[Discmania] Discmania FD3

I'm not obsessed with the numbers at all but come on. One, if it truly is a 10 speed disc it's not a fairway driver, period. If it is a fairway driver and not really 10 speed, then that's poor information and representation of the disc and many people will have an expectation and will buy it simply based on the numbers.

I agree we need accurate numbers, and we should have every expectation of a disc generally conforming to the advertised numbers. What I think is not set in stone is the definition of what makes a "fairway driver" and what makes a "distance driver".

I'm told my Valkyrie is a "distance driver", as it is a speed 9 disc. Funny, I use it almost exclusively in situations corresponding to what most people would consider to be a "fairway driver" or "control driver" situation. COULD I throw it for maximum distance? Sure.

Point is that for me, Speed 9 is the transitional stage for my use of a control driver vs. a distance driver. For some, that transition might be at Speed 10, for some at Speed 7.

And I do agree with you that the advertising and marketing of things is such that one should develop a healthy skepticism of what one is reading. Hence, the necessity of boards like these...

^lol im the opposite valks are for max distance but my PD's are mostly fairway duties.

Flight #'s just like par is just a number. Paul Mcbeth in the bag he classifies the thunderbird, PD, and Firechicken as fairway drivers... Fairway drivers for him mean 400ft of distance though...lol

I'm excited for the new FD3 then again... You're not really going to out Firechicken a Firechicken

Is it closer to a Predator?

It has a more forward-penetrating finish than the predators I've thrown (Elite Z)

sounds like a starfire

It does have a starfire component. The tester is marked "SF" for "Starfire Firebird". I don't actually know the combo but it's some kind of hybrid of those two.

Here ya go, sorry for cell phone quality pics...and for some reason no matter what I do the pics keep coming in upside down. It must be in the upload, I've tried multiple things from my end...sorry. :\

I'm going to give that one away btw...haven't figured out how I'm going to do it yet though :)

(if the threads merge, please delete this post) From the other thread with the side by side pics, it looks like a Firebird bottom wing with a Starfire top.

Sound like a lot of saturation around that speed/stability slot.

Now we have:
1) PD
2) Starfire
3) Thunderbird
4) Firebird
5) OLF*
6) FD3

I was under the impression all of these "molds" use the common Firebird wing/bottom mold.

The beauty of the PD has always been that it can cover all of those slots as it seasons.
The FD3 sounds like a slightly slower 1st run C-PD.

I don't think the thunderbird really belongs in that list. It's got too much turn and glide to be in the same discussion, and I don't THINK it has firebird mold pieces (tho I could be wrong).

I agree on the flight of the Thunderbird.
I was dissapointed in its lack of overstability. I had hoped for a much beefier disc.
To me its not a longer Teebird, but more of a longer TL. That's why I didnt make the switch, I love my PD cycle.

But I'm 95% sure the Thunderbird has the FB bottom.

The FD3 is more OS. Like I said, if you don't have 350'+ off the tee you won't notice a whole lot of difference, but in the wind and at that power level on up you'll notice.

Also, remember molding discs isn't just "X top and Y bottom" we talk casually about it that way because it's easy to remember and we use it as a guideline, but there's more fine tuning that goes into it that makes a difference as well.

^Such as? Just curious.

There was an AWESOME thread in here a while back (no idea where tho) where someone who does injection molding (not discs) explained a lot of the process. For one, there are a minimum of three mold pieces to a disc: the top, core, and lower wing. And it's not as simple as X top on Y wing for one because the top mold piece also makes a large portion of the wing

Understood on all accounts. I fall in the 350+ crowd and am a manufacturing engineer.

None of the discs in my list above fly exactly the same, so I'm not saying there isnt room for diversity. It's a popular slot to fill in most folks bag so finding that slight variation that works for each person is fine.

I'm looking forward to trying the Discmania "FL" ( I mean FD3 :))

I really like Discmania stuff! I tried to bond with the FD but just didnt like the hand-feel. I'm too rooted in my Teebirds to kick them out. I would entertain a nice FB replacment. I dont have a 350+ FH so I can deal with a little less stability.

Keep up the good work fellas

Nice, I'll have to dig for that. I knew there were actually 3 mold pieces but never really knew more than that.

If PD's and OLF's are on that list, then the Thunderbird fits right in. The Champs have been flying like an SPD for me - plenty of HSS and into a headwind laser straight. Definitely a beefcake compared to a 1.1 SOLF, PPD, MOLF, uh.. seasoned 150g DX Firebird?

I'm curious about the FD3, but I have some less stable gummy 12x Firebirds as well as C-PD's and not much of a gap betwixt the two. For my arm speed, it might be nice to have a Firebird option that is guaranteed -not- to be a FAF fade monster.

yeah dude, who are they kidding. 10 speed FD?!?! i totally got my hopes up for this click bait.... I wish for like and FD+
