PDGA iPhone app

Anyone know how to get a course added to the database? Handyman Ace Hardware course in Fairborn Ohio is not listed. It was just installed last November, but it a pro caliber course that I now consider to be my home course. With that said, I play it a lot but as of right now I couldnt use the PDGA app to keep score.

If you go to 'Start Round', in the top right there's an option to "Add Course". You can add your course info and save so you can use the app to keep score. I don't know how the round ratings work w/ custom courses though.

@ 811rv
Reported your issue regarding course name length. I agree with your issue needing some sort of fix. It's always tough in design figuring out how much space you need to allow for certain data elements since there's no cap on monster course names. I have this issue processing course names in TD reports. One quick fix for this and other databases where this comes up would be to revise the names in the Course Directory so the differentiating words are the beginning rather than the end such as: East Kendall Indian Hammocks DGC and West Kendall Indian Hammocks DGC

Yeah that would work for now. Eventually one can revise the app to allow user to scroll the course name sideways.

We've already got some options being considered such as putting the course name at the top of the Overview section rather than in the gray band at the top.

I see that now. Thanks. But I'm wondering about how to actually get the course in the PDGA directory so people don't have to add it. It's in the directory on the website... Don't know why it's not on the app. Hopefully the little bugs can eventually be fixed with just a simple update. Still a cool app!

Every course in the PDGA Directory that was in there last night is accessible thru the app today. It's only changes made today that aren't available yet. Are you saying you can't find the course listing with the app search function?

Yep. Do a search for the zip code 45324. That is the zip for Fairborn OH. The top line on the search results lists a blank course 1.7 miles away. That was probably supposed to be Handyman Ace Hardware DGC.

I have problem trying to save course to my list via course search. I was able to save courses to my list via course map. Also when I type something to search course, the virtual keyboard just stuck there. Need a key/button to hide the virtual keyboard.

Thanks

How bout having a putt scoring spot per hole too, so that those of us that keep track of our putts per hole can do so?

The keyboard sticking is an intermittent problem that has been maddening for the programmer to fix. He has a request into Apple to help fix this. In the mean time, if you get the keyboard sticking while doing a course search, go back and Start Round. When you see your course list, tap on the blue arrow on the right side of a course. The Edit screen comes up and clears the keyboard.

The other keyboard sticking that sometimes happens is if you enter a custom course length for calculating ratings at the end of the round. Clicking on Email Round can be used to clear the keyboard if that happens.

Two issues have been fixed that were reported yesterday. The ratings calculation now handles courses with other than 18 holes properly. Also, the long course name problem has been fixed. What will happen is long names will have an ellipsis (...) inserted in the middle so you can see the first words/letters and last words/letters of a long name. So that should handle it unless the only thing different between two long course names is a word or letters in the middle that get omitted by the ellipsis.

The plan is to provide V1.03 by this weekend with these corrections and possibly the keyboard sticking fix depending on Apple's help. The Handyman course problem appears to not be the app but the data transfer between the PDGA Course Directory and the app course database so hopefully that will be fixed independent of V1.03.

^And, DGCR's database stays up to date due to its wiki format :)

Man, was really excited for this app until I downloaded it and checked out some of my local courses. Hornet's Nest is listed as having 26 holes, when in reality it has 2 layouts of 18 holes. I don't understand how I'm supposed to keep score when the scorecard just goes from 1-26, and they are all par 3's, which neither layout is all par 3s. Same thing with Renny, 21 holes, all par 3s. I was interested to see how this app handled courses with multiple tees and layouts, as the apps I've used in the past had options for multiple tees, but you couldn't edit the par for each hole based on what tee you're playing. Looks like this is even a bigger issue with the PDGA app. Looks like I'm going to be custom creating all of the Charlotte area courses even though they are all in there, which I'd imagine will probably jack up the round rating stuff. Oh well.

You will have to "create" your own course for each layout. You can adjust the par for each hole while doing this.

Something I just noticed: I keep track of my putts so I'm just gonna put how many putts I have in the hole notes option. Might be a pain transferring them on here, but oh well.

So far, I think the app is really cool. I do have a couple of suggestions, however:

For Penalties, could you have specific initials for the penalty instead of just "p" for penalty? For example - if it's an OB, list it as a "P - OB" or use different colors for each type of penalty. *Also, the P should be marked on the wide version of the scorecard (which would be made easier if the full scorecard boxes were bigger)

Hole notes: After you choose the course, you get a menu of options. It would be nice if one of those options would be "hole by hole notes" that would lay out as a list. This would be much more handy for reviewing your entire notes from a round, than going through those notes one hole at a time. I think these notes are very handy to figure out hole stategy and to review what discs you used (or should have used) for that hole.

^You must remember that most people are dumb. If there are 30 awesome features and one is glitchy, they will rate it 1 star for that glitch because it IMMEDIATELY becomes the end of the world. It's a good app, it will just take some time to perfect.

Come on, this is a REVIEW site I thought you would know that by now :)
