Why do people NOT know the rules?

Seriously I'm so tired of all the phantom rules our sport has and people who think they know the rules that don't. Read a rule book. It takes like 20 min.

Phantom rules are amazing. Amazingly frustrating. :)

Some of the latest ones around these parts:
"If you play from the disc as it lies, you have chosen it as a marker and cannot use it again."
"If you play from the disc as it lies, you have 30 cm from the _front_ of the disc for you stance."

Thing is that most people do not start out playing in an organized setting. So they pick up the rules from people that didn't either. We end up with players whose understanding of the rules are 10th generational hear-say.

And then they complain about rule nazis when called on it.

I'm faaaaaar from a rule nazi.

That wasn't what I was saying in this thread. What I hate are people who think they know the rules and clearly do not.

I will admit I hate both. :)

Ok, hate is a little too strong a word. But it is annoying as hell to have to be the guy that calls even the most basic stuff. Don't need the distraction.

At least the people coming up with "interesting" rules are providing some entertainment. :) But it does not help in regards to the other group.

There was a situation at an event this weekend where a player crossed an OB path into another area of grass running behing the hole. Now, there is absolutely no reason that it should be IB, but it was just the walking path listed as OB.

The player gets ready to throw his shot and the group says "hey you are OB." the player then says "no, its just the path." The group says "no, its path and beyond."

The player knew he was IB so said "I'll just play a provisional."

Here is where it get's good.

"You can't play a provisional"

Um.....

And almost every rules problem I see during rounds has one thing in common, no one has a rule book on them. Someone called a bogus rule on me a few months ago so I whipped my rule book out and asked them to show me the rule they were claiming I broke. If you don't read the rule book, at least have one with you!

You should have that person blacklisted from disc golf. I mean after all, you told me all the hundreds of things you do for the sport on a yearly basis. Also, how important of a person you are too. Dont they know who they are messing with? I would make that phone call you threatened me with on those evil rule breakers and have them blacklisted from the sport!!

For those of you that dont know exactly what I am talking about....just PM me and I will fill you in.

We would hate to distract you from your cheating

I wonder if the people complaining about the rules are the same people who complain about the lack of growth for disc golf.

WhoTF would want to sponsor any sport where most, or half, of the players spend more energy looking for ways to get around the rules over just following them?

Oh, I'm sorry. On that site it clearly states that Frolf is a different game entirely.

I don't care what rules people play by during their casual rounds, none of my business. Tournament play is all I mean when complaining about people not playing by the rules.

But, if you plan on playing tournaments it would help you to play by the rules during casual rounds. They become second nature that way and you don't have to worry about it while in a tournament. Just play the way you always do.

I got "attacked" by a couple of rules nazis one evening at the so called friendly beer league mixed doubles. I laughed and called them such. They were of course, unfortunately, probably correct in this case. In any case I reminded them they were rule nazis tongue in cheek of course. Point is I didn't let them spoil my good time. The next week I gave them some ribbing again, good natured and they took it as such. Right or wrong, they're out there.

I think that if you are nice as possible when explaining the rules you may be labeled as "helpful" as opposed to "rule nazi".

Example. The first tourney I ever played I threw a disc OB into the road. I did know that you threw from the point that the disc went OB, but I did not know that you were supposed to go IB a meter first. I threw from the road, a guy in my group walked up and said, "its not a big deal but you cant throw from OB like that" I said I was sorry and did not know. He explained to me what I should have done and was a nice guy about it.

oh no, not the MTL blacklist. How could I ever face my family again! The shame of it all, the shame...

I carry the rules book in my bag, in a zipper-lock to keep dry, and I pencil in my own rules, then highlight them. Talk about making tournament's fun because no one else has a rule book. :D

That is not good enough for his highness, MTL....you should have the rulebook commited to memory!!

Wow, people are taking something that should be pretty much unanimously hated and turning it into an argument. Do people really enjoy playing with other people that spend the entire round calling fake rules on them?

I think the problem is that so much information in disc golf is passed on verbally and casually that things that are clear and set get all muddied up. Most of what many people know about how to throw, strategies, how discs fly, how discs are molded and even what the rules are were told to them by some dude they met on the course. For some of that it's understandable if you don't spend time researching it elsewhere, but for the rules there's a super simple solution of just buying or printing a rule book. I think that's what makes it so annoying in this case.
