No respect for DG?

Nikko has shown support for NORML but I'm to blame for getting lit before I go play a round? If Patty McBible wants to look down on me for that I don't want her mainstream support for disc golf. That's just how I feel. Too many people making personal judgements on others for what they perceive to be bad.

it's about the children, bro. i'm one of the biggest advocates of the leaf you'll ever meet but it's illegal and if you want respect from park goers, blazing a pipe with your buddies and choking loudly is a dumbass move

100% agree with this. I don't smoke anymore, and I also don't care if people do it. But if you have to get high to play DG, do it before you get to the course. It blows my mind how many times people have to hit the pipe during an hour and a half round. I know from personal experience that that isn't necessary, I was a pothead for a long time.

Traveling around the Pensacola/Mobile area for a few days playing what courses I can. Got rained out yesterday afternoon, went to the library, was talking to some people I met about disc golf. After a few minutes I called it "frisbee golf", only to have them say they thought I was talking about "ball" golf until I said frisbee.
Its just the way it is.

Its funny how the finances tie into the popularity of a sport. My other interests lie in motorsports, and its amzing how fast drifting has taken off. Formula Drift has televised events and tire companies for sponsors. The big difference there is the cost of entry into the sport. You can't walk into Dick's Sporting Goods and pick up a '93 240sx and a set of 4 tires for 20 bucks, the day before your first event. The product promotion is what draws sponsors, and a set of even top tier plastic just doesn't bring big money.

Cigarettes and a bullet/1 hitter are the way to go. Covers the smell and makes it a little bit less obvious to the people who aren't cool with it or kids. Though usually when I'm around kids at the park I make an excuse to walk away.. go to my car and sit in it for a minute, act like I'm gonna take a pee, etc.

At Oak Grove park in my home town, where the longest hole might possibly be 260, and its surrounded by fenced in back yards and houses, not 50 feet off the fairway. No, it doesnt matter if its a nuke or a leopard, if you shank it, its hitting a house. In some cases youre correct, the course was surpassed by disc technology. In other cases, its poor planning, or a combination of both. Do they need to be removed?
FWIW, Oak Grove was installed in 1979. Leopards didn't come around until about 20 years later.

We really can't blame the designers of that era for not having that kind of foresight.

I agree it just seems a bunch of people around here act like everyone in the park is either Tommy Chong Jr. or cares that they'll be mistaken for him. I don't need respect from park goers just common courtesy that I show them. The weed isn't the problem and it never has been. It's the morons. It's always the morons. They ruin everything.

Do that about 999 times and we will call it a small sample test. Just start off by saying that I play a game once known as frisbee golf, but is now called Disc golf. Most people too which I have said this usually ask "What is the difference between a disc and a frisbee?". Also some are in popular or old parks. Just mention said park and the metal looking things with chains that you might have seen used as a meat cooker, that usually gets an oh yeah.

we had a NORML appearance at an A tier here last year. I gotta say. I thought it was trashy and tacky. When casuals walk up, to a very crowded park and see a huge event and parked at hole 1 is a giant NORML event going on, not the best look.

also smoke shop teams...way to pigeon hole an entire sport. i dont play those sponsored events.

Just food for thought here folks....

Number of U.S. courses with an install date of 1975-1989: 221
That's one course going in the ground on average every 24.7 days

Number of U.S. courses with an install date of 1990-1994: 126
That's one course going in the ground on average every 14.4 days

Number of U.S. courses with an install date of 1995-1999: 375
That's one course going in the ground on average every 4.87 days

Number of U.S. courses with an install date of 2000-2002: 311
That's one course going in the ground on average every 3.52 days (every 84.5 hours)

Number of U.S. courses with an install date of 2003-2005: 585
That's one course going in the ground on average every 1.87 days (every 45 hours)

Number of U.S. courses with an install date of 2006-2008: 797
That's one course going in the ground on average every 1.38 days (every 33 hours)

Number of U.S. courses with an install date of 2009-2011: 976
That's one course going in the ground on average every 1.12 days (every 27 hours)

Number of U.S. courses installed in 2011 alone: 313

And I'm sure we've lost a few along the way, (there are also about 280 courses with no install date), but this emphasizes my point. More courses were installed last year in this country than in the first 15 years of disc golf's existence combined.

I'd say that's a sign that were quite well respected by the public.

I agree about the way it was done but it's a legit group with a legit cause. So what's the problem with their sponsorship? Blame the TD not the organization that is fighting for what they believe in. If prohibition were still in place I wonder if Nascar fans would be pissed that beer is always associated with their sport.

On a side note. I am going to strive for smoke shop sponsorship now. Free incense for life!

Me too. I will go out of my way to play at an event if NORML or a smoke shop is sponsoring it.

Great stats/facts scarpfish. We are definitely spoiled now compared to the old days, but we still need more.:D

Good stats scarp, id say if anything DG is hitting its stride and thats a great thing. But being respected as an activity and being a respected competetive athletic activity are different. Id be willing to bet that those numbers are about on par with new playgrounds, walking trails etc. Im sure most of those are not DG only designated parks. Most places arent fortunate enough to afford to allocate that much land for something that wont bring a return but for the ones that do thats great.
Like i said before, more parks are always gonna be better than less.

Thread jack commence!
Would you have the means to look up what amount of them are pay to play/private and such? I bet its a small number but im curious, i think that dg will inevitably drift that way in the future, was curious if there was a trend in previous years until now

More local clubs need to have fundraisers to get land. Can you do a nine holer on 4.5 acres? It's in the middle of nowhere Kansas and I was going to make a shooting range on it but I like dual purpose designs. Combine the two into a new XTREME DG adventure. Then I can market that idea for Kevlar disc golf bags.

This whole issue is a tough one. Its kind of romantic to play a sport very few outsiders have heard of, you can get up on a Sunday morning hit a course and play out in nature completely free of green fees and a ton of people.

With respect comes a lot of things disc golfers today may not really want.

I respect those that play the game and are truly passionate about it, but be happy for now with the charm our sport holds now. If it gets big and Nike comes out with a disc golf shoe and mainstream attention soon follows, then enjoy that too.

Just throw discs and ride out the good vibes.
