returning marked discs

I've heard that Echostar beats in a little faster than Star. Not as fast as DX or Pro, but a little faster than regular Star. Would this be your experience as well? My plan is to beat the Echostar into a turnover disc and use the regular Star (4X PM version Star, if that makes a difference) for hyzer/OS shots only.

Yes. For some reason the order of each disc to beat in for me is (longest to shortest):

1) Star (For me, really long time to beat in)
2) Champion
3) G Star
4) Echo Star
5) Pro
6) Blizzard
7) DX

I haven't had a Starlite/G Starlite disc or XT. And for some reason, Blizzard tends to beat in really fast and get flippy, rollers for me.

After years of frustration attempting to return discs to numbers no longer in service or golfers who can't seem to figure out the "I'm putting it under this trash can, you can get it if you want it" kind of arrangements I got tired of failing to return discs.

Now, when I find a lost disc (which happens a lot) I check for a name -- If there's a name and if I know the person (which happens a lot) I give it back to them. If there's no name or I don't know the person (which happens a lot), I just put it right back where it was as if I never saw it.

Word.

After a couple seasons of raking, and meeting people on their terms, I got more hard lined.

I'll be here at this time, can't make a special trip to you.
Sure I'll ship, pay my gas, time, and postage costs.
Here a list of dozens of discs, tagging names on several groups on Facebook. Please donate if you see your disc, I spent hours retrieving these for you.
If you don't have some extra bucks, why are you playing in the tournament?

Which finally led to....

Screw it, I'll text you if I see your disc, and move it somewhere not obvious on the course.

Now, since I'm not pressured to meet 40 different people on their own terms, on different days, disc golf is less stressful.

I know a guy that literally throws them back into the water, doesn't have time for your nonsense. Just trying to get his disc back and go home.

There have been a few folks now in this thread who have stated they do not mark their discs at all. Asking those folks, do you you not play in sanctioned tournaments?

Actually, 802.01.F states that "All discs used in play, except mini marker discs, must be uniquely marked in ink or pigment-based marking which has no detectable thickness." Doesn't say anything about requiring name & contact info. A player could uniquely mark their disc by writing "I love myself" under the plate and they would be playing with legal equipment. But of course this makes me want to meet the sociopath who would gladly mark their disc uniquely but also refuse to do include their name and contact info.

I'm only pointing this out because I had the same reaction you did, so I checked the regs. But I agree with your general point. Refusing to spend the 13 seconds to write your name and contact info on your discs is stupid. Where are the disc golfers who are so rich that they can afford to just whimsically throw away plastic, without a care in the world? Dummies.

I had a discing friend who only marked his discs with a single sharpie dot.

Didn't like a lot of ink on there.

It was totally legit for tournaments.

Basically he knew that if he lost a disc, chances are he would probably never see it again anyway.

Actually I'm so ritch, in discs, that the total value of my collection would be reduced more by inking those I sometimes throw than risking a lessened likelyhood on the return of those I do lose.

When I buy a new disc, I don't mark it right away. After I get a feel for a disc, I decide whether it is worthy to keep in the bag or for other stuff. If not, I have a non inked disc to sell, this increasing value. I have only ever lost one disc that had my name and number and I never got a call back...

Stupid and dummies? Now that's a bit severe, isn't it? How about personal preference? If I lose a disc, how is that a problem for you? The only disc I own that I have inked is a mini, that was only because of a charity tournament where they picked doubles partners out of a bin.

Inked discs are worth less when trying to trade. If I throw a disc in some jail and quit looking for it, I have given it up. I don't throw my bread and butter discs on risky holes, I have a stash of discs I don't care if I lose for that. And last of all, I don't want to deal with the hassle of trying to get it back.

So rich? Really? I've lost 3 discs in the last 3 years and none was so important to my game that I ever even replaced them.

I recently inked all of mine but I had been playing them uninked for months. Not because I'm rich because I'm aware that inking them was giving me about a 4-5% return rate on lost discs and I didn't go out of my way to find a sharpie.

There have been a few folks now in this thread who have stated they do not mark their discs at all. Asking those folks, do you you not play in sanctioned tournaments?

Plenty of people don't.

I am far from rich, but I DO NOT put my name and number in any of my discs. If I lose one, and I GIVE UP the search, I have relinquished ownership of said disc and whoever happens to stumble upon it can keep it, I WANT them to keep it, and hope they can throw it better than I was able to.

I have returned some that I have found, generally, that is a big hassle.

I have found many discs with multiple names and numbers in them, many with names that have been marked out or covered up. and new names written in. The variables are endless. These discs (especially DX plastic) I usually give away to obvious noobs on the course.

On a side note, most of the discs I have lost, have not been lost in the "woods or weeds or water", but rather because I threw a second disc, forgot about it, and walked off and left it. When I realize I left one, I go back and ask around if anyone found it, sometimes I get it back sometimes I don't. No big deal, the most expensive disc I have ever owned is only $25, that isn't gonna break the bank.

So I now follow my own rule of "Never throw two".

If you find a disc and call the number when you get done and the phone is disconnected or out of service, what do you do?
I have a disc sitting on my shelf at home, I called the owner 3 times and the number is "no longer in service". What would you do?

What I normally do is if that don't work I type the phone number into Google and see if any name comes up or you can put the phone number in the Facebook search tool and if that phone number attached to any profile it will come up and you can try and contact them that way.

I don't play tourneys but I am not not going to ink my name on any of my discs, whether I like to throw them or not. Although my bag is set with my discs for each year/season, I do like to experiment (ADD/ADHD maybe?) with new molds and new plastics of the discs that I do currently carry. And if I'm buying a used disc, I could give 2 rat's butts about ink. I'm more concerned with how broken in the disc is because it's going to be a thrower. With a little acetone and some playing time, the ink on the disc fades away, so my main reason for no concern on ink. The only time that I don't ink a new disc is if it is going straight on my wall/collection.

When playing sanctioned, you would be required to ink your discs; which is the reason I put forth the question. As a rules nazi, I would call someone out on not having a disc (uniquely) marked. Just sayin'.

A friend of mine will uniquely mark his discs with "ME." When viewed upside down & backwards it reads, "WE." So I guess it belongs to all of us. ;)

Here's my first experience of calling the number and returning a disc. The person lived like 2 hours away. They come back a couple weeks later to play. So I go over to the course on my own time and return disc. Am I suppose to get a tip? I didn't get nothing. I look them up and they have decent winnings in tournaments and spending plenty of money on more tournaments. So why would they want their disc back if they get plenty of money and free discs and I don't even get a cent. I'll get my alcohol out next time.

If someone was choking and you saved their life by giving them the Heimlich, would you expect them to pay you?

Do you keep one dollar bills in your pocket to hand to anyone who holds a door for you or waves for you to go first at a stop sign?

Do you think people should only do the right thing when incentivized?
