of conditions continue, they dont belong in the top 25 or even top 100 for that matter. even in prime conditions, i question if i would have given either course a 4.5. I think Houck's designed Hobbs and IDGC Jackson are far superior than to this pair.

I've played them both and I liked Hobbs farm better as well. Looking forward to seeing how harmony bends stacks up

This was interesting to hear. Looking forward to your reviews. I've been eyeballing Selah for awhile now and to be honest, it just doesn't look that appealing. Either of them. Bucksnort is next on my top ten hit list, once Caliber gets the second course in fully that'll be next. Selah and BRP are questionable top tens. BRP isn't even top ten in MN, much less the world.

Lulz. Probably longer than 4 years at this rate. I maybe get to play 3 or 4 new courses a year on average given my work/family/building up the disc golf scene in my hometown. Probably 1 per year is going to be better than Harmon.

I am playing Milo over the 4th of July weekend. So, I guess you can go ahead and put it on the same list.
