Longest Courses in the Country

worse than "long for the sake of being long" is changing a decent fun/short course to a long course, when it also interrupts the flow.

Example - Anson Nixon in Kennett, PA. Was a short-medium length fun course through woods. Decent flow from hole to hole. I played it in December - all the pins were in the longs, and the tee pads were in the longs. So the transitions after each basket would take you to the regular tees, but in the longs that meant that the transitions kicked you out to the middle of the fairway. You had to walk forward to find the basket, and then backtrack to find the tee pad.

Stretched out for the sake of becoming long.

Old English, may it RIP, was the longest course I've every played. 13,920 for 18 holes from the black tees which averages 773ft per hole. It has 4 sets of tees and the shortest is 9399 which averages 522ft per hole.

Yes it was crazy long but there was also lots of elevation changes. Hole 14 was the best, imagine throwing a mid range on a 500 ft downhill hole. There's always a chance the course will be back.

Blue Valley Park in KC Mo. is the longest I've played. It ranges from 9297 ft. – 11049 ft. depending on pin position. Not only is it LONG but it is VERY hilly and the walks between pins to next tees surely adds another few thousand feet. Never been more tired after one round than I was on the "Blue Monster".

Highbridge Gold was long as well, but I was on a golf cart:)

Blue Valley is brutal. Hills, blind pins, tall grass for some rough, not a ton of trees but enough to hit them once in awhile.

Old Settlers in Round Rock is around 10,000' for 21 holes. I think it has 2 1000' holes.

A new course we're working on with have three sets of tees. The long tees will average about 600' per hole. What gets it that high is two 1,200'+ holes that when you see them, you understand why we went that way. The course will also feature several short holes that are less than 300' or are down hill deucable holes.

River Chase from the long tees is more than 13,000'.

Goat Hill in Oceanside CA. 9612' for 18 holes.

And apparently, for tournament play they can stretch it out beyond 13000' for 18 holes (from http://sandiegoaces.com/2012/03/26/goats-can-swim/) :

The twenty-one Open players played an interesting Goat Hill layout – all baskets set in their longest placements and teeing off from the blue (back) ball golf tees. This resulted in a layout well over 13,000 feet that left many long-throwing players grinning but resulted in 4-hour rounds.

David's post about the Jackson course got me to thinking about my day at Renny the other day, and which was longer between Renny and Jackson and Renny beats it by about 80 feet. I think Renny's a little tougher though. More elevation and tougher pin placements, although it may require a little less line shaping.

Trace Gold is 10,026 feet and par 69. Right in my back yard basically. For the past few years the course has been needing 9 baskets to make it playable year around, along with the short course that is there too. We are making progress and have 5 of those on the way.

On over half of the holes, a true placement shot is needed to score well. If you get off the fairway, it is very hard to score well. My favorite course.

Longest I've played:
Carousel Park DE - 9840' from longs
Hawk Hallow VA - 8089' but it seems longer with all the terrain.

Makes we wonder why the obsession with making DG courses longer and longer? Just to intimidate and drive off beginners?

Is that 8089 with our without the lettered holes? (extra 9 holes played at the VTI).

Foundation Park DG Complex in Centralia, Il. The 18 hole course in the long positions runs 13,000', I believe.

Yes to this. BV is killer long, but the hills and especially long walks between holes makes it feel even longer than the numbers suggest. Not a wooded course, per se, but trees influence shot shaping on most holes.... like the creek crossings and the entirely uphill hole #10. Not to mention another trait that KC is famous for and makes the course play longer than the numbers.... M effing WIND. A steady 25mph in your face when standing on #1 will make you rethink your lot in life, especially when you know what the next 17 are gonna do to you.

I highly dislike "long for the sake of being long" If it's long and I'm throwing a Buzzz off every tee, I'm probably thoroughly enjoying myself. If it's long and I'm throwing a Nuke off every tee, I'd rather be beating my head against the nearest tree... if only I could find a tree.

I think that a course where drivers are generally not used off the tee is missing the point! I mean long range drivers can't only be for distance competitions?! The ideal long holes make use of the longest drivers in your bag without being wide open. :)
