Funniest/weirdest thing you've seen on the course

Naw, I had fun writing it the way it was.

Third sentence, let me see:
I'm a fisherman, I love fly fishing the estuaries in the Sea of Cortez, I love watching pelicans surf un-broken waves as I cast my flys to seatrout.

Well my wife does not fish either so I can understand where you are coming from.

Yeah, I was expecting you to say something like "The fish is my friend, but I must kill the fish" and I didn't want to get too deep into a Hemmingwayesque post.

I'm was born in Arizona, lived here my whole life except three seasons on the N-Shore of Oah'u. I'm 50, been skateboarding since I was 5, at one time a quite serious board surfer, started hang gliding in the islands, snow surfing the mountains of the Southwest USA. I'm a fisherman, I love fly fishing the estuaries in the Sea of Cortez, I love watching pelicans surf un-broken waves as I cast my flys to seatrout. I enjoy watching fish bust up a ball of bait and then catching them with a mimic. I love flying, catching thermals, riding them up with birds, birds, speaking of birds and fish, I saw something pretty cool the other day on the course at Fountain Hills...

It sounds like one of those things you hear about when people go and scoop up fish on the shore at certain times of year. They're probably breeding or something, but I ain't no fish expert, lol. I'm with ya on the birds though! I've been a birdwatcher for years. I just get depressed when I hear or read something about how certain bird species are on the decline and have been and will continue to be so. And then u factor in the Gulf spill and that's REALLY depressing! You can't help but think the birds and fishes would be A LOT better off without us!

Killing friends and eating them is not on my diet.

I kill fish for food, sometimes. It's the cleanest kill for food that I can handle. Deer, pig or bird hunting, not my gig.

Could you point me to your story?

I would like to read it.

Dodgeball, I have stories of flying with swifts at 15,000' with them flying through my wires of my glider, rocket birds we call them.

Turning circles with a hawk, so close, you can watch them turn their head to look at you, not amazed, mostly pissed off, sometimes they will try to straffe you. Plenty of hawk stories too.

Water stories? Phosphoresence, the green flash, surfing at full moon at night in surf that could hurt you.

This is about disc golf and after only a year at it with regularity, I'm still new, way new. I'm down in the low 60's though, getting better. I'm about to buy a basket, a big heavy one and place it at home to practice.

I'm into it.

I'm hoping the people here don't drive me away, I sort of like the place.

Probably my favorite birds are purple martins and that's probably because they were my Dad's favorite. When they come back each year, they remind me of him. That's the best bird story I can think of right now!

I posted a story on this thread a few days ago. It's about how I almost got clobbered by a barage of baseballs while disc golfing, lol. It's a few pages back if u want to read it...

Plenty of things would be better off without us, thanks to us there are so many places suffering from things like invasive species.

^ without us and without the throngs of crazy outdoor cats that have played no small role in decimating the songbird population. i love pussy, but keep them in the house!!!

Speaking of birds, I remember seeing a show about a bird that made a chirp when dive-bombing, I believe as a way to impress the females. I want to say it was a type of humming bird, but I'm not sure...anyone know the bird I'm speaking of?

You guys ever seen the Lyre Bird? This will blow you away, and this is real. I saw a couple of shows about this damn bird, and what it can do is just amazeing:

I have found the birds in my area to be very non-PC with their whistles...

We have the "Jewy jewy jew" bird
and the other day at the course one kept repeating "spread your legs, spread your legs"

Maybe I have a dirty mind....

The Old Man and the Sea
by Ernest Hemmingway

It's a really quick read and quite sad, really. You should be able to buy it pretty cheaply (most libraries would probably have it too):

Amazon.com
Half.com

E. Hemminway is on the bucket list of books along with many other classics when I retire. Fore now, pulling strings (paragliding), sending discs, throwing feathers at dawn's crack (fly fishing) and growing up boys consumes me, then there is SWMBO...

Probably a mockingbird, they'll divebomb yer azz in a heartbeart!

I can't say I ever remember a birdcall that sounded like 'spread your legs, spread your legs' lol. I guess it could've been a parakeet sent over to mess with ya!

Hemmingway's overrated but at the same time he's a pretty easy read. In a couple of his books he spends half the time talking about what he's drinking. I like a good drink too, but it doesn't make for very compelling reading..
