Hi all I just found this forum today and here is my first post. I know this has probably been asked a million times and discussed ad nauseam but I need some help selecting a driver or 2.

I just started playing this year and I have only played approx 15 rounds in my life. I went out and bought a starter 3 pack at a local sporting goods store. In my 2nd round ever I lost my driver in a lake so I went out and bought a wraith. I have been using this and I have been happy with it but today I launched one into the woods. I have no idea what happened it went FARRRR right and the disc is gone. So when I got home I started looking at all of these disc and now I am confused. I don't understand what is considered a hard thrower and such so its making it difficult to buy a new one. So now I am looking to pick up probably 2 different discs so that's where all of you come in.

I am a bigger guy so I assume I throw the disc somewhat hard but I don't know what is considered hard. Today I was on a hole that was a par 4, 447 feet slightly uphill and I was approx 75 feet from the pin on my drive. I am basing this off of the sign at the tee so no flaming if this is highly doubtful and if it is weak also please no flaming.

I believe I throw it sidearm? but I don't know what sidearm is considered. I am right handed and I throw the disc across my body from left to right if that makes any sense.

I think what I am looking for is one that I could throw long and one that is a little safer for the narrow fairways.

If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I have been getting better over the summer and I am joining a league on Wednesday so I am trying to take this somewhat seriously so any help would be awesome.

I use a Z Flash. It goes almost dead straight for me, with little fade, and is a nice long driver. Also, check out the Stalker. Both made by Discraft.

And if you need a new putter, check out a Discraft Magnet

If you're throwing from left to right, that is backhand. I also suggest getting a Stalker, and a Fairway driver to work on form like Innova's Teebird

How far does that Wraith go for you?

If it's less than 300", I would grap a Pro Leopard and a DX Teebird for your first drivers, both in the 168g range.

Those 2 will teach you the differences in understable/overstable discs while both still being fairly easy to control.

And both are easy on the wallet, in case you lose them again.

I am going to apologize in advance for some really dumb questions I will ask in this thread. I have become addicted to this game and are trying to learn everything there is to learn in a short time period.

so sidearm is where you throw it like a sidearm baseball pitcher? I tried to do that but my disc is very wobbly. LOL now I feel dumb, hence why i just added the first line of this post.

Are any brands better than others over all and are there any that just should never be touched? All of my local stores seem to sell Innova discs.

Last dumb question for now. When I am looking at buying discs online there are different weights. Does this effect how the disc goes or is this purely dependent on what the person can handle throwing?

WOW you guys are great and quick. I had to edit this post because there were a bunch of replies while I was typing this.

you mean when I lose them again!!

Sidearm is like a sidearm pitcher or a forehand in tennis.

I say stick to Innova and Discraft for now just for simplicity's sake, but there are a lot of good brands to try out later on.

Lighter weights will go farther with less effort. I like mine around 168g. I think you should get some discs in that range b/c that is kind of the middle of the weight spectrum. That will help you figure out if you want lighter or heavier.

The bag I suggested is a good beginner's bag. A lot of the guys on here will say start off with just a mid-range and a putter, but I feel like that is not necessary.

Typically the lighter the disc the more understable it will be (understable means it will go right for you)
The heavier the disc the more overstable it will be (overstable will go left for you)

Sidearm/Forehand (both the same thing) is like a sidearm in baseball, yes. People also refer to this as the flick (not to be confused with the Discraft Flick, which is an actual disc)

There are many different companies, the two biggest are Innova and Discraft. Small lesser known companies include Gateway, Latitude 64, MVP, ABC Discs, Discmania, and Vibram. There probably are a couple others I am forgetting and leaving out.

As for which brands to buy, that's all opinion based. At this stage you will go through a lot of experimentation to find what works best for you.

You've came to the right place for sure, check out the technique section specifically this thread, there's a lot of great info.

Replacing your original driver, I'm assuming it was a 150 gram Innova Leopard, would be better for you in the long run than anything.

If you really want to improve your distance and do it right, the Technique section of this forum is the best place to spend your time.

ok after all of this info so quick I am ready for skins and my first night round. Thank you everyone for this great info. I feel so much more informed than I did a half hour ago.

It makes me jealous when I watch someone throw a disc to the right around a tree then it goes left and then right again. WTF how is that even possible. I need to be that good, like right now. Thanks again all I will consider my options you all gave me.

Things like that come with time and practice. One of the best things you can do is hit an open field, and do some practice throws with your discs when you get them.

honestly man, if I could do it all over again, I would only throw rocs and putters until I could throw 300+ feet. However, I know all new players want to throw drivers so a leopard or a stalker are both good choices.

I truly believe it is better for your game in the long run if you are money with your mids and putters. Hell, if I could throw a roc 400 ft, I wouldn't carry a single driver in my bag
