Will acetone hurt a disc?

The title says it all.

A friend of mine says this will take the stamp off the disc for me, but was wondering if there are any negative side effects to the disc.

I have noticed a slightly different texture to the plastic after using it on innova dx and Star plastic but I would say do it. Some Discraft ESP discs have gotten very discolored after using it on them, as if the acetone causes dirt to soak into the plastic or something. This was after taking a paper towel soaked in acetone and sitting it on top of the stamp or stain for a few seconds, then wiping it down afterward. It has never caused a permanent problem with any of my discs though.

Just moisten a cotton ball or an old cut up rag/shirt don't soak it, also dont press down just lightly wipe. Because the excess acetone and the pressure from pushing down will start to dissolve the plastic and dull it. You can also use Goo Gone but it takes a little elbow grease just make sure you wash the disc with warm soapy water dry well before dying.

I'll add that after wiping w/ acetone, it's a good idea to wash and dry the disc afterwards as well.

Just to reinforce the point that you shouldn't press down too hard or use excess Acetone.
If you're careful, it should be fine.
Also heard of people successfully using a MrClean Magic Eraser to remove stamps, if you are hesitant to use Acetone. Just takes a little more work.

Would it not scratch or dull the surface?
Never heard of using a magic eraser...

lol you are kidding right? im pretty sure that's in the commercial.

edit:some stamps easier than others too

Mr Clean Magic Eraser is like a very very very fine sand paper, and will give the disc a different texture, I use it to get ink off of KC andDX and it works nicely.

With acetone, as stated earlier, dont press down too hard because you can leave swirls in the plastic.

Nail polish remover has acetone in it. Just not straight acetone usually. Acetone is what almost all disc dyers use to remove the stamps from discs. It works well, but can dull the plastic or eat the plastec if left on too long. Many dyers mix acetone with their dye to speed the dye process with no ill effects. You should be just fine using it to remove the stamp

I use rubbing alcohol first, it takes more time but is milder, let the rubbing alcohol sit on the disc for a couple minutes, then rub and rinse.

I only move on to acetone if rubbing alcohol does not work. I once used acetone on a an older Discraft Z disc and it clearly melted a small layer of the plastic and left a little wave in the plastic.

In my experiences with using acetone to wipe stamps the discs were super grippy afterwards. I just use a little at a time and rinse with cold water afterwards. I kinda scrub the underside flight plate though when trying to remove sharpie. Doesn't always take it off but super grippy for a few throws after. Might not be legal for tourney play but can be an advantage I suppose.

FWIW, I've seen the DEET wipes eat through plastic though. My little bro left one accidently on top of his disc overnight and it basically ate a chunk outta his lat 64 disc.

Slightly off-topic, but please note that, while acetone (when used sparingly) may not hurt a disc, it can certainly harm you. Breathing in acetone (and it evaporates very quickly) can cause serious liver damage. If you are going to use it, make sure you do it in a very-well-ventilated area!

Dont use acetone with paper towels, it will leave the gritty feeling on the disc. use a cloth towel and use plenty of acetone and use it quickly, especially with lightly colored discs. Read through the disc dying threads for help on removing stamps and ink.

I use finger nail polish with acetone. Safe for your hands and wipes stamps easily without damaging the disc. I do always wash off with soap and water afterwards.

Acetone can eat away at the smooth external finish on any disc. Particularly susceptible however are Pro blends. Do not leave strong Acetone on plastic for an excessive duration (roughly a minute or more) or you will notice some attack. Also be wary when pressing into the plastic during wiping as you may scuff, imprint, or even create a dip or bulge in the area you're pressing. Acetone really softens the plastic up and makes it quite impressionable. I recommend a cotton ball to wipe with, saturated with acetone.

Final thought, when you're removing colored stamps with acetone be cautious about the color streaking because it can impregnate the plastic in streaks that you then can't remove.
