ALL Mach baskets should be outlawed in pro tournaments!

Every time a discussion about baskets comes up, I see a day when the governing body of our sport (it may or may not be the PDGA at that point) decides to approve a single target as the choice for championship level play.
Problem with this would be the cost of retrofitting all the courses that regularly host sanctioned events that aren't already equipped with those baskets.

In the early days of our private course, we borrowed a basket on which someone had done this. I can't attest to the reduced spit-outs---I don't putt accurately enough to blame the baskets---but the muffled chain sound was cool.

Yes David, I forgot to mention how much quieter the chain clanging sound is -- night and day, muffled is exactly the correct description.

I don't remember where in the video I heard it, but Paul missed a putt that "looks" like a spit out, but he comments how the Mach X won't catch anything on the left side for RHBH putts. He commented on how he knew this and he missed the putt... saying he should miss right if he missed it.

i personally think the best catching baskets (for all types of putters / spin/ push/ fast /slow/ hyzer/anyhyzer/high/low/strong or weak side) are Innova Discatcher Pro baskets.....

but even those (which are the ones they use for all the DGWT events) can have HORRRIFIC SPIT OUTS.

2014 World Championships... Steve Brinster...

Compiled spit outs from Steve Brinster's 2014 worlds IN ONE ROUND!!! (man if you computed the strokes from his spit outs you realize how close he was to that top card in the end).

mach x and prodigy baskets catch pretty much all fast center putts... but have horrific push outs for soft putters. all baskets have strengths and weaknesses.

Spend enough time practicing, you can putt on anything.

Blaming the basket is the hallmark of a lousy putter. Or, someone looking for excuses instead of taking responsibility for poor putting.

True.

There's a local who is known for his putting. He won the Worlds putting contest some years ago. His putts are always hard and I have never seen one bounce out or go thru.

Maybe we just need to get the "putting is too easy"group to teach the "every shot that hits the chains should stick" group how to putt.

I agree with these posts.

And I'll add, if your putts aren't staying in on certain baskets, then you aren't throwing good putts on those baskets.

Perhaps, elite level players should be blaming themselves for poor putting.

Do PGA pros blame the hole when their putts lip out?

Ricky, probably the best putter in the world right now, had a few spit outs at the Memorial but I bet you wont hear him complaining. Same, as someone mentioned, with Paul...he knew the baskets and owned up to his mistake on putting on them.

I do like seeing various baskets for tournaments...especially yearly events like the Memorial where top pros get to know the baskets by playing there year after year. Its like a lot of other sports (baseball in particular) where each venue has their own unique flavor.

Completely utterly agree.

and those that are clamoring for "standardization" on the baskets, you do realize there is already a set of standards set by the PDGA for basket size - right?

I'd say that's about all the more detail we need for baskets. Let each manufacturer make their own unique version which fits within the specs.

Frankly, I think the best way to prevent spit-outs is to practice. Those Dynamic Discs narrow baskets (Marksman?) are awesome to that end.

If you watched/listened to final commentary, even McBeth complained about them. If the putting genius is saying something yeah we need to look into this.

Some facts, were pointed out about a disc golf target is inherently different than almost any other sporting target. That is true, but we have failed as a sport to evolve with new standards, designs and technology. You can thank both the PDGA and the lack of evolution.

So, yes we need change. And yes we were saying that 20 plus years ago when you putted on a Mach 1 basket and the disc went clear through the dam thing. You stood their in disbelief cursing the gods.

Not much has changed with disc golf my friend, the Rodney Dangerfield of sports.

Yup it's very possible, and I'd be interested in hearing what the pros who played those baskets had to say.

On a side note, my 24 chain practice basket was spitting out pole hits when I first got it. So I tried a tweak that made a huge difference. I measured the OD of the center pole and went online to find pvc with an ID very slightly larger. Home Depot had the perfect solution, gray pvc conduit. I bought a 10' piece, cut it to size, and slid it over the the center pole. The conduit absorbs the hit much better than steel, it was a remarkable difference. I think that single change could help improve even the crappiest baskets with excessive pole bounce outs.

McBeth said he would rather play on the baskets at Fiesta than the Xs. I'm sure if you asked 10 other pros, you'd get 10 other responses.

If you were starting from scratch to develop a new game you were going to call disc golf, how would you design the holing out device?

(I'm thinking chains might not be involved.)

We can all be mad at mach 5s, however, the DGPT mandated that only 4 baskets were to be used.. yet they fell on their freaking face when they allowed a non-sanctioned basket to be used at fiesta.. blame the DGPT.
