[Innova] Val Jenkins 4x signature Starfire

I've never thrown an SL. I think I'll pick up one of these, though, just to try.

I could've swore I remember years ago something about the SL mold being broke and it didn't sell well enough to warrant getting it fixed. This was a while ago, back in the old ask Dave D days of the pdga forum.

You are correct. But there was a limited re-run of the Star SL a few years ago and it sold out like hotcakes. This mold is Innova's direct competition for the Saint/Escape slot. It's hard to imagine that this will not sell but then again, what do I know?

I haven't understood taking the Star SL out of production, except that they seem to be taking all L-molds out of production. IMHO, production runs of the Star SL would sell very well, but we'll see what their strategy is...

I am glad they are giving Val a disc, much deserved.
On another note I have always hated the "L" thing I think it have limited the sale of the discs by not giving them their own name.

So we still don't know if she is getting a production run though?

Really hope she does, it's deserved.

I sure hope so. She deserves it (Seriously, 4x World Champ and no sig disc?!) and I would love it if SLs were back in production other than just Pro Starfires.

I hope (and believe) Val should have a production sig disc. Unfortunately, I think Innova is cheapskating us (and her) with this "commemorative" run, and won't give her the production run she deserves.

And the reason I asked if these discs are truly SL discs... if they are, that means they ae an SL mold, and COULD put out production Star SLs again if they wanted to. I really have to wonder why Innova won't put the Star SL back into production; it's not like they didn't and won't sell.

Two very bad decisions by Innova, so far.

Edited to add: Oops, forgot: JMHO, YMMV

If they sold well wouldn't we still be seeing them?

On the one hand, we DO still see them in the form of Pro Starfires. But they've dodged with excuses on why no more Star SLs, and IIRC they even said they broke the mold (literally).

On the other hand, I've said before, and others have said, that they're taking the "-L" discs out of production, even the good-selling TL is about to be 'Proshop only'.

Innova has taken a number of good-selling discs out of production in the past, so killing off the Star SL is not like it's the first time they've done something like that.

And Val still deserves a production sig disc...

Disclaimer: JMHO, YMMV.

What is your criteria for selling well, and do you have access to their sales figures?

I'm not saying these molds do or don't sell well, I really have no idea, but I see you mention it often about particular molds and I'm curious how you arrive at your conclusions.

Maybe the mold was broken. I wouldn't know. But I would think if that were true, and it was a noticeable impact to their bottom line, then they would repair or replace it. My guess would be that it would not return enough of a profit (or any) and makes no business sense. Which is also likely true of any signature disc for Val, as sad as that may be. Deserving or not, if Innova was going to stand to profit from it, it would be a thing.

Hmmm, I don't really think the Starfire or SL are particularly necessary discs in Innova's lineup anymore honestly. I mean I used to bag both a Star Starfire and a Star SL and I liked both of them, but these days I'd use Thunderbirds for the types of shots I used the Starfire/SL for and they work those lines better for me than the Starfire/SL did. I think between a PD, Thunderbird, and/or Firebird you can get any line a Starfire or SL can do and probably do it better. I'd personally rather use a heavier DX or Star Thunderbird for Starfire type lines and a GStar Thunderbird for SL type lines. I can see someone who has been playing a long time (like Val) who knows the Starfire and SL very well and just prefers those discs because it's what they know, but I don't think it's really a particularly great mold compared to some of its competition.

Val Jenkins gets her disc!

The dealer.innovadiscs.com site just announced that Valarie Jenkins's signature disc will be the Star Starfire. This has been a disc associated with Val, so it's not shocking that the Starfire will be the one. Questions are: will the Val Starfires sell? and should they have given her a different sig disc?

My hope was a production signature Star SL, bringing that mold back as well as giving Val that disc as her sig disc. Maybe they'll slip some SLs in amongst the Starfires?!??! Time wlll tell.

Anyway, congrats to Val!

glad she got it and I will buy one or two just because her name is on it.
