DGPT - Idlewild Open driven by Innova Discs & The Nati

btw...why did so many pros skip this event? And what needs to be done to bring them back next year?

I think it's mostly because a lot of them were in Europe the prior week for an event. Other than changing the schedule up a bit I'm not sure what else can be done.

I really think he has potential but would need to be the color guy alongside a solid standard announcer that keeps things on track. He's obviously very bright and has some potential to be humorous and entertaining, but he has just been overdoing it a bit (or a lot). I'm curious how the Sexton-Risley combo would work. The problem is disc golf still doesn't quite have the real announcer to make things work with the disc golf community's abundant supply of goofy, fun, color guys. Sexton's ability to bring some maturity and commentary navigation to his entertaining and fun side is, I believe, why he is simply DG's best at present.

I guess I'm not a real announcer lol, but check out the Wintertime Open vids where I had AJ join me. I thought he was great in the more traditional color guy role, while I did the play by play (although not well enough to be real :D ).

Speaking of vids, Chase card vids will be out today sometime. Cory and I did commentary this morning.

I'm guessing not having it scheduled the week after a European major and the weekend before Am Worlds might be helpful. A bunch of guys stayed in Europe (Ricky, Simon, Eagle, Jerm, etc) and a few went to Charlotte to hang out and promote (Schusterick for sure, maybe others).

I think some players are scared of Idlewild, to be honest. That they could stay overseas an extra week or duck down to Am Worlds was convenient more than anything. It's been a long standing question why Idlewild hasn't been a popular tour stop for years. They've run plenty of A-tiers but never really snagged the top level talent to play there. I think some players don't want to have their ass kicked by a course like that. They look at what happened to Kevin Jones and want no part of it. I've heard it right from players' mouths regarding courses like that. They're "unfair" or "stupid" because being a hair off-line can be punished or because they can't default to a hyzer crush (backhand or forehand) on most of the holes.

I expect similar things in September at the Delaware NT. That course (Iron Hill) is a lot like Idlewild in that it will challenge the best players to throw a variety of shots accurately through the woods and can be punishing if you're not totally on your game. And *conveniently* there's an A-tier in Canada that will split the field that weekend too (not to take anything away from the Canadian folks...I know a few of them and they're good people that will surely put on a top notch tournament).

If you notice at the bottom of the screen, we almost always show the card scores when the players finish a hole. I really like that Gary O (the graphics guy) does that as much as he does. But, I don't think I can get behind showing the full scoreboard before every hole. We tend to use that as "filler" when the action slows down. But we try to make sure it is shown at least once every 3 holes or so.

I do agree, that our coverage can be much more compelling if we could add a 3rd camera for the 2nd card. Have 2 on the first card and 1 on the second card (like GBO did). The problem that we run into is that we DO actually need time for commercials. I know some people hate that we show them, but they are a necessity to afford to pay for the live coverage.

Currently the format is: Hole Preview with Dixon - Tee shots - 1 min of commercials - Approach/Putts - repeat.

What is the standing of the ads right now in terms of are the advertisers coming to "you" or are they having to be sought? Just curious, but either way, maybe for the non cgi commercials, there could be a stipulation that they create at least 2-3 variations of the commercial. Im sure it would be more effective, minimally more cost and much better to watch. For example, the blackinkdiscs commercial could have 2 or 3 other variations with different players, idk just something which shifts it up at least a little.

I think we are getting closer to finding the "voices of disc golf" and people we can build the sport on for a few years. I like Nate, but he's much too good a current player to encourage him to focus on commentating. Big Jerm, meh.....even though his over seas commentary was shockingly very good recently. I still think Terry & Dixon are coming very close to what the sport needs imop. Terry seems to be dialing in his inner Jim Nantz and that pairs well with someone like Dixon who can provide the tech/stats side of commentating. Dixon is relatively new to commentating, and I think if he continues to be given a chance to commentate he will improve dramatically. Fwiw..they both have good clear speaking voices and that imop is the main thing to build on when it comes to commentating.

One thing that bothers me is when a commentator repeatably talks about their round, disc selection, and personal challenges without linking it to players and action being filmed. The experience of playing the course is valuable, but please focus on augmenting the action being shown.

Went and helped tear down some of the festival stuff. How he stuffs all that crap into that trailer, I have no idea, lol. Probably going back out in the morning to help him finish. If any of you have a DGPT event in your area, don't forget they need help after the event is over, also.

As usual I am bad with names but the DGPT "Festival Coordinator" is a cool dude and does a ton of work to make these events happen. So if you happen to attend an event, give that guy a big thank you... and maybe a few hours of your time to help him out...;)

Yes! Insights on a hole, strategy, disc selection are excellent. More than one "I did xyz" per 9 holes is too much.

We encourage manufacturers to give us as many commercials as possible. DD & NextGen are really good at this, I seem to get a new commercial every month or so from them. Other companies have a commercial and stick with it for the season (or a few seasons). I have tried to mix up manufacturer's commercials, but some of them just want their newest commercial and that is it. Everyone is different.

For the DGPT Steve Dodge handles all of the commercial deals. So I honestly have no clue as to who is approaching whom. But, for Worlds this year, we will get to approach manufacturers, clubs, & individuals at some point soon to support the broadcast. Just waiting on some final stuff from the PDGA and Smuggs.

For sure, but I'm sure looking at other players playing better or worse, on the same course as they just played has to mess with ego at some point. But for sure focus on the action played out on screen, not what played out earlier.

hmmm....interesting comment. What drives you in today's disc golf media world? To be the best videographer (improving camera work / editing / post production skills, etc) or would you rather stay in front of the camera and do commentary?

imop?

Was just looking at the course page...

...moderately wooded??? I realize that several of the holes(mostly the new 6 holes) aren't exactly the most wooded holes on earth but I think the ones that are more than make up the difference to be heavily, right?

The original 18 would be called heavily wooded, but all 24 moderately wooded is about right

Idle has even been seriously thinned over the years. As many rounds as I have there (third course I ever played), it feels like a walk in the park comparatively.

Didn't however look overly fpo or am friendly.

Looks very fair to me.
