Simon's Vlog

he will have a million subs I predict in a few years or less, these things tend to grow exponentially.

I'll take that bet. $100.00 says he won't even be at 500k subs in 2 years from now. I admit he'll get closer if he puts up more general content (trick shots, etc) but I think his recent subs activity is directly related to a disc golf market hungry for content due to covid.

Putting his content behind a paywall would be a very quick way to kill his following. I'm lightly entertained by his content but if it were behind a paywall I wouldn't make that transition.

I agree, my understanding was he wasn't talking about a paywall, just revenue from views, paid ads, merch, etc, etc.

"all" he needs to get to that next level is that a video goes really viral, kind of like that "catch a disc from a boat" video that Brodie did...that video have over 6mn views.

I think Simons "dubble ace" or "throw in a basket on top of a moving Van on a bridge" is harder to do than the boat one. . .. but the boat one looks cool and don´t have any baskets in it.....the basket makes it a "discgolf video" . . .. Brodies is more for everyone that´s ever thrown a disc.

You disc golfers sure do love to gamble, don't you :D 1 million is a bit of s stretch in 2 years......sort of. But 500K? He's already past 100k, I give him a pretty good shot at hitting 500K.

Youtube is going to be huge. It will be on everyone's smart TVs in their house and you just can't beat free. There are a lot of youtubers who have 1+ million views for pretty unimpressive, innocuous things. I've been on Youtube myself since the beginning so I am keeping my ear to the ground with it.

Looking at Simon's channel, the video quality already in a very short time, the content, his enthusiasm for it and future plans (he said he is going all in on Youtube when Covid is over, big time travel/collaboration blog plans) I see it as a surefire winner. He's going to be a real deal million plus subs Youtube star, with the platform of disc golf exploding in popularity that is only going to add opportunities.

I don't even know if I'm a subscriber. His new content is always recommended, but I get all the recommendations for other pages that I absolutely have not subscribed, so there isn't necessarily a huge incentive to subscribe.

What is interesting to me would be the average watch time for his videos. I put up in car for my motorsports as a training tool, so I have like 2 subscribers and may get 20-50 views per vid. Which is fine because I don't promote it and I do it for my personal use. For one video, the nomenclature of my title matched a band name (that I hadn't heard of) and concert location and I got thousands of views, but my average view time is like 3 seconds.

I would need two throws to even get on the list...

The top 4 are who I would have predicted. Interesting though--of the top 4, how many DGPT wins are there besides Eagle in the last few years? Even for top bombers, there just are not many holes on tour that provide a clear stroke advantage. Even Fox Run hole 7 has O/B to deal with...

Couldn't believe Eagle got one 60' PAST the basket on Maple Hill 10?! Even Simon doesn't consistently get up there.

GG got it up to the castle...going past says a lot.

simon had to pull out of the DGPT championship due to his injured elbow. at the end of the message, he vows to "use this season as motivation for the next 4-5 months to get into the best shape of my life and come back stronger."

I have mixed emotions about this. On one hand...good...take time off and let the arm heal. The other....if he starts busting out a ton of disc golf videos with him throwing......hmm...

The whole post strikes me as human, honest, disappointed and full of good intentions.
The first test will be if he gets that elbow some professional medical attention.
The second test will be if he allows it to heal, which he did not do this past "off-season".
The third test will be if he can find a way to generate content while not throwing.
The fourth test will be if he spends some time in the field with the camera off, so he can concentrate on his game/form/lines,etc.
Just sayin'

Simon has lots of friends that he can do videos of (Casey, Eagle, and others) so he can keep the VLOG going without doing any throwing himself. He could even do interviews.

Another thing that would be cool to see him do is learn how to throw lefty. Do a VLOG series of learning left hand backhand and forehand shots. That would be fun to watch....as long as it doesn't affect the healing of his right elbow.

I hope he does. Every time I see him playing it seems he's holding back. I'd rather see him solve his issue and play at 100%.

His content early in the pandemic was a strawberry in a worldwide field of ****. I think those videos created some overthrowing and repetitive use issues but there's no way I'm going to say a single sideways word about the man who made it his mission to provide me stellar content as I stayed home, for months. Dude deserves a Congressional Gold Medal, a Nobel Peace Prize, and knighthood, at the very minimum.

Agreed, I just hope the dude comes back healthy and shows us what he can really do.

He said the double ace throw in video that took him 2 days and hours of throwing ultimately was the one that injured his arm, and he's had issues with it since. Either way I'm sure there is a happy medium in there in which he can still do trick shot vids and content just dial back the amount of throws, perhaps feature Casey and other players more.

I think my primary thought on it is that the content rolled out the way it did because the season had been suspended. He would probably make different decisions knowing how his arm feels now, but it was also a totally unprecedented and unexpected situation.

didn't he have an injury in the past that resulted from a 360 drive? it seems like if any player SHOULD be aware of the potential for injury from unnecessary activities it'd be Simon

Yeah he blew his ACL out years ago and got it replaced. Looks like he recovered 100% from that one.

Nowadays they give you a new acl, a cadaver one, and they're pretty good at doing them, especially if you've got all those youthful hormones helping the healing process along. I'd imagine he's probably got connections to get top notch surgical access too.

The elbow thing is likely similar to tennis elbow. Tiny microscopic tears in the ligaments and tendons that connect bone, muscle and tissue together. Since he hasn't really rested much, the body cannot keep up with the repairs and the tissue keeps getting retorn instead of fully healing together.

These repetitive trauma injuries like tennis elbow are different than blowing an ACL out from doing 360 drives. They aren't single event injuries, they tend to sneak up on you like a bad habit habit that develops over time, similar to carpal tunnel. Think more like a car engine eventually wearing down, versus a car accident that smashes an engine.
