Disc Golf in the News

Cliff Drive is legit the scariest place I've played disc golf at. It's super sketchy there. I've always chalked that up to me being a rural guy and just not getting the urban landscape. I tried to act like I wasn't scared there, but I was scared there.

I'm directing at Water Works for this tourney instead of playing because I refuse to play Cliff Drive. It's not safe.

Looks like I'll have to skip Cliff Drive when I'm down there in September. I've been planning a trip that way for the last week, anything else I should avoid?

Crazy. You think—middle of the day. Group of people. Park full of DGers. Got to be reasonably safe.

We were accosted by a dude at ZBo in Ft Worth about a month ago. We are on hole 15 which is wooded along a creek. He comes up through the woods and starts asking guys in our group if they were talking **** about him.

He said he was sleeping in his car in another part of the park and heard people talking about him. Fortunately he moved on.

If you go to Blue Valley, go there with someone who's been there before, since it's a little sketchy and navigation is terrible. Other than that, everywhere is safe.

Hope the player who was shot does OK.

Been a few years, but maybe I should be glad I didn't have time to hit Blue Valley or Cliff Drive when my son and I visited KC. :\

Jake Riley was shot in the back. Bullet fragments perforated his stomach and bowels. They removed part of his bowels and opened his stomach which was to be closed in a second operation this morning. The bullet chipped off part of his pelvic bone. His girlfriend Cozzete(sp)has set up a gofundme over on Facebook.
He has a lot of rehab ahead of him but is expected to make a full recovery.
Is this the first ever attempted murder with use of a firearm of a player while in a disc golf tournament or for that matter any golf tournament?
Are we now going to see personal protection
hardware for sale in "other gear" here on DGCR?
(Best small carry weapon for backpack style bag. Suggestions welcome.)

Just random. Why is he trying to downplay this?
Random is no excuse.
"We are not closing the beach today because of the one "random" attack by these sharks so go ahead and hit the water!"

In the absence of specific knowledge of an existing state of antagonism between the shooter and the victim or that the shooter intentionally and specifically targeted the victim, i.e., the shooter staked out the park, stalked and ambushed the victim, how is it downplaying describing a shooting for which there is no known or clear cause as "random"? What adjective would you use to describe it?

Attempted murder.
If he was just shooting into a crowd then you are correct. He aimed at a fleeing human and struck him. Intent was not random in this scenario.

While the shooter's intention may well have been to shoot SOMEONE, the question is not the NATURE of his crime; the question is how to describe his MOTIVE FOR SHOOTING THE SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL HE SHOT, i.e., of all the people in the park at the time that he could have shot, in the absence of a known motive for targeting the specific individual he shot, what is the appropriate adjective to describe what is currently know of his motive for shooting that individual? Put another way, if you were the TD or even just a competitor or volunteer, and a news reporter asked you, "Any idea why he [the suspect] shot him [the victim]?" how would you answer the reporter's question?

"This idiot was out to kill someone and Jake was in the wrong place at a bad time."

Picking a guy at random then shooting him is attempted murder.

Has the story of exactly what happened actually been told?

Personally I like to wait until all the details/stories are out before formulating an opinion. I'm not saying it wasn't a terrible undeserved thing that happened. I guess I just wonder what the world would be like without social media speculation and opinion…..

Sigh…..

getting shot does a lot of damage to a body.
Thank goodness he was near excellent hospitals.
Those poor parents in Uvalde having to bury their kids closed coffin and knowing DNA testing was crucial in identifying them.

The fact that the shooter and victim did not know each other, and had no interaction prior to the shooting, is what makes it random.

If you're claiming it stopped being "random" the minute the shooter took aim at aspecific victim, does it really matter?

Just because the victim was chosen at random doesn't mean it wasn't attempted murder. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Probably don't matter but I still say if I pick you out of a crowd and shoot you it isn't attempted murder?
