Am I too old to expect more?

when i stand in the reachback position i am fine, it is when I move my hips to begin rotation ,,,,,(correct me if I'm wrong) this is when my arm naturally moves toward my pec then I pull it on through to pec then elbow-chop/snap as my shoulders follow my hips onto follow through.
It is the hip rotation that is getting my lower back and this is in my living room slooowww. could just be old, worn out hard working back trouble, or just need to do more core exersizes
The main Q is am i right about rotation and arm movement.

and is does the hip rotation occur at the same time I am transferring weight to my forward foot and it all becomes a fluid motion......plant foot 50%, begin hip rotation/weight tranfer80% to end of hips increasing to shoulder rotation to elbowchop/snap to follow through

Sounds about right, but it really shouldn't be hurting your back. It could be you leading too much the hips, or are leaning back, or trying to lunge off the rear leg.

think i am trying to lunge off the leg and forcing the hips,,,, after doin' it for another #%*!*#$ hour.,,,, hey i did take some time away puttin' practice in the rain.. 8 freakin'up with this:doh:

After watcing video after video I think maybe I am trying to create toooo much hip rotation. Could that be possible, it seems that most vids I watch there is not the same rotation that Colin is performing in his instructional, I understand the concept, just not able to apply. just not gettin' it done , stuck at 300'. The harder I try the more erratic my flight gets!!

Thats what I'm saying leading too much with the hips....too much hip rotation or too early hip rotation. Keep in mind the hip drills are just that, drills that exaggerate something to help incorporate into your technique. It will take practice and trials and errors.

No advice from me, just encouragement. I'm 45, and no where in as good a shape as you. I have a blown knee and a shoulder that I beat the crap out of pitching in college. I've been playing for 2 years and I'm getting well out past the 400' mark and I'm not throwing Blizzards to do it. You can do it brother, when the form is clean you are gonna make it look effortless.

You young guys be nice to us old farts.;)

I myself am 49 years old and chose to change some things in my drive this year. My throw has always been upper body rotation with more of a walk throw X Step. I have now separated the throwing part from the rotation and added some more distance. Now I can throw more than 300ft.

I find myself (47) to be able to compete w/ guys much younger. It's not ALL @ distance for me, it's accuracy.
However, my putting has taken a drastic downturn recently. :|

I don't play age protected divisions yet, I like frustrating the young guys. Actually heard a guy say, "Whats with the f@#kin old guy"? I beat the group by 5 strokes and made the first card. Team Old Fart!

Thanks guys, still have not figured it out. Stuck at 300' but of course will keep trying to get the hip rotation right. will post a new video soon. Thanks again!!

Try leaning forward slightly at the waist during your runup. You should be able to look down(Not that you will or should) at your feet at anytime during the throwing process. Once you plant your front foot you are locking out your hips by rotating high and right with your front shoulder. You are leveraging the disc and pulling yourself off line to the right of the target.

By staying loose and getting your upper body out over your feet, you are going keep your hips free to get the rotation everyone is talking about and have a nice clean finish in behind the disc.

This is easier said than done, I know, I had the same problem. I am old and stiff, but what you are doing now is going to make you older and stiffer. You are going to hurt you lower back and your right knee. Rotating high and right like that locks your hips from rotating and pins that front foot in place. You are are in good shape, and if it weren't for that you wouldn't be getting as much rotation as you are.

I still have to remind myself as I runup and start to pull through that I lead with my forward elbow and get it down the throwing line as far as I can before my arm releases and I throw. My body has no choice but to follow in behind the disc, weight tranfersfering, hips catching up and rotating faster than my upper body and explodes, pulling the whole mess through to a clean finish.

I'm 48, I took ten years off and started back up in 2010. It took me a few months to get a long throw working but I can hit 400-425 with cheater discs. Lots of old farts can throw 350, just don't strain your shoulder with too many practice throws. I don't do a run up, just a side step while I reach back.

Think I will abandon the run up and x step for now. Seems that trying to incorporate all the motions at once is confusing something in my release and control has went crazy. Standing still with a little side step yesterday parked hole 10 at 319' and parked hole 13 at 324'. I seem to get better body rotation and snap from a standstill. Definatly more accurate throws. Have been trying to throw lefty also at around 200-225 easier than I thought.
I believe the 80% ulna nerve damage (happened mid 20's) in my right hand is hindering my throws, the brain can't get the message to the lower part of my hand and wrist, correct me if I'm wrong. Lower part of arm is numb and tingly from mid-forearm to pinky and ring finger and no control of those two fingers.:\
Thanks for all the help guys!!!!!

What you do in that video is you come up very much during the throw. You are almost jumping on your right leg at the point where you should be rotating on your right heel with 80% of your weight on your front foot.

Work on staying low and shifting your weight forward, not upwards. Lean into the throw more. Your back is straigth upwards at the point of release, you should be bent forwards.

The runup looks fine actualy, I would try and work with it. Being able to throw from a standstil is benefitial in some situations, but so it being able to throw with a runup.

Hi I'm 51 I have same type of nerve damage in my arm to, plus I've had 3 neck surgery my nerve damage goes from neck down to my hand nice burning -tingly feeling there are days I have a hard time feeling the disc --- so I know what you are talking about not a fun feeling

Must say I admire your dedication to improving your throw. Im much younger (37) , dont get to say that often these days :) . I havent been as dedicated to my DG as I should be in the past 6 months, but ironically I have gained distance. Think I dont worry about technique too much, more relaxed. My scores havent improved as my accuracy isnt as good as 6 months ago. But interesting that distance was gained by being more relaxed.

48 here and I think I may have a solution to the back issue. I used to get very a very sore back after 18 holes. It was bad enough that I actually had a pro friend of mine who was 23 at the time help me. His suggestion was to watch out for reaching back too far around my body, creating an arc rather than a straight line. Make sure you are drawing a straight line to the aim point. Changing that one thing made the pain go away for me. It also made me more accurate.
